🂱 When I started reading this book, I thought it was all about 𝐌𝐀𝐍 𝐏𝐎𝐖𝐄𝐑 all over the world - but it was rooted so deep that even I messed up with my thought process. There is something unsettling. Something dark. This book demands 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞, 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 and in return it replies back with 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐛𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬. 🎶
🂱 The book begins with some strange phenomenon in Vilasnagar, India, something is affecting Indian minds, they are becoming less humanic -Junior Scientist Aditya and Social Worker Shalini's investigation take them to some extraordinary unknown force that is piling up the societal fabrics. Unable to think much about anything, they both came to inform the complexity of the situation to Professor Mehta, the DM of Kanpur. ✨
🂱 I felt the complexities in 𝐀𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐲𝐚 - his inner turmoil is beautifully done. Not too flawed for a villain or too smooth to be a hero. He feels grounded. But more than anything else, he feels alive. 🎯
🂱 Is it about 𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲? It feels it is gathering us to check the dangers of unchecked evolution. Surprisingly the author handles his genuineness and empathy at the same time in a unique way. This is not your fast paced open narrative that growls towards you rather the plot makes you engage with the characters, so that you can handle them in your mind. 📽️

It burns slowly, so if you are expecting a fast paced and a heavy plot then maybe it'll drive your interest a little less. 🕊️

At the focal point of this disturbing change are Professor Mehta and his students, Aditya and Shalini. What starts as a scholarly curiosity turns into a frenzied quest to discover if this new evolution leap is a miracle or an arms-length development. Singh's prose feeds on that ambiguity. There are VIP books and then there are what I call VPG books- Visceral, Passionate and Gut wrenching. 'The Last Man Standing' by Naveen Singh is one. Written cleverly, this sci-fi thriller unfolds like a fist around your gut. It squeezes you slowly until you are gasping for more: more drama, more violence, more thrill. And Singh delivers it all.
In a small town near Kanpur, ordinary people have started to develop extraordinary powers. Along with their powers comes a devastating hunger. A mechanic, a software engineer, a housewife, they all have started to see and do things that would ordinarily be out of their power. Singh has described this dilemma in quite interesting terms:
'I hear voices in my head, Karan. Something strange is happening to me. I don't feel like eating, yet I eat. I eat huge amounts of food. I am compelled to gorge. Yet it feels like I am constantly being drained out of my physical strength, though I am gaining miraculously on my intelligence level. My mind seems to enjoy my physical decay. I...I don't know what to do I am terrified. What the fudge is happening to me?'
I particularly loved the scene between the housewife and the maid. I also loved the part that until now, sci-fi thrillers were usually set in metros. By setting this story in a known milieu, SIngh has played his hand well.
So what's the secret behind this power that comes with hunger? A virus? An alien invasion? An evil entity? Well, read the book to find out more. I am not going to tell you everything here.
I loved how the author has set up plot pieces in the first chapter. It has almost everything: a powerful threat looming large, senior officers denying the reality, a guy and a girl tasked to find the secret with an on and off relationship. The author has added all the required spices and stirred the pot with his quill.
Singh has balanced the thrill portion of the story with a complicated love track between Aditya and Shalini, two people who are investigating this strange happening. I like how the author has handled the dynamics of this complex relationship:
"She shot him a furious glance as Aditya lit a cigarette and puffed on it hungrily. Wreathed in smoke, he held her gaze for a moment before looking away without a word. When she could no longer stand the blatant disregard for her feelings, she took a step forward, wrenched the smouldering cigarette out of his hands, and put it out."
Singh exerts a tight control on the elements of the story, balancing pace with the emotions, walking a tight rope of keeping reader's interest in the story while helping the main characters evolve at a comfortable pace. He skillfully sets the characters up, pushing them into twists and turns slowly but surely.
The author doesn't shy away from violence. Very early in the story there is a scene where a burglar kills a woman. Singh goes all out, letting his character loose into the world. He committs to the story and doesn't turn back. He also doesn't dress up his words. Since this character is the negative lead, the violence is understandable.
Have a look: He let out a horrible laugh like shards ofbroken glass scattering on the floor, and then, all of a sudden, the haze cleared. The spell broke as he jolted back to his senses. The woman lay in a tangled heap of broken ribs and blood-smattered flesh."
The Last Man Standing is an emotionally charged thriller that compromises on nothing- neither human drama nor the slick thrills it promises. The drama and the thrill move at the same pace and that's always good for a thriller. The story is set at a relentless pace and doesn't let you put the book down. Pick it up for the weekend read.

"The Last Man Standing" by Naveen Singh is one book with an amazing story line and plots inscribed with the wonders of what modern technologies and medicines are capable of, makes them quite scary to be honest. The book revolves around a professor who created this potion to enhance the human brain but before developing it fully it somehow slips off his hand landing in a place during a feast, and many becomes a victim to it. What happens when they find out what happens to them? How would they take?
What happens when a corrupted mind is given power? A potion with only one way to end it all, who's gonna play the hero in all this? Will it truly end or was it a start of something bigger?
A sinister hit a small town, was it too much for them to solve? Who all needs to die to end it all? Will it ever stop or was Garima able to end it all with her? Was it out of humanity or quench for revenge that she does it all?
I truly wish the book had a second part of it or hopefully the author would be kind enough to give us one cos I for one am eagerly wanting to read more...

This book was very quick to read. If you are into books like The Power of Your Subconscious mind, Self Hypnosis, Autobiography of a Yogi then I swear you would find this book quite intriguing. I believe a detailed research has been made on brain and ambiguos ways in which a human brain functions. Thoroughly impressed by the narrative, information shared and above all the mystery involved in the plot.
