Jake Stevens has it made. A local police officer with an open invitation to any number of beds around town, Jake has no desire to settle down with any of the ladies he entertains by night. After watching his best friend fall in love with his little sister, Jake is certain that love and marriage just aren’t in his cards. Heck, he’s not even playing with the same deck. After Jake encounters a blast from the past one night, he finds himself swimming in uncharted waters. For the first time, Jake has found a woman he can’t get out of his mind. The kicker? The woman wants nothing to do with him. Erin Anderson returns to the small Missouri town of Rivers Edge for a job after a twenty year absence. Erin spent years loathing the memory of Jake Stevens for his cruelness back in seventh grade. Now, Jake appears to be the same self-centered player he was in junior high, and no one seems to be able to push her button the way the cocky, yet devastatingly handsome cop does. Between circumstances that keep thrusting them together and Jake’s persistence to annoy her, Erin struggles to fight her growing feelings for Jake. But, can Erin get past the hurt she felt all those years ago at the hands of a young Jake? Can Jake show Erin that what they have is worth fighting for? * This book contains graphic language and detailed sex and is recommended for those 18 and over.
Avid reader, writer, mother, and wife! I love to read contemporary romance. Add in a little "spice" or hot guys in uniform pants, and I'm a happy woman. There's just something about diving into a book and engrossing in the magic of your hero and heroine getting their happily ever after.
Thinking I'm just going to skip this one. Jake and Erin are in their 30's. I swear it feels like they are in high school. Maybe the next brother will be better:-)
I read book 1 of this series and had to continue straight to book 2. By this time you can bet I am shoving this author in everyones face. READ IT. LOVE THIS.
Jake Stevens and Erin Anderson met in middle school. Erin just focused on school and a couple of close friends while Jake went out of his way to tease and embarrass her until his last incident had her leaving the small town for good. Twenty years later she is back as the town librarian and Jake is police officer. As if a moth to light Jake is determined to get to know Erin better, but she has not forgiven him for his past. As Jake continues to insert himself in Erin's life he finds himself in unchartered waters as he has always been a player and now he is wanting to build something with Erin.
Very fun read. Jake is bossy and Erin fights him at every turn. I loved that Jake was off kilter with Erin and she was equally so with Jake. I need to go back and read the first book but from what I can tell this is a very good series so far.
I didn't care much for the characters in this one. The women constantly hitting on Jake every place the two went was super annoying. Give me a break. Jake was a little too smarmy and Erin was a little too feminist up her own butt. You can't complain about a man's behavior one minute then make out with him the next.
Another cute book in this series.. I didn't love it like I did the first book....going to be hard to top sexy Maddox from that one.. but this one was still good
This is the second book in Lacey Black's Rivers Edge series. Ms. Black has done it again with another great story in this sexy, small town series. I've really come to love these characters and this series, and it's a direct result of Ms. Black's writing style and storytelling abilities. I was so impressed by her writing with her debut novel, Trust Me, that I knew I wouldn't be disappointed with this one, and I absolutely wasn't.
Erin Anderson and Jake Stevens have a history that goes back to the seventh grade. Erin, an only child, was an military brat moving often with her parents when her father's career as an officer required it. She was shy, quiet and a little unsure of herself. Jake, the oldest of five children in the Stevens household, is the class clown, the boy all the girls crushed on, charming and mischievous. He and Erin meet on their first day, and from that day forward, Jake does all that he can to get a rise out of or fluster Erin. Unbeknownst to Erin until she arrives at school one day, Jake taken his teasing of Erin a few steps too far and has humiliated her in front of the whole school. Her pain is so great, Erin never returns to school, leaving town to go live in Mississippi with her grandmother.
"I finally thought I'd found a place. A place where I actually fit in."
Twenty years later, Erin returns to Rivers Edge to fill the retiring librarian's position. She has a chance encounter with Jake, and she makes it very clear that she wants nothing to do with him. She manages to avoid him for a few months while she settles into her life in Rivers Edge. She sees him again at the old librarian's retirement party, and she reiterates to him that they are not friends.
"I wasn't your friend then, and I'm not your friend now."
Jake, having served in the Marines, is a ten year veteran of the Rivers Edge Police Department. He's troubled by Erin's dismissal, he's very ashamed of how he treated Erin as a boy, and he struggles to find the right way to apologize. Jake is a good older brother to his siblings, a childhood best friend to his patrol partner and soon-to-be brother-in-law, and a doting uncle to his four year old niece. Jake is a man who is used to having women fall all over him. He thinks Erin is gorgeous, and he's not handling it well that she is less than receptive to his overtures, attempts to reconnect, and offers of friendship.
