DI Munro & DS West #1-9

Munro and West Mysteries: Books 1–9

Rate this book
Nine sharp, sly, and satisfyingly dark Scottish mysteries. One unforgettable detective duo.

DI James Munro never planned to come out of retirement. And DS Charlie West didn’t expect to be paired with a grumpy old Scot who thinks chamomile tea should be outlawed. She's dealt with a lot worse. But the murders keep coming — and someone has to solve them.

A girl found dead in the woods. A man pushed off a cliff. A confession that doesn’t add up. Munro’s not interested in small talk. West’s not here to make the tea. Together, they trudge through wind, rain, and the messier corners of human nature in search of answers.

There’s no flashy tech, no dramatic shootouts — just sharp minds, sharper tongues, and the occasional whisky.

For readers who like their crime fiction with bite, grit, and a touch of gallows humour.

Detective Inspector James Munro
Sixtyish, sarcastic, and not quite as retired as he’d like to be. Stubborn as a mule, but always five steps ahead. Wears walking boots to work, doesn’t suffer fools, and believes tea should come with three sugars and a hard stare.

Detective Sergeant Charlie West
Book-smart, street-smart, and not afraid to go toe-to-toe with Munro. She’s the kind of copper who keeps her boots in the boot and her opinions on her sleeve. Fast with a comeback, and even faster on the uptake.

They bicker. They clash. But they get results.

Small-town Scotland. The bits tourists don’t visit.
Rain-lashed streets. Mountains looming in the distance. Locals who say nothing — but watch everything. These are the kinds of places where a body can lie undiscovered for weeks, and everyone’s got a skeleton or two in the cupboard. The weather’s grim. The humour’s drier. And justice comes one dogged step at a time.

Pete Brassett is the author of the best-selling series of detective novels based in and around his native Scotland featuring James Munro and Charlie West.

Following the publication of his debut novel, 'Clam Chowder at Lafayette and Spring', Pete ventured into the world of crime fiction tackling issues like PTSD, religious scandal, and manic depression with the novels 'Kiss the Girls', 'Prayer for the Dying' and 'The Girl From Kilkenny', before moving onto subject matter a little closer to home.

The forging of the Munro and West relationship begins with a fractious encounter in east London where a dissolute West, struggling with personal problems and misogynistic colleagues, is mentored by Munro who, recognising her potential, hoodwinks her into joining him back in Scotland where she flourishes as a first-class, yet ultimately flawed, detective.

Engaging characters and plots. Pitched on the lighter spectrum between gritty and cozy, this mystery series has grisly deaths, twisty crimes, a close team of detectives, and a very nice line in banter and dark humour. Munro is the veteran, guiding West and her team to greater results without ever getting pedantic or micro managing. And at the same time, without lecturing or exposition, educating the reader in the ways and means of reading crime scenes and developing criminal cases. The stories barrel along easily, the team dynamic is nicely balanced, and the good guys generally win. A thoroughly enjoyable series.

The writing improved as the books progressed but the storylines still were a little weak. I didn't feel the characters were ever fully developed and there was sometimes too much going on that seems unrelated. I know this is a writing style among mysteries but the divergent stories sometimes took too long to come together. Still enjoyable reading, just doesn't grab you IMHO.

Could be a PBS Sunday night series!

Well-written series with plot twists clever enough to derail “who done it” theories from the most experienced murder/mystery aficionados. Great balance of characters creating an “office family”, dysfunctional, but enduring.
