After being disowned by my dad, I left Georgia, finding my way to Pathfinders Lake, to my cousins who’d always accepted me without question. The idea of a week away with them, at a music festival and exploring mountain roads in my Trueno ‘86, sounded like the perfect escape. But then there’s Cooper. My cousin, the one who helped me understand myself, the one who’s always been perfect in every way. I try to push down this old crush that flares up again, but I can’t. He’s gay. Could he ever be interested in a pint-sized enby firecracker with more crop tops than one human should reasonably own? But when we reconnect over the week, I can’t help but wonder if maybe, just maybe, the road ahead could be more than I ever imagined.
Cooper
Rio’s finally here, and I’m excited—more than I probably should be. They’ve always been the most badass person I know, and now, watching them embrace their truth, I’m proud of everything they’ve become. We’re spending a week at the cabin, and every minute feels like we’re picking up right where we left off. But as we spend more time together, I start to realize something—something I’ve been trying to ignore. The connection we share is more than just family. I never expected to feel this way about Rio, but when I see them, I can’t deny the pull. The road I thought I’d be walking is shifting, and the only one I want beside me is Rio.
The Road Ahead is a low angst, only-one-bed, pan-awakening M/X romance. It is part of the Pathfinders Lake multi-author series that features forbidden romance. Each book can be read as a standalone but is better enjoyed as a series.
Addison Acres has a big smile and a gentle temperament which leads many to believe that she is sweet and innocent. Given that she loves to write raunchy taboo stories with a hefty dash of kink, this is patently untrue.
Addision lives in Australia, swears like a pirate, and is a profound supporter of the Oxford comma.
This was my first story from this author and I really enjoyed reading it. Rio and Cooper were so good together. I loved reading about them along with Teresa and Brad. Such a good story.
I absolutely loved this sweet, angst-free novella by local WA author Addison Acres, and I think that Rio and Cooper are my new favourite book couple.
I haven't read many enby stories; possibly there aren't many out there, but I really liked the way the author handled all aspects surrounding Rio and their gender and sexuality, including the thoughtful communication between Cooper and Rio. Cooper was so respectful of Rio and their needs, and I really liked that they communicated like adults, allowing for no second-guessing once they had both admitted to being into each other.
Cooper and Rio bonded over anime and cars when they were younger, and Rio's most prized possession is their Japanese-imported Trueno AE86 (which I had to Google and was stunned at the prices they sell for here in Australia). I felt the thrill of the ride when Rio shows Cooper just what the car can do, and I can imagine the adrenaline it would cause to be in that car as they took the turns. (There's a short piece available after you read the book where Rio lets Cooper drive their car. I was highly entertained by Rio's reticence at letting Cooper handle their baby).
Cooper's sister Teresa was the best kind of sister and cousin anyone could hope for, while her boyfriend Brad took a while to show he wasn't the arse he was behaving like. I didn't rate him at all for most of the book and was still wary at the end, though he does redeem himself.
While the majority of the book is angst-free, there is an event that happens near the end that had me unable to breathe for a while (not relationship-related); the outcome could have been way worse than it was.
This was a wonderful read, and I am looking forward to whatever Addison Acres publishes next.
Rio is looking for a new life. They have been disowned by their father and are running towards the only family they have left.
The Road Ahead is an M/X forbidden romance. It is about two cousins, Rio and Cooper and the choices that bring them together. I found their story to be pretty low angst. While they both had fears and concerns, they were willing to be together regardless. I think that was the best part of this book, they knew the other was their person.
I think the author Addison Acres did a good job keeping the story moving along with every detaIl having its place at just the right time. She also made the each character stand out. Rio is a self defense teacher who loves cars. Cooper is a paramedic who volunteers at the hospital with kids making balloon animals. Penguins! I love the addition of the penguins and how they show their love. I even really started to like Brad towards the end of the story. He totally took responsibility for his words and actions that were hurtful and you can tell he cares for Teresa. I loved how the family came together and Rio felt their love and also their jokes. Lol. I would love a short novella/epilogue about Teresa and Brad as well. They were a good foil to Rio and Cooper. I really liked this book and the series overall.
