A solid comic-of-age and revenge tale telling the story of a young farmer boy struggling to keep his family intact after their parents and older brother are killed, and then his surprising transformation into a brutal bounty hunter, out for vengeance against those who wronged him, or those who corrupted his younger brother. The novel drags a bit in the middle where the character wanders around lost and hungry for way too long, then picks up steam when he is taken in and well trained by a noble Native American bounty hunter. Four stars.

Good western!

Typical John Legg western, which is to say excellent! I have read most of his books and have never been disappointed. Started reading and couldn’t stop, had to finish it.

Taking up for a spoiled dove left her dead, and him outside of town naked!

Travis VanHorn is down on his luck with no real money and still could not find his brother, Reese. Arriving at a small town he got a job working in one of the saloons to earn enough for his grubstake, thinking about giving up and going home to his wife, Callie. He was taught by his mom, that he should treat all women the same even if they were forced into being soiled doves. When one of the rowdier men, Kirby, a blowhard started roughly manhandling on one of the girls that he had befriended, Travis tried to take up for her to save her from being beaten. The outlaw decided that he would teach Travis a lesson for sticking his nose in his business, after all, she was just a whore to him.

Returning later to the saloon, as he entered, he took a fist in the face from Kirby, he then told Travis to strip naked and to go out into the street. As he walked behind Travis, he nodded to one of his men to drag the naked girl along and follow him. Telling the girl to kneel in front of Travis he threatened him to comply, or he would kill the girl. Being the young man that he was, he couldn’t do what Kirby wanted, then a shot rang out and she was dead. Travis was incensed but Kirby told him to keep his mouth shut and climb onboard an old nag of a horse. Leading Travis’s horse about 2 miles outside of town. When they stopped, he hit him in the face, which of course, knocked him off the horse. Kirby turned still leading the gray and left him with just a gun with one shot in it, telling him he had better use it wisely.

Shortly after the outlaw left, Travis figured he would use the gun to take his own life. Then he spotted a rattlesnake and without thought he fired, realizing too late, it was only a small limb that had moved due to the wind. Now he was alone, no way to kill himself and it was getting cold. Shortly after dark, Travis heard someone speak to him.

And the story begins…

This volume of the Blood Trail Series includes Blood Trail, Blood Feud, and Blood Vengeance.

What did I like? This was a very interesting book about Travis VanHorn and the different adventures and misadventures that he went through. I have to admit that it certainly touched me in spots with Huge alligator tears. Other than that, I didn’t have time to cry as the excitement kept me laughing, hurrahing, or holding my breath. I love a well-rounded storyline that keeps things moving along and this definitely kept me interested. Of course, I fell in love with Travis and wanted to help him at every turn.

What will you like? An extremely well-written storyline with lots of gunplay, great descriptions keeping the action moving, amazing characters, love, laughter, sadness, and just about every other action that you can think of. The details are amazing, painting wonderful pictures in your head and moving you along with all the mischief and mayhem that goes down. You will watch Travis turn from a boy to a man to be reckoned with. An excellent storyline that will keep the lights burning late. I know it did for me. “Blood Trail” is available today, April 7th, 2021. Don’t miss adding this to your Western Library from our exciting author, John Legg.

About as realistic western you will find. There is very much the adventure but it never forgets the time period and how life function back then. I enjoyed the book. Go Percy.