Jake is persistent though, and he uses a chance to help Erin when she really needs it to sneak past her defenses. Once he gets there, he digs his heels in and he's staying! Erin is a bit flustered by Jake's attention. She doesn't know what to make of it or him. Slowly but surely, though, Jake is cracking through her protective shell. She meets, and genuinely likes, his family, striking up a friendship with Jake's sister, Avery. Jake keeps at it, and eventually convinces her to go on a date with him.
Jake continues slowly but steadily entrenching her in his life and he in hers. He is wearing her down, and Jake is surprised by the depth of the feelings he has for Erin. He's a known player, a guy who doesn't do relationships or long-term, but he's thinking about both of those things with Erin. She is still cautious, but she's falling for him. It takes a near tragedy for Erin to realize what is in her heart, but after that event they become nearly inseparable. Erin is even involved in helping with Avery and Maddox's wedding.
"She is that piece that has been missing from my life..."
I loved watching Jake, the player who has never had a serious relationship before, fall for Erin. He was so surprised by how strong his feelings for her were, and he struggled with figuring out what to do about it. Erin, who started out hating Jake for all the pain he caused her 20 years before, fell just as hard and took that leap of faith, although cautiously, stepping way outside her comfort zone for Jake. The author really let us into their heads to experience these feelings and thoughts right along with them.
One of my favorite things about reading is getting lost in the story, which sadly doesn't always happen. For me, it's happened with both of Lacey Black's books. She has this natural quality to her writing that just immediately captures the reader and draws them right into the story. She's very detailed and thorough, and I love that she uses dual points of view; I especially love getting inside the head of the Hero and knowing what he's thinking and feeling, and the author did this spectacularly.
Lacey Black has quickly become a favorite author for me. She is an exceptionally talented author and story teller. I truly adore this series, and I cannot wait to see what happens next. She has created a great series here, hitting all the right notes so expertly. She has easily earned a spot on my auto buy, one-click list. Another stellar offering from the talented Lacey Black!
I loved this book. I enjoyed this first book in this series, Trust Me, and I couldn't wait to read Jake's story. And let me tell you, this book did not disappoint. This is a sweet romance with a few twists to keep you hanging on until the end. This book was sexy, sweet, and had tons of laugh out loud moments. I love Jake's family and their bonds and connection.!
This is Jake and Erin's story. This book opens up with a bang giving us a glimpse into the history of Jake and Erin. Years and tons of life experiences later, Erin is back in town taking a job as head librarian. Jake is a cop and playboy by night. When Jake and Erin's worlds collide, Jake makes it known he is sorry for the past and wants a shot with Erin. Jake will stop at nothing to make her his. As these two ensue a relationship, they will face obstacles. Will Erin fight for Jake? Will Jake be able to prove his love and devotion to Erin? Will these two get a happy ending?
I loved Jake and Erin together. I loved their bond and friendship their formed. It was easy to connect with them because their chemistry just poured off of the pages. And between the sheets... these two were scorching. I loved Jake's family and how they folded Erin right into the fold. And Erin! She was so funny. I loved the moment she decided to find her inner "bad girl" librarian!
I can't wait for the next book in this series! I highly recommend this book and series!
I never leave bad reviews but I also don't want to leave a low rating without an explanation. I read the first book in this series and found it sweet and lighthearted. Not much angst, it was an easy read and I liked the characters and was excited to read jake's story... Unfortunately, there really wasn't one. Erin and jake had a past, he hurt her feelings in 7th grade, she moved away, she comes back as an adult, he apologizes, they kiss, go on a few dates, have sex, he gets shot in the arm and they they fall in love. Besides one misunderstanding and a few bumps on each of their noggins, there is no drama, no witty dialogue and the sex... I skimmed through it.. Translation: boring. I really wanted to like this book because I liked jakes character from the first one but this was just boring. I forced myself to finish it hoping something would spark but nope.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
4 ½ ★ This is the second book in the Rivers Edge series. It can be read as a standalone but it better to read in order of the series to get a better feel of the characters and family dynamic. I absolutely loved this book and lacey Black has done it again. Pulled me into the story and the characters very early on. I loved how Jake and Erin could not have been more different form each other and yet they made the perfect couple. Both are super stubborn and they clash quite a bit but in the end they attraction to each other is just too much to handle.
