Rogue X Ara #4

The Last One Standing

Rate this book
The crown was found. The queen was taken. And the king is out for blood.

With the Obsidian Crown finally in their grasp, Rogue and Ara were stronger than ever. Peace felt within reach—for their family and the kingdoms.

But then, Adonis struck.

Now, Ara is a captive, her power suppressed and her connection with Rogue severed. Across the realm, Rogue scours the land, fury burning through his veins, wings destroyed, and desperation mounting with every passing day.

Their bond is powerful. Their love, unbreakable.

But neither may be enough.

Because once they reunite, nothing is as it was. What awaits them is darker than twisted truths, ancient weapons, and a prophecy buried deep in Ravaryn’s history.

And Adonis? He doesn’t just want the throne.

To stop him, Rogue and Ara must unravel his true intentions—and they must do it now.

The clock is ticking, and the final war has already begun.

I came across this series on bookbub and instantly fell into the world of Ara and Rogue. I could not get enough and have been waiting for their ending. I was lucky enough to have been given an ARC!!!! My first one and for one of my favorite series!

This book takes you through an intense time for both Ara and Rogue. J.D Linton captured perfectly what it’s like dealing with trauma and flashbacks. All the characters in this book have been through so much it really takes you through an emotional whirlwind as a reader.

I don’t want to write any spoilers so I’d like to thank J.D Linton for writing this series and putting everything she had into it. Absolutely amazing!

J.D.'s Rogue x Ara series was one of my very first ventures into the romantasy genre, and because of that, Ara and Rogue have carved a permanent place in my heart & soul. We've been waiting for their story to get closure, and trust me, the wait was so worth it.

It was also quite bittersweet, knowing this was where we part ways with these characters, but we left them happy, safe, and ready to tackle whatever life might throw their way. And that is the kind of ending that stays with you.

The Last One Standing was the epic finale we needed. It was packed with romance and action, battle scenes and heart-wrenching moments. I cried, no, I sobbed uncontrollably, shedding tears of sorrow and joy. So many secrets were revealed, so many truths brought to light, and yet everything fell into place in the most perfect, gut-wrenching way.

The flashbacks some characters experienced were the perfect touch, albeit soul-crushing. I never found them difficult to follow, even though they felt so real that I fully understood why the characters had trouble distinguishing between what was real and what wasn't. They added the depth and emotional weight we needed.

I would never spoil the plot for you, because you deserve to feel as immersed as I was while reading The Last One Standing, raw and unfiltered. But let me tell you only this—you will be surprised. And amazed. And crushed. And utterly sad. And utterly happy. You will embrace the pain, live through it, and come out on the other side stronger than before, calmer, simply at peace and whole.

The epilogue was lovely, and it gave me a glimpse into the future I've always wanted Rogue & Ara to have—simply existing and living.

Thank you, J.D., for allowing me to accompany you on this journey. Thank you for allowing me to get to know and love these characters, to root for them, cry for them, and see them reach the life they've been dreaming of.

This book was absolutely stunning. This conclusion to Rogue and Ara’s story was fought for and that made it even more beautiful.
JD Linton captured so well what it’s like to have extreme trauma and flashbacks and the difficult journey of navigating through it and healing from it.
I absolutely loved Rogue in this book. How he never gave up. And I will of course, forever love Ara too! Ara inspires me endlessly.

I don’t want to say much because I don’t want to spoil anything but THANK YOU so much to JD Linton for choosing me to be an ARC reader for this book! I’ve been a fan of this series ever since The Last Storm was released and I can’t believe it’s now complete. This is one of my Roman Empire series, the kind of series that leaves a mark on your soul. This series is a MUST READ for fantasy/Romantasy fans!

Plot: 4/5 • Smut: 2.5/5 —————> The final installment. This was a whopper. A big ol 700 something pages. But it was well worth it in the end.

