Dracula was killed in his chateau in France. But who did it? When his clan meets up in the chateau they try to find the murderer. Was it one of their own or is an outsider involved? What about the two humans captured? This was an extremely intriguing read with very plausible characters. All the twists, the setting (an old castle) and postponed finding outs (relationships among the characters) made it more like watching a highly entertaining movie than reading a novel. There even is a good shot of romance in it. Vampires have to be afraid of the sun so the title is the program of the hunting and chasing. This author absolutely knows how to compose a page turning story with all the right ingredients. The reference to Dracula lured me in to pick up the book and I didn't regret it. Highly recommended edge of the seat horror action!

I received this book from a Goodreads First Reads giveaway.

In Fear the Light, William Massa combines Bram Stoker's vampires with the classic Agatha Christie style 'whodunit' mystery. The main character is a vampire and former Texas Ranger lawman, turned by Dracula himself in the 1800's. He is called by the clan to come to Dracula's chateau in France. Why is the clan gathering? Someone has murdered Dracula!

As the clan gathers, they begin to get picked off one by one. Who is doing it? Is it one of the clan?

This was a short read and had some excellent moments. However, some of the characters fell flat and the twist, that was meant to be the surprise ending, was easy to guess by the 50% mark.

This book was not great, but it was good enough and kept me entertained. I think I will read some more from this author to see how his work progresses. I think there will be some excellent stories on the horizon from him.

Dracula has been killed, burned to death by the blistering sun and all that have been made by him are asked to attend a meeting at his home for a new leader must be chosen. Once there, the vampires vow to find out who is responsible for his demise.
There's no need to look far, for the killer is amongst them and has a warning for the rest of the vampires:
"By nightfall you'll all be dead. Fear the light!"
Every vampire comes into question. Before long the vampires are being picked-off one by one. Someone is watching them and knows the weakness's of vampires.
Suspicion falls on Vincent who used to be a vampire hunter. He was tracking Dracula himself when he was overpowered and turned into the very monsters he dedicated his life to kill. One changed, Vincent became a killing machine until he met Sasha, the love of his life, who taught him how to survive without killing humans. Since then, Vincent has kept his distance from the others who live on human blood.
But to find the killer, Vincent may need to turn to old habits if he's to live to see another night.

I found this read almost Clue-like in its scenario of a group of people, vampires in this case, all in one house looking for a killer who might be in the master bedroom ready to kill with a stake to the heart or an arrow through the chest.
The story moved fast and kept my attention and there was one part that did surprise me, in a good way. I would have liked it if I'd gotten to know more about the other vampires before their time was up. I was intrigued by the little that was told of Sebastian and his past. I felt Faust got exactly what he deserved. However, Zane got on my nerves and was the least liked character for me. His parts were overdone and I rolled my eyes a couple of times.
All in all this was an easy read that flew by. The pacing was tight and kept the story interesting up until the last page. A satisfying ending made this a worthy read. For me, this story fell along the lines of a paranormal mystery. I look forward to reading what this Indie author has in store next.

*I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*

This is a brilliant take on a Dracula novel, I have read so many Dracula and vampire books especially recently which I love; but they have become a bit samely. NOT WITH this one it has a completely unique edge to it.

Its fast paced and well written and I devoured this book in one complete sitting as I couldn't put it down. If you loved and read Agatha Christie's - And then there were none/Ten little Indians then you will love this novel but add the vampires; its just genius.
William Massa's experience and huge success in writing screen plays now extends to his first novel and wow you are right there in the middle of the action, you can almost feel the heat....I said almost... ;-)

You cant get a better plot than bringing a group of people/vampires to a mansion to let that murderer play their evil games. I love that William has crafted the brilliant legendary Dracula without actually having Dracula as the main character; not many authors could make that work, let alone work well.
William has created some believable, vivid characters that you will either love, hate or feel sorry for. Vincent the main character is my favorite and you are right there at his side as you are swept along with the Vampiric horror and gore we all love; with a dash of mystery and who done it!

