Traumata is a powerful exploration of trauma, femininity, and spirituality, drawing you into a profoundly resonant and thought-provoking journey. It challenges conventional notions through vivid storytelling and poetry, making it a must-read for anyone seeking a raw and transformative narrative. Though the theme resonating with everyone would be GBV, I believe it brings out other vital themes of childhood trauma and generational trauma. These two intersections have far-reaching effects that we carry even into our much older years of maturity. Stories like Sonia Naidoo’s are just the start of this vital conversation. Men, too, are deeply impacted by trauma, even if they are often taught to suppress or deny it. The phrase 'hurt people hurt people' rings especially true here: unhealed wounds can perpetuate cycles of harm. Instead of focusing solely on teaching women to stay safe, we must also create space for men to recognise their pain, embrace vulnerability, and seek healing. Only then can we begin to break generational patterns and truly foster a safer, more compassionate world for all.

This book is like holding a heart in your hand. Some pages still pulse with a rhythmic beat, while others will make you weep. It is a story carefully ripped from a chest, bound together with the kind of love that is remnant of childlike innocence and pain. These words will echo in your own heart long after the last page is turned.

My heart is wrenched and at the same time soaring with love and pride for the author. Wrenched because of the darkness, angst, fear , loneliness, bereavement that she went through as a young girl, and proud because of her tenacity which she embraced to propel herself out of a hopeless situation.

There are traumatic experiences in the book which readers may relate to and connect with the author. In such instances, and united in trauma, one will be grateful for this memoir and the author’s life’s lessons. Not many have the courage to write about such matters, and Naidoo does this with admirable rawness and honesty.

This book is a work of art: glorious and mesmerizing, not only because of the illustrations but the narrative, the poems, the well thoughtful layouts, and the pov’s. It is a novella which pumps to life and its soul emerges the moment one opens and reads the first page to the very last page and line.
Exquisitely written, it is unforgettable and a joy to re-read in the future. This is one book I will keep forever!