As much as I really wanted to love this book I didn't. I enjoyed the first book – it was a sweet romance that kept my interest all the way through. This one, not so much.
I was so excited for Jake and Erin’s story, I love me an unrequited, enemies to lovers book but this one just didn't fit the bill. It kinda fell flat after the prologue and nothing much happened. There was a bit of a hiccup when he got shot then it fell flat again. I hate to say it but I was bored, and kept going in the hopes that something would happen.
I jumped into this without reading book one, Trust Me. Although this is a standalone I think I'd have enjoyed reading book one first.
When Erin moved back to town she bumps into Jake. These two didn't part on good terms. Jake wants Erin. However Erin hates him with a passion. He hurt her in the past. Can she forgive him? Can he prove that he's changed for the better?
Really enjoyed this story. Looking forward to reading more by this author.
Jake Stevens is a police officer by day and manwhore by night. Erin is the new librarian in rivers edge.
Jake and Erin have history. horribly embarrassing history that happened twenty years ago and involved Jake letting the whole school read Erins diary.
Erin is now back after landing a job as the town's librarian. to Jake's dismay Erin wants nothing to do with him. But Jake has been harboring a little secret of his own since they first met in school. Erin may not want anything to do with Jake but when Jake wants something he'll do anything in his power to get it. and he has his eyes set on Erin.
When i first read Trust Me i immediately loved Jake and wanted his story. I was excited to learn Jake's story was next. I did enjoy this novel but it was just okay for me. It felt a little rushed in some areas. I also felt the supporting characters overshadowed the main characters in this novel.
Lacey Black's first novel in the Rivers Edge Series, Trust Me, was Avery and Maddox's story and I loved it! This one is about her brother Jake and Erin, the girl he briefly met and teased in 7th grade. Erin's parents moved around a lot and as an army brat, she never quite had a chance to have a stable childhood. But when she got to Rivers Edge, she hoped this time it would be different. A shy introvert, Erin recorded her deepest thoughts and desire in her journal, writing down all the hurts and wishes she had in her life.
Jake was the popular, bad boy. Erin secretly crushed on him, but knew someone like her could never attract someone like him. But Jake teased her constantly, always trying to get her attention. Like most immature boys, he teased her to get her to notice him. Did that work-no, but what 7th grade boy is smart enough to realize that? What he did do was to take her journal and pass it around so everyone knew her secrets. She was so humiliated and upset that she convinced her parents to send her to her grandmother's and she left.
Twenty years later, Erin returns to town to take over the position vacated by the retiring librarian. Other than a brief encounter in a grocery store, she has successfully avoided Jake. She may not have thought much of that encounter, but it has stayed with Jake.
Jake hasn't been able to get Erin out of his mind since he ran into her at the grocery store. She seemed to have so much hatred for him and he can't understand why. He also never knew why she suddenly left school all those years ago. Obviously, he didn't realize just how horrible his actions were and how badly Erin was hurt.
"I just needed to get away, Jake. The thought that everyone at school knew my secrets, my thoughts, hurt me. I wanted to be invisible and when you showed everyone my journal, you took that away from me. I was the girl who whined about her parents. The girl who cried herself to sleep at the thought of having to pick up and move one more time. The girl who had the biggest crush on the boy that every girl in school had a crush on. The girl who watched her entire life unravel before her eyes and couldn't do a thing to stop it."
Jake is a police officer and is a major player. His partner Maddox may be getting married to his sister, Avery, but there is no way he will follow suit. Hooking up with one night stands at Jack's Pub is more than enough for him. He loves his job and he is close to his family, especially Avery's daughter Brooklyn and his life is full.
But Jake is attracted to Erin and asks her out every chance he gets. Eventually he wears her down and they share a ton of chemistry.
Jake's tongue dives into my mouth, kissing me like he's a dying man and I am the only thing keeping him alive. His tongue duels my tongue, sliding against each other in the most delicious way. My entire body goes up in flames.
But Jake's job puts him in danger at any given moment and a domestic violence call will be the catalyst that Erin needed to admit that she has the same feelings for Jake that he has for her. Both of them have found the other half of themselves with each other that they didn't know they were missing. Now if they could just stop fighting...
"Whatever, Jake. I'm done being humiliated by you. You just confirmed that you are the exact same person you were twenty years ago. A spoiled selfish boy who only cares about getting what he wants; be damned with everyone else."
There are a lot of siblings in the Stevens. I'm looking forward to the next installment in the Rivers Edge Series.
