About the author

Thi . Janakiraman (also known as Thi Jaa, or T. Janakiraman ) is one of the major figures of 20th century Tamil fiction. He worked as a civil servant. His writing included accounts of his travels in Japan and the Crimea.

His best-known novel is Mogamul (Thorn of Desire), in which feminine emotions are explored with a story spun around delicate feelings. His short stories such as "Langdadevi" (a lame horse) and "Mulmudi" (Crown of Thorns) follow the same style. Thi Jaa wrote about one hundred short stories and a dozen novels. Two of his novels, Amma Vandhaal and Marappasu, were translated into English as "Sins of Appu's Mother" and "Wooden Cow" respectively. In 1979, he was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award for Tamil for his short story collection Sakthi Vaidhiyam. Some of his other notable works are Malar Manjam, Uyirthen and Sembaruthi.

இந்நாவலை 2000த்திற்கு முன்னாடி ஒரு தடவை வாசித்திருக்கிறேன்..

இப்போது மீண்டும் மீள்வாசிப்பு..

அப்போது வாசித்த அதே அனுபவம்..
அதெல்லாம் ஒரு வரம்தான்..

For fans of Thi.Ja the revolutionary writer who writes strong women, this book is a deviation. This book also has 3 strong women, but the drama is around one family man’s life.


Sattanathan is the last born brother who wants to study while the middle brother is running a store. His teacher’s daughter with whom there is a hint of mutual attraction, gets married to his brother and becomes his Anni. The first born brother is henpicked and his wife is someone who spews venom and keeps criticising.


When the middle brother dies, Sattanathan shoulders the responsibility of the entire family and tries to be the model moral individual. He marries Bhuvana, a girl who wears hibiscus in her hair, and as an ideal partner she fulfills his life and guides him through moral and financial difficulties.


The story progress on and on till his almost 60th birthday with the relationship between the couples being the beacon of hope in a burdened household.  The book does a continuous comparison between the three women of the household and how Sattanathan is under the force.


While realistic, the book was much more fit for the time it came in (a safe bet) in comparison to his books like Mogamul and Amma vanthal.


A very special callout to the audiobook version narrated by Deepika Arun. There are so many characters including Interesting side characters like Kishtamma. Each of them has been given an unique voice and mannerisms that at any given point of time, you know which character is speaking. Amazing narration!

🔆தன் அண்ணனுக்கு தெரியாமல் , களஞ்சியத்திற்கும் சுவற்றிக்கும் நடுவில் இருக்கும் இடத்தில் , மறைந்து உட்கார்ந்துக் கொண்டு சட்ட நாதன் படித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தான் . அவனின் இளைய அண்ணன் முத்துச்சாமி, தன் தம்பி தன்னுடன் கடையில் வந்து உதவியாக இருக்கு வேண்டும் என்று ஆசை .

🔆சட்டமோ சதா நேரமும் புத்தகமும் கையுமாக உட்கார்ந்து தன் அண்ணனின் வசவு சொல்லுக்கு ஆளாகிறான் .

🔆இந்தச் சுழலில் , முத்துச்சாமி ஒரு நாள் நோய்வாய்ப்பட்டு இறந்து விடுகிறார். அதே நேரம் அவன் பெரிய அண்ணன், வியாபரத்தில் நஷ்டம் அடையவே , குடும்ப பொறுப்பு முழுவதும் அவன் தலையில் விழுகிறது .

🔆அவன் அண்ணன் இறக்கும் முன் , அவனுக்கு ஒரு பெண்ணைப் பார்த்து வைத்திருந்தான் . அதே பெண்ணுடன் அவனுக்கு திருமணம் நடந்தது . ஒன்று அல்ல இரண்டு அல்ல , பதினைந்து வருடங்கள் , இந்தக் குடும்பத்தை தாங்கிக்கொண்டு நிற்கிற நங்கூரமாகிப் போனான் சட்ட நாதன் .

🔆தன் இரண்டு அண்ணனின் பிள்ளைகளுக்கும் தன் பிள்ளைகளுக்கும் திருமணம் செய்து வைத்து , வியாபாரத்தை எப்படி நடத்தினான், இதுவே செம்பருத்தியின் பக்கங்கள் .

