This was a sweet, chatty novel that I fell into immediately. Having read a couple of books by Hobman, I knew I was in for a good romance!

Unlike the other books I have read, Hobman spends the first few chapters going into a lot of detail about Star and Fin. I was surprised by this technique but it did get all the background ‘out of the way’ from the beginning. I thought I would find this a bit tedious but it actually made me feel closer to the characters as a result. I appreciated the open, honest nature of their narrative voice and made Fin and Star rather realistic.

Quickly establishing an attraction between Fin and Star, their backgrounds becomes an issue for Star, who believes she is not good enough for rich, successful lawyer, Fin. On the other hand, Fin regards Star as his saviour who made him realise he shouldn’t have to be unhappy if it means making others satisfied. As their relationship grows, so does their self-esteem and I liked seeing the positive impact each had on the other. For Star, it is a realisation about her photography, gradually increasing in confidence to appreciate that her work is worthy of being displayed.

However, it was Fin that was the most surprising of all. Lawyer by day… hunky rock god by night! I loved Hobman’s descriptions of Fin’s transformation when he takes to the stage and could vividly imagine his captivating stage presence. I could understand why Star swoons over Fin’s performances and I enjoyed seeing Fin express himself through his music. It was an outlet for him that was definitely required.

Juxtaposing the sweet relationship between Star and Fin, aka Twinkle and Mr McYummy, is the connection that Fin has with his parents. It is made clear very early in the story that Fin’s actions have been simply to gain approval from his mother and father, even down to his fiancée choice. As Fin grows to realise that this is not a healthy way of living, he behaves more independently, acting for himself rather than others. Yet, this estranged relationship always hovers over the novel, making me desperate to see how Hobman would instigate a reconciliation between the two.

As a result, I found the closing of the story not only unforeseeable, but also a little bit saddening. It was not what I anticipated from the romance genre and I wonder if this means there is a sequel on the horizon for Fin and Star? I for one, would be really keen to see what happens to the couple next, especially as it seems there is a little bit of unfinished business at the end of the book.

A great read, I was so pleased to get my hands on this book and lift me out of a bit of a reading slump I had been experiencing! I loved the setting and it has definitely added Edinburgh to my ‘bucket list’ of destinations I would like to visit. This is a sweet love story with musical undertones and surprising character developments along the way. Highly recommended.

With thanks to Boldwood books and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is a sweet and fun opposites-attract romance, and I loved the messages about believing in yourself and following your dreams.

Star and Fin are both well-developed, believable characters, and I enjoyed their opposites-attract romance. Star is a free spirit who works in a coffee shop that Fin, a lawyer working at his father’s company, frequents. Star often daydreams about Fin but feels he is out of her league. I love her independent spirit and her gregarious and positive personality. Fin is not as independent and free spirited as Star and is very much defined by family expectations. With relentlessly demanding parents, Fin has trouble standing up for himself, and he never feels like he is good enough.

Though they are quite different, Star and Fin complement each other well, and I love how they encourage each other to follow their passions and secret hobbies. They also help each other work through their fears and insecurities and gain self-confidence, especially when it comes to their hobbies. Star and Fin have great chemistry, and though his parents (they’re the worst!!), fears and misgivings, and a bit of miscommunication and misunderstandings prove difficult obstacles for them, I so rooted for them to find happiness together.

In addition to the well-rounded protagonists, I also really enjoyed the descriptive writing, especially when it came to the setting. Scotland sounds so lush and beautiful, and the author’s writing creates such wonderful and vivid images of the country. It pulls you right into the story, and it makes me want to visit Scotland even more!

I enjoyed this heartwarming and charming contemporary romance. It has great characters and messages, and the love story is so sweet. Thanks so much to NetGalley, Boldwood Books, and Rachels Random Resources for providing me with a copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.

