Kia is sixteen and pregnant. Her world crumbles as she attempts to come to terms with the life growing inside her and what she must do. Initially convinced that abortion is her only option, Kia comes to understand that for her, the answers are not always black and white. As the pregnancy progresses, Kia discovers who her real friends are and where their loyalties lie. It is through her relationship with the elderly Grace that she learns what it means to take responsibility for one's life and the joy that can come from trusting oneself. Faced with the most difficult decision of her life, Kia learns that the path to adulthood is not the easily navigable trail she once thought, but a twisting labyrinth where every turn produces a new array of choices, and where the journey is often undertaken alone.
Shelley discovered her love for children’s literature while teaching school. This inspired her to write her own books, and she is now the author of eleven novels for teens, all published by Orca Book Publishers.
Shelley lives in North Vancouver, British Columbia. When she’s not reading or writing she can be found hiking, snowshoeing, practising yoga, Zumba dancing or hanging out with the grizzly bears at the Grouse Mountain Refuge for Endangered Wildlife.
The spirit of life dances lightly among the people gather in the birthing room, teasing goosebumps to the surface of their skin, forcing fine hairs to stand at attention. It is elusive, silent and indefinable, yet they all feel its mysterious presence, its promise, as it swirls about, waiting to breathe the silent respiration of the universe into the newest member of the human family.
So I discovered that my local library actually lets you check out e-books which you can read for a specific amount of time in Adobe Digital Editions. Dancing Naked: A Novel by Shelley Hrdlitschka, was the first book I checked out and read that way. Dancing Naked is a young adult book, and one I probably wouldn’t have checked out in person, but it caught my attention and I thought it would make good lunch break reading since I likely wouldn’t get too involved in the story.
Dancing Naked is about sixteen year old Kia, who becomes pregnant after loosing her virginity with Derek, the sexy bad boy she can’t believe likes her. They even used a condom, so Kia has pretty bad luck. Following Derek’s lead Kia decides to have an abortion, but at the last minute decides to do what is best for her and keep the baby she has already formed a connection too. Throughout the novel Kia deals with the many issues facing a pregnant teen, like figuring out who her real friends are and deciding what she is going to do with the baby. It’s a twisted journey off the straight road her life was once on, but it’s all a part of the changes who make her who she is. I didn’t think I would get too involved in this book who’s storyline reminds me a lot of Lifetime movie- but I did. Kia is an extremely likable main character and since the novel is written from her perspective you really get an insight into the struggles she is going through.
Although Dancing Naked likely won’t provide even its intended audience (probably closer to Kia’s age than mine) with any earth-shattering revelations- sex leads to babies and teen pregnancy is tough- it does provide a clearly written look into a difficult and still controversial world. I, surprisingly, enjoyed the book and would recommend it specifically to teenage girls who may not be facing the same dilemmas as Kia, but can sympathize with the peer pressure she faces. Dancing Naked isn’t perfect- the “twists” are all very predictable and obviously teenage pregnancy is already a hot and much discussed topic, but it is an enjoyable and touching read about how even when life doesn’t go according to plan good things can still happen. ***
This is my favorite genre Novel. I like reading Novel books because there is a more chance that the book is going to be about teenage problems and thats what I like reading. The book Dancing Naked By:Shelley Hrdlitschka is about a girl name Kia who is 16 meets some guy name Derek and she starts going oout with her and she is noticing that she is 3 weeks late for period. She tells Derek that she thinks she is pregnant all he say is that is normal but she thinks to herself that is normal. Not only she finds out she is pregnant but she is realizing that she has the optoon for an abortion and she understands for her own good that the decisions that you make are not always good. As she having progress with her pregnancy, Kia realize that her friends are not real their lies. She has made progress that she needs to take big responsibility once you get pregnant but however, she learns not to trust nobody but herself. She faced one of her most difficult decision of her life, whether having the baby or not. Does she has the baby or has an abortion? Not telling you. What I like about this book was that is short and understandable you can be in that situation if you were them. Also, what I didnt liked about the book was that it happened too fast while reading the book. Well as you know this book is a novel so who ever likes to read this book then Im recomending you this book. I found this book in Ms.Stoddard's new books. Bye. =)
The story of sixteen-year-old Kia, whose life changes forever once she learns she is pregnant. She must confront not only her own fears but also the feelings of her parents and her friends from her Unitarian church youth group. She is talked into going for an abortion by her irresponsible boyfriend, but quickly realizes that it is something she cannot do. The story takes readers through her pregnancy, week-by-week, through third-person narrative and e-mails between Kia and her friend and youth counselor, Justin, who is (of course!) gay and 23. Throughout the book, Kia matures and struggles with the decision of whether to keep the baby or to give it up for adoption. In the end, she makes the choice that provides her child with the best options. The story is similar in scope to Marilyn Reynolds's Detour for Emmy, complete with an unsupportive boyfriend who is in denial and family members who try to be supportive.

