Marked By the Wolf: Part 1

Rate this book
Danica “Danny” Lewis wanted something more in life. She wanted a boyfriend, riches, or at least to get out of her office job. She got all she bargained for, and a fur coat when she falls into the clutches of a pack of organized werewolves intent on making her into doggy biscuits. Her rescue comes in the form of a handsome and powerful werewolf named Mark who woos her in the hopes of getting more out of the bargain than a good scratch behind the ears. Marked By the Part One is the first entry in the Marked By the Wolf serial, and is not intended to be read as a standalone story.

MARKED BY THE WOLF is a very short freebie read, the first part in a series, about a young woman named Danny who has a very eventful night out. After being invited into an elite party, she decides to accept the invitation from a stranger and stumbles onto what soon becomes a literal bloodbath, as humans are slaughtered by werewolves for a sacrificial event. I know what you're thinking: well, that escalated quickly. What follows is a short story on the aftermath of the event, as she appears to suffer a bite mark that won't heal, as well as suffer harassment from those involved from the night.

The story is written in a very enjoyable way and I was interested in what was going to happen next, and what Danny would do. However, a few details regarding the plot made little sense. While it was refreshing to have fierce werewolves hungry for blood rather than attractive teenage girls, this doesn't last long, as seemingly out of nowhere one of the attractive male werewolves decides to mark Danny, and quickly determines this means they must spend the rest of their lives together. Her attractive appearance is the only reason he appears to do this, and the fact that he is equally attractive is likely the reason why she barely seems to react to the new information, or perhaps it's his nice car, fine suit or his expensive abode. Unfortunately the story ends before there is any real connection between them, or before Danny can explain why she so quickly got over the fact that she saw her fellow humans slaughtered only days before by his kind.

Another issue I had with the story is Danny's character. While she does transcend the innocent archetype that many paranormal romance heroines seem to possess, she can be quite inconsistent. During her job she has no trouble sleeping during work hours, and yet, she turns down her attractive boss because she doesn't want to be caught breaking the rules and risk losing her position. However, I like the fact that her dialogue is blunt and sassy, without coming across as whiny. It is slightly irritating that as the main heroine every male in the story is suddenly attracted to her for her appearance alone.

Moreover, perhaps more due to the length than because of anything else, the story had a very simple structure focusing mainly on her work life, and cutting to scenes with her interactions with werewolves. Apparently Danny has no friends or family who she talks to on a daily basis, or who she can talk to at all about the massacre she narrowly escaped from the other night.

Overall, I only gave this story a rating as high as I did because it was admittedly enjoyable. It's refreshing to have werewolves that are intimidating rather than adorable, and there was an interesting plot-twist about the identity of one of the minor characters which was actually hilarious. There were also many werewolf-related puns in the text which add to the overall humour. While the story is short and incomplete as a standalone, it's quick and harmless on a wider scale.

"So it's either membership in a death cult or death? Being a werewolf is worse than being in a sorority."

Okay, so Marked By the Wolf is obviously a werewolf romance novella. It is from Danica (aka Danny) Lewis's point of view. At first I thought she was just stupid and her parents didn't teach her basic things people should know, like:

This was a pretty good werewolf book. It was a super easy read and super short. Sometimes her choices mad me frustrated but she somehow dulled that a little with her humor.

Ok, what the heck!!! Who just goes to some random party with some one they just met??? Part of me thinks she got what she deserved. Although she was able to escape, kudos for that. I thought it strange that Roger just happened to run in to her. Also she did another rational thing when she tried to go to the police... of course, there was a werewolf there as well. I'm actually a bit intrigued to see what actually happened between her and the blue eyes werewolf.

A fast-paced, action packed novella, with some flaws, that I really enjoyed!

This is the first part of a novella trilogy, and it is free on Amazon, a clever marketing trick to draw readers in to the story. I particularly like the novella format, I usually stay away from looong novels with pages and pages of dreary, detailed descriptions of things. I also am quite fond of the new trend of novella serials, it's like reading a TV episode of a story. Offering the first part for free is a great thing for the reader to sort of "try it out" for fit. If you like the story and want to read more, you will have no problem buying the rest of the parts in the series.

Marked By the Wolf: Part 1 succeeds in filling my expectations story-wise. The pace is quick and exciting, the story is full of action and it feels just too short, as any good story should feel. However, there are some flaws that need mentioning. There are several misspellings and other grammatical errors, as well as the MC's name being different in one line than in the rest of the story - honest mistakes by the author that can be easily fixed but which drags the overall rating down from 4 stars to 3. The notion of the MC being completely fearless leaving with a complete stranger that she senses is creepy, is not very realistic but rather foolish and makes it a bit hard to like or understand the MC. Having said that, I still buy it, because I compare it with victims in horror movies who go down into the basement even though we all know they're going to get killed. You may not go down in the basement yourself, but hey, it's just a story, right? This is a fantasy story after all, werewolves do not exist in real life either, so let's just go with it and see what happens, was my thought on the matter. It drives the story forward.

I can really recommend this novella if you're into werewolves, romance and action-packed stories. I will definately read the rest of the series myself.

Oh what can I say about this book........ Not much... Just really TERRIBLE! This Series was terrible but as for this book I hated the characters they where so stupid expecially "Danielle", just so naive and gullible and just plain stupid. "Yes, I'm about to head out with a creepy looking person from the bar I visit every night to watch drunk people!" how stupid can you be! - that right there would lay out how unattractive she is. TIP for the Author ( people don't find dumbass people attractive) didn't like the story everything was boring and I hated having to spend money on the rest of it so that I could finish the story ( books were extremely short ) because I hate starting a book without finishing it, even if it is shit only cuz I still like to give it a shot for a rating.