Once I started It Started With A Kiss I just could not stop. The characters are so charming, so likable,so realistic you can't help but want the best for them!
Fin and Star don't have a lot of self-confidence but what they have when they start talking and getting to know each other can't be beat. They bring out the best and brightest in each other and their happiness will now shine.
This is my first book by this author and I really have enjoyed reading her writing style, it makes it very easy to understand the story and the pacing was perfect.
With such different personalities and backgrounds the characters have you would have thought the characters wouldn't get on but they have an understanding and compassion for each other's situations and get on fabulously.
Brilliantly written, I can't wait to see what else this author has out!

Friday Jones is stunned when her husband of twenty years announces he needs a break and moves out of the family home. Though Friday readily admits their marriage has been strained for a while, exacerbated by the recent deaths of Liam's parents and the family dog, Friday never imagined Liam would simply walk away. Heartbroken, Friday struggles through each day while caring for their teenage daughters and continuing to work part time as a naturopath. Liam has been gone for four months when Friday's boss insists she takes a week R&R at a health spa, where Friday meets a charismatic married man and falls into a wildly passionate but sort lived affair. While Liam pursues his dream to become a stand-up comedian, and tries to keep up with his brother's bachelor lifestyle, Friday's best friend, Rosie, encourages her to spread her wings, setting her up with a much younger man and signing her up to KissmeCupid.com, while persuading her to help out with Rosie's latest business venture hosting divorce parties. Friday is just beginning to pull her self together when everything starts to spiral out of control, her ex lovers won't take no for an answer, the anonymous gifts on her doorstep suggest someone is stalking her, her daughter ends up in hospital, and then Liam wants to come home...

It Started With a Kiss, Lisa Heidke's fifth novel, unfolds from the first person perspective of Friday and the third person narrative of Liam, exploring the themes of personal happiness, marriage breakdown, domestic drama and modern relationships. The story is told with plenty of humor and wit but doesn't dismiss the seriousness of heartbreak and loss. I especially liked the realistic ending, which isn't as neat as you might expect.

Heidke's characterisation is always strong, Friday is an emotional mess but that is hardly a surprise given the situation, I imagine I would be too if my husband walked out. I thought Friday was a little too self obsessed at times, even a bit flaky, as evidenced by her failure to do anything about growing her business, but I could understand that Blake's flattery would be irresistible given the recent blows to her self esteem.
Friday and Liam's daughters are well portrayed, fifteen year old Olivia is a maelstrom of teenage contempt and self absorption, thirteen year old Evie is sweet and desperate for her parents to reunite.
I wasn't really expecting to be privy to Liam's side of things and I didn't really want to sympathise with him but I did, a little, though I never really liked him much. His behaviour is pretty selfish, especially as he expects Friday to wait in limbo while he indulges in his mid life crisis.

I enjoyed It Started with a Kiss, it's a quick, engaging read about love and relationships told in a way that is both entertaining and thought provoking. I'm still a fan :)

Fin Hunter is working for his father in his law practice, exhausting himself trying to get his love and approval, but nothing seems to work. When his fiancée call of the wedding, his parents blame him. His dad eventually has a heart attack, and Fin works even harder trying to show his dad that he loves him and will work hard holding things together while his dad is recovering. American Star Mendoza is living her dream relocating to Edinburgh, to live with her grandmother. She is working at a trendy city centre coffee shop, fantasizing about the handsome businessman she serves daily. When they meet up after Fin's breakup, they begin a tentative relationship, but can two people from such different backgrounds and walks of life have a real relationship.

Star and Fin were both great characters. I love how developed they were. I felt like I really knew them, their pasts, their faults, and their personalities. Star was an independent person, with her pink hair, her photography, her quirky and honest personality, and her dreams. Fin was sacrificing everything to make his parents happy, something he will never be able to do. I loved that he put it out there doing karaoke and realized that he also loved to sing. His parents were the most selfish, narcissistic people, that my heart broke for Fin. Once Fin and Star got together, this story got so upbeat and fun. I enjoyed seeing them get to know each other and the growth they both go through. Fin realizes he deserves to be happy, and Star begins to get over her insecurities. Star's best friend, boss and roommate, is such a hoot. He is a bit like a fairy godmother and I absolutely loved him. This is a book about finding what makes you happy, standing up for yourself and what you believe in, letting go of things that are holding you back, friendship, stepping out of your comfort zone, and of course, Romance! A fun story, I very much enjoyed and recommend.