I know it almost sounds close minded but this adoption shit drives me absolutely mad. I don't think teens should be having sex, if they can't take care of their baby. The girl in the stories talk about how it would be selfish to keep her daughter but to me, it's selfish not to. Anyone can provide for a child if they try hard enough, regardless of age. This girl just didn't want to grow up and face reality and neither did her loser ex boyfriend. Pawning off your baby on another couple might give them a chance at being parents but what exactly does it teach a teenager? That it's okay to not handle your responsibilities. It's just a joke. If you aren't prepared to get pregnant, don't have sex. These teenie-boppers are fricken nuts, this happens in real life, WAY TOO MUCH!
This book was about a 16 year old girl who lost her virginity to a guy named Derick and ended up being pregnant on her first time. When she told her boyfriend he tried making her get an abortion. When she went to the clinic to get it done Derick didnt want to go so she asked Justin her church group leADER TO GO WITH HER. she changed her mind right at the very last second. She told her parents and her parents as well told her to get an abortion but she stood her ground and said no. When derick found out she didnt get the abortion he was furiouse he was going to try to force her to get it but she jumbed out of the car. Justin was supporting her through out her pregnancy he went to her prenatal clases with her and also helped her return to the old folks nursing home there she became close friends with an old lady named Grace. HER paster set up a meeting with an adoption agent for Kia and she choose her babies parents. she did not want to give her up but she realize that no matter how much she loved her daughter she had to do what was best for her. She gave birth to her daughter and her and her daughters adopting parents named her baby together she gave Grace middle name to her daughter ecause grace had cancer and was dying. After she gave away her baby she began her healing process which not hard at all
I choose the book because I thought it was interesting because there was this girl named Kia who is 17 and pregnant and she has a boyfriend Derek who is sticking by her side throught the whole thing but she wants to put the baby for abortion but the boyfriend doesnt he wants he to keep it. So finally she has the baby but then after she has it she puts it up for adoption to these great parents who take care of the baby very well. My book is a Romance book the setting takes place at the hospital and at her house. Kia is sweet and outgoing and very energetic. The main conflict of this book is that Kia is pregnant and 17 and she has to tell her parents this news. She finally tells her parents and her parents were shocked but they helped in everry way that was possible. This book is a good book because it shows how teens who are pregnant can relate to this book and how she gets through with the pregnacey all right.
I absolutely loved this book. Several kids had the opportunity to read this book in the 10th grade but unfortunately I wasn't lucky enough. This book amazed me, I thought it would be another teen pregnancy story, but it was soooo much more. After finding out how BIG of a jerk Derek was I loved Kia and the story so much more and then her youth leader Justin stepped into the picture and I thought for sure that he was a sure thing (or a solid dude) and he was all of those things but not necessarily what Kia wanted. And then there was Grace, sweet, sweet Grace who was one of Kia's only (old) friends who encouraged her to dance naked. I could go on and on about this book because it is one of the FIRST ones to make me cry.
Dancing Naked is a book that manages to capture every stereotype surrounding teen pregnancy. Kia get's pregnant her first time, her boyfriend dumps her, and despite wanting to raise her own baby Kia finds a couple that wants to adopt. Kia works with her youth group at a senior home and meets an old women. The women shares some wisdom, and Kia uses the woman's name as a middle name for her child. The book was written well and (I think) is relatable to teen moms, but the stereotypical plot is too overpowering.
This book seems to me like a commonly expressed topic; teenage pregnancy. It's not the best book I've read, not really what I would call a page turner, either. I don't agree with the religious views expressed but there does lie a point within this that should be expressed to teenage girls. I do like the way the author expresses a 'motherly instinct' in Kia, the girl who is having a baby. I'm not finished reading this, but I'll soon find out if it's one to recommend or to just pass up.
This was an amazing book. I will commend this book mostly to those people that are interesting in learning life lessons. This this about a teenager name Kia, she is 16 and already pregnant. She is considering in aborting her child but them she decided that she would not be able to take away someone else life. If you read it you are going to be able to find out what she did with her baby.
It was an interesting story. the beginning was my favorite part because I dint like the end. This story is a good lesson for teenagers and it also make you thing about things that happen in life.