This is the second novel in the Rivers Edge Series. I was in love with the first novel Trust Me so when Lacey asked me to beta read this one I was so honored and extremely excited. I could not wait to read Jake and Erin's story after meeting them in Trust Me.
Jake and Erin have history that goes back 20 years when they were in the Seventh Grade. Erin was a new student and Jake loved to get a rise out of her and one day he just went to far. So far that only after being in Rivers Edge, Erin leaves town and doesn't return until she accepts a new job and is ready to start a new life.
Even since Jake run into Erin a few months back in the grocery store he has not been able to get her off his mind. The problem is that Erin hates him and has been avoiding him at every turn. So when one night she needs help, he is there in lighting speed and after seeing her again he wants her even more. He is even surprised how much she is in his head, he has never been like this with any other woman, he is more of a one night stand type of guy. He can deny it all he wants but even his family and friends see it, he has it bad for the librarian.
Erin was broken after what Jake did to her all of those years ago but when she is around him she still gets flustered and hot. She wants to believe that he can change his ways but it's hard when it's all over town and she feels she is really not his type. She is quiet, plain and professional but he brings out the naughty side in her like no other. She can't fight it, it's there. The attraction. The heat. The feelings.
I love Jake, he is sexy and bossy cop with a big heart. He is also cocky and when he knows what he wants, he fights for it. He loves his family and friends and sure knows his baseball. Erin is someone I would instantly be friends with, she is a book lover, fun and a sweetheart with a dirty side. She didn't have many friends going up so when she is thrown into the Stevens family before she even wanted to she was welcomed with open arms.
Jake and Erin might fight which also equal passion but is it enough? Can Erin forgive and forget what happened all those years ago? Can she trust him with her heart? Can Jake change his ways?
This was a hot, fun and emotional read. It was also nice to catch up with Maddox and Avery and of course little Brooklyn, I just can't get enough of that cuteness. You also get a glimpse into Travis, the younger brother that will be next to get a book. Oh man, I am already itching to get my hands on that one.
Quotes:
Is that a question or a demand?
"I wasn't so much into the books here as I was in rounding the bases."
"That was smooth. You should have just whipped out your dick and peed on the ground around her to mark your territory."
Fight Me by Lacey Black was a great book and i happily give it 5 stars. This book had me laughing, and shedding some tears. The Love of Jake and Erin is so very well written. Lacey Black did a great job with Jake and Erin and enjoyed watching their characters evolve. The part where Jake got shot was very emotional and was one of the parts that had me shedding a few tears. I love how they were able to get past their rough past. The way the family is so supportive of each other in good times and bad was a real feel good part of the book. I definetly lost myself in the book and with the characters. This would make a great movie, and I would be front and center watching it :-)

I was given an ARC for my honest review.
Have you ever read a book and instantly thought wow this could be a lifetime movie. Well this was my thought when reading Lacey Black's fight me. Although it is the second book in the series this is the first book I have read by her. I am in love with Jake. And Erin she doesnt take any crap. These two have history and we get to see the history before we are brought to present time years later. They have a love-hate relationship and we get to watch as they come together. This book made you feel all kinds of emotions. You will fall in love with Jake and Erin. I definitely recommend this book.
~~~~Sarah's Review~~~
I absolutely loved this story about Jake and Erin! Jake was your very typical popular hot guy in school and after spending some time in the military he comes home and serves as a police officer. Erin was a shy quiet middle schooler when she left their small town and returns as an adult to be the new librarian. The instant they are reunited sparks are flying! There was a lot of humor, especially in the form of witty remarks by Maddox (Jake's best friend) and Avery (Jake's sister). There were a few emotional moments as well as Erin had to wrap her around belonging somewhere after being a military brat and moving so much as well as accepting unconditional friendship from Avery. I particularly enjoyed watching Jake struggle with his denial about falling for Erin. In the end this was an easy, mostly conflict free story that warmed my heart.
I will admit I have not read book 1, Trust Me, in this series but after seeing how much it was referenced in this book I will recommend you do. I plan to one-click ASAP. Definitely looking forward to Travis's story in 2015.