I would have loved it to have been longer as I was enjoying it so much. It would make a fantastic film with its brilliant ending that I wasn't expecting; so I really hope to read more about Vincent in maybe a book 2...and 3...fingers crossed...as the Vampiric Poirot.
This well constructed book with its exciting twists and turns is perfect for both horror and murder/mystery fans, plus those wanting something different to the normal vamp genre.

Grab this book now while on special offer you wont regret it.

Who killed Dracula? That is the question that his clan have been brought to his Paris estate to discuss and investigate. With little time to talk before the sun comes up, they agree to meet when darkness falls to start investigating. When the others are awoken to a death scream just hours later, they realise that Dracula's killer is inside the house and the sun cuts off any chance of escape. Now they must solve the mystery and outwit the killer by staying alive until dark...

I really enjoyed this book and devoured it in one night. It gets straight into the story as we follow Vincent who refuses to feed on humans or have anything to do with the clan, being forced to join the others in Paris. They are all children of Dracula, turned through the ages, with different views on what their Master was. Is it one of them who killed Dracula or is there another unknown enemy hiding in the castle? It's like one of those old murder mysteries you see on Sunday TV where the suspects all gather and point the finger at each other. Then the killer starts to take them out one by one, using their vampire weaknesses against them.

I liked seeing the vampires vulnerable and scared, trapped inside by the sun and not knowing who to trust. These are killers at the top of the food chain who are used to hunting and now THEY are the weak prey being hunted. They cannot go into the sun and are trapped in the castle with an enemy who seems to anticipate their every move. The author had me thinking about everything that was said or done, trying to find that clue as to who was the killer. It was fun! To start with I had two suspects in mind but they died quickly so that ended that! But I did pick up on a couple of clues and guessed who was responsible by just after halfway through the book. That was very satisfying!

I liked the clever ways that each vampire met their death, just like a good horror film. There was enough tension as they try to find a way to escape the castle and evade the traps set for them. I also felt as if I was rooting for a couple of the vampires to escape but hoping others would die, based on the characters that I liked. I also liked the addition of the two human hostages being held by the vampires as their story and involvement was intriguing!

There were twists and turns and the book moved along at a fast pace which I liked. There is no slowing of the action from the minute they arrive at the castle and something is always happening. It was a good thriller that non horror fans can enjoy as it is not graphic in the death scenes for the most part. I would certainly read more by this author in the future.

Proteges of Dracula descend to his chateau in France to try to solve the mystery of who killed their master. Also, in play is who will be the next leader. The various players who were turned vampire through the centuries look for revenge only to find that they are also on the list of the killer. The pacing is brisk as the story takes place over a 24 hour period (hence, the title Fear the Light). They need to find the murderer before the next sunrise.

It is hard to find a vampire tale that doesn't focus on some sort of teenage love story. This one focuses on being a good suspense novel and a great mystery. I enjoyed the twists and turns and did not know who the killer was until the end. A human couple on vacation end up in the chateau which added a moral dilemma to the main character and made him appear to be the prime suspect.

The various vampires that Dracula turned had interesting back stories. A brief explanation told how over different centuries and eras, Dracula choose these victims. Others have complained they wanted more back story on the characters. There are eight vampires in the chateau and I believe that would have bogged down the story's quick pace. The momentum of this book allowed me to finish in brisk time and I look forward to reading another one of William Massa's books.

A fun twist on a classic trope. Fans of 'people trapped together in a scary place and they start dropping like flies' genre be satisfied by a good mystery, and fun characters. That said:

Is some of the writing hammy? Yes. (My dear beloved Vincent, love of my life).

Are omniscient POV ominous statements over-used? Yes. (It would be a long day, Vincent thought. He had no idea how prophetic those words would turn out to be).

Do ellipses always spoil what should be a surprising moment? Yes (His mind drifted into a peaceful slumber when...)

Does the POV switch between the heads of different characters, paragraphs at a time, without scene breaks? Yes.

Is the formatting perfect? No. Saw at least one spot where italics spilled over into the first letter of the next word.

BUT...would still recommend it, especially to someone who enjoys this trope and similar fare (Then There Were None, Harper's Island, Mind Hunters, Clue etc...)