🔆சுதந்திர போராட்ட காலகட்டத்தில் , நடந்த கதையாக கூறப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. ஆங்காங்கே அதன் செயல்பாடுகளும் தாக்கங்களும் தெரிகிறது .

நவரசா என்ற திரைப்படத்தில் தி.ஜானகிராமன் அவர்கள் எழுதிய பாயசம் என்ற சிறுகதை சித்தரிக்கப் பட்டிருந்தது. அந்த கதை மிகவும் பிடித்துப் போக அவரின் வேறு கதைகளை படிக்க வேண்டும் என்ற அவா எழுந்தது, அதனின் தொடர்ச்சியாக செம்பருத்தி படிக்கலானேன்.
கதை சுருக்கம்: சட்டநாதன் என்பவரின் வாழ்க்கை வரலாறு மூன்று காலக் கட்டங்களில் - அவரது இளமை பருவம், middle-age எனப்படும் நடுத்தர வயது, மற்றும் அவரது முதுமை காலத்தில் அவர் வாழ்க்கையில் நடக்கும் சம்பவங்கள், மற்றும் அவர் சந்திக்கும் சவால்கள்.
இந்த கதையை கிட்ட தட்ட 500 பக்கங்களுக்கு மேல் எழுதியிருந்தார். கதையின் ஓட்டம் முழுவதும் சட்டநாதனின் பார்வையிலேயே நகர்கிறது. Family -drama என்றாலும் அலுப்புத் தட்டாமல் 500 பக்கங்கள் எழுதியதே அவரது முதல் வெற்றி.
நான் பெரும்பாலும் தமிழில் சரித்திர புதினங்கள் மட்டுமே படித்திருந்தேன் . என்னால் இப்படி ஒரு குடும்ப கதையை இவ்வளவு சுவாரசியமாக படிக்க முடிந்ததே என்று வியப்பாக இருந்தது. அதற்கு காரணம், ஜானகிராமனின் இயல்பான கதை சொல்லும் திறன். காதல், காமம், துக்கம், சந்தோஷம், விரக்தி, ஆன்மீகம் என்று எல்லா அம்சங்களும் அளவாக கலந்திருந்தது. படிக்கப் படிக்க ஆசையாக இருந்ததே தவிர, எந்த ஒரு இடத்திலும் ஒரு வெறுப்போ, திகைப்போ , ஏமாற்றமோ இல்லை. அந்த கதை இந்திய சுதந்திர போராட்டத்திற்கு முன்னாள் நடந்தது போல அமைத்தமையால், சில சுவாரசியமான சரித்திர சம்பவங்களையும் கதையில் சேர்த்திருந்தார். அந்த காலத்தில் மக்கள் வாழ்த்த வீடு, வாழ்க்கை முறை, வேலை என்று படிக்கும் போது மிகவும் ஆர்வமாக இருந்தது. அந்த காட்சிகள் அப்படியே கண்முன் வந்து சென்றது.

ஆண் என்றால் பல பெண்களுடன் தொடர்பு வைத்திருக்கலாம், அனால் ஒரு பெண் என்றால் ஒருவனை தவிர வேறு ஒருவனை மனதில் கூட நினைக்கக் கூடாது என்பது போல பல எழுத்தாளர்கள் அந்த காலத்தில் எழுதியதுண்டு. ஆனால் ஜானகிராமன் இக்கதையில் stereotype என்று சொல்லப்படும் கருத்துக்களையோ, கதாப்பாத்திரங்களையோ அடியோடு ஒழித்திருந்தார். விதவையான சின்ன அண்ணி சட்டநாதனின் மீது வைத்திருந்த ஆசை , சட்டநாதனின் மனைவி அவர் மீது வைத்திருந்த நம்பிக்கை இவை இரண்டு தான் இக்கதையின் ஆணிவேர். எத்தனை உறவுகள், எத்தனை உணர்ச்சிகள், எவ்வளவு கலப்படமில்லா சிந்தனை... ஜானகிராமனின் எழுத்து திறமைக்கு நான் ரசிகை என்றே கூற வேண்டும்.