A lot of this one was two things: Ara surviving being kidnapped. And then trying to find the missing blade they needed to kill. The actual war scene went by rather quickly. which I was kind of okay with because I wanted my HEA.

A little piece of me was so sad when Ara couldn’t remember why her feelings for Rogue were there. When Adonis told her to forget Rogue I wasn’t surprised. What did surprise me was how she actually got her memory back. That part was a little weird. Blurry if you will.

We do get our HEA, like I said. The king and queen take their throne. Pop out a couple of fae and rule their kingdom. I really enjoyed the ending.

It felt so good to get a closure on this series! It was a favorite for a long time. If you loved the first books, definitely do a re-read before diving into this last one.
I felt like the story answered a lot of questions from the beginning of the series and wrapped up neatly. The characters got their HEA and there was a glimpse of their future at the end that made my heart happy.
The reason I knocked it down a star is because sometimes the details got muddy and the magic made me question things, but it didn’t take away enough for me to lose the story or the plot.

Holy. Goddess! This was such a beautiful ending to Rogue & Ara’s story! This is by far one of my favorite series of all time! The world building, the storyline, the creatures & magic & the FAMILY! I’m so grateful to JD for allowing me to be apart of this ARC team since The First Loss. This story means so much to me & truly is one of my absolute favorites. If you haven’t started this series, you need to!

I have been absolutely in love with this series. So much that I actually went back and read the first 3 before this release. That is why I am giving it 3 stars.

I made it about 25% of the book before DNFing (which I usually don't do) - honestly I am probably going to go back in a week or so and give it another shot.

Without spoilers I will just say that the writing seemed extremely clunky and confusing. Then adding in editional character pov chapters (instead of the dual POV from the rest of the series) also kind of threw me off because I'd finally get into the action and then we would be across the map doing something else somewhere completely different.

I may change my review in the future but honestly I wanted to love this book so much. I still love Rogue and Ara! And I adore the world JD Linton has created.

If you’re looking for a fantasy series that will absolutely wreck you—in the best way possible—Rogue and Ara is it. And the final book, The Last One Standing, delivers everything you could hope for in a finale: emotional depth, fierce battles, tender romance, and revelations that will leave you breathless.

JD Linton’s world-building is stunning, but it’s the characters that truly shine. Rogue and Ara feel real, raw, and unforgettable. Their journey through trauma, healing, and love is portrayed with such honesty that you’ll find pieces of yourself in their story. The magic system is fresh and imaginative, and the found family dynamic? It’ll break your heart and then stitch it back together.

What really stood out to me were the flashbacks—so vivid and emotionally charged that you feel like you’re living them alongside the characters. They add layers of complexity and make the story hit even harder.

You won’t just read this book—you’ll survive it. You’ll be wrecked and rebuilt. You’ll cry for what’s lost and smile for what remains. This series doesn’t just tug at your emotions—it wrings them out. The emotional depth, the secrets unearthed, the raw vulnerability of each character… It's a journey that leaves you shattered and whole all at once.

The final installment delivers everything: sweeping romance, fierce battles, devastating truths, and moments so tender they’ll stay with you long after the last page.

The epilogue? Quiet, tender, and everything Rogue and Ara deserved. It’s not grand—it’s real. A glimpse of peace after chaos. A breath after the storm.

If you want a series that makes you feel deeply, think differently, and leaves you changed by the end, this is the one. Rogue will inspire you with his strength, and Ara—Ara will stay with you long after the last page. She’s the kind of character who makes you want to be braver.

Read this series. Let it wreck you. Let it heal you. The Last One Standing is the perfect, heart-wrenching, unforgettable goodbye.

The final chapter in the story of Rogue x Ara.
This story was a great way to wrap up the story of Vaelor & Elora, Rogue & Ara and all the other characters we have seen throughout the series. We are even introduced to new characters. This book will take you to new lands with more mythical creatures and people. Family dynamics is such a vital role in this book. With twists to the story that keep you on your seat, while still playing at the emotional heart strings of love, loss and found family.