I've read and thoroughly enjoyed a lot of Lisa Hobman's previous books. In my opinion, and for my tastes, this was not her best one.

It's definitely an easy and enjoyable book, sweet and full of warmth, but something about the characters didn't work for me and spoilt the enjoyment a little bit. It might be because they were a bit too young and naive for me, but nothing that would bother a younger reader for example.

I would in any case recommend Lisa Hobman as an author, so have a look also at her other titles, they are all brilliant!

Awwwww I loved this. So much warmth and chemistry between this couple, no-one can deny that spark, although Fin's evil mum sure will try! This is such a heart warming and adorable read, I fell in love with the couple almost immediately. Plays on stereotypes a tad but does so in a way that challenges perceptions and surprises.

Love the creative elements of both characters too and the lack of confidence over their hobbies.

Passionate, lovely, perfection.

My heart was ok, then has got an heartattack and the was better then ever.

I felt in love too. With a loyer, not possible but yes. Fin was a really too traditionalist but after he was dumped on the altar and he met Star, a waitress from America he was changed. Someone thought in worse and made him his life terrible but hopefully we all survived. I can tell were ups and downs but so wonderful described I am sorry the book ended.

Both MC were so lost so shy and so not confidant in their skils. But with a little help of Strìc de dhauis - Stroke of Fate they both developed their real interrests. They had all, found a home and joy. But there was someone that did not like their happiness couse was against their will. To spoil everyrhing. And there was somone who helped to get back in track.

It was charming and passionate as I love. The transformation of Fin and Star was so perfect. I loved every sentence, every word. Their story was steamy without going into details. I like that the author left it open to your imagination. She said just enough to make feel the love and the passion between them.

An other wonderful think was that it was settled manly in Edinburgh, a city I always wanted to visit.

The refference to music was so great, I traveled back in time. So perfect. Simple but huge book.

I might really want a tatoo.

I really loved the opposite atracts romance and have to thank you Bookandtonic an Netgalley for this arc.

I loved Star our leading protagonist - I laughed and I cried beside her and I liked her more and more as I got to know her.
I loved her friend, landlord and boss, Alec; he protected, encouraged and consoled her just as a protective sibling might - Alec and Granny Aggie are all Star has to hand with her parents living far away in the US.
I enjoyed this book so much that once I finished it, I read: Dreaming under an Island Skye. I loved it! I'm really happy to have found a new (to-me) author!
First appearances can be deceiving and some of us think that we're not good enough for someone or aren't able to do something. I wanted so much for Star to shine and she did in my eyes. I love her vibrant zest for life. She's clumsy, vulnerable, kind and so different to the suited and booted Fin, aka Mr McYummy. He is a believable character, locked up inside himself, going about his day working for his Father but he is in a different class to Star (according to society).
True love will always find a way...
Star and Kit unbeknownst to each other except for his calling into Alec's Café every weekday morning for his morning Latte, each struggle with some insecurities, then a character who I didn't care for at all really grated on me and didn't help matters.
This is well written and the narrative flows at a steady pace - it is written in a way that grabs you and holds you tight right up until the last page. Emotions run high at times as they face one hurdle after another.
Human beings can couple up and become soulmates, lovers and share each others dreams if their love is pure no matter who or what stand in their way... will Star and Fin fight against their obstacles together?
This is a compelling, emotion stirring read, perfect escapism and I highly recommend it!

That's number #2 down for #AWW2015.
Review to come.

It Started With A Kiss is the fifth book by Lisa Heidke, and I must say I have been waiting for something new from her for a while. I have really enjoyed what I have read of her, which is all but her first and I would really like to chase that up at some point.

