Harry Cozen is in command and this is his greatest gambit, but alien propaganda threatens to reveal the war's most damaging secret on the day the bloodiest battle of the conflict unfolds.
The War of Alien Aggression is one massive book and features 5 stories that are centered around the theme of human resolve and resiliency, whenever faced with the brutal nature of war. A.D. Bloom depicts his settings with exceptional detail, and if the story was ever made into a motion picture, it would require one very high budget in order to match the art direction of the book alone. The carriers and ships are beautifully envisioned, and from the very first pages, I felt transported into the fray immediately. The story begins in high octane fashion and never lets up, which really kept me turning the pages, curious to know just how humanity could stand up to such a formidable, alien threat.
Now at first, I thought the characters could've used a bit more fleshing out, but by the time I was introduced to the alien aggressors, it didn't matter anymore. Like most sci-fi, The War of Alien Aggression features characters that serve the plot, rather than vice versa. Great sci-fi isn't about characterizations, but the messages, the social commentary, the bigger than life adventure and of course, the ideals and morals of the story.
I look forward to more of A.D. Bloom's work. The War of Alien Aggression is sure to please the hard sci-fi fans and action-adventurers as well!
Four and a half stars! What a fun amazing read! This is a collection of five novellas; some are better than others, but they all are good. Each novella tells its own story but they tie together to complete a larger tale. I give extra points for no "shock-waves" in space...
There is non-stop page turning action, deceit and subterfuge abound in each story. The battle scenes leave you cringing and up on the edge of your seat. All this is good, but what really makes these stories are the characters; you love them, you hate them, but most of all you can believe in them. My favorite novella was "Lancers" it really reminded me of Goshawk Squadron and other tales I have read of WWI aviators where their planes were at least as deadly as the enemy. What nail-biting drama!
If this is so good, I am sure you are wondering why not five stars? It really needs an edit, it wasn't terrible but there were duplicate words and incomplete sentences in each story. I also wonder if 'Shafter' was a Lt. Commander or a Major (both ranks wear gold oak leafs).
This book was well constructed and even though it had its parts with bad spelling and double word usage, I myself thought it was a great book and like I said before , that is my one major gripe, is when people not pick a book apart about spelling and word usage. There I put it out there so everyone else can let it go. People, they don't make a lot of money writing these books to begin with. Back to the book it was great in my list ,it was full of action and explained things that were going on at just the right time. The characters all play important parts. This was a real page turner for me. Thank you Mr Bloom. PS Read the first book first, Duh, yes I know, some people do use their brains but it will help with this book on some things I'm not going to be a spoiler on, but I kept wondering where is it? Read the books and you will see what I'm talking about.
An enjoyable and entertaining space opera that kept me turning the pages. The "spare" style and "bare-boned" characterisation may not be to everyones liking but I think it works well and certainly helps to keep the action flowing. There are a few formatting problems and typos but I barely noticed them. I was too busy enjoying the fast-moving story. You will be too.
What a cracking good space opera. Brilliant first five books of the series. A great mix of military action, suspense and intrigue. The characters were solid and very likeable, except perhaps the reprehensible Aussie villain and his cohorts. A great way to while away some hours. I'm off to read the next couple in the series now. Highly recommended.
I enjoyed the premise of the book. Excellent character development. Look forward to more from this author. Thanks to the author for several hours of good fiction.
You hate to call a thing "dull" when it features entire species and civilizations duking it out with giant ships in space, but, well, it's, uh, dull. At least the first quarter or so, which is all I could plow through. I have no idea why these people were doing what they were doing. Maybe they have riveting back stories that unfold later in the work, but there's no sense of that. The one interesting point, **spoiler**, the use of a sneaky pseudo-false-flag operation to trigger a war, it was kind of used and left behind.
Not really a bad book or anything technically wrong with it, but it seems more like a well designed background. Now it there were a real story to move in and take place against that background, that'd be great.
But, "Boooo!" Why let politics and prejudice ruin an otherwise good, long tale? The author could have done without the back-story, and this set of books would have been just as good.
The title gives you all the basics about the book’s topic. I found the book very enjoyable, it was fast paced, packed with action and there was never a dull moment. Many authors would have spent thousands of pages to tell this story, but that was not the case here. The book focuses on action first and gives little background for most characters. Some may not like that, but it actually works perfectly for this book. While I did find that the story itself left some open question and there were some things about the Alien’s actions that did not make sense it did not diminish the entertainment value of the story. And the story’s take on the alien invasion topic is quite different from everything I’ve read before. The book is a complete story that ties up all the loose ends but the end of it, but it still manages to leave room for a sequel and I will be keeping an eye out for one.
I stumbled across this on Prime Kindle Unlimited and downloaded on a whim. I though I was reading only one book as I didn't read the description more than A second before just DL the book. It was a four volume quasi-epic space battle with space marines and squidy lovers!
I thought it was fantastic , good characterization believable and likable. No gratuitous profanity of any direct sex scenes made this a fun read I finished in two sick days
I love the level of detail and intricacies in this book. If you love action and futuristic science fiction then this is definitely a book for you! I can't say enough about the description and characters, I really felt for them and felt as if I was there.
The book started out with so much promise. You have military science fiction, action, a little romance, and political diversions on the side. It is still a good book/series to read, but I got bogged down in it because of the "flow" or the way it was written.