*** to prevent from sharing spoilers, I am keeping this more vague.
While I devoured the first three books in this series, I had to take my time with this. There are some parts within the story that it took me a minute to realize the POV was "remembering" a scene. The first few times this occurred, it took me a minute of going back and seeing if I missed something. If you feel that way, PLEASE stay with it. Once you get use to her slight change in story telling you will be hooked again, and unable to put it down.

This story is so much more than just the love story of Rogue & Ara. You have Vaelor & Elora's story from the third book that plays into this. The people they touched and were part of that story are very active and you gain even more insight into them with this final chapter. Nothing is stronger than love and trying to save those that you love at all costs.

Let’s talk about ✨𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙇𝙖𝙨𝙩 𝙊𝙣𝙚 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜✨ because I have A LOT to say…

Any time you knowingly pick up the last book in a fantasy series, you expect it to be B͟I͟G͟. It has to be larger-than-life, raw, and complete…and it’s daunting as a reader to pick up the last book and know this is it. And J.D. Linton understood the assignment with 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙇𝙖𝙨𝙩 𝙊𝙣𝙚 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜, the final book in the 𝘙𝘰𝘨𝘶𝘦 𝘹 𝘈𝘳𝘢 series.

This book is chaotic and a bit disorienting at first, but in the BEST possible way. There’s a fine line between intentional disorientation to serve the story and just confusion.

✨I didn’t feel like I was 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 a story; I was 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘨 it. ✨

I have never had so many emotions while reading before. The tears I shed for this book! And not just tears of sadness. Tears of pain, heartache, joy. 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙇𝙖𝙨𝙩 𝙊𝙣𝙚 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 rips into your heart and embeds itself there.

While there are twists and turns that will leave you gasping, one thing is clear from the very beginning: Rogue and Ara get their happily ever after. And believe you me, I clung to that golden thread all while reading. And I realized that promise fed the hope I had during the story, bled into the hope the characters had to persevere. More than that, it charged the emotional connection within the pages.

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙇𝙖𝙨𝙩 𝙊𝙣𝙚 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 is about the journey, not the destination. It’s about hope in the face of insurmountable darkness. It’s about the greatest loss…and the greatest love.

Review:

This is the fourth and final book in the Rogue and Ara series. From the beginning, the world building, character development, and storyline were top-notch and well thought out! The magic system was original and creative. The found family was so heartwarming and at the same time devastating. This entire series will have you in a choke-hold and even after you finish it won’t let go! The emotions, feelings, and secrets that this series takes you on will leave you in tears both happy and sad!

This final book did not disappoint! We see the gang get ready to take Adonis down-finally! We follow Rogue and Ara on their journey through trauma, trials, and secrets to finally get their happy ending!

I have so much more I want to say, but I’m afraid to say too much. This entire series, especially this last book, is one that needs to be experienced rather than read about in a review. This book truly gives the best and most fitting end for Rogue and Ara!

If you like fated mates, found family, enemies-to-lovers, touch her and die vibes, and spice; this is the series for you!

The Last One Standing is a solid 5 starts!
The entire Rogue and Ara Series is a solid 7 stars!

Side note: please read The First Loss BEFORE reading The Last One Standing! The First Loss needs to be read third even though it is a prequel.

Thank you JD Linton for the ARC!

I was fortunate enough to receive and ARC copy of this and I am so happy I did! This series has been a god tier for me.
This is the final book in the series and I can't believe it is over. This has been such a roller coster riding and I had so much fun being apart of this world. Characters are beautifully written and the world itself was incredible. JD Linton outdid herself with this one.
I did have to put this down a few times because it is such a longer book than the other three. My attention span only goes so far.
This is probably, at least for me, the most emotional of 4 books. I cried a lot because of what Rouge and Ara have to go through. It was just heart breaking and then that much better when things did get better. There were so many more twisted than I was expecting and it honestly worked well. I was happy to see characters we didn't see in book 1 and 2 and more surprises on who some character truly were. I am not going to tell you, you have to go read it on your own!
Thank you JD Linton for the ARC copy. You have no idea what that meant to receive it. I never thought that paying your books after seeing a video of you on TikTok stating your preorders had been dropped, that I would fall completely in love with this series. They have lived in my heart and soul ever since. I cannot wait to see what come next in a new series.

