when i first read this, i was expecting a typical historical bl fantasy manhwa with a mediocre plot and flat characters—something predictable, maybe even forgettable. honestly, i just wanted something to pass the time. yet this story completely caught me off guard. it unfolds with an unexpectedly rich and thought-provoking plot, delving deep into themes of reincarnation, religion, and the intense political strife born from clashing ideologies and national identities. it doesn’t shy away from showing the ugliness of human greed, and it poses hard questions about faith, identity, and the price of peace.

what truly hooked me, though, were the characters—layered, human, and painfully real. especially ian. his journey is one of quiet anguish, of constantly being torn between what he was taught to believe and what he slowly, vulnerably begins to feel. there’s something deeply moving about watching him wrestle with the foundations of his identity. he was told all his life that he was cursed, burdened with shame and fear, yet he still searches for something to hold on to—something that tells him he’s worthy, that he’s more than the darkness people cast on him (which he initially found through the 'intentional' affection of cardinal brixton but i digress). the way he struggles to reconcile his duty with his heart's desire, to rebuild his self-worth piece by piece, was such a gripping thing to read. and the way he slowly found to accept himself because of 'jack' because they have the same 'curse' or power within them. jack became the one who truly helped ian to accept himself.

this is my third time rereading it, and yet it still grips me just as much as it did the first time. it's truly one of the high-class historical manhwa out there, and i genuinely recommend it to anyone who’s looking for something beyond surface-level romance. (i might be exaggerating and bias but there is some truth to what i'm saying!)

So, this webtoon really surprised me

The whole world development based on a church who try the best to erase all the curse (magic) in the world, while a cardinal helps a boy to become a holy knight while hiding his powers were really interesting

But I have to say, the best part is the relationship between Ian and Jack taking their time to know each other, even with all the chaos around.

I have to say that the miscommunication part really pissed me off, but overall it was a good first season. And after knowing Brian's story, I totally could empathize with Jack (I refuse to use his dragon name. Jack is better).

The second season I have to say that got me bored some parts, because of the cliffhanger of the first season. But understand how Jack came to this world, and how he loved his first human, is really important and it's helping me to dive into his story.

The author's note admits that this is pretty much a jumble of every fantasy-related idea they could pour into the kitchen sink. It's a pity, because beyond the messiness, this has some really interesting elements.

The past lives thing is wildly unnecessary, and I'm not excited about that being explored more, but perhaps it will work out okay within the story. Currently, the plot is more or less as follows:

Ian was born with powers he and everyone around him didn't understand. It was seen as some sort of curse that he needed to repress, because he was far too dangerous whenever his emotional outbursts unleashed it. He would injure people, burn crops, destroy everything around him.

With this in mind, it makes Absolutely Zero Sense that the book would open with a bunch of kids repeatedly bullying him. If every time they attack him they get brutally injured in turn, that...would not happen. Bullies are cowards. But since his biggest bully is the son of the wealthiest guy in town, who helps to subsidize the church where Ian had been staying after his parents abandoned him (also afraid of his powers), he's basically forced to leave the town.

Fortunately, Cardinal Heron Brixton from a much bigger city had already been on his way to take a look at this cursed boy, and took him in and essentially raised him like a son. (The summary on the back of the book is confusing, because there are TWO people named Brixton - the Cardinal and a younger guy who's his nephew and who hates Ian. I don't really see why they needed to be related, either?)

We skip through pretty much all of the backstory from both Ian's childhood and his church training to become part of the Knights Templar. We learn through flashbacks that Heron told Ian yes he's cursed, but it's okay, if the two of them stick together, they can get through it. Heron has Ian wear a pendant that suppresses his powers. Ian is utterly devoted to him and cares deeply about what Heron thinks of him.

Even so, he continues to get into trouble - being late to services, fighting with Heron's nephew, murdering the marquess of their town...

This was the part that made absolutely no sense.

Ian went to this meeting with the full knowledge of the church, in order to "provide counsel." Based on the way he's portrayed - a troublemaker, has dangerous magic, constantly sleeps in late and misses things - I don't get why he would be assigned to this meeting to begin with. But he goes into it with his mind already made up to do something Heron had certainly not asked of him.

