I hate them.

Another endearing cat manga that makes me cry my eyes out? Yes, please!

This is such a thoughtful, little story.

In this first volume, we’re introduced to Maruru, Hachi, and the gang of stray cats who call Third Street home. Maruru is a former house cat who got lost one day and is now trying to make it on the streets. Hachi is the top cat around Third Street who takes Maruru under his paw (so to speak) after Maruru helps him out of a tough spot. Along with the rest of the strays on Third Street, Maruru and Hachi try to survive what each new day brings.

Though ostensibly being about stay cats, this story touches upon a lot of different topics.

For example, grief and abandonment are key themes this story explores. We see that acutely with each of the cat’s stories concerning how they ended up on the street. But, this story also touches upon other important issue like that of aging—we see that with the story of the old lady who feeds the strays until she has to be sent away to a care home.

There’s also a lot of implicit commentary about community and what it means to grow in concert with all elements of one’s neighborhood.

Anyway.

I’m really digging this story so far.

Definitely looking forward to reading more of this series. If you are a fan of cat manga like me or if you enjoy a thoughtful slice-of-life series, I’d definitely recommend picking up this manga. This is a great choice for readers who enjoyed other manga like “A Story of Seven Lives” or “She and Her Cat”~

I haven't read a manga of this style (black and white art) and wasn't sure if I'd enjoy it. While I think I'd prefer color, I found the black and white style didn't put me off. After a few pages I was sucked into the lives of the cats and wondering what would come of them! Maruru was adjusting to a new life on the streets when he encounters Hachi, a seasoned stray. I was glad they teamed up because it was sad to see Maruru struggling alone. It's a hard life for the street cats, where they never know if they can get food, water and shelter. Though their life is hard, I saw nice moments between cats and the bond forming with the pair. You can see how they come to care for each other over time and become friends. The only cat I felt (extra) concern for was Scruffy (Kedama), with the mouth sores and matted fur. I hope Yasuo can get her to the vet soon!

Some reviewers said it's a sad, depressing story. I understand that POV, but I saw it as realistic. Stray and feral cats do worry about food, water, shelter, territory and health issues. I actually appreciated that the story did not gloss over these struggles, because then it'd seem too unrealistic. The story also serves as a way to educate people on the life of a stay - those who might not realize the dangers and hardships they have to deal with. Not everyone thinks of these things when they get a cat and let it roam or encounter a neighborhood stay.

I am definitely curious about how the lives of the cats will progress, so will be on the lookout for the next book! How will the cats get food with the old lady gone? Will they keep living on the streets?

I was reading this in the Edelweiss web reader and assumed, because the book was in English, that page 1 would be the beginning. It wasn't! I realized I needed to go to the last page and move backwards to read it correctly. 😂

I was provided access to this title via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

It's my first time, so REALLY hoping to did everything correctly on Edelweiss re: my review!

Cutest little story about the life of two cats that befriend over being street cats. There is one overall plot, that contains several small stories of their adventures. Just lovely and funny to read.

Better than I was expecting, I appreciated how this focused more on Maruru and Hachi's relationship and life as stray cats, than the usual interactions between humans and cats.

Of course, it feels a bit more realistic than other cat mangas, in the fact the feline characters took center stage and a lot of humane traits are given to them, in the form of dialogue and thoughts. But, as a said, pretty enjoyable and endearing.

I will probably continue this series to know what's going to happen with the cats, now that things are majorly changing in their turf.

Cat Companions Maruru and Hachi is a touching, relaxing slice of life that takes us deep into the world of stray cats, exploring their struggles for survival in a harsh, uncaring world. The story focused around Maruru, a former house cat who finds himself lost and unable to find his way back home. Alone and vulnerable, Maruru crosses paths with Hachi, a grumpy but wise street-smart cat who rules Third Street. Though Hachi has little patience for Maruru at first, he takes him under his wing, showing him the ropes of surviving as a stray. As their bond deepens, Maruru learns the importance of survival skills, companionship, and how to protect those who matter most.

At first glance, Cat Companions may seem like a lighthearted, whimsical tale about cats and their silly moments. But beneath the surface, the story delves into deep, heart-wrenching themes like grief, abandonment, aging and survival. A story from a cat's perspective will never fail to make me cry, especially in the story depicting a stray cat's life (from when they were adopted to where the owner is getting rid of them) and how the cat is trying to find food everywhere as long as they can survive. While the Third Street stray cats have their food sources from the old lady, it is also devastating to see both perspectives where the old lady is getting much older and seldom forgets to feed them.

The details of the journey of Maruru and Hachi with their growing friendship, the quiet acts of kindness shared between them and the other stray cats—make you want to cuddle them and wonder what would happen next. It's a hard life as they never know if they can get food, water and shelter especially when they go through each season. I also love how we get a lot of heartwarming moments between Maruru, Hachi and the other cats as well. You can see how they come to care for each other over time and become friends.

While it is easy to see it as a depressing and emotional story, Maruru and Hachi journey was also filled with warmth and wholesome moments. Sure, their lives are hard, but the beauty of the story lies in how it doesn't shy away from the stray cats reality, and it does not sugarcoat things. The hardship they faced through is hard to read but an eye opener; it makes you reflect on the difficulties stray animals face in a world where they are frowned upon, abused, starving, and there's almost no welcoming place for them. It is heartbreaking to see stray cats searching desperately for food and shelter, and this should serves as a reminder of the struggles that many animals face when they are left to fend for themselves.

Overall, Cat Companions Maruru and Hachi is a beautiful reminder of the resilience of animals, the quiet dignity in their survival, and the unspoken bonds that form even in the toughest of times. It’s a story that leaves mixed feelings and perhaps makes us a little more aware of the challenges faced by stray animals in our world. I'm looking forward to reading more of Maruru and Hachi's journey! Giving this 5 ⭐️ Thank you Edelweiss for providing me this cute review copy in exchange for an honest review.

I first saw this series at a huge manga bookstore here in Belgium. The manga here is called Chats Des Rue (street cats) but after browsing through it in store, I knew I had to get it in the English version. The story follows Maruru & Hachi- an unlikely but adorable duo just trying to survive the streets while they try to evade danger. It’s a hard knock life in the streets for the cats. ToT

The manga is insanely cute but a little heart breaking at times. My rescue cat was a street cat himself for a while but he’s just the sweetest thing ever. I thought about him and the trials he must have had before he was rescued. I just know I’m about to binge on this Manga series and that’s exciting because I haven’t read a manga in years. Cats are little gods that roam amongst us. I love them so much.

Adorable. So funny, not just for kids w/ the ball spaying humor. Made me so sad at points. Lots of shorts so not just a story about a naïve lost house pet meeting a “mafia boss” like stray and surviving the winter. I especially love the super fluffy, dirty, drooly black cat that reminds me of my own.