SPOILERS INCLUDED!

I truly wasn’t sure what I expected when reading this book. When The Last Draig ended and we were left on that cliff hanger, there was no definitive motive but I truly just assumed the worst of Adonis. While his reasonings were not anywhere close to okay, part of me understood his wanting to bring back Vaelor and right his wrong. I DEFINITELY did not think it was going to succeed though! When I say I am so happy that Ana and Rogue were able to get their happy ever after, I was truly over the moon. But to see Vaelor and Elora also get there’s filled me with such happiness, especially knowing what she went through in the First Loss.

I think one of my favorite things about this book was the way the beginning was written. It came across as somewhat muddled and confusing. Whether that was intentional or not, I feel like it really put you in the mindset of Ana as she was tortured by Adonis. She couldn’t tell what was real and what wasn’t. What was Adonis playing with her head and what was trauma. Whether JD Linton intentionally wrote it that way or not, it really resonated with me as a reader.

Overall, I LOVED this book. I can’t wait to go back and reread it a few times to see what clues I missed along the way that lead to that final battle with Adonis. His motives, their plan, their success.

I was so thrilled to get the ARC of this and to finally read the finale of this amazing series!

I wish I had had the energy and time to read this in a short time, but life happens. On the other hand, being able to read and savor this book allowed me to go through the many emotions I experienced while reading Ara and Rogue’s story.

I was extremely frustrated with the first half of this book, especially where the ending of the 2nd book left all the characters in such awful positions. Then reading The First Loss wrenched out my heart even more… So to read this book and interact with ALL those characters was amazing, emotional, and finally satisfying, even though they had to go through so much…

I won’t spoil anything, but I will say I was surprised by some things in the ending, which is hard to do. I tend to predict most things but this book had some twists that were superb. I will miss Ara and Rogue, as both characters have been amazing to read. I love their story! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ THIS SERIES IS A MUST READ!!

J.D., what did you do to me? I knew, being the final book, I was in for some things. What I didn't know was that these twists came at you like a sledgehammer. I had to reread parts to fully grasp the WTF moments I was exposed to. It was overwhelming and freaking exciting all at once. I can't even really talk about the book without spoiling.

The constant whiplash of plots twists kept me plenty distracted from the inevitable, the end. I wasn't ready for it to be over and don't think I'll ever be. I came across J.D. when she lost all her pre-orders for the first book and never looked back. I've enjoyed watching the series grow. The series long battle of Rogue and Ara' s relationships, plus the hardships of their found family to support them through it all.

Thank you so much, J.D., for giving us Rogue and Ara (and Elora and Vaelor). Thank you for sacrificing yourself and giving Rogue and Ara their ending. You are amazing!

“There she was: my reason for living, my little storm, my mate, my Ara.”

“Well, I had one desire, to be exact, and she lay across from me, asleep in my shirt.”

“Even my beastly form recognized she was too beautiful to be anything other than treasure.”

“I would never take another breath that didn’t smell of rain and wildflowers.”

“I wondered how she hadn’t brought the realm to its knees - rather, how it hadn’t simply fallen before her. Men had worshipped for less.”

“I would follow her anywhere, to every corner of the world, to every realm, and across the veil.”

“I know this is real - we are real, because you hold the stars in your eyes when you’re in love. I’ve seen them, and I will again one day.”

“This was Rogue - my freedom, my home, my mate, my love. Mine.”