The marquess has been spreading rumors about an impending war with another nation, led by a formerly brutal but currently wise king named Sol, who is half dragon and extraordinarily powerful. Sol has been recruiting soldiers and doing enough fishy things to help fuel the rumors, but the marquess has been using the people's fear to collect money. He's also been engaging in a side activity of human trafficking, mainly of children.

So Ian thinks he deserves to die, and kills him and his attendant, leaving a letter that frames the dragon's nation.

I...don't understand the point of any of this, frankly. Wasn't he opposed to the nonexistent upcoming war being leveraged to steal from the people? Wouldn't the marquess's death make things way worse on that front? Why not just expose the marquess's dealings?

Anyway, Sol has also heard about the rumors, and since he's not a big fan of his nation being dragged into things, he wanders off to this town to figure out what's going on. He, not to make a pun, is by far the brightest spot of the story so far - I am an absolute sucker for characters like him. His relationship with his main attendant/advisor/whoever was also funny and great.

Sol and Ian run into each other, but Ian has no idea who he is and tries to kill him, too, as a witness of what he's done. He doesn't realize that Sol has his own magical powers and is able to both survive the attack and revive the marquess.

Ian ends up getting drawn into Sol's trap, and they form an odd bond as they work to investigate the trafficking (still continuing even with a sort of dead marquess) and work to control Ian's powers. Because as Sol explains, it's not a curse at all, just something he was born with, and it can be both useful and beautiful if he's trained how to use it properly, rather than simply unleashing it when his emotions are too strong.

Loved the magical rose Sol created for him. Love the weird chemistry they already have. Love that even though Ian is still utterly devoted to Heron - who is obviously evil and is probably the true mastermind behind the trafficking too - he's already starting to trust Sol and desperately wants to believe he's not actually cursed.

I do think the plot is going to stay messy, but I like the characters a lot so far, so I'm willing to ride it out. Even if some elements don't make a whole lot of sense, Sol and Ian are delightful, and Heron seems like he's going to make a complex and interesting villain.

Honestly don’t have much to say on this one. It’s clearly setting the world and story up. It interested me enough. Also props to Tokyo Pop for the quality of this manwhas paper and also how despite having better quality paper it’s cheaper than manwha from seven seas and ize press. Funny how that works isn’t it?

Found this on a whim on Hoopla and I'm so glad I gave it a chance! I'm loving the characters and the world-building, and I'm very intrigued to see how Ian and Jack's relationship develops.

This kind of needs to be a review in two parts. The first part is for this book as Vol.1 in a longer story: it's great - just enough mystery and intrigue to get you hooked on the characters and the world, but also not jam-packed with worldbuilding and lore so that you get smothered by the detail.

Ian is a perfect protagonist- I was super invested in him from the very beginning as a powerful underdog doing his best not to be overwhelmed by his power, and trying to only do good with it even though the entire world seems to be against him. He's got great layers to his personal and professional morality, dabbling in grey areas that make for a complex, flawed character.

That's it for Vol. 1 - overall, it's a great introduction to the story, the world, and the characters. From there, I spun out into the webtoon, which continues to be great, but is unfortunately not finished (as of October 2025). It takes a real turn at the end of season 1, and season 2 turns into a bit of a two-for-one, with a giant flashback which is practically it's own story. It's related to the main story, sure, but it's also entirely separate. It's not that I didn't enjoy the journey, just that it's always odd to be so invested in the MC (Ian) only to have him vanish for a solid 50 or more episodes. There's a heap of gently unfolded world-building and backstory that changes how you perceive the story thus far. Honestly, kudos to the author for achieving a really delicate balance of making me invested in both the past, and the present narratives as they overlap and intertwine.

From there, it's hard to say more without spoilers, but overall, I really, really, enjoyed this story. It's got a few quirks, but they're mostly managed well, and I'm just annoyed that the end isn't available yet. Hopefully I remember to check back in in about a year, when hopefully it will be complete.

Overall, this was really good, let down only by imperfect (but by no means bad) pacing.

Ian Gloucester is cursed. When he loses his temper, people around him die violently or are badly hurt. Villagers want him thrown out, but a cardinal takes a notice of him and makes him a templar knight. He even gives Ian a pendant that supresses his powers.