I think what I love about Lisa Heidke’s work is that her heroines are generally everyday average women, mid to late thirties and facing the same dilemmas that any one of us could face.

Friday Jones was not quite what I was expecting from a Heidke heroine. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t dislike her but she did aggravate me at times and I think she brought a lot of her troubles on herself. Friday is a wife of almost twenty years and mother to two teenage girls. Her life has settled into the monotonous routine of extra curricular activities, work and home duties – a feeling I’m sure many of us can relate to. Husband Liam is struggling with the drudgery of everyday life and declares that he’s not sure he wants to be married anymore so moves out of the family home and in with his bachelor brother.

The chemistry between the two main characters in this book is simply stunning – it was a gorgeous love story, and I thoroughly enjoyed every single moment. Star is the embodiment of a free spirit – an American who chose to live in Edinburgh after a family visit, with her pink hair and multiple tattoos, working in the coffee shop owned by her gay flatmate Alec, wandering the city with her camera bag capturing images of the city she now loves. Fin is a sharply dressed lawyer working for the family firm, about to marry the woman approved by his controlling parents who have never shown him any love or appreciation. Star looks forward to his visits to the coffee shop, but when he tells her about his impending marriage it looks as if any chance of a relationship between them is over before it starts – until she runs into him in an unlikely setting one night, discovering that he has another side to him when he gets on the stage to sing.

These were two individuals I fell for immediately – the unlikely romance between them was entirely convincing, filled with warmth but also with a satisfying sizzle, despite their very different backgrounds and lifestyles, each encouraging the other to pursue their secret passions, their support for each other increasing the confidence they both lack and building the belief that anything might be possible. And, for a while, it looks as if there’s not going to be any tension and conflict – while they both hold back from telling each other how they feel, they really hardly need to. Until one night when everything comes crashing down – Star’s worries about not being good enough are realised, Fin faces a difficult choice between love and family loyalty, and their happy ending looks increasingly impossible.

I really loved the whole story – the author builds the emotional engagement with both Star and Fin quite perfectly, telling the story through both their voices, getting inside their thoughts and feelings, helping you understand their insecurities, really making you feel the joy of their developing romance and the freedom and release afforded by her photography and his moments on the stage. The supporting cast is really excellent too – Star’s flatmate Alec is kind and caring and the man everyone needs watching their back, Fin has his brother, gallery owner friend Tom and his new lawyer boss, and they’re sharply contrasted with his horrendously cold and manipulative parents. I also so enjoyed discovering Edinburgh (the descriptions are wonderful – this is somewhere the author clearly loves) – and I really loved the music (always a feature of her books), only breaking off from reading the wonderful story to search for some the perfectly chosen tracks on Spotify.

I read this book from cover to cover in one glorious sitting – entirely caught up in the very special relationship, following every twist and turn, desperately wanting everything to work out for them both – and have to say there was absolutely nothing about it that remotely disappointed me. It’s just a perfect – and beautifully written – love story. And you can’t ask for much more than that, can you? Highly recommended by me.

I loved Star with her pink hair and quirky dress sense - she slightly reminded me of Ellie in About a Boy - and I grew to her instantly. At the start of the book she seems so full of life and such a happy upbeat person that it was quite sad to see her begin to doubt herself and her ability to fit in with a new crowd as she starts spending more time with Fin. However, the way Alec and Fin pushed her to believe in herself was really heartwarming and it shows just how important friendship really is, especially when it came to Alec as he really does look out for Star like a big brother.

We start with seeing Fin at his worst, trying to be something he really isn’t just to hear a bit of praise from his dad and feel loved. Underneath all of this you can see what a good guy he is and how he really just wants to please everyone - something that you can never do! Fin's emotional story was almost the opposite of Star's, he grew in confidence as the pages turned, let alone when he grabs the mic and stands up on stage!