The Road Ahead is part of the multi author A Pathfinders Lake Romance series. Each book can be read as a standalone but why not enjoy the whole series. This is the story of Rio and Cooper who are cousins. Rio who is enby is disowned by their father goes to spend time with their cousins and go to a music festival. I loved the way the characters communicated with each other. This is a low angst story with great characters, not just the main characters. It was a great ending to a wonderful series. I would definitely recommend this book and series. received a free review copy
Rio & Cooper The relationship between the pair was incredibly sweet, even before they began exploring their physical attraction to one another. Both had plenty of silly, awkward moments, and both shared their love and happiness freely. I was glad they were able to spend time with one another, even with Teresa & Brad in the same cabin. It was definitely a different challenge than other forbidden relationships have coming at them.
I really appreciated the care and detail Addison gave to the portions of the story surrounding their sexual safety. It's touched upon in other books, but this was listed out with purpose, and it was very helpful to me as a less-informed reader. It was also quite nice to see the redemption arc of a side character. It took a lot of different circumstances to get them there, but it turned out well.
The Road Ahead was a sweet and wonderful romance between the two cousins, who had palpable chemistry that leapt off the page. While it may not be everyone's cup of tea, I found the story fun and geekily entertaining.
I received an authorized copy of this book and am volunteering my honest review.
I love it! I love the low relationship angst! I love the driving and car details, I love the emotional intelligence and bits of humor. This might be tied for my favorite book by Addison Acres! I did receive an ARC for free in exchange for my honest review.
'The Road Ahead: An M/X Forbidden Romance' written by Addison Acres
Welp, not sure who the target audience is supposed to be because the main characters are clearly out of school and have jobs. Rio teaches martial arts and dance, and Cooper works as an EMT, and both of those careers require specific training that is not just a "weekend warrior" superficial training, as they both take several years to learn and gain experience, and both of them have been supposedly working for a few years.
Oddly, the storyline appeared to be aimed at teens/young adults because of the manner it was written in and the dialogues seem kind of juvenile.
(or maybe I'm just a bit too old for this, lol; I can't recall if their ages were mentioned ? The storyline was confusing at times since one minute it felt like the author was coming from a Y/A angle, then later on they acted more mature)
The author did a lot of info-dumping about gender, sexuality, consent, etc, like they were lecturing to high school kids. Oh, don't get me wrong, it was all good and necessary information, it's just the way it was presented it came across as lectures to teens and young adults, and was repeated a lot.
Ok, now that I'm done being crabby about some of this book, I really liked the boys, especially Rio (the cute twinkie guy on the cover) who's an artfully disguised 5'3" bad-ass and who will stand up and fight for friends and family; he's cool (oops! I mean THEY are cool, since they are are non-binary, aka: X).
Cooper is gay (6'3"), and built like a muscled tank. He has had a bit of a crush on his cousin Rio for several years now, ditto for Rio, but they have never admitted their feelings TO each other... yet.
Ok, so far this is all a familiar trope, BUT, here's where it gets interesting...Rio is a drift-car racer! And even though it's his hobby and not his profession, he's a very skillful driver!
I LOVE drift-racing! I'm not skilled in it, but I used to know a racer and it was exciting either being in the car with him during practice runs, or watching the races!