ஒவ்வொரு சமயம் என் குடும்பத்தில் ஏற்படும் சிரமங்களை சந்திக்கும் பொழுது கூட, சட்டநாதனின் மனைவி புவனாவைப் போல எனக்கு பொறுமையைக் கொடு என்று இறைவனிடம் வேண்டும் அளவிற்கு இக்கதை என்னுள் ஆழப் பதிந்து விட்டது. ஒரு சின்ன ஏமாற்றம் தான் கதையை படிக்கும் போது வருகிறது , சட்டநாதனின் பார்வையிலேயே கதை நகருவதால், புவனா, மற்றும் சின்ன அண்ணி குஞ்சம்மாவின் எண்ண அலைகளை பற்றி அறிய முடியவில்லை. அவர்கள் அந்த அடுக்களையில் என்ன தான் பேசிக் கொண்டிருப்பார்கள்? எவ்வளவு பெரிய குடும்பம், எத்தனை வேலைகள், எத்தனை குழந்தைகள்...... அவர்கள் எப்படி இவ்வளவு வேலைகளை சமாளித்தார்கள் என்று கற்பனை செய்யும்போதே பிரமிப்பாக உள்ளது. அவர்களின் தோழியாக செம்பருத்தி கதையில் இடம் பெற மனம் ஏங்குகிறது.

தொடர்ச்சியாக படித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கும் போது வெயில் நாளின் உச்சி மேகமாய் எங்கிருந்தோ ஒரு புத்தகம் சட்டென்று நெஞ்சின் ஒரு கிளையில் ஊஞ்சல் கட்டிக் கொள்ளும். வெறும் கதையாக மட்டும் இல்லாமல் மனதின் உறைந்திருந்த உணர்வுகளின் நாதமாய் இன்னமும் மிச்சமிருக்கும் சில மெல்லிய உணர்வுகளை தொட்டெலுப்பிவிட்டு செல்லும்.

'மோக முள்' அது போன்றதொரு கதை. அதை படித்த வேகத்தில் 'அம்மா வந்தாள்', 'உயிர் தேன்' என வரிசையாக தி.ஜாவை தேடி படித்ததுண்டு. ஆனால் 'மோக முள்'ளின் வலியை பின் வந்த எதுவும் கொடுக்கவில்லை. அதே நினைவோடுதான் 'செம்பருத்தி'யை ஆரம்பித்தேன்.

1930-40களின் தஞ்சை மாவட்ட கிராமம் ஆனாலும் மனிதர்கள் எல்லா இடங்களிலும் எல்லா காலங்களிலும் அப்படியேதானே இருக்கிறார்கள். மூன்று சகோதரர்கள். கால ஓட்டத்தில் அவர்கள் வாழ்வின் மாற்றங்கள் என்றும் சொல்லலாம். ஒரு மனிதனின் வாழ்வின் காதல்களின் கதையாகவும் கொள்ளலாம். அனால் என்னை பொறுத்தவரை மனிதர்களின் வீழ்ச்சியும் எழுதலுமாகவே பார்க்க முடிந்தது.

சட்டநாதனின் 27, 42 மற்றும் 60 வயதினில் நடக்கும் நிகழ்வுகள் மூன்று பாகங்களாக விரிகிறது. சட்டநாதனின் கதையாக தெரிந்தாலும் குஞ்சம்மாள், புவனா மற்றும் பெரிய அண்ணி என மூன்று பெண்களும் மட்டுமே கதையின் ஆணி வேராக நடத்துகிறார்கள். அவர்களின் எதிர்பார்ப்புகள், அந்த எதிர்பார்ப்புகள் கொண்டு வரும் ஏமாற்றங்கள் மட்டுமே கதையாக இருக்கிறது. ஒரு விதத்தில் நம் எல்லோரின் கதையுமே அதுதானே. நம் வாழ்வே இந்த முரண்பாடுகளின் கூடாகத்தனே செல்கிறது.

முரண்பாடு என்பது வெறும் ஆசைக்கும் நிராசைக்கும் மட்டும் நிகழ்வதில்லை. மனதின் இச்சைகளுக்கும் சமூகத்தின் கட்டுகளுக்குமான முரண்பாடுகளும் நம்மை அலைக்களிக்கிறது. ஆணுக்கும் பெண்ணுக்குமான இந்த போராட்டமே இன்றும் வாழ்வை வாழ வைக்கிறது.

