The Witcher Volume 10: The Bear and the Butterfly

Rate this book
A hunt for a vampire pulls Geralt into a series of swindles, twists, and punch-ups.

Geralt arrives to a small town rumored to be under attack by a vampire. The bounty on its head is substantial, drawing in every two-bit monster hunter for miles, but the competition stiffens when another Witcher, wearing the medallion from the School of the Bear, joins the hunt.

Geralt is offered an advantage in the hunt by a peasant woman, but there's a catch, and a small issue of her being locked up in prison. And with an orphan boy appointing himself as Geralt’s squire, the White Wolf finds himself with an unlikely team, and even more unlikely rivals, but are they after the same prize?

(4 of 5 for decent "witchery investigate" tale)
Well, this is more like business as usual for this Witcher series: decent art, nice story, some of the Witcher lore done properly. The issue is in the issues, as this is (as common) four issues long story, which is, well, more like which isn't - much space. The story and the scene are as complex as there is space for them. You can take from one and add to another, if you know your craft and keep balance (or you can do whatever you want, but that hardly gets a good rating). And the short stories seem nice, but I think we would deserve something longer here. To get more depth, more complexity, more lore and richer atmosphere. But as long as there isn't space for that, these short stories will do. For Witcher fans like me, at least.

A solid little Witcher mystery with a few fun twists & turns along the way, and some 'aha!' moments where it all falls into place. Deftly executed across four issues without feeling bloated or rushed, and with some appropriately sketchy artwork from Stephen Green.

These Witcher comics are never going to have huge story revelations or status quo changes, but they're at their best when they do stuff like this, and do it well. Well done Si Spurrier and friends.