There's a great part in the story where Rio is participating in a night race in the mountains with a new racing club he just joined in Minnesota, and Cooper is riding shotgun with him. Rio is driving an older model, a 1985 Toyota AE86 Trueno that he imported from Japan, so the driving set-up is like the British Isles, Hong Kong, etc, in that the driver's seat is on the right-hand side of the car, so the gear-shifters have to be done left-handed (the opposite from in the USA). So as they're starting out Cooper asks if Rio minds if he puts on some music. When Rio tells him to go ahead, Cooper hooks up the Bluetooth from his phone to the car's sound system and blasts out the theme song 'No One Sleep in Tokyo' (by the Edo Boys) from the manga-turned-film, 'Initial D', a fun to watch Japanese drift-racing film. What a rush! I can almost feel myself in that book, participating in the races! They both start laughing, giddy with the excitement of the impending mountain race!
I really got into all the drift-racing in the storyline, and the author did a great job on her research or else she's a driver!
~~~~~~~~~~《FYI》~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Drift-racing (in case you don't know): Drifting is an auto sport that focuses on a particular driving technique of the same name, which has been used in other well-known motorsports, such as rally and speedway racing, for numerous years. Car drifting is all about using oversteer to get the vehicle to drive sideways through corners. This has to happen at a high speed and while the driver remains in full control of the car. It's breath-taking and nail-biting to watch and adrenaline pumping, while remaining super focused, to participate in! Those were my fave parts of this storyline! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~♡♥︎♡♥︎♡~~~~~~~~~~~~
Of course there is a lot more going on, the "forbidden love" aspect is because they are first cousins, which in the USA, and depending on which state you happen to be in, is illegal to be in a relationship with and/or have sex with your cousins (but laws are changing a lot, so at the moment, idk?). They're in Minnesota, so it's not illegal there anymore. But, in other countries, in other cultures, marrying your cousin is not only allowed, it's desired, in order to keep family alliances, wealth, bloodlines of succession intact, etc. (I know this from personal college friends I had who came to USA from within several of those cultures)
Anyway, back to the plot: of course there's a big trauma-drama, an in addition there's a "coming out" to family about their relationship, and "where do we go from here?" on-going queries and conversations for our lovers.
All-in-all, this was a pretty decent storyline, even though a bit juvvie for me (except the drift-racing, lol).
Oh. Em. Geee!!! How adorable was this book?! This was a great ending to this series. I'm sad to be at the end, but I'm glad I get to share it with the world (or at least my followers). While not all of the books were for me, this one definitely was.
I loved that the author took so many non stereotypical themes and tropes and rolled them all into one book. I honestly have only read 2 or 3 books with non-bianary characters. It's not that I choose not to read them. It's just they aren't written very much. At least not that I've found. Add that with the top/bottom sterotype that the author flipped plus the added taboo trope. Also, while Cooper has his preferences, he also has a way he needs to open himself up for spicy time. I really like that the author added that and didn't just go the normal opening route. While it may seem insignificant, I think it gives an extra layer to Rio and Cooper's understanding of one another. If that makes sense. This was everything I could have hoped for.
Penguins. I'm never going to be able to see a penguin and not think of this book. That whole thing with the penguins and the rock and the balloons and the shirt. It was so adorable and cute and even I think I blushed when Rio realized the significance of the penguin reference.
If you're looking for something with cute, gorgeous people with a thing for penguins and classic cars, I highly recommend you read this. However, it is first cousins, so if that is an ick for you, maybe this isn't the book for you.
This is my first book from Addison Acres but it absolutely won't be my last. The Road Ahead is tender and sweet and - for me - impossible to put down. I lost sleep because I needed to keep reading Rio and Cooper's story. (My fault for starting the book at 9pm.) The author gives us a perfect picture of what forbidden longing looks like, and does so with genuine care. This is more than just a love story. It's about acceptance and understanding and choosing each other over and over again.
Rio and Cooper have such a genuine connection that it just radiates through the story, but it's balanced by their humor and chemistry and their moments of intimacy. The subject matter could have been heavy and angsty, but what we're gifted with instead is a story that is warm, romantic and affirming. It is real and hopeful and beautiful.
If you love chosen family vibes and romances that explore identity with heart and respect, this is a must read.