I wish GoodReads gave half stars, because this book deserves a 3.5. It was a fun, albeit quite predictable read that kept me entertained for a few evenings. Part of the problem with constructing a great whodunnit is that we've all seen so many movies and read so many stories, that usually it's quite obvious from very early on who is responsible for the heinous crime; this book was unfortunately no different. However, it did have one really awesome twist, which I didn't see coming, and thoroughly enjoyed how it played out. I noticed after reading the book that the author has a background writing screenplays, and while reading the book I frequently thought that this story would make a pretty cool movie. It reminded me a lot of House on Haunted Hill.
I've got another William Massa book on my Kindle that I'm looking forward to reading soon.

Okay so this is the second Massa book I've read so far and so far he is two for two. I really enjoyed this book. I enjoyed it so much I read it in a day. He has a nice cross section of society in the form of Dracula's vampire children. The story is well thought out, fast paced, and action packed. I feel like he did a better job in this novel helping us start to feel for the characters than in Gargoyle Knight. My one complaint as with previous novels is that it is WAY TO SHORT. I would have liked to see this exact novel played out but on a global scale. I feel like Massa needs to start working on 500+ page novels asap. You can tell by his other works that he's got what it takes. Keep em coming sir!

This is how you do a vampire thriller! A great cast of characters, each with their own background & characteristics to draw you in to each of their own stories, all drawn together by one common theme: their maker. Oh, by the way, their maker is murdered! None of the maker's children seem to like each other, but united in his death, they congregate at the maker's castle to solve the murder. Is the murderer one of their own? Or is the murderer someone who has studied vampires for so long they know all of their secrets? You'll have to read to find out! Excellent, excellent ready!

I want a print copy of this book for my shelves at home. I really enjoyed the whole whodunnit complex mystery built on top of the thoroughly developed characters with such detailed back stories. Fear the Light is a great story that really encompasses Massa's talent for writing really great stories full of excellent detail and depth. I always love me some Dracula and this story puts a whole new spin that hasn't been explored before. Fear the Light is an absolute winner.

I really did enjoy this book. The plot was interesting. I liked hearing the story from multiple points of view. However, the punctuation was a little too much for me. I found a few typos, which us fine. What is not fine is the over use of exclamation points. The novel was intriguing, but please rely more on your words than your exclamation points.

While a lot of the vampire fiction out today is more urban fantasy than Dracula slays, There are still some original stories being told. This happens to be one of them. It's actually a hybrid of a vampire story mixed with a murder mystery, and it will keep you guessing through to the end.

When Dracula awakens to find himself just before sunrise outside staked to a cross with Silver stakes, he realizes his very long unlife is about to end in pain and misery. When his eight progeny come together to determine the new leader of the clan, things definitely don't go as expected. The diverse group, including a renaissance era knight, a 40's movie starlet, an 1800's era Texas Ranger, a teen street thief from the Victorian era and a 70's Hells Angel. AS the group bickers amongst themselves, one by one they are being killed in ever increasingly ingenious ways. Trapped in Dracula's French Chateau, The dwindling survivor's must find a way to either escape or catch the killer before they are all killed. This becomes even more difficult when hired mercenaries arrive at the chateau, fully trained and prepared to kill vampires. When the last vampire is left standing and the villain is revealed, you realize this whole story is about the sins of the past coming back to haunt. Great way to tie off the story!

This is a shorter story, so plot was much more in the forefront than super detailed character building. That being said, you got a good handle on the personalities of the characters, their motivations and the paths they had taken to get to where the story begins. The setting is well described, the action sequences and murders are excellently laid out and executed, The mystery elements are all their too, and William Massa is excellent at building tension and suspense.

Kirby Heyborne's narration was fantastic. He has a softer narrating voice, but he has a wide range of character voices and accents, and has no trouble switching from Hell's angel to Hollywood starlet. His narrative pitch and pacing is excellent as well, and he makes you want to keep listening. He is a very talented actor, having appeared in quite a few movies, tv shows and commercials, and his audiobook work is pretty wide ranging and just excellent.

I think this is the kind of book that will appeal to fans of mysteries, vampire horror or urban fantasy. It has a little bit of everything from those genre's, and stands apart in a world of Twilight clones.