'செம்பருத்தி' இந்த மன விகாரங்களையும் அவற்றுடன்னான போராட்டங்களையும் பேசுகிறது. எல்லோரும் கொஞ்சம் நல்லவர்களாகவும், கொஞ்சம் மன விகாரங்களுடனும் வலம் வருகின்றனர். வீட்டிருக்குல்லேயே இருப்பதாய் தோன்றும் பெண்கள் எல்லோரையும் ஆட்டுவிக்கிறார்கள்.

'மோக முள்'ளின் யமுனாவை போன்று மனதை உருக்கும் பெண் பாத்திரங்கள் பல படித்ததில்லை. 'செம்பருத்தி'யில் புவனா மனதை உருக்காவிடினும் ஒரு ஆதர்ச பெண்ணாக வலம் வருகிறாள். புவனாவை படிக்கும் போதெல்லாம் என் மனைவியை நினைவு படுத்தாமலில்லை. அதுவே நான் எவ்வளவு அதிர்ஷ்டக்காரன் என்றும் நினைவு படுத்திக் கொண்டே இருந்தது. புவனாவின் காதலே சட்டநாதனின் வாழ்க்கையாகிறது.

இது நாவல் ஆக எழுத படவில்லை தொடர் கதை யாக வந்தது.. அதன் தாக்கம் நன்றாக தெரிகிறது... கதை மாந்தர்கள் தொடர்பு பாதிலியே கழட்டி விட பட்டி இருக்கிறது. சின்ன அண்ணி ய கதை படுத்தியது ... பெரிய அண்ணி பெயர் கடைசி வரை சொல்ல படாதது.. வயலகள் குடியனர்வர்களுக்கு போச்சா கடை போன மாதிரி. நெறய கேள்விகள்...சட்ட நாதனனை உயர்வாக எண்ண தொணவில்லை .. சுய நலமியாக தான் பாக்கிறேன்

Translation could have been better.

A melodramatic saga in Sattanathan Pillai's household set in Thanjavur. A full-on matrimonial drama among the 3 brothers and their spouses.

Plenty of mansplaining and lamenting. The ever-Indian-sacrificial sounding mothers and wives. The gradual unbecoming of the women after suffering from emotional and social neglect. They were hardly appreciated.

Nevertheless, they continued their covert resistance to have some form of agency as a domestic partner. Truth is, they were seen just as part and parcel of the furniture. The men were indifferent and insensitive to their women's mental, emotional, and physical balances.

It's a good story to read and learn how not to live a marital life if you choose respect, love, and comfort.

3/5 for me. I'm quite far removed from such family drama. Still, this is a good story to read. Apparently, this is a Tamil cult classic.

Prof P Balaswamy's translation of T Janakiraman's some 400+ pages- long novel, "Sembaruthi"/ "The Crimson Hibiscus" takes one through the house of Sattanaathan in Sembanur, the nearby streets and fields and the Thanjavur city. It dwells into the complexities of human relationships in general and man- woman relationships in particular. Alongside the personal story of Sathanaathan, there are tightly woven thin narratives of war, and a newly independent nation also. What interests me the most in this novel is the emotional labour that the central characters, Sathanaathan and Bhuvana put in to live an ethically right life by frequently questioning and criticising their views and judgments. Though I am not supposed to comment on the translation as I haven’t explored the original Tamil work, I would say that the English translation has brought in the cultural essence of a Tamil family of the early twentieth century by retaining the Tamil words of the cultural artefacts and narrating the everyday rituals and festivals in and around the family. For instance, I have only heard about the Thanjavur dolls, but to read about it in the context of a Navarathiri festival was a delight. Even the timeline follows the months from the Tamil calendar, Aavani, Markhazhi and the cultural beliefs- practices around these months.
The first page of the novel itself caught my interest particularly because of its visual quality.
Sharing a few lines from the opening of the novel:
“The kalanjiam or granary stood close to the wall but not close enough to touch it. There was a narrow space, enough for a person to stand between the kalanjiam and the wall. With a little care, one could walk through it without grazing one’s shoulders. Sathanaathan was not standing. He was sitting on the floor reading under the kerosene lamp perched on the frame of the kalanjiam. The yellow- white flame gave out smoke that emerged with the darkness. Now and then, the harsh smell of the kerosene fumes irritates him. If the flame were lowered, it would burn without smoke, but the light would be too dim for reading.”
These sensory details are enough to transport a reader to Sattanaathan’s world, it seems.
