Visiting old colleague, Ken Flatley, in an Edinburgh nursing home brings home to Rebus that he, too, is getting older.
Finding Ken troubled by the fact that several of the apparently healthy people in the home have suddenly died, and to put his mind to rest, rebis promises to dig around to see if someone is doing some drastic bed-clearing.

This is one of Ian Rankin's short stories in book form for Shortlist.
It's a pretty decent story and a good way of passing half an hour to 40 minutes. It's the first Inspector Rebus story that I've read and maybe I should read more Ian Rankin.
A decent short story or short book, whatever you want to call it.
Not a book but as good a short story about Rebus as any fan could want. Visiting a sergeant who had been helpful to him when was a new detective and was now in a care home, Rebus discovers two mysteries that need solving. With his usual mix of proper procedure and risk-taking Rebus solves both mysteries.