We are back in Rivers Edge, Missouri for Fight Me starring Jake Stevens confirmed bachelor #1, Avery's older brother & Maddox's best-friend, and Erin Anderson. Erin Anderson was an military brat and moved more times in her childhood than she could count, bringing her to the small town of Rivers Edge for seventh grade. This pit stop ended up being shorter than most when Jake made more waves for Erin than she's comfortable with. Although adolescent Jake had no knowledge of the repercussions of his juvenile actions, he tormented Erin to the point of chasing her away to her grandmothers to finish out her schooling. Back in the present and taking up where we left off with Avery & Maddox's story, Erin is back in Rivers Edge to fill the librarian position. Jake is of course enamored when he comes across her one night in the grocery store and can't get her out of his head. To his dismay though, Erin still holds a grudge about their past and proves quite the challenge. But Erin is the only woman in Jake's head and he is unwilling to let her get away a second time. This edition of the Steven's family was just as good as the other. Taking Jake down a couple notches and going along with the fall into love with he & Erin was sweet and enjoyable. Off to enjoy the next Steven's in this series Expect Me Erin Jake
After reading the first book in this series (Trust Me), I was prepared to get a glimpse into how Jake bullied Erin as a child that was so traumatic as to send her away from Rivers Edge. As a mother, reading what happened in the prologue of Fight Me was so heartbreaking to read with kids being so cruel in school these days. Erin's humiliation was heartbreaking to read, but I was even more surprised at reading Jake's reaction to her embarrassment. The fact that Erin had waited for years to finally find a town to call home and made new friends, only to feel like she had to leave them, made me all the more sad for her. What I loved about Erin was that she persevered and was strong enough to return to Rivers Edge, unafraid to face what/who had broken her so many years ago.
Now 20 years later, Jake is remorseful and apologizes for what he did to Erin when they were in middle school. Much to Erin's dismay, circumstances keep bringing them together, the sparks start to fly, and you can't help but root for Jake and Avery to get their happy ending. Can Avery get past her insecurities with Jake and his past treatment of her, and embrace the undeniable connection that they've had since they first met when they were kids? I loved reading this story to find out!
Travis' story is next, and March 2015 can't get here fast enough!
This is the first book I have read by this author and since it is the second in this serial, I was not familiar with Jake. And while this is a standalone, I do believe it would be better enhanced by reading book one first. All that being said, I really loved this book. Erin and Jake have a little history, ok not necessarily history as a love/hate relationship. I really loved how Ms. Black let's us see what that is in the prologue. Then fast forward a number of years later and Erin is back in town and Jake, who is the bad boy turned cop. I absolutely love that the author had their relationship build and it is plain to see that they still have a love/hate relationship although it is more that way for Erin than Jake. Jake is a character that is written for you to love and boy did I ever love him. Erin is the fiery, take no crap woman who you will be rooting for the entire book. I was hooked from the very beginning and could not wait to see there story unfold. It was ultimately a really outstanding read. I will definitely be recommending this book to my friends and now that I have read this one, I will be reading book one now. This was an easy 5 AMAZEBALLS stars for me. A copy was gifted in exchange for an honest review.
Erin Anderson moves to Rivers Edge, Missouri to take over as Liberian as the one they presently have retires. She lived in this town when she was in seventh grade but thanks to a young man, Jake Stevens, she was made fun of when he stole her journal and let everyone read it. It had all her personal thoughts and feelings in it and she left town and went to live with her grandmother. Now at 32 she is returning to this town. One of the first people she sees is Jake and she tries to avoid him. They talk and start to work on a friendship, of sorts. As time goes on she gets close to his family and his sister, Avery, who is planning her wedding. Jake and Erin become romantically involved and like every relationship it has ups and downs. Jake doesn't want to settle down but there is something about Erin that has him thinking other ways. Jake and his friend Maddox, who is marrying Avery, are both police officers in this small town. He can't seem to get her out of his head. This book does contain some profanity and sexual scenes. Read this as you find out as Erin fights to not love Jake.
I was pulled right into this story. The story flowed well I read it in one sitting. The story has laughs, betrayal, pain, and heartbreak.
This is Erin and Jake’s story. When Jake was in junior high he ran Erin out of town from a cruel incident. Now she is back in town working at the library. Jake is still smitten and will do anything for Erin. Erin just wants to avoid Jake. After 20 years she is still embarrassed by what Jakes did. When Jake decides he is going to have Erin as his he pulls out all the stops. He is trying everything to take care of her. The more time together the happier they are until one comment taken out of contexts has the ability to throw Erin back into the past hurt. Can they move on and get the happily ever after they deserve? Or will Erin never believe that Jake is not playing with her heart?
I loved these characters and they made me laugh out loud with their banter. Jake sweet but can still growl to should his true alpha side. Erin is sweet and loves that Jake can pull out her naughty side. I felt I was able to connect with the characters and the story was a great read.
I highly recommend this book, this series and this author.