[I received an advanced copy of this book. All reviews and ratings are my own.]
Rio's mother died and his father disowned them for being non-binary, so they travel to visit their cousin, Cooper, at a cabin on Pathfinders Lake. Rio is small and slender, but they are badass. They have a car they can drift in, plus they teach self defense course. Cooper is a big, giant of a man. He works for the local fire department as an EMT. Both Rio and Cooper have a secret: they each secretly crush on the other. Oh, and they're cousins.
This was a great story about how they give in to their desires. It also includes some serious action where Cooper has to put his skills to use to save his sister. There is so much going on in this book. I thoroughly enjoyed it and confessed to staying up way too late, reading.
Rio and Cooper fall naturally into each other's orbit during their reunion at their Cabin on Pathfinders Lake. It’s a sweet and playful relationship. And while there is drama that surrounds them, their relationship is pretty smooth and sweet.
Overall, it’s a nice story with non-gender affirmation, chosen family, and a bit of a car obsession.
Rio & Cooper are dynamic characters that left me wanting to know more from page one. Both were unique and layered- being brought to vivid life in this sweet, yet emotional summer romance.
Cousins who haven’t seen each other in 6 years, but who both have had feelings growing for one another since they became adults, explore a mutual attraction and a building love. Though the bulk of this story is a soft feel good romance, it contains heavy topics and some traumatic moments.
What you’ll get: •Forbidden (Cousins) •Paramedic/Self Defense Instructor •Enby MC •Size Difference •Mutual Pining •Drifting (cars) •Smaller Top •Hurt/Comfort
Now, that is how you close a combined series. Rio & Cooper are cousins who have always been extremely close, and when Rio returns to Minnesota to live with Cooper, time hasn't taken away their bond. Together, with Coopers sister, Teresa and her boyfriend, Brad, spend the week at Pathfinders Lake for a music festival and to give the cousins time to learn what the adult version of each other is like and let the bond deepen. Brad shows his ignorance here and there, and it was nice to see that when he apologized, it was sincere and does make the effort to show he is not as he first came off to be. Absolutely adore how fiercely Cooper and Teresa stand up for Rio, even though they can protect themselves no question. The bond of this family is so deep, its a beautiful sight to see, their is no judgment, just love and acceptance. Their bond is something that I wish all people could experience, even though Rios' dad is a jerk, that doesn't stop the rest of the family from accepting and supporting Rio. This was my first book from this author, and if they continue to write like this, it will not be my last.
I’m voluntarily reviewing from an advanced copy that I received. My review is solely based on my thoughts and opinions.
Rio is a fem enby and Cooper is his gay cousin. Always accepted by his cousin and family, Rio moves up to Minnesota and stays with Cooper and his sister at Pathfinder Lake. Both know they are crushing on their cousin but cannot stop their taboo feelings. I enjoyed their " options" discussion. It's got gasping moments, angsty moments and steamy ones. With a loving family and great friends, these two can find happiness. I received a copy of this and this is my voluntary opinion.
The sixth book of the Pathfinders Lake series marks the end of it. The Road Ahead is a very exciting finale. Rio and Cooper are a wonderful couple. The story is very captivating with an unexpectedly realistic twist that kept me on the edge of my seat.
I wish I could see Rio's father's face when he finds out about their happy relationship with Cooper!
Rio has been disowned by their father so they head off to be with their cousins. They may be small but that doesn't equate to weak because they're definitely fierce. Cooper is a sweet teddy bear of a man and the closest cousin to Rio. Both have harbored feelings for each other but have been afraid to act on it. I really enjoyed how well these two communicated. There's plenty of love, laughter and some tears as well.
A very enjoyable addition to this multi-author series of standalones (only the location is shared). Excellent non-binary representation and wonderful that Rio could count on the support from their cousins that they couldn't get from their own father. While the cars weren't really my thing, the author has clearly done a lot of research. Great ending.
