This series had all the ingredients for a romantasy knockoutdeadly trials, forbidden love, morally grey royalty, and a heroine faking her way through a superpowered society. But somewhere between the Plague-gifted Elites and Paedyn’s psychic cosplay, the magic fizzled out.
Let’s start with the good: Paedyn Gray is a compelling concept. An Ordinary surviving in a world that worships power? Yes please. Her enemies-to-lovers arc with Prince Kai Azer brings tension, and the slow-burn romance has its moments. The series flirts with themes of justice, identity, and rebellion. But it never fully commits.
Now the chaos:
- The worldbuilding is vague and inconsistent. Powers exist, but their logic doesn’t. The Plague origin story? Glossed over.
- The pacing across the trilogy is uneven—Powerless drags, Reckless tries to be edgy, and Fearless throws in trauma and rebellion without emotional payoff.
- The writing leans heavily on tropes: Purging Trials = Hunger Games lite, Elite vs Ordinary = Red Queen déjà vu, and the romance? Recycled tension with predictable beats.
- The novellas (Powerful, Fearful) add backstory but feel like filler more vibes than substance.
- Worst offender: the series uses dark themes like genocide and child abuse for shock value, but never explores them with the depth they deserve.
By Fearless, Paedyn’s arc feels rushed and Kai’s moral ambiguity turns into plot whiplash. The rebellion storyline is undercooked, and the emotional stakes never quite land. It’s like the series wanted to be gritty and romantic but couldn’t decide which lane to stay in.
If you’re new to YA romantasy, this might scratch the itch. But if you’ve read Red Queen, The Hunger Games, or Shadow and Bone, this series feels like a remix with the volume turned down. Pretty covers, decent vibes, but not enough bite.

The Powerless series (2023) by Lauren Roberts has been a popular recent release in the fantasy-dystopian genre. I approached this book with high expectations, especially given the hype surrounding it. Unfortunately, my experience turned out very differently.
Powerless takes place in Ilya, a society divided between the powerful Elites and the powerless Ordinaries. The story follows Paedyn Gray, an Ordinary hiding in plain sight by pretending to be a psychic. When she crosses paths with Kai Azer, a high-ranking Elite who also happens to be the prince, her secret is put at risk. Paedyn is forced into the annual Purge, a deadly competition to pick out the strongest Elites. With no real powers, she has to rely on deception, quick thinking, and luck to survive against competitors who can literally kill her with a flick of their fingers. Along the way, her relationship with Kai grows, despite the class divide. The book promises high stakes, survival challenges, and romance, but plays out with predictable twists and recycled tropes.
Words alone cannot describe what this book is: a half plagiarised, innocuously coagulated abomination of the word ‘originality’. As we begin reading, we can draw a concerningly high number of parallels to several other series: Red Queen, revolving around a world where social class is distinctly separated into the dichotomy of powerless and powerful individuals, The Hunger Games, where high-class Capitol citizens watch teenagers fight to death purely for entertainment, and Legend, a dystopian novel which oscillates between the perspectives of a wealthy, high-class elite and a poor, disadvantaged thief. It feels like Roberts copied down these plots onto slips of paper, drew them out of a hat, and let AI fill in the rest.
Despite drawing inspiration from such highly regarded series, the writing style is so boring and monotonous. Usually, I would continue reading my book whenever I had time because I was genuinely engrossed in it. However, reading Powerless in my spare time became an arduous task as I scrolled through a sea of words, eyes glued to the top of the screen which displayed how many pages I had left, persisting in this laborious drudgery for the sake of finishing the book. Even after stealing most ideas from other successful books, Roberts makes no effort to at least sound creative – calling powerless individuals ‘Ordinaries’ and powerful individuals ‘Elites’, naming the desert the ‘Scorches’ (also, the desert in The Maze Runner is called the Scorch too), naming the forest the ‘Whispers’ (cliché metaphor). What was even more exasperating was the ending. After falling asleep through the endless dragging on of hollow repetition and redundant descriptions, the predictable conclusion extinguished any hopes I had for a satisfying resolution. Clearly, Roberts was just as unbothered and disinterested in writing this series as I was in reading it. The word choices are a quintessence of this – the word ‘huff’, or any grammatical variation of this, is used 85 times in the book.
Moreover, I don’t understand the switching between different perspectives of characters in the novel. The dialogue styles, inner monologues, and thoughts of Paedyn and Kai – all the characters, actually – are differentiated by nothing (except maybe a different font), from their childish, fatuous phrases to the character ai vibes it gives. After being portrayed as an Ordinary and ‘not like other girls’, Paedyn’s infuriatingly, acid-reflux-evoking overbearingly overconfident attitude (which made it hard to decide whether I should be rooting for her or not) serves only as a failed attempt to conceal her having zero personality. The enemies to lover trope doesn’t even exist, Kai and Paedyn fall in love at first sight, and their opinions of each other does not progress at all from there. Not to mention that this sort of love is built on ephemeral excitement, youthful infatuation, and shallow admiration. Real love thrives in the soil of mutual affection, deep understanding, and character growth. However, the deeply unlikeable, insular personalities of these characters stubbornly undergo no change whatsoever.
I respect the hard work done by most authors and artists, but personally I cannot understand why this book is so popular, unless swallowing fictional books and regurgitating them onto fancy pieces of paper has somehow become a new celebrated form of art. Describing this series as a derivative is a complete understatement. It’s a completely incoherent disgorgement. I severely regret every wasted second on this sad excuse of a book, and if you are looking to read a dystopian, fantasy, or novel blending both elements, read literally anything else; Powerless is, fittingly, powerless. One out of five stars.