This was a great book about discovering your true self and finding someone who will embrace this and love you for being who you really are, flaws included. Lisa is able to create such strong characters that bounce off the pages of her books, not only with the main characters but also those in supporting roles such as Alec. This alone draws you into the book and you soon find yourself immersed in the characters' lives, wanting to know what is going to happen next and, with Fin and Star, if this really is a case of opposites attract and they can make it through the book together...

I was pulled into this story early on and loved the characters and setting.

First of all, it's set in Edinburgh, a place I've visited a few times so I know some of the places the author talks about and with the descriptions, I was almost there again!

Fin, whats not to like, he's an all round good guy, yes he is a successful lawyer that comes from money, but he has many layers that you'll love discovering.

Star is a unique character, with pink hair, tattoos but surprisingly quite reserved.

I found the two of them together a wonderful cocktail, they really had a pull.

One to add to your TBR if you like a hot Scots Man and opposites attract.

4.5 rocking stars

They do say opposites attract and when Fin whose a shy lawyer meets Star who was born in Edinburgh but brought up in America they are instantly drawn to each other. Star is pink haired, tattooed and quirky, Fin has another side to him which we discover in the telling of their story. Beautiful love story with some drama and unexpected surprises with a happy ever after ending.

Full Review at http://www.booksandababy.com/?p=75

Australian Women’s writing is really going off at the moment. Some of the best books I read in 2014 were local publications penned by known and not-so-known female Australian writers – which is fantastic for the state of the local industry.

I have read a few of Lisa Heidke’s efforts and particularly enjoyed her earlier works, such as ‘What Kate Did Next’. This one is due for release in early 2015, and reflects her continuation of form as one of Australia’s most engaging and accessible chick-lit writers.

The subject matter, domestic and martial disputes, seems to be a hot topic in the literary world at the moment – do we fear our martial security when so much else in this world is uncertain, perhaps? Nevertheless, I enjoyed reading about this because it is so relevant to the lives of so many, myself included.

The setting of the Northern Beaches of Sydney (with brief forays into the Inner West and Kiama) is one of that is very familiar to me, and I enjoyed this aspect of the novel. Equally, Friday’s (yes, Friday!) role as a naturopath was of personal interest (although she only works two whole days!), as I love all things natural health and beauty. Having said that, I couldn’t really relate to Friday. While she probably represents a cross-section of rather privileged women from that area of Sydney, I found many of her actions rather illogical and her constant indecision about her marriage a little repetitive. More could have happened beyond the short-lived incident of obsessional attention, which appeared late in the novel and seemingly fizzled without consequence. I would have liked more about the subplot of her developing business plan, which again, never fully developed and took a narrative backseat to the overarching concept of marital unrest.

The premise of a newly separated woman attempting to navigate modern relationships was quite interesting and Heidke handles it rather deftly and humorously. The character’s realisations about the nature of love and fidelity are predictable, but worthwhile reminders. While ‘It Started With a Kiss’ isn’t going to change the face of contemporary publishing or marriage in Western society, it was the perfect Boxing Day read between snatches of the cricket; light, engaging and generally pretty enjoyable.

This is definitely one of the best romance book I have read this year! Lisa Hobman is one of my favorite author, she is always writing top books! The romance in this book is so well written, it's a step by step one where the main protagonists discover eachother and slowly build a beautiful relationship. This book is a page-turner! Once you have in your hands you can't put it back down! 5 stars out of 5 for me!!!

Well written and engaging, it was real, nothing was unbelievable. It was hard to like the main character, she was so detached from her kids throughout and acting like a teenager without children. Really felt for the teenagers.

The father was nice and I really related to him.

The only reason I couldn't award five stars is....

The book needed more heads up as to whose perspective I was reading from because it wasn't a simple his chapter her chapter and the ending I felt was cut short.

Otherwise, highly recommended for anyone in a long term relationship or married!!!

