The Odes of Orbyz
In the magnificent subterranean ice city of Nymbuz, a sequence of disappeared citizens has the community in a state of unease. For Tybla, a warrior turned Adept of the Order of the Mane, the disappearances hit close to home, as most of those missing are from her neighbourhood.
When a massive explosion in the mines sends shock waves through the very place she’s sworn to protect, Tybla is determined to investigate. Was it their ancient rivals, the surface-dwelling Fallarine, or something lurking in the Deep-Dark of their homeland?

Finished 24 hrs before I leave for Tomorrowland's Global Journey 😂🙌This one started out with a rough impression to be honest, but I ended up enjoying it in the end. Reading the reviews of the other Tomorrowland books, this one falls in the exact same footsteps somehow.
Cons:
* Amateurish or YA-ish writing. There's a lot of potential, but I feel like the author could use a mentor to bring their writing to the next level
* For some reason, lots of kind of cringe metaphors, like "he approached as silent as an ice serpent"
* It should be "show, don't tell," but there was a lot of telling
* Multiple typos
* One of the characters uses they/them pronouns, which is never addressed and is totally fine since it shows it's just part of who they are and doesn't need to be addressed, but it made the writing confusing in some parts, especially when there's multiple people involved in scenes where it's uncertain who "they" is referring to. Perhaps some writing adjustments could have fixed this
* Some plot peculiarities, like a character gets impaled in the shoulder and almost dies...and then they just walk out next scene lol
Pros:
* Wow it picked up the last 100 pages and had an interesting twist. It felt a little "alright, well, I gotta keep reading so I can finish this in time" for a while, but I finished the last 100 pages in one sitting and didn't want to put it down. The aforementioned cons weren't noticeable at this point, I'm not sure if that's just because more effort was put into the end or what, but it felt like a different book in a good way
* It was fun to learn about two different societies who deal with the magic of the crystals differently based on their background and seeing how their societies formed
* The story itself makes me excited for the theme and to see the stage for Tomorrowland. Knowing the lore behind everything now, I can't wait to be surprised by what will be brought to life. It was already exciting to get the bracelet box and being like "OOOO I KNOW WHAT ALL OF THIS IS!" lol
* The hardcover book is gorgeous

As I'm writing this and ending my "journey" with this book, I'm remembering it fondly, despite the rough start. Is it worth a read if you're going to Tomorrowland? Absolutely. Is it worth it otherwise? Perhaps if you're looking for an icy magic adventure and keep in mind the flaws. I wouldn't tell people "you have to read this!" but I enjoyed it and am happy I read it. It's a little hard to rate as I look at my other 4 star books, it doesn't feel like it holds up to that, but as a festival accompaniment, it feels like a 4. A true 3.5/5