Una ladra, un’orfana, una ragazza comune che riesce a sopravvivere nascondendo la sua vera identità perché vive in un mondo che la condannerebbe se scoprisse chi è realmente. Arguta, coraggiosa e ironica, è un mix perfetto tra Katniss e Mare Barrow, ma con una dose maggiore di cuore e sarcasmo. Quando salva un nobile durante un attacco inaspettato 💰, finisce sotto i riflettori e viene scelta dal Re per partecipare al Torneo di Epurazione: una competizione spietata in cui gli Eletti - coloro che hanno poteri - mostrano le loro abilità. ⚔️ C’è solo un unico problema: Paedyn non possiede alcun potere, quindi se la scoprono, è finita. 😅

Secondogenito del Re. Un guerriero temibile. Apparentemente freddo e distaccato, ma dietro l’armatura si nasconde un ragazzo che vede davvero Paedyn. 🫶🏻 Il loro legame è uno slow burn perfetto fatto di sguardi, piccoli gesti e continue sfide. ❤️🔥
Nonostante il Torneo metta a dura prova la mente e il corpo, Paedyn riesce sopravvivere fingendo di avere poteri che non possiede. Nonostante ciò viene scoperta dal Re che, per mantenere l’ordine e dimostrare il suo potere, decide di giustiziare Paedyn pubblicamente. 🙊 Ma Paedyn aiutata dalla Ribellione riesce ad avere la meglio suo padre..ops volevo dire il Re. 😉
Nel secondo volume non ci sono più maschere: in fuga, tra viaggi pericolosi, conflitti interiori e nuove alleanze, Paedyn dovrà superare le sue più grandi paure. ❤️🩹 Ma in viaggio con lei ci sarà Kai che ha la missione di riportarla viva a suo fratello maggiore Kitt, il nuovo Re. 👑
In questo viaggio on the road, Paedyn e Kai si ritrovano e il loro legame, sebbene lacerato dalla sfiducia, si rafforza man mano che comprendono di essere dalla stessa parte. ✨💞
Proprio quando tutto sembra tranquillo, Kai decide di tornare a Ilya e Paedyn viene inevitabilmente cattura e costretta a sposare Kitt. E così ha inizio la rivoluzione. 🤍
🫐 Paedyn è diventata ciò che non voleva essere: un simbolo. E i simboli non possono permettersi di amare, né di essere umani. 🖤 Kai è tormentato da una lealtà divisa e si trova a combattere contro i propri sentimenti, poiché il suo amore per Paedyn è divenuto viscerale.
In tutto ciò ci sono nuove sfide che Paedyn che superare per dimostrare di essere una Regina per il nuovo regno. Ed proprio durante queste sfide che il legame con Kai si trasforma in un puro tormento: dolce, rabbioso, disperato. Ogni interazione tra loro porta un peso emotivo enorme, poiché ormai conosciamo i rischi che entrambi affrontano😔.
Ma è solo verso la fine del libro, quando Paedyn deve affrontare la terza prova, che oltre alle lacrime (che inevitabilmente verseremo insieme a lei) scopriamo LA VERITÀ 😱. Onestamente, non ci sarei mai arrivata neppure con i capitoli di Edric (il “padre” di Kai e Kitt). MA NON FACCIO TROPPI SPOILER, perché non tutti hanno avuto ancora modo di leggere il capitolo finale della saga.
Però ehi che plot twist 🙈🙉🙊!
Cosa posso aggiungere? Nulla, se non un GRAZIE alla nostra autrice che ci ha regalato una trilogia indimenticabile, una storia d'amore travolgente e un legame fraterno unico e indivisibile (o quasi). 👏
👉🏻 Lo consiglio? Assolutamente!! Soprattutto se amate le storie d’amore travagliate e i fantasy rivoluzionari.

