"Corpses submerged in fish tanks filled with formaldehyde… We’ve got a macabre bastard on our hands."

Lately, I’ve been trying to read more manga. Yes, I’ve read Ito and some other horror ones but I’ve been trying to expand my readings in that area. This is one that recently popped up, so here we are.

This was really good and interesting. I didn’t know what to expect since it’s not bizarro, so I was pleasantly surprised. Really enjoyed this one and I can’t wait for the next volume.

This is a ton of fun for the right reader, which I am, but I do want to add a pile of caveats to that. Not the least of which is that I found this knee-slappingly ridiculous, which may not be the tone it’s going for.

Manga that feel exactly like what a non-reader might envision if you said you were reading a manga are surprisingly rare, but this one has that preconception dead to rights and plays it all completely straight.

A young girl who can detect serial killers with a touch teams up with a cop who knows she can find these perps somehow and they set off on an edgy and violent path of revenge. Also this path has tons of breasts.

It’s a fantastic bit of nonsense to hang a crime drama/potential romance/thriller on, with all of these serial killers based on the fictional portrayals of same rather than anybody from the real world. This is Hannibal Lecter by way of Professor Moriarty.

Which immediately lends itself to a wonderfully dopey detail: that all these killers are obsessed with one specific thing and our dynamic duo has to figure it out so Kuroi, the female, can draw the perps in and then incapacitate them.

That this is played dead serious just makes it more fun. It’s fairly clever, honestly, but impossible for me to take seriously. Yet it takes itself incredibly seriously, to my benefit and perhaps its detriment.

It reminded me of one of my all time favourite series, Can’t Stop Cursing You, which was a story about overblown criminals and twisty mind games that was howlingly over-the-top. This tries to tamp that down a bit, but possibly to its detriment.

This doesn’t even crack a smile when half a picture shredded in a fax machine turns out to be a woman in a bikini, yet she was sharing a frame with a man wearing a suit vest holding a baby. To say nothing of how long that shredding must have been just sitting there.

As a minor aside, I did like the scenario we ended on, where a secret lesbian hook-up spot is targeted. I’m a fan of stories that do strip the gloss off yuri (much as that’s my genre of choice) and go for a more realistic version (plus or minus an endurance test in a sauna, of course).

My major complaint is how ridiculously exploitative this whole affair feels. There isn’t a single male who gets imperilled here and, when females do, it ends up with them topless or in their underwear (we literally open on naked women’s bodies). There’s a real double standard that’s hard to miss.

Still, there’s zero chance I won’t be back for more. This is a blast and I had an amazing time with it, even if it has a little ick and a lot of self-import that could stand a wee puncture or two. No bellybutton piercing should ever hold that much gravitas.

3 stars - the good kind of 3, as we say. It’s an easy recommend if you like the idea of this and it works for both the reader taking it dead serious and those who aren’t in the least. My real issue is how it constantly portrays the female cast; I think this would be an easy 4 stars otherwise.

They must've released this book early. GoodReads isn't letting me rate it. I'll have to remember to come back in a few days. Anyway - 5 stars. This was so much better than I was expecting. My expectations were low after getting into Momo the Blood Taker which was a mess and would have been almost perfect if Momo had been left out of it. I was worried with another female/male cop team up that the female might be over the top and stylized like Momo, but she's not. Anyway, this book hits the ground running and doesn't hit the usual first book pitfalls. We get cases and we get enough info to get what's going on, but we don't get huge info dumps it exposition. The series is letting info slip at a natural pace. Both of the mcs are realistic and sharp. I'd think the cop would want to know more about the person he's working with, but the reader is given the information he lacks. I'm surprisingly happy that I took a chance on this.

I really like the concept here. I am curious though what Hinata's backstory is on her ability to find out who the murderers are. So far there has been no attempt at explaining it and if they just leave it hanging like that it will seriously hurt the story. Other than that it is very entertaining and the art is nicely done as well.

I'm very torn on whether to round this up or down - it's this close to being really good, but falters in places when it leans into its exploitative side.

ooh. a unique premise with interesting characters and some bloody mysteries. the art is beautiful, but the nudity is unnecessary at best sometimes lol.