Enjoy Lisa's Sydney based fiction, but not a fan of infidelity fiction, especially when it is handled with such little comment on the massive impact this can have on many in the various relationships.
The family relationship of parents & children is handled well & the female friendships are realistic.
Naturopath so messed up & so unprofessional wasn't a great advertisement for the profession.

I have been a fan of Lisa’s books for a while now. I haven’t read everything that she has written to date but I am getting there. I read the synopsis for ‘It Started With A Kiss’ and it certainly sounded like the sort of fun and light hearted read I have come to expect from Lisa Hobman. I couldn’t wait to start reading and so without further ado, I grabbed a cup of tea, grabbed my Kindle and settled down for a fun afternoon of reading. I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘It Started With A Kiss’ but more about that in a bit.
I loved the characters of Fin and Star. I really felt for Fin. He does his best to please and impress his parents and make them proud but all they seem to do is criticise him and point out his ‘failings’. In that respect his parents certainly seem very passive aggressive in that they get their kicks from making him feel like rubbish. They also don’t show much positive emotion regarding Fin and focus on the negatives. He comes across as a nice lad with some flaws but none of us are perfect. Star is just lovely. She has dual British & American nationality and she loves all things Scottish. Star works in a coffee shop and Fin dropped in for his morning coffee on his way to work. There’s a definite spark between them and I kept everything crossed that they would get together and get the ‘happy ever after’ ending that they both so deserved. What happens? Well for the answer to that question and so much more you are just going to have to read the book for yourselves to find out as I am not going to tell you.
As soon as I started reading, I knew that I was going to become addicted to reading ‘It Started With A Kiss’ and that I wouldn’t be doing much other than reading for the rest of the day. Part of the reason why I enjoyed the story so much is to do with the fact that I took to the lead characters as well as I did. I ended up feeling as though they had become friends of mine and I felt protective of them both. I had my own theories as to what was going to happen and I had to keep reading to see if I was on the right track or if I had wandered off down the wrong path entirely. I became so wrapped up in the story that I lost all track of time and just how quickly I was getting through the story. All too quickly I reached the end of ‘It Started With A Kiss’ and I had to say goodbye to Star and Fin. I found ‘It Started With A Kiss’ to be a joy to read from start to finish.
‘It Started With A Kiss’ is superbly written but then I have come to expect nothing less from Lisa Hobman. Lisa has one of those easy going writing styles that is easy to get used to and easy to get along with. In fact reading one of her books feels more like a chat between friends rather than reading a book. I hope that makes sense. Lisa certainly knows how to grab the reader’s attention and draw them into the story. Lisa clearly cares about her characters and this shines through in the very vivid and realistic way in which she describes them. She describes her characters so well that they seem just as real as you and I. I love the way in which Lisa’s stories are full of fun, laughter and romance with the odd bit of drama in there for good measure. I love the way in which Lisa makes the reader feel as though they are part of the story and at the heart of the action. That’s how I felt at any rate.
In short, I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘It Started With A Kiss’ and I would definitely recommend this book to other readers. I will certainly be reading more of Lisa’s work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.

It Started with a Kiss de Lisa Hobman

Argumento:

Lisa Hobman’s It Started with a Kiss is a dreamy contemporary romance set in Edinburgh that is absolutely adorable.

American Star Mendoza has been an Anglophile for as long as she can remember. Having fallen in love with the UK and with Edinburgh by devouring every single book about the city she could find, quirky pink-haired Star had moved to the Scottish capital and made a new life for herself and she’s the happiest she has ever been. Working in a trendy city centre café allows Star to meet all kinds of people, but there is one gorgeous stranger she simply cannot stop herself from thinking about. But handsome Fin Hunter is totally out of her league…or is he?

When Fin stops coming to the café, Star is absolutely distraught. Fin has become the leading man in her romantic fantasies and it breaks her heart that she will never see him again. However, fate has got a very funny way of giving you what you want when you least expect it – as Star discovers when she runs into the man she has been infatuated with quite by chance. Is this the universe telling her that a future with Fin is possible? Or is Star destined for heartache and disappointment?

