I wanted to love this book, but heroines who constantly run and then make odd decisions don't always sit well with me. Sabeen has a tragic and difficult past so her hesitancy when it comes to having a relationship with any man, let alone a white man, is completely understandable. There's an interesting and wide range of characters with diverse backgrounds in this historical story and their presence and positions in the story are completely believable. However, something kept me from loving this one. Gotta mull this one over a bit. Full review to come.
TW: mentions of SA, abuse, mentions of r*pe, and trauma related to it, death of a newborn (past tense and
CW: mentions of past slavery and threats of slavery towards the heroine
I am giving this 4.5 pirate spicy historical romance stars!! I really enjoyed this and it was really needed for me!!
Sabeen was such a lovable character who I wanted protected constantly despite the fact she could fight on her own and I just wanted to hug her everytime she brought her past while in slavery. The way she cared for those kids like they were her own i-😫 and she deserved THE WORLD despite not thinking she deserved much because of the torment she has endured for most of her life.
Pug (yes that's the hero's name), was so hot, caring, and possessive without being overbearing towards sabeen and I ate that up. I did. I did. And I loved how much he loved her without really knowing that it was love. The man would literally kill anyone for her.
And the smut scenes they had together or even when it was just touching OOOHHH MAMA. I'll definitely be revisiting.
Overall, although the end was a bit rushed and there was no epilogue I had the best time with this and I wish there was a novella on their life at sea together 🤧💗
TW: past sexual, physical and mental abuse. On page killing.
Okay. I’ll be honest. I judged this book by its cover. That is one of the reasons it took me so long for me to get to it. I’m telling you, don’t make the same mistake I did. This was a great read.
Without giving too many spoilers, I believe Burke does a good job navigating Sabeen’s trauma. The best way I can explain it is while her past does inform some of her actions, Sabeen isn’t consumed by her past. She doesn’t give up on life, and she still cares deeply for others in times most would be only concerned about their own survival. I think that is the most beautiful thing about Sabeen.
As for Pug, he was almost perfect for Sabeen. His care and patience was so nice to see.
Here is where the spoiler part comes in:
I’m definitely still heartbroken that the kids were separated from each other. They go through a lot with Sabeen. I thought is was going to be a nice found family ordeal, but then they all started splitting up as the book went on. I understand wanting what they think is best for the kids, but keeping them all together could have worked, right?

Giving it 3 stars because of all the awful grammar mistakes. I liked the story, but "she ran her fingers through his chest chair" ... really? Was this not proofread prior to publishing?
I was actually excited to read Pug's story and when I saw the word 'cutlass' in the first sentence, well I was hooked. (Since cutlass= Caribbean, which = my attention grabbed) As in her previous books, Aliyah Burke presents an action packed story with surprises throughout the whole novel. I just felt that Sabeen was extremely subdued. Yes, I realize with her past it is difficult for her not to be but, to me, she lacked a certain fire. That is probably the only reason this book didn't get five stars from me. All things considered, Her Pirate Rogue was a great read and I'm looking forward to more of Mme Burke's multicultural historical romances.