About the Book: Someone is slaying clan vampires, starting with their master, their Creator, the oldest and most powerful vampire alive, formerly, Dracula. Now his clan cowers trapped in their master’s manor in the middle of the day. It was supposed to be a peaceful paying of respects to their late Father in Darkness and someone’s ascension to power, the clan leader position. Instead an invisible force is picking them off one by one. And everyone got a motive.

My Opinion: A poor imitation of Agatha Christi mysteries, where a group of people gets trapped somewhere, and someone’s killing them all. Shallow characters whose tragic stories did help, but otherwise didn’t make them any more interesting or missed. And that godawful trope one often sees in Dracula books, but usually he’s the one getting that stick of: the best of the best can’t beat you, but here comes a rando with a butter knife and you’re done. The End.

Mmno. 2 out of 5.

Picked this up for a bit of light reading for a flight. I loved the concept and the characters - I wish we had seen more of each of them before their deaths, to be honest. But overall I thought the execution could have been better. My biggest gripe was the constantly changing POV. We were getting the POV of characters we'd never even heard of before right until the end of the book. It was a bit too disjointed for my liking. The killer was unfortunately obvious from at least halfway through so it wasn't much of a surprise when they were finally unveiled. Despite this though I did find it to be an enjoyable read. There was always that feeling of "who is going to be next?" and the deaths were pretty interesting.

The familiar elements of horror and a modern gothic setting enhance this present-day vampire story, but it’s more of a mystery and vampire soap opera than a true horror story. (And I had the mystery figured out at about 75%.) The vampires themselves are glamorized, stereotyped and not terribly scary. The writing is simple and not terribly elegant, but the plot is entertaining and it is easy to imagine this as an exciting movie.

Available on Audible. The reading by Kirby Heyborne is a bit melodramatic sometimes, which is a negative, but on the plus side, he performs the accents of the international cast of characters brilliantly.

Vampire: the prey

A clutch of vampires under attack. This tale is told from the view of 8 vampires trapped and targeted by an unknown assailant or assailants. Reminiscent of horror movies with victims being undead predators instead of hapless high schoolers, this tale is riveting from beginning to end. The characterization of all the players makes for an insightful whodunit narrative.

I wasn't expecting to like this story as much as I did. The writing style was easy to read, you got to know the characters enough to like or hate them, the pace was good - never a dull moment, the mystery was cleverly written and kept me guessing until practically the last few chapters and there were a few plot twists & turns that came as complete surprises!
Excellent book all round - highly recommended!!

it's a gore filled murder mystery with all the suspects being vampires! what's not to love?! the fact that the premise of the story centers around the death of Dracula kick-starting the entire children of the night "family gathering" was just incredible. had I started this book earlier on the first night, I would have finished it in one sitting. even found myself wondering who was behind it all while at work. that's a pretty damn good story!

do not pass this book up!!

Author is a romantic! Who'd a thunk!

Like the gargoyle books, this stand alone book reveals Mr Massa's romantic side. Not nearly as mushy as those, thankfully. I was hoping for something darker. He does dark well. I might be suffering from author overload. I will read someone else then come back for the other stand alones. X

This book was like And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie, but with vampires. It was really good! It wasn't very long, it kept my interest and I read it in a couple of days, I probably could have read it quicker, but you know, life. It was a neat twist on the murder mystery genre. I highly recommend it.

Downloaded this for free from Mr. Massa. I really enjoyed it and would love to see this character in more books. I know this is not recently written book but I am loving how it wasnt you twilight like story but more old school Vampires with a twist. I dont even mind how the main character tried to stay away from human blood. Just had that kick ass will rip your throat out if I had to feel. What I think has been missing in alot of vampire books recently. Only downfall is that it ended too soon. But overall a great read. Thanks you Mr. Massa for letring me know about the download.

Pretty good

This is a pretty good take on vampires. Usually the vampires are the feared monsters. This time they're the ones being hunted. I liked it. I even liked the main character Vincent, the Texas ranger the vampire, trying to solve the mystery of who is hunting them.

Vampire tale with a difference, this time following the murder of Dracula, his clan assemble and find themselves under attack, prey rather than predator. Good story as ever from William Massa, as the vampire's try to stay alive and survive the light.