Paedyn en Kai keren samen terug naar Ilya. Eenmaal daar aangekomen, staat hen een onaangename verrassing te wachten die hun beide levens voorgoed zal veranderen. Niet alleen Paedyns lot wordt bezegeld door de belangrijke beslissing aan het hof, maar ook het hele koninkrijk van Ilya. Zal Paedyn het koninkrijk waarvan ze houdt kunnen redden? En ook een prins? Of zal ze moeten kiezen?
Mijn ervaring:
Grandioos! Echt een GE-WEL-DIG laatste deel, waarmee Lauren Roberts je echt compleet weet te overrompelen en op indrukwekkende, spannende en originele wijze het verhaal nog verschillende wendingen en gebeurtenissen weet te geven en op mooie wijze weet af te sluiten. Lauren Roberts heeft een filmische, vlotte en levendige schrijfstijl en ondanks dat het even geleden was dat ik deel twee las, zat ik na een paar bladzijden weer compleet in het verhaal. Je gaat helemaal op in de wereld Ilya, je leeft met de personages en de gebeurtenissen mee en tot aan het einde weet Lauren Roberts je in spanning te houden na de afloop.
Ook in dit verhaal lezen we het verhaal vanuit het perspectief van Paedyn en Kai, maar ook ditmaal vanuit Edric Azer. De eerste twee zijn al enorm sterk, realistisch en met diepgang in de twee vorige delen uitgewerkt. Het is sterk hoe Edric in dit verhaal een verrassende en originele intrede in het verhaal weet te maken. Daarbij laat Lauren Roberts ook de personages aan de hand van de gebeurtenissen en wendingen in de verhaallijn transformeren. Daarbij wist de wending van Kai me echt te overrompelen.
Het verhaal sluit weer naadloos aan op het vorige deel, waarbij Kai en Paedyn inmiddels zijn teruggekeerd naar Ilya. Daar zorgt een onaangename verrassing voor een spannend, origineel en indrukwekkend laatste deel. Het verhaal zit weer enorm sterk in elkaar en het is mooi hoe Lauren Roberts ook gebeurtenissen uit deel één en twee terughaalt die van invloed zijn op de gebeurtenissen en wendingen in dit laatste deel. Ook de spanning en de verhoudingen tussen Kitt, Kai en Paedyn zijn tastbaar beschreven en zorgen ervoor dat je dit spannende en indrukwekkende verhaal niet los kan laten. Het plot wist me echt compleet te overrompelen en van mijn sokken te blazen. Wat een twist en wending in de verhaallijn. Wel weet Lauren Roberts deze trilogie echt een mooi, volledig en compleet einde te geven, waardoor je deze serie met een voldaan en goed gevoel afsluit.
Fearless is een verpletterend, origineel en erg spannend derde en laatste deel van deze romantasy serie. Lauren Roberts heeft een filmische, vlotte en levendige schrijfstijl en weet je echt compleet het verhaal in te trekken. De delen sluiten naadloos op elkaar aan, maar bijna direct weet Lauren Roberts een onaangename twist in de verhaallijn te brengen, die ervoor zorgt dat ook dit laatste deel je grijpt en die je niet meer los kan laten. Wat een pakkend, spannend en indrukwekkend verhaal, waarbij ook gebeurtenissen uit de twee vorige delen van invloed zijn op gebeurtenissen in het laatste deel. Het plot blaast je compleet van je sokken, maar Lauren Roberts weet deze geweldige serie wel echt compleet, mooi en volledig af te sluiten. Dit is gewoon echt een serie die je MOET gaan lezen.
Mijn ervaring:
Grandioos! Echt een GE-WEL-DIG laatste deel, waarmee Lauren Roberts je echt compleet weet te overrompelen en op indrukwekkende, spannende en originele wijze het verhaal nog verschillende wendingen en gebeurtenissen weet te geven en op mooie wijze weet af te sluiten. Lauren Roberts heeft een filmische, vlotte en levendige schrijfstijl en ondanks dat het even geleden was dat ik deel twee las, zat ik na een paar bladzijden weer compleet in het verhaal. Je gaat helemaal op in de wereld Ilya, je leeft met de personages en de gebeurtenissen mee en tot aan het einde weet Lauren Roberts je in spanning te houden na de afloop.
Ook in dit verhaal lezen we het verhaal vanuit het perspectief van Paedyn en Kai, maar ook ditmaal vanuit Edric Azer. De eerste twee zijn al enorm sterk, realistisch en met diepgang in de twee vorige delen uitgewerkt. Het is sterk hoe Edric in dit verhaal een verrassende en originele intrede in het verhaal weet te maken. Daarbij laat Lauren Roberts ook de personages aan de hand van de gebeurtenissen en wendingen in de verhaallijn transformeren. Daarbij wist de wending van Kai me echt te overrompelen.
Het verhaal sluit weer naadloos aan op het vorige deel, waarbij Kai en Paedyn inmiddels zijn teruggekeerd naar Ilya. Daar zorgt een onaangename verrassing voor een spannend, origineel en indrukwekkend laatste deel. Het verhaal zit weer enorm sterk in elkaar en het is mooi hoe Lauren Roberts ook gebeurtenissen uit deel één en twee terughaalt die van invloed zijn op de gebeurtenissen en wendingen in dit laatste deel. Ook de spanning en de verhoudingen tussen Kitt, Kai en Paedyn zijn tastbaar beschreven en zorgen ervoor dat je dit spannende en indrukwekkende verhaal niet los kan laten. Het plot wist me echt compleet te overrompelen en van mijn sokken te blazen. Wat een twist en wending in de verhaallijn. Wel weet Lauren Roberts deze trilogie echt een mooi, volledig en compleet einde te geven, waardoor je deze serie met een voldaan en goed gevoel afsluit.

