Elisabeth Young is a picture restorer with modest needs. As she works, absorbed and alone in her basement flat, she becomes haunted by the echo of mysterious footsteps and a silent figure in the shadows. When a wealthy but disfigured recluse persistently invites her to restore his remarkable collection, the offer finally proves irresistible. His luxurious residence seems to be the refuge she seeks - but too late, Elisabeth realises her error as the past and the present combine to make privacy her nemesis.
Frances Hegarty is the real name of Frances Fyfield; a criminal lawyer, an occupation on which she bases many of her novels. She divides her time between London and Deal, and has won several awards, notably the Crime Writers' Association Silver Dagger.
A really good book with a totally surprising denouement. This is Frances Fyfield under another name but not a series character. About an art restorer who "disappears," only she knows where she is and who she's with. It's all very sinister & creepy, but wonderfully deep and thoughtful, about people's needs and wants, surfaces & depths....
