Nick Gray never expected to arrive home to find an unknown alien waiting for him on his doorstep… and he certainly didn’t expect that alien to be his given mate… Having been surrounded by Valdor men ever since his people re-located to New Earth, Nick is both thrilled and excited at the prospect of welcoming Thorn, a Valdor male, into his life. Thorn is everything that Nick could have hoped for in a mate, and he is a willing slave in whatever the alien desires. Only it is not quite as simple as that, because Thorn hasn’t just heard Nick’s mating call, there are others waiting for them. And so, Nick and Thorn have no choice but to set off to the Valdor home world, on a journey to find their remaining mates. But will those mates be as accepting of Nick and Thorn as they are of each other, and will Nick find himself enslaved not only by one, but by five?

First of all, I have to say this was by far the best book of the series so far, at least as far as I am concerned. It has tension, a touch of heartache, some great loving moments, and a cliff-hanger that made me gnash my teeth and hope the author hurries up with the next volume!
There were also some differences to the way the relationships developed and not just in terms of the number of mates involved. First, two of the mates got to now each other, Nick, the human, and Thorn, one of the Valdor, the one who heard all their mating calls. Then they go to find the other three, who have already bonded. As you can imagine, that leads to some very interesting dynamics. Especially since Llai, one of those three, is adamant that Nick cannot possibly be their mate since he is human. I guess Llai is humanophobic, and it was fascinating to watch him struggle. I did feel for Nick though - the rejection he has to go through and the way the problem is eventually solved by an extremely unfeeling Llai is pretty horrible.
As for the cliff-hanger? It is a zinger. Of course I can't say anything about it because that would ruin the surprise, but boy oh boy. Can't wait to see what's next!
If you like complicated relationships between five men, four of whom are aliens, if you want to know what it's like to meet a humanophobic alien who is your mate, and if you're looking for a hot, entertaining, and suspenseful read, then you should give this book a try.
Because of the title, I spent most of this book worrying that Thorn was somehow faking the bond and somehow, artificially, convincing Nick that they were mates. Happily, that was not the case and the bond between Nick and all four of his Valdor mates was true and strong. The twist at the end was completely unexpected and I can't wait to read the next book as they find their sixth.
I really like this series. Each short story has the Valdor drawn to the human men in different scenarios. In this story Nick has recently settled in new Earth then has Thorn approach him offering himself as his mate. Having a relationship isn't something Nick ever thought he'd have since he's been lonely for long, so its kind of a good shock when he quickly falls for Thorn. Issue & uneasiness starts almost immediately when Thorn informs Nick they have more mates waiting to meet them. The new Valdor accept Thorn easily but don't accept Nick as readily. I enjoyed following the 5 build the relationships as they got to know each other.