This series is nothing to write home about. The writing is nothing special and the plot gets confusing.
However.. I did enjoy! Granted, the main reason for this series getting 3 stars was the 2nd novel, Reckless. That book, controversially, got a 5 stars from me. Reckless for me was a romance book mainly, the genre I find myself going back to again and again, so this truthfully is no surprise.
Powerless and Fearless also were both fun! Infact, Fearless may have had my favourite scene of the whole series (spoiler warning, a certain blonde character passing). However, I just don’t have much I have to say about them.
Overall, I cried. A lot. I loved Paedyn as a character and she deserved BETTER. Like to an extent I would’ve sacrificed literally anyone for her, even Kai, even Adena (maybe not, actually). I hate Kitt with a passion burning so violently it could actually cause Irys to combust.
If you’re reading this series for good writing, lots of fantasy or for something that you can think truly hard about, don’t. (I made the mistake of thinking hard about it, trust me.)
Okay I’m done. I’m not speaking on the novellas because all I have to say is idgaf. Adena’s made me sad and cry like once, Kitts enraged me. I hate that man.

i rather liked this series. it was cute, had me on the edge of my seat a few times, and the main characters were both cool.
the only issue was that this book had nothing original or unique about it. everything that happened was so generic and cliche, it was basically every other tiktok book i've ever read.
but yeah! casual read! it's fun, keeps you hooked, but you forget all about it in two business hours.

The powerless trilogy is one of the best series I have ever read. The captivating tale of Paedyn and Kai keeps me from putting the book down until i'm done, and then wishing for more. For her debut series, this is amazing and everyone who loves Fantasy Romance, Enemies-to-Lovers, and a bit of magic should read this series. Easily 5 stars.

Thought it was a fun read! Definitely a YA read with very little spice, but TONS of tension! Kick your feet & giggle kind of banter. Different magic system than what’s usually out there. Enjoyed books 1 & 2–couldn’t out them down! Book 3 felt a little rushed to finish, but still enjoyed the characters & resolution to the series.

I love a good Romantasy and this series was good but felt like some of the series scenes were dragged out unnecessarily to fill space.. it was a very slow start. There isn’t any juicy scenes like most other books in the genre but you do fall in love with the characters and feel the emotions as if you are there yourself.

pretty decent with the trials, but there was just too much yearning in it for me. I love slow burn romance but there's a point where things seem repetitive and by the third book I was forcing myself to finish the book.

Really enjoyed this series, however the novella was one of the worst things I've ever read. I almost didn't read the second book because I was so disappointed after loving Powerless. Glad I continued.

I absolutely love this series! It is the type of series that plays a film in your mind, a vivid, heartbreaking, emotional rollercoaster of a film. All the books in this series made me smile and cry and gasp and squeal, and her books fill a reader with such a love for her characters. Payden Grey and Kai Azer and Kitt Azer and Adena (or A if you've read Powerful) are all beautifully crafted characters. The incredible writing from Lauren Roberts brings her world to life for so many readers and the Powerless trilogy is one of the best YA series I have read this year.