“You are light, Ara. If it’s too dark, simply shine brighter.”

“By earth and sky, by body and soul, I bind myself to you. For all my days, and all that may come after.”

INCREDIBLE 😭😭

The Last One Standing by J.D. Linton is a powerful and unforgettable conclusion to Rogue and Ara’s journey. Brutal, emotional, and unflinchingly intense, this final installment puts the couple through relentless trials—torture, loss, and tests that would break anyone else. Yet through every dark turn, Rogue and Ara continue to choose each other, walking through fire without hesitation.

What truly stands out is how Linton balances the darkness with hope. Even in the most harrowing moments, a small spark of hope proves to be enough to keep them—and the reader—going. Their bond is fierce, earned, and deeply moving, making every hardship feel meaningful rather than gratuitous.

This was a satisfying, emotionally charged ending that stayed true to the story’s tone while delivering a conclusion that feels deserved. If you’ve followed Rogue and Ara from the beginning, The Last One Standing is everything you could want: heartbreaking, hopeful, and impossible to put down.

The way I have been waiting for this ARC for over a year!!! The Last One Standing is the looonnggg awaited book 3 and completes the Rogue X Ara trilogy after the heartbreaking cliffhanger of The Last Draig. The physical, mental, & psychological abuse that both Ara and Rogue go through throughout this book is gut-wrenching but the outcome is completely worth it. This book is a thick one and definitely puts you through the ringer. It is not a light-hearted read and has dark topics. I cried the whole last 15 chapters. The ending mirrored the plot and was like a sunrise after the darkest, longest night. The last couple of chapters and the epilogue were everything I have been waiting for with this series and am so happy with the way everything wrapped up!

Thank you sooo much to JD Linton for providing the ARC of this book!

Wow… I’m not even sure I need any more words to describe this book than wow. Everything about this book was so gripping that there was literally no way to not binge read every chapter, every word, every letter because you won’t want to miss a single thing. This was such a beautiful ending to the Rouge and Ara series. Truly I don’t think that this could’ve been wrapped up any more perfectly, to which I say if you’re looking for a series that’s filled to the brim with swoon-worthy, enemies-to-lovers romance, a plot so full of twists and turns you won’t just be on the edge of your seat you’ll be out of your seat filled with to many emotions to count, so much banter, plenty of spice, more than a few tear jerker moments, so many moments that’ll make you gasp, and a well fought for happily ever after than I highly recommend grabbing this whole series today!

JD Linton just likes to rip your heart out and stomp on it! 💔😭

This epic conclusion to the Rogue X Ara series has me all in my feels. This is a CHONKY book and worth every page of it. Be warned, there is sooo much that happens to wrap up this series, but I promise the ending is worth it ❤️

I savored my read because I was almost afraid of the ending. I ate up every word and tear throughout this book. The way each character expresses their pain and journey really makes you take a step back and see what is important in front of you.

And please read The First Loss, the devastating story is crucial to the impact of this final book.

Thank you JD Linton for an arc and allowing us to join you on this amazing ride! ❤️

Ahhh, I have been pining to read this book for so long, I was so excited to receive the ARC! This book had me going through it in the best way possible. The wait was genuinely worth it.. you could tell the author poured her heart into these characters and their world and this felt like the perfect culmination of Rogue and Ara’s love, and all the trials, tribulations and trauma that it took to get there. I was invested every second of the way, and I am so sad to see this series go but I am also satisfied and at peace with how it ended.

Any book that can bring me to tears is a 5 star book to me, and she really got me at that 96% mark (IFKYK)…

The Last One Standing was perfection! This was a beautiful story and a perfect ending to Rogue & Ara’s story and the series. You will laugh, cry, and swoon with some suspense and spice! As a huge fan of Romantasy, I can easily say that the series is one of my all time favorite! I did not want their story to end and took my time getting through this book. If you’re a fan of Rogue, Ara, and all their family and friends you will be very happy with how it ends, and if you’re new – start at the beginning so you can fall in love like the rest of us. JD’s writing is exceptional and The Last One Standing was completely worth the wait.