Fin Hunter has spent a lifetime trying – and failing – to win his father’s approval. Having spent every single second proving himself to his father and always coming up short, Fin has had enough, so he decides to stop trying to live up to his family’s ideal and to chase his own dream for a change. Romance is the last thing on his mind, but will meeting beautiful Star end up changing his mind?

Will Fin and Star find the happiness that has long been denied to them? If you follow your heart and believe in magic, anything is possible…

It Started With a Kiss is a lovely read that is simply delightful. Lisa Hobman has got an easy and engaging writing style that welcomes you from the beginning and keeps you entertained until the last page. It Started with a Kiss is a heartfelt, emotional and witty romantic read with wonderful characters you will love. Fin and Star are simply perfect for each other and you will keep everything crossed that they manage to weather the storm and embrace this chance at happiness.

An enjoyable romantic tale from a gifted writer, Lisa Hobman’s It Started With a Kiss hits all the right notes.

American Star Mendoza has always been determined to be herself, pink hair, tattoos, and all. She's always had a love for Edinburgh, where she was born and her grandmother still lives. After coming to visit, she decides to stay, finding a job at a coffee shop that her best friend/roommate owns and photographing her favorite city in her downtime. The highlight of her day is when the well dressed businessman she has a crush on comes in for his daily coffee. But when she finally works up the courage to ask about his weekend plans, she's crushed to discover he's getting married the next day. But only a few days later, he's rocking an angry karaoke song at her favorite bar when he should be on his honeymoon. Finn Hunter grew up wealthy and privileged, but always seeking love and approval from his father. He became a lawyer to work in the family firm, even proposed to a woman his parents chose for him even though he doesn't love her. And now, when he's left at the altar, his parents are somehow blaming him! Frustrated and angry, he takes the stage and becomes a different man... a confident, sexy rock god. It's there that he and Star finally connect, and after one kiss, everything changes. Together they'll finally find the courage to follow their dreams. It shouldn't work, the two are so different, but they're perfect together! I just wish they would talk things out instead of assuming what the other is feeling and always getting upset. Finn's parents were truly horrible and it's a wonder that he didn't give up on them long before. I couldn't believe the lengths they went to to control his life! And Alec, the gay boss, best friend, protector, advisor, hero...every girl should have an Alec in their life! It's a sweet story, frustrating at times, but I loved it. Oh boy, this is a fabulous story that ticks a few of my favourite boxes. I’ve recently discovered that I have a real soft spot for romantic fiction that works more on the will they make it angle than the will they ever get together angle. I grant you, this leads to me spending the entire book expecting things to go wrong, and on that front, this is a corker!
Star and Fin are perfect lead characters. Born in Edinburgh but raised in America, Star had never lost her love for everything Scottish and had moved back as soon as she graduated from college. A keen photographer with an accomplished eye for composition, she supported herself by working in a coffee shop and sharing the flat above with her best friend and coffee shop owner, Alec. Having defied his parents by failing to marry fiancée Elise, Finn finds himself both jobless and homeless as his parents try to manipulate him to follow their wishes. No longer working as a solicitor in the family practice, he explores his secret passion for singing. Two things that Star and Fin share are natural talent and zero self-confidence.
Lisa Hobman has wonderful skills when it comes to creating well developed, engaging characters. I felt like Fin and Star were friends and I felt fully engaged in their stories. Of course, there’s a lot more to this fabulous book than just a love story. There’s a legal wrangle as Fin is asked to give his thoughts on a compulsory purchase scheme and huge opportunities if they can just take a risk and believe in their abilities.
There’s a wonderful supporting cast, but for me, Alec stole the show. He was the perfect mix of protective guardian and gay best friend. Whilst he was completely fabulous, Lisa wrote him so perfectly that he didn’t simply slot into the preconceived stereotypes of a gay man.
This is another book from Lisa that I read in a single sitting; a complete page-turner that had me yearning for a night in Edinburgh.