As an adult, Ian is less than a stellar knight, but he’s the cardinal’s favourite. Behind his back, Ian handles criminals of higher classes working against the country or church, usually permanently. On one such mission, he gets caught by a mysterious man from the neighbouring kingdom. “Jack” has similar powers, but he can actually use them. For him, it’s magic, not a curse.

Jack pulls Ian into investigating who wants to start a war between their countries. On a side, he expects Ian to learn to use his magic. But Ian doesn’t trust him. And he shouldn’t. The reader knows a secret about Jack that Ian has no idea of: Jack is actually the king of the neighbouring kingdom.

This started a bit slowly and I had to read the beginning twice to figure out how Ian ended as a templar. But it picks up pace as it goes on. Ian is in for a whirlwind in the hands of Jack. This likely leads to a romance, maybe even a triangel drama, but there’s nothing of that here yet. Art was good, but it always takes me a while to realise the layout for the published version is left to right.

First volume contains episodes 0-11 of the webtoon.

I received free copy from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

I would like to thank Edelweiss and TOKYOPOP for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.

Volume 1 contains episodes 0-11

I really liked this! The dynamic scenes, the pretty palette and aesthetic choices, and the interesting characters made Eternal Covenant, Volume 1 a dynamite visual + reading experience. The story itself had great pace, and the layout flowed nicely along with it! I also looooved the use of cute chibis which added some playful energy to break up the seriousness of the plot once things got going!

Ian's beginning was a harsh one. Discriminated against because of his "curse" when he was a boy, he was taken in by Cardinal Brixton and eventually became one of the Knights Templar. His brand of justice was a unique one, and crossing paths with the noble, Jack, had him reflecting on the magic he was born with, following the threads of corruption in Derwin, and looking at the Cardinal a bit more closely than before.

This was an awesome, foundational first volume in a series that promises a lot of intriguing adventures to come for Ian and Jack! Can't wait for Volume 2!

Ian grew up told that he was cursed and knowing he was somehow different with this power inside him that would react without any control from him. He finds his salvation in serving Cardinal Brixton, who helps to suppress Ian's power, though he seems to have some other knowledge about Ian that isn't shared. The last thing Ian expected while working undercover was to meet Jack, the hidden king of the neighboring country who has a power like his and helps him begin to understand this unique ability. There are a lot of moving pieces with more than a few secrets and gaps in the story so far as this first volume only really sets the stage of who the characters are, how they meet, and how they begin to interact together as they try to unravel the corruption they've found. Really, will need to read the next volume to find out if the story picks up at all or stays on a slow burn that may not be as engaging for some readers.

Not sure why these reviews are so low. Maybe the reviewers read too early and there wasn't enough story to get invested. This a slow burn. A feeling of something lurking in the background that you are unaware of for some time. Still, I stuck it out and was rewarded with an Acotar-like feeling.

The artwork was stunning and the character's wardrobe even more so. I loved the glow in the character's eyes when angry it gave off a very menacing aura. Ian is complicated. He is trying to do the right thing always thinking of himself as a monster. Then Jack appears and flips his world on its head.

Jack is such a remarkable character. Honestly, his selflessness made me cry. Even if others make him out to be the villain he will not contradict them to keep his loved one happy and safe. His self-sacrificing nature makes me want to pull my hair out and also kiss his stupid face.

I don’t understand why this has such low ratings? I think it’s fantastic!

Eternal Covenant is a gay historical fantasy manhwa about rebirth, dragons, wars, curses, and finding your long lost love. The art style is wonderful. You can read this on Tappytoon.

Though the story is still ongoing, I reread the entire thing yesterday so I’ll mark this one as “read”.

I love this Manga. It's definitely my favorite bl. I loved the world building, story line, character design, the art style and the slow burn romance

Reading it felt like fireworks. I was definitely burning in passion. I'm honestly not sure if it's still ongoing but I hope because I want to read more of it. I want more of them

Slow, a little interesting but not sure if it’s worth buying the expensive physical books? I’m contemplating buying vol 2. It’s a good enough cliff hanger but is it worth the money? 😔