Who ever edited this book did a shitty job of doing so. Gosh I just can't explain how terrible this book was, just a waste of time, ( one shity sex scene out of all 3 books, in book 2 ) feelings weren't described or felt in this book at all besides " You are my mate" seriously? Why did I ever pick up this book, so blah and plane, absolutely hated it! I wish I could get my money back.

All this being said I can't even rate the others, so this is my one review for ALL 3 books.

I appreciated the pace of the story and the somewhat sinister plot. However, I didn’t like any of the poorly defined cardboard characters. Danica is a lazy narcissist who fancies herself a comedian.

Not too bad a start to a series but it needs a lot of work. I’m not sure I’ll continue it but leaning toward not. The story needs better character development and maybe a sub-plot, or two, to move the story along and hold one’s interest. I suspect maybe the story may get interesting the further you read but it has been my experience with novellas that introduce a story to either suck you in or turn you off with rarely any middle ground or fence riding.

On my Were Scale of Hotness, 2 stars.

Seriously! ?

The cover looked awesome and I ended up expecting more, how disappointing.
So here we have the main female character who knows its inappropriate to have an affair- no scratch that, to date your boss. But doesn't know the rule "don't hope in a stranger's car."

Let's not stop there, she goes to a party full of predators and monsters yet her gut must have been asleep or expired because none of her insticts told her to run until it was too late.

Finally she escapes but days later the same person who drove her to the party pops up claiming her as his mate. And her only show of anger was scratch and "Just eat me alredy, but make it less painful and start from the head."
Honestly where were the angry tears and the emotions.
"How could you do this to me... you ruined my life... you sent me there to die and you expect me to love you?" These things should hve atleast been said but instead the girl ends up loving the big house she is brought to and the big room she would sleep in. Her whole life has been changed like an hour glass but she doesn't seem to feel the effect of everything which means that as a reader I was sad to be let down.

Quick read where I couldn’t help but wonder how unrealistic this all was. And I’m not talking about the werewolves.
Danica meets a stranger in a bar who gives her a bad feeling, yet when he invites her to a private uptown party, acting very weird about why her, she decides to go with him? That has to be the most stupid and unbelievable thing to have ever happened in a book.
Suddenly, everyone wants her dead, except for her mate, of course. But she is set on fighting him. Until she sees his house and that he clearly has money.

Danica struck me as a dumb character that I found very uninteresting. She trusts all the wrong people and gets herself into something she clearly doesn’t want. Until the guy turns out to be rich, because that makes everything better.

And the guy seems very inconsiderate. He turned her into a werewolf because he fell in love with her at first scent but when Danica isn’t happy with having been turned into a monster, he doesn’t really seem to care. He is taking her to his house anyway.

Honestly, it didn’t made me want to ever read the sample of the second book

I think my opinion will always be tainted by the fact that these books are just an excuse to get you to pay more for a book. It's a better deal to get 1 quality book for 7.99 then pay for 4 or 5, 70 page books at 2.99 each.

That being said, this one started out OK. The main characters name slight changes after the first time(assuming author error) and she is kind of an idiot. Who leaves a bar with a male stranger who gives you the creeps?

A short novella that hopes it catches you enough to buy the rest of the connected books. Some people hate that but others don't mind because it does give you an idea if you like the writer and where the story is going. Danny doesn't make the smartest decisions all the time but she is a scrappy person who isn't going to give up without a fight.

I might be tempted to read more of the story.

Wwhhhaaaa????? O.o

I would have given it 5 stars except, it wasn't a book at all, only a few chapters. But then again, I suppose that is the purpose so the reader will WANT to "buy" the rest. Well, you've hooked me. So when do I get the rest Mr. Flynn??? Signed, Waiting.... Impatiently.

Plot less wandering

Romance requires a good plot device for the couple to get together. This...has none. There is no explanation and the story stops halfway through on a cliff hanger, demanding the reader continue. Sadly, nothing is particularly stands out enough to continue. And the world building is scattered without any real direction.

very flat characters.

This book could be cute, any maybe interesting. But this author seems to editorialize the story without any content to round out the characters. This book does not engage the other senses at all. There is no sense of touch, taste, smell, or feeling. The book is flat.

Great Book

But I think all of your books are great! I get lost in them and don't want to leave. I wish I could afford all of them. Okay! A little bit scary at the beginning, but who wouldn't love a gentle someone saving the heroine? Wonderful cast of characters. Your writing is totally memorizing. Thanks for what you do for us! I see you!

A freebie download. Short. Its hard to really say much since it was so brief. The good, it was entertaining. The bad, talk about a lady making a severely bad choice. Compelling enough to move to book 2. Fun.

An excellent opener!

Danielle stumbles upon some seriously messed up stuff while trying to enjoy her evening. Now she’s on the run from those creeps. Who can she trust? This starts fast and keeps on moving. Worth picking up the series!

Great short stories

Mac writes amazing short stories. Not exactly HEA, endings but not total cliffhangers either.. Danica has met her match in an unlikely way. Guess you could say she went to the wrong party with the wrong guy,,, but it may turn out for the best.

A 45 page taste listed as a book.

Well enough written, but a serialized book, which is the least liked form of literature for me. Oh, and it's a cliffhanger, of course, way to make me know if less.