💘Lovely romance & tribute to a great Scottish city😍

Opposites (at least on the surface) attract in Scotland's premiere city and I couldn't be more delighted by the result! Lisa Hobman's recent romances have focused on the dramatically picturesque Scottish Isle of Skye and now, here, she's turned to Edinburgh as her main setting.

It's a clever idea to have the twenty-something American transplant, coffee shop worker Star Mendoza, teach a born and bred Edinburgh man the sights and neglected crannies of his hometown. Star loves exploring and photographing and, with her artistic eye, she teaches Hunter to really see and appreciate Edinburgh, right down to its neglected cemeteries!

But their story is also one of quick attraction, instant connection and helping each other to step out of their routine to reach for the things that give them joy. Yes, there's some serious conflict, largely brought on by Hunter's stuck-up parents, but I always think the hard times make the good times even better by contrast. And Hobman brings in plenty of supportive secondary characters (but not too many) to help them over the rough patches. The romance has heat and intimacy but it's not steamy (personally, I got to the cutaway before the bedroom scenes could develop steam and thought "Hallelujah! An author who knows how to build a romance without total exposure of the saucy bits!") Plus, a really delightful end🤗

If you love this author's books, the main characters are younger than typical in Hobman's recent works but you won't be disappointed because it's quality romance. If you have yet to try one of her novels I recommend It Started With a Kiss as a good introduction to her work.

Thanks to Boldwood Books and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.

Four and a half Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭒
It Started With a Kiss by Lisa Hobman is a lovely romance with opposites attract, all set in Edinburgh, Scotland. I said this is opposites attract, but as the book moves on, I realized they are not opposites at all, as they are very similar deep down.

Star, an American living in Edinburgh, is a free spirit and works in a coffee shop. She loves her adopted city and enjoys taking photos of the historic area. She meets Finn, a local lawyer who comes into her coffee shop most mornings. He works in his father’s firm and has known he would work there his entire life.

Finn has always known what he was going to do in life. Not because it’s something he wants to do, but because being a lawyer at his father’s firm is what was always expected of him. He doesn’t mind his life, much, but when he’s around Star, he learns he wants a lot more out of life.

I loved the setting of this story. Although Finn has lived in Edinburgh his entire life, he, and the reader, get to see the city through the eyes of Star, who loves to explore the city and finds so much beauty everywhere she goes.

Finn and Star are opposites, she’s fun and quirky and works in a coffee shop, and he is rich, formal, and works for a prestigious law firm. But, at heart, they are so much alike. Star and Finn grabbed my attention from the very beginning of the book, and never let me go. Star is such an optimistic character and her love of life is infectious. Finn is a bit formal at the beginning, but when he’s around Star, he’s able to let loose and enjoy life too. They are such a great match and they have real chemistry.

I highly recommend It Started With a Kiss to anyone who loves a good romance.

Thank you #netgalley and #boldwoodbooks for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for an Honest review. Firstly, I really love Lisa Hobman books, they are feel good and emotional. This is an easy flowing read which had me rooting for both characters. We meet Star and Fin and the story follows their individual perspectives. I love that Star has bright pink hair just like Lisa often does. She fell in love with Scotland as a young girl and moves there as a young adult, she had been raised in the Midwest of the US. She works in a coffee shop, which is where she meets the soon to be married Fin. Fin is eager to please his very stern father who borders on being a bully with his expectations of Fin to fulfil the life he has mapped out for him. From the choice of future wife, career to the home he lives in, he had little to no say in them. Then he gets jilted at the alter and life takes a turn. With a lot of pressure from his friend he ends up on Debasement a rock and indie Karaoke bar. Which is where he and Star meet again and a somewhat on again off again Pretty in Pink style Romance begins. Can they both make it with their styles and backgrounds being so different? You will have to read to find out. I do love that one minor character shares my name and the choice of music, from Linkin Park to Pearl Jam, The Darkness and even Kiss' I was made for loving you appear.