I'm not really sure what to say about this book. Initially when I first started reading this, I was surprised by how much I liked it because it is a book I'm reading for school, and I don't have high expectations for those.
I can honestly say though, that I did really enjoy this book. To me, It didn't really present new information or a new perspective on teen pregnancy, but I enjoyed it nonetheless, and since I had to answer questions for this book, it made me really think about everything our main character, Kia, was going through. But also, because I had to stop every chapter and answer questions, it made it sort of hard to connect to the characters, so I was really surprised by how emotional the last chunk of this book made me.
Epically towards the end, I really connected with all of these characters, most importantly Kia, and everything they were going through, so even though this wasn't anything new or groundbreaking, I'm really happy I read it.
Dancing Naked, by Shelley Hrdlitschka, is a book about Kia who is sixteen and gets pregnant and has to deal with it all by herself, until she meets a guy named Josh, and an old woman named Grace. Kia learns how to take responsibility for her actions and for a little life. I like this book because this book is real for some teen girls life, unlike other “teen life” books Dancing naked shows the cold hard reality of what happens in life. If you are a fan of After by Amy Efaw I think you would like this book. This genre is a realist fiction. Shelly Hrdlitschka's book that she wrote is dancing in the rain, wrote in 2016. The difficulty level, I think this book is for a 9th or 10th grader reading-wise.
For a book about teenage pregnancy, I was surprised by how realistic it was. In today's society, the idea of teenage pregnancy has become so glorified with different television shows and movies but this book portrayed it with honesty. It was one of those books that I didn't want to put down and one where I was able to put myself in the shoes of the main character. I didn't understand the choice of title for most of the book but in the last few sections, it makes perfect sense.
Very good book about a 16 year old pregnant teen who gets pregnant on her first & only time having sex. She decides to have the baby at last minute & goes through school & all her close friends stay by her. She even has a senior who is very helpful & close. The senior ends up very sick when she has the baby but goes to see her with the baby before giving her to the adoptive parents. I will for sure read it again
2.5 Stars. This book was just not it for me. Some of the characters relationships were very odd and felt pushed onto the reader. The timeline of the pregnancy got confusing (inaccurate?) and that was quite distracting for me. I can see that this book has a place maybe among teens in a school setting, but as an adult it just didn't resonate with me that much. The only thing that was impactful was the relationship between Kia and Grace.
This is a very interesting read after reading the non fiction book about biological mothers who relinquished their children to adoption (the book is called ‘Relinquished’).
I think this would be a fascinating inclusion in media portrayals of biological mothers, similar to those dissected in the book.
I really liked some aspects of the writing. Also, wanted to support a local author
I remembered reading this book in high school for a book study. I decided to read it again. It almost reminds me of the movie “Juno.” The end of the book gave me a few tears and puts teen pregnancy into perspective.
My mom got this book banned from my middle school library 15 years ago when I was in but middle of reading it. Finally got to finish it and honestly it was so worth the wait!
Dancing Naked is a unique book in it's ability to be both tremendously heartbreaking while simultaneously being wonderfully heartwarming. I originally picked up this book thinking that it would be a light read to give myself a change of pace from all of the sad books about illness that I've been reading lately. I did not expect this book to be so heart-wrenching and meaningful, but that is really the only way to explain how this book made me feel. While I have never personally experienced teenage pregnancy, I felt as though I could empathize with Kia's experiences and connect with her character due to the way in which the author details her emotions and thoughts. This story does an excellent job of enlightening readers about the ups and downs, the fears, and the moments of joy that are experienced by young mothers. While others have criticized the book for relying heavily on stereotypes, I did not perceive this to be overly negative for the outcome of the book. In fact, I perceived much of the information presented in the book to be factual. For example, Derek, the father of the baby, abandons Kia after finding out that she is pregnant. Statistically speaking, this is not a stereotype; the majority of teenage relationships dissolve during or closely following a teenage pregnancy. I also loved how this book used the character of Grace as a point of wisdom and guidance for Kia. The book is not just a sob story about a girl who screws up and gets pregnant at the age of sixteen. The story has so many layers and wonderfully demonstrates that there are lessons to be learned from all of life's experiences, both good and bad. On the surface, Kia's story might seem to be one of tragedy and loss, but if you look more closely at the messages and learning experiences in the book you might find that the overarching moral of the story is one of hope and personal growth in the face of painful experiences. To say I "enjoyed" this book would not be the right word. Dancing Naked is not an overly happy story, but it is valuable, important, and engaging. I read this book in the space of two days and I found myself unable to put it down until well into the early hours of the morning. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone who is a fan of a good book with an important message to share. Just be prepared to feel emotionally raw and shattered by the time you reach the last page. Dancing Naked is just such a wonderfully heartbreaking story. Definitely a must-read.