I got an advanced copy of this book.

I was with this series from the very beginning and the end of this book is perfection. I really thought of Rouge and Ara sometimes during this time and I'm so happy this series is now finished.

Yes, there was heartbreak but in the end all loose ends (and then some) were tied up so beautifully and all the heartbreak was forgotten.

But to be fair, it took me a while to get all the names and relationships together again, but that's on me, because I did not do a reread of the series 😅

I can not wait to read the whole series again in one sitting. This will be so epic.

This book absolutely wrecked me. Beautifully done🥺

JD truly took us on an adventure of a lifetime in this series. From the first book where everything was new and mysterious, to the prequel where we knew the ending and it broke us anyways.

The Last One Standing was truly the finale this series deserved. Our characters were tested, they loved, they lost, they fought, they healed. Ara's resilience has always been one of my favorite things about her, but it's okay to not be okay sometimes. And Rogue was as swoony as ever. The world would be a better place if there were more like Rogue.

This scene had me absolutely sobbing, "Even with a blade at her throat, she cried, "I missed you," again and again."

Vaelor and Elora hold such a special place in my heart. Seeing bits of their story woven throughout this ending was so beautiful and bittersweet.

I love this story. I love these characters. The Rogue x Ara Series is timeless, powerful, romantic, tragic, and everything and romantasy should be.

Omg. First of all, I was BLESSED to be able to get this ARC. I have been waitttiinnngggg for this book since I finished the 3rd book. I’m in love. She is such an incredible writer. She captures every moment and feeling so thoroughly. You feel it yourself, and not many writers can make me FEEL like the character, instead of just a fly on the wall. If ya get what I’m saying. Please please please give this author a chance! I’m in no way paid to say this or given anything other than this ARC. I just truly love this writer.

After finding this series and reading all 3 books in one month, waiting for the final book was everything I hoped it was. We experienced so much from both our main characters, and I am so happy for their HEA. 5/5 stars, they will forever be in my mind.

With the flashbacks and the present, it was heartbreaking but empowering to see how Ara fought and grew. She is strong and I am happy for how her story ended. I also loved how Rogue never gave up, from his tragic childhood to who he is now, he deserves everything.

If you want a book series that will rip your heart to shred, tape it back together with little heartwarming moments, but also make you cry, then this series is for you.

I have been anticipating this final book for so long. I loved going on an adventure with Ara and Rogue. You get attached to them so quickly. Not going to lie, my heart hurt through most of this book, but I was rooting for the best for them and their found family. It is always satisfying seeing all the puzzle pieces fall into place. This is a series you could definitely enjoy more than once.

I absolutely love Ara and Rogue and the other 2 books. This book was so hard to read for me because I was so confused most of the time. I would have to go back and reread just to figure out we were in the middle of a flashback or we were now at a different place. Even during the action scenes toward the end, I was like what in the world is going on? Where did these story lines even come from? And then after getting the revelation, what was even the point of her trauma at the beginning of the book?

When I tell you I SOBBBBBBED. I really like the way this series was written. The dynamics between each character and their growth throughout the series was a good pace and made sense. I wish there was more to the story, but only because I wish it didn't end lol.

I also feel like everyone's response to each of their traumas was a legit response to have. The descriptions showing depression, anxiety, PTSD, etc. Ongoing support that people to lean on during hard times and heavy emotions, is relevant.

Wow…
Such a wonderful ending to Rogue and Ara’s story. This book broke me and put me back together again. The emotional turmoil these two went through was so well written. It had me in tears, as if I was experiencing the pain myself. I am so sad to see the end of these characters, but I am so happy they get the happy ending they deserve. JD, you truly are a treasure. Thank you for sharing your work with us.
