"Ethnicity divides us. Politics divide us. Economics divide us. But with a Bible in nearly every home, it is perhaps, the one document that unifies us."
Steve Green uses statistics to study what Americans believe about the Bible. An uplifting book that navigates the influence of the Bible through American History in 140 pages. This book will propel a reader to study more about the Bible and its influence on society and may even inspire some to open the pages and study for themselves, the greatest book ever written, The Bible.
This is an incredibly uplifting book when you see how many people in America still believe in the Bible and believe it is the most important book in our lives and our country. We don't read it like we should, but this book gives us hope for our lives and our country. This book inspires me to do more to share the Word and encourages me in the work we do as Gideons.
The Bible in America by Steve Green and Todd Hilliard is a concise book on the influence the Bible has had on American culture. It traces the Bible’s influence on the formation of America, American history, science, education, society, and the American people in general. This work is very much a survey of the Bible’s influence. There is not much depth. Most definitions given are basic. This is not a systematic theology of the Bible. Rather, it focuses on several surveys given by various groups over the last 20 years. In fact, the whole book is basically an interpretation of these surveys. The findings are interesting but also outdated since the latest finding were from 2010-2011.
The Bible in America is an easy read. This is a book that anyone can pick up and read quickly. I would like to see a revised edition with newer statistics. I would also like to see more historical and theological information instead of mere sketches. I have given this book 3 stars because it is informative and good; I just think they could make it better.
Author Steven Green was instrumental in assembling a collection of rare Bibles and artifacts to support the opening of the Bible Museum in Washington, D.C. Coinciding with the opening of the Museum, Green has authored The Bible in America. Green explores the physical transformation of the ancient text throughout thousands of years of language translations and technological advancements. Green provides a series of graphs and statistical evidence to illustrate that a majority of Americans still find the Bible to be relevant and hold a valuable place in modern society. The Bible in America is an easy compact read that reaffirms the historical importance of the world’s most importance book.
Very in depth view of how the Bible shaped America's founding and the role it plays in society today. It was extremely surprising to see how many Americans truly believe the role that the Bible has in their everyday lives. The book uses many surveys and graphs to show that the Bible is not dead in American society today, though sometimes it may seem that way. There are constant examples of situations where the Bible has come up in controversial topics such as science and education as well as how they should be dealt with. There is incredible mentions of people in history and there thoughts on the bible. The most striking was a letter written by President John Quincy Adams to his son. This book is incredible for learning the religious backgrounds of our country.
This is an excellent little book that reminds us how important the Bible is to the people of America. There's charts and statistics showing what we believe. There's insightful analysis of the Bible's influence on our science, democracy and society. It reminds us how the founding fathers of America based much of our foundation as a country on the Bible.
Although the book is 5 years old, it was interesting to see the statistics that was provided. I really enjoyed reading about the Bible in the early years of America and how much it has and continues to be utilized as our guiding light. It was an inspirational read.
Honestly SO good. I enjoyed how simple of a read it was considering how much data was present. I think that they did an excellent job of collecting and interpreting the data, as well as creating easy to read graphs. It’s definitely thought provoking!
A wonderful short book on the impact of the Bible not only in the early stages of our country, but also today. The insight provided from founding fathers, scientific leaders, educational icons, and others truly reminded me of how much the Word of God has shaped our nation in the past.
However, with the help of new research polls, this book also showed how much the general public also would like to see the Bible influence more of our lives in today's day and age.
The book is broken down into six sections:
1. The Bible & Americans 2. The Bible in History 3. The Bible in Science 4. The Bible in Education 5. The Bible in Society 6. The Bible & You
I am considering purchasing several cases of this book to give to the members of our church. You will be blessed by reading this book!
What a great book! A ton of research is represented here by Steve Green as to what role the Bible has played in America, what role it is currently playing in America, and what biblical studies and Scripture engagement could do for us going forward.
I was honestly surprised many times by how positively the Bible is viewed in our past and current culture, but many polls presented in The Bible in America prove my conclusions wrong. Perhaps it is because dissenting voices tend to resonate more loudly with us, but I am happy to admit that I was wrong.
If anyone has had any doubt that the Bible is deeply woven into the fabric of our great country, this book does a lot to combat those assumptions. I would highly recommend this to any of my friends who have interest.