The plot for the most part was predictable and felt like an afterschool special, but some of the subplots, like Kia and Grace's friendship, were neat. The pregnancy storyline was a bit on the predictable side, but I like that it tried to be realistic.
Setting:
Seemed like your everyday kind of town. I did like the senior center, though.
Characters:
Kia seemed realistic for the most part. I like that she struggled with the reality of what was happening to her and also with her choices, even after she had made them. I felt really bad for her, especially near the end. I about choked up during the ceremony at the end.
I felt Justin was a very nice and supportive friend, though he seemed a little too perfect.
Grace is probably my favorite. She was cheeky and also full of wisdom. I loved the scenes with her in them.
Derek is a class A jerk, but I like that he also has some character development.
Kia's parents seemed a little unrealistic at times. But I found the scene where Kia's mother talks about to be very touching.
Relationships:
I adored the relationship between Kia and Justin, and the twist was interesting.
My favorite relationship is the friendship between Kia and Rose, though.
Although Kia's baby is barely a character, I felt the bond between her and Kia clearly.
Kia's relationship with her parents seemed underdeveloped.
Writing/Voice:
The writing isn't bad, but comes off as being dated and at times, preachy. It felt like a made-for-TV movie.
Ending:
The ending ended on a good note but also showed the reality of Kia's decision. Despite loving Grace and her wisdom, the epilogue seemed a bit silly.
Overall, I liked it. It was nice to see a teen pregnancy book explore all of the options with little bias. Adoption did seem to be strongly pushed. I'm not really a fan of coerced adoption, especially with teenagers, but it seemed realistic enough. At least Kia's reactions to her decision were shown instead of being glossed over like other stories do.
There did seem to be random subplots though, like Justin's storyline. I liked it, but it didn't really seem to fit with everything else. I feel I would have liked this better if the book had revolved mostly around Kia and Grace's interesting friendship with the pregnancy as the subplot.
Why did i choose this book? -i choose this book because it look intersecting from the back. i had pick it up earlier but i didnt read it all i just just scanning and i put it down till i read it all and i like it alot! genre? -it is true because its about pregnancy and it can happen to a 16 year old. setting? - the setting takes place at a senior home when she volenteers to help out and at home when shes having a talk with her parents and also at the hospital when shes giving birth to brenna grace her baby girl. Whose the main character? -the main character is kia a 16 year old she like a perfect older daughter which her younger sister looks up to her. she is a sweet girl who likes to help others. she likes to think of others first. Plot summary with the problem? -kia has a boyfriend who is a total jerk she gets pregnant from her first time and tell her boyfriend for help he tells her to aport the baby and they go to the clinic but she doesnt because she was getting very close to the baby. she has a journal where she wrote what it felt to have a baby for the past 40 weeks and what she feels when she tells her parents about the baby they also make her aport the baby. But kia doesnt want to. She decides to give it up for adopation. she wanted to keep the baby with justin and both of them rise the baby. But justin told kia that he couldnt because he was gay. and he had a crush on a guy name blair. that really shock me i thought they were gonna be together at the end and live happy with the baby. the problem is resoveld by kia give up the baby to the perfect parents jonna and brett. i thought this book was really good because i like how kia was very strong and didnt have an aportion. but i hated the part that her parents and derek her boyfriend didnt want the baby. but i also got upset when justin said he was gay. i wanted them to be together with the baby.

I fell so bad for kia beacause she is 16 and she is pregnet that is really young to be pregnte and derak dosent want to be with her at all and he want her to get and abortinon so he gowa but at the wnd she dosent get it cause she fell really bad cause she want to mee the little person that is in her. only one of her freinds that his name is justin know not event her parents know that she is pregnet but when she tell then about it they look at her like are you ok or what and you can tell taht her dad is not happy at all so then she tells her freinds and they dont like the idea and more beacuse it is from derke and now he is going around saying that she sleeps with all kind of guys. then she goes to som penternal classes with justin she is very shy and her parent tell her to put in adoption cause it is going to be hard to be 16 and be a sing parent so this one lady come and gives her a binder of people that want to adopt babys and she look though it and she donts want to give in adoption cause she really loves her baby now. sshe did give her baby in adoption to jenny and brett and she named her brenna. and now is able to go and party with her freinds. well i really like this book cause it is a lesson of what can happen if u get pregnet if you are so young..
