Evangeline Heart has just buried her lover and soul mate. She's grieving, especially as she is a profession assassin, and her lover was murdered in retaliation for her last assignment.
Evangeline is visited by an archangel who tells her she must rescue her lover's soul from the dungeons of hell, She must find 3 items to open the portal and free her lover's soul.
But time is limited, and she has no idea what the items are or where to even begin looking for them.
This is really outside my preferred genre, but the more I read, the more entrenched in the story I became. Evangeline has some interesting, maybe a bit quirky, people who will join forces with her .. because it's not just her lover's soul that needs saving .. it's all of mankind.
Well written, there are a few surprises, and the characters are solidly drawn. Cass, the four-footed friend, was one of my favorites. I look forward to the next installment to see where they all go from here.
Many thanks to the author for the digital copy of this fantasy fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
*I received a copy of this book from one of the authors, in exchange for an honest review.*
When Jen Greyson, one of the two authors of this novel, approached me for a review and showed me the synopsis, I was greatly intrigued. The summary mentioned archangels, an assassin as the heroine, and a mission to rescue said heroine’s dead fiancee’s soul. Right away, I agreed to a review of this novel, and i’m happy to say that this book didn’t disappoint.
Immediately, I felt sympathy for Lina. Her fiancee was killed, because of someone she had assassinated during her work. Also, she wasn’t a cold-blooded killer, as she had a code by which she conducted her job. Lina was fierce, determined to succeed, and totally loyal to her family and friends. As Lina was the narrator of the story, I felt like I got a good understanding of her personality and why she acted the way she did. However, I do believe that there is more to her character. She wasn’t exactly unique in the urban fantasy genre, so I’m hoping that in the next books in this series, she becomes more so.
The side characters varied from angel, to thief, to old scholar. Clay was someone i very much liked. He was flirtatious, usually making jokes or laughing at something, and someone I could definitely see being good for Lina. Even if any kind of romantic relationship isn’t something that should happen yet. Thankfully, any of those feelings were just physical in this story, and they made Lina feel quite guilty. Then, there was Ralph, the old scholar who collected relics, specifically religious ones. He was endearing, a kind of grandfather figure. The fact that his memory wasn’t all that great just made him seem that much more “wise old man”, but I liked him anyway. Lastly, there was Metatron. An archangel, and the one who put Lina on the mission that this book involves, he isn’t one of the most trustworthy characters. I felt that he had some kind of agenda, and am just waiting to find out what that is in the next book of this series.
This story follows Lina as she comes back from her fiancee’s funeral, meets Metatron, and then becomes entrenched in the world of holy relics, and the war between archangels. Then, there was the search for a relic which her mother had uncovered before her murder. The book was filled with action. It wasn’t as dark as I felt like it would be, but I liked it. The fast pace, mystery of Metatron’s true motive, and the action kept me reading.
Overall, this was a good urban fantasy. Books involving archangels and a war between them aren’t quite as unique as they used to be, and this book wasn’t wholly new in the genre. But it featured a heroine who I could get behind, with some intriguing and likable side characters. Plus, the action was quite well-done. If you’re looking for something easy, quick, and paranormal that isn’t vampires or werewolves, go for this book.
Lina is an assassin. After she is left alone, to be raised by a family friend, her life took a direction she would never have anticipated. After her finance is killed because of something she did, her life is torn upside down. Can she ever forgive herself?
After she is approached by Archangel Metatron, she learns what really happened with her mother's death....and there may be a chance that she can save her finance's soul.
On a search for ancient relics, Lina has the mission of a lifetime. After a robbery gone wrong, she finds loyalty in a professional thief, and a professor that is wise in ancient relics.
First off, I love a story that involves ancient relics and their mysteries. How fun it that? This story was fast paced and full of action. The adventure is thrilling, full of the unexpected, humor, and heartache over her mother's devotion. I love the mystery surrounding Metatron, and how he tries to give clues, when he isn't suppose to help.
It's a fun read. I look forward to the mystery behind the other relics that will come in the next installments.
Fun book with an interesting main character and premise. Feels like I just read half of a book because there was no real conclusion at the end. The drawback of reading series books these days I guess. I would prefer the entire story in one long book because I'm not patient but still enjoyed this one.
Really enjoyed this book, the author kept me engaged, wanting to learn more about the story. The mixture of biblical truth and fantasy was enjoyable and tantalizing. As I continued to read the book, I kept thinking it would be a movie I would love to watch. Can't wait to read book 2!
This is the first book of the Evangeline Heart Adventures. Lina relieves her past in order to move on with her life as well as help her fiancé move on after his death. A fast moving short story that kept me wanting to find out what would happen next.