Tomorrowland 2025 zal er eentje zijn voor in de geschiedenisboeken. Hun mainstage, hun jaarlijkse visitekaartje, ging in vlammen op. Dit podium en andere kleinere dragen bij aan de magie van het festival. Een magische wereld dat elk jaar anders is. Wat ik recent te weten kwam is dat er nu voor het derde jaar op rij een boek geschreven werd over die wereld.
Voor 2025 kreeg dit boek de naam De oden van Orbyz.
Het verhaal speelt zich af op een ijskoude wereld. Bevolkt met fantastische wezens, die waanzinnig worden door de rode kristallen die overal aanwezig zijn. In de ondergrondse stad Nymbuz verdwijnen er mensen uit de wijk waar Tybla woont. Tybla is een krijger die adept geworden is bij de orde van de Leeuwenmanen. Wanneer een enorme explosie in de mijnen schokgolven door de stad stuurt start Tybla een zoektocht naar de waarheid. Zijn het de Fallarijnen, de enige menselijke soort die op het oppervlakte woont, of is het een verschrikking uit de diepe duisternis? Midden in deze chaos zet een toevallige ontmoeting alles wat Tybla weet op losse schroeven. Moet ze de schuld dichter bij huis zoeken?
Mijn gedacht
Het motto van Tomorrowland is Live Today, Love tomorrow, Unite forever. Dit motto vat het volledige verhaal samen. Het is zeer nadrukkelijk aanwezig in het verhaal. De auteur van het verhaal zou ene John Newman zijn maar ben ik niet zeker. Het staat namelijk nergens vermeld in het boek, wat ik wel jammer vind voor de schrijver want het zijn zijn woorden die op papier staan, zijn gedachten.
Ed van Eeden is de vertaler van dit boek.
De vormgeving van het boek is schitterend. Een kaft met blauwe schijn om de koude te simuleren van de wereld. Sprayed edges die de rode kristallen weergeven die een grote rol spelen in het verhaal. Liefhebbers van tekeningen en kaarten worden verwend met een landkaart en stadskaart. Ideaal om het verloop van het verhaal te volgen. Op de schutbladeren voor- en achteraan werden prachtige tekeningen geplaatst die na het lezen goed gelinkt kunnen worden met het verhaal.
De wereldopbouw is top in dit verhaal. Goed vormgegeven , gevuld met fantasierijke wezens passend bij de gecreëerde wereld. Deze wezens worden op het einde van het boek nog eens extra belicht in een extra topic.
Het verhaal verloopt vlot. Zeer goeie flow. Het eerste hoofdstuk vertelt de geschiedenis van Orbyz. De overige hoofdstukken switchen meestal tussen Zadoa en Tybla. Het verhaal belicht vanuit de twee hoofdpersonages. Personages die goed uitgewerkt zijn en redelijk wat voor de kiezen krijgen.
Het verhaal bevat genoeg spanning om mij mee te sleuren naar de laatste pagina. Minder spannende stukken bevatten dan weer belangrijke discussies die het motto van Tomorrowland omarmen.
In het slot is het meeste wel afgewerkt. Net zoals de podia elk jaar verandert is dit boek een stand alone. Het slot bevat enkele verrassingen maar de aandachtige lezer zag ze toch al lichtjes aankomen.
Conclusie
Ik reken mezelf toch wel als fan van de boeken die in opdracht van Tomorrowland geschreven zijn. De vorige twee jaaredities ga ik dus ook proberen te bemachtigen. Eerst wat sparen en dan via de Tomorrowland shop aanschaffen.
Orbyz is een gemene ijskoude wereld waar tegen het einde toch wel wat warmte te vinden is in de harten van de bewoners. Goeie wereldopbouw, prachtige personages, spannend opgebouwd.
Fantasieboeken moeten gewoon kaarten bevatten en deze eis werd hier zeker ingewilligd.
Verliefd geworden op Sprayed Edges moet ik zeggen. Is mijn eerste boek en hopelijk niet mijn laatste. Ik reken dit boek als LUEK. Normaal koop ik geen boeken maar een vriend van mijn collega had in een dronken bui dit boek en het boek The library of tomorrow gekocht met het idee dat dit boeken waren over het ontstaan van Tomorrowland het festival. Ik kon ze voor een habbekrats overnemen. Een zwak moment , en ik had ze gekocht.

Ugh 😩 the official fantasy book by @tomorrowland .
It felt like a monk wrote it, copying the religious drumming of the Old Testament. The first 100 pages were the most boring world building in such an old fashioned Dutch that it read at snail speed. Barely anything happened between pages 100-300. The use of the possessive pronouns “hun” was wildly disturbing , cryptic and non-sensical… it almost like it was computer translated to Dutch and they had no clue which possessive pronouns to use. Zero connection with the characters. The action picked up after page 300 when it felt like a different ghost writer came on board. An inkling of an emotional connection is built in the last 20 pages. Very teenage literature, not even young adult. Big thumbs down.
The sprayed edges are the only nice thing about this flop. Be warned ! I would only give it 0.5* because it’s a nice hard cover edition