I loved this book so much! Cooper and Rio were both such amazing characters, and I loved Teresa too! There was so much to enjoy, from personal interactions at the cabin, to adventures at the festival, to car rides and more. Lots of excitement, but also plenty of growth in the relationship. Low angst, medium heat, HEA.
This is my honest review of an advanced reader copy.
The Road Ahead is part of the multi-author Pathfinders Lake series, each can be read as a standalone. This is an only one bed, low angst, forbidden read about Rio and Cooper. I really enjoyed this story and all the wonderful characters.
This is part of the multiauthor Pathfinders Lake series and this book features Rio and Cooper. Rio relocates back to Pathfinders Lake to start anew and reconnects with his favorite cousin Cooper who is also back in town. Cute and sweet read!
I am really enjoying this series! The legend is beautiful and the couples find each other even against all odds. This book was really sweet - Rio was so compelling and confident in themself. He and Cooper are really meant to be - sweet, sexy and a fun story!
Rio and Cooper were cousins and whilst they spent many a happy childhood together as they grew older, their time was spent more virtually, but when Rio's father disowned them, Cooper and his family stepped in and gave them a place to call home. I loved loved this story watching Rio and Cooper rekindle their friendship and realising that their feelings were not one sided. Whilst I did not know much about anime and cars I was drawn into Rio and Cooper's enthusiasm and I could feel the excitement when Rio was driving the tight bends. Whilst it was a slow burn, it didn't feel like it as I was loving seeing Rio have a smile on their face when they were with Cooper and Cooper's younger sister Teresa who I loved the moment she was introduced. One reason I love reading multi-author series is it introduces me to new authors and I am going to check out more by Addison Acres
The Road Ahead is part of the multi-author series A Pathfinders Lake Romance. It is a slow burn , low angst romance. This is my first book by this author, and I liked the writing, the character development, and how breaks with stereotypes.
Rio has lived in Georgia, but has been disowned by their father, so they go to a cabin on a lake in Minnesota to spend a few days with their cousins and attend a music festival. There they meet Cooper, their cousin and an emotional support in difficult times. Rio has always had a crush on him, which is mutual.
During the festival, we see how their relationship develops. The main couple from the first book is mentioned . I really like it when a series references other books that belong to it.
I don't know anything about cars, but I didn't get lost in the descriptions of Rio's car.
I am sooo in love with Rio and Cooper!!! This was the sweetest read. I'm not a car person but that didn't matter at all, as everything made sense and I didn't feel lost (so don't let that put you off!).
I loved the chemistry between these two and the fact that the non binary character was the top was such a lovely change. I don't think I've read that before and it was really refreshing.
I've read a few titles by this author now and they're quickly becoming my go to for low angst, healthy relationships. I love that the characters communicate and it's not a huge long drawn out breakup because of miscommunication (my pet peeve).
This was really sweet and funny and going to the top of my re read pile.
Absolutely Fantastic! It is a sweet forbidden MX love story and I couldn’t get enough! Cooper and Rio were easy to fall in love with. Without giving any spoilers I absolutely loved the reference to the penguins and the balloon animals had me smiling ear to ear.
This is a great addition to the Pathfinders Lake Romance world. I have thoroughly enjoyed this series and recommend adding it to your TBR list :)
*I received a free Advanced Reader Copy directly from the author! Thank You Addison Acres for your stories :)
This is the last book in the multi author series A Pathfinder’s Lake and my first book by this author but I really enjoyed it. Rio and Cooper’s story is a low angst, only one bed, taboo romance between cousins but you can’t help wanting things to work out for them and the author gives us a great read that kept my attention from the start to the finish. Great read.
A really sweet love story between 2 cousins - very little drama. Wasn't super spicy, but was a fabulous story with great characters! Huge size difference - the larger more masculine of the two is the bottom. There is quite a bit of "car talk" in this book which I basically just skimmed over. Overall a nice, enjoyable read. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
