Ryker has been asked to look for governor's missing daughter. Ske's been missing for a few months and Ryker is asked to keep things quiet.
This is an action-packed read,it has been descriptively written, and every character has their own part to play. There is quite a lot of violence. this book can be read as a standalone.

I would like to thank #NetGalley #BoldwoodBooks and the author #RobSinclair for my ARC of#BurningGirls in exchange for an honest review.
This is the latest book in the James Ryker series, it's book 14, and it is another fabulously addictive instalment.
The book starts very dramatically with Marshall, a US soldier, explaining his predicament that nearly led to his death. Another dramatic event is the bombing of a US tech building.
Ryker is asked to come over to the US to look into the disappearance of a young woman, a Governor's daughter. Sher has been missing for several months. He is asked to keep things quiet; well, if you have read any of these books before, you will know that quiet is not exactly part of Ryker's character. He attracts trouble, and this keeps not only him, but also the reader, on their toes.
This series is an action-packed one. I have not read all the books, but each one is a story in its own right. The author gives the details that are pertinent to Ryker and his past when necessary. This means they can be read as stand-alone. But, with all series, it is obviously more beneficial to read them in order, as you get a much better grasp on the character and his personality.
In this book, Ryker is looking for a missing person, but this also links to the bombing. Using the general unrest of the US at the moment, he delves into the radical right-wing activists and white supremacists.
Ryker is joined by others; they have their own parts to play, and they are also dragged into danger. The plots are complex, and the author keeps them clear and concise. They are riveting as a time element soon becomes evident. Lives of millions are at stake, but how far will Ryker and others have to go to prevent catastrophic events from erupting?
If you are a fan of multi-agency thrillers that have fast-paced, adrenaline-fuelled, complex plots, extreme views and are crime thrillers, then this is a series you definitely need. Another brilliant book in a fabulous series that I would definitely recommend.
My gratitude to Boldwood Books for the early access to this ARC copy and also thank NetGalley. 3.5 stars for me with 4 stars for the action.
On the whole I am giving it three and a half stars. If you come for nonstop action and a familiar but satisfying lead then this will deliver. I have read some books by Rob and he knows how to set a pace and keep it moving. James Ryker, the protagonist is in his element here as a pragmatic and bruised former intelligence operator who walks a thin line between ruthless and just. The set pieces are vivid and the book moves briskly from one confrontation to the next. There are sequences that made me tense up and a handful that I read with my adrenaline racing.
Where the book shines is in the momentum and attitude. Rob writes clean sentences and drops you into the scene without fuss. The investigation premise is straightforward and compelling enough. The story that sends Ryker to Atlanta to find a missing girl, governor's daughter and then pits him against an ex special operations man who refuses to stay dead creates a strong central engine. When the emotional stakes work they land. There are scenes that give James Ryker real moral weight and remind you why you want to follow him through danger after danger.
The book has some loose moments. The plot leans on familiar thriller tropes so if you come looking for something wholly original you might be frustrated. Some twists are telegraphed and a few supporting characters feel like they exist mostly to move James along rather than to surprise him or us. The antagonist s motivations at times read as broad instead of layered which reduced a few confrontations from tense to merely functional. The dialogue can occasionally slip into bluntness which slows the novel s emotional resonance.
I admired Rob's ability to sustain a high level of tension for long stretches and to deliver satisfying action scenes that are easy to visualize. I also appreciated the moments of quiet where James's past and present bump up against each other. Those quieter pages are what give the book its best texture. Overall this is a solid entry in the series that fans will likely enjoy and newcomers can jump into if they like muscular thrillers with heart. Three and a half stars is where I land because the book is entertaining and well written but not quite ambitious enough to rise above the larger field.
14th in the Ryker series but easy to read as a standalone thriller.
The action starts immediately in this and we quickly find a mission scuppered by Xavis impulsivity. It leaves a few questions to begin with and Ryker, at this point, hasn't managed to secure the intel they were after. As one job ends another begins.
The short sharp chapters keep the momentum of the story as we travel on Rykers missions with him. He's good at it job but it's not always easy! Is the bombing and abduction connected or is that a huge coincidence? There's a lot going on and it's going to take some unravelling to get to the bottom of it all.
Meg was a good and interesting addition. Ryker seems good at getting on by himself but the chance at getting answers from someone who appeared to have reliable sources looked to be good. She lacked experience and instinct that Ryker seems to have so she ultimately seems misguided and I'll prepared despite her eagerness. She has a good relationship with Ryker despite the very short time she's known him and ultimately a link of hers helps Ryker on his way.
Caleb is a very dangerous character with his own agenda dressed up as something else. He seems to be working with others but that is short-lived as he's rapidly reaching his endgame. It's like a game of cat and mouse between him and Ryker.
I liked the fast pace of this and that things were not as neatly tied up at the dock yard. Ryker is skilled but somewhat clumsy too. I like that he's flawed and doesn't wrap things up easily. He gets the job done but it seems to take a piece of him as he goes.
Burning State by Rob Sinclair is recommended - for the right reader. James Ryker, former intelligence agent, is sent to Atlanta, Georgia, to find a missing governor's daughter. When bombs begin going off in buildings, Ryker ends up pursuing an old adversary, ex-special ops agent Caleb Marshall. Marshal was presumed dead, but now he is out for vengeance.
This features nonstop action and an abundance of violence. The conspiracy is huge so the stakes are equally high as Marshall is trying to destroy the USA. I haven't read the other books in this series, but after reading Burning State I felt I should have listened to myself after the last Sinclair novel and avoided reading another one. It's too violent and over-the-top. Additionally, Sinclair has made up some "radical right-wing factions" as the enemy in this outing. At this point, I can't even try to set the needed amount of disbelief aside in the current climate to accept this plot point as it is totally unbelievable. 2.5 for me, rounded up.
Thanks to Boldwood for providing me with an advance reader's copy via NetGalley. My review is voluntary and expresses my honest opinion. http://www.shetreadssoftly.com/2025/1...
I have read a few of Rob Sinclair's books which I have thoroughly enjoyed. While this is the 14th book in the James Ryker series, I have only read a few of them and I think this one works well as a standalone especially if you like relentless, fast-paced action.
If you’re a fan of the James Ryker series, you’ll know what to expect but if not, he’s a brilliant, highly capable former intelligence agent who constantly gets pulled into world-ending plots. This time, his simple mission is to find a missing governor’s daughter however it quickly turns into something altogether different and deadly.
The book is packed full of intrigue, action and violence. It has that addictive, "just one more chapter" quality that makes it fly by. I really enjoyed the story; it's a classic thriller with a protagonist you can't help but root for.
Overall, if you like your thrillers gritty and explosive, this is one to pick up as are Rob Sinclair's other books.
Many thanks to the author, Boldwood Books and NetGalley for enabling me to read and share my thoughts of this, an excellent addition to this brilliant series.
I would have done better to have read a few of the earlier books in series, but the story still grabbed me and held on tight. Definitely riveting. Ryker has a prosthetic mask to wear because of extensive burns to his face and elsewhere in the course of his career but doesn't let it slow him down at all. He works with others who have similar agendas in the US despite his home country being Great Britain. Dramatic! I requested and received a temporary uncorrected proof copy from Boldwood Books via NetGalley. Book 14 in the James Ryker series and this time Ryker is sent to Atlanta, Georgia where the daughter of a billionaire is missing. This could be read as a stand-alone but there are references to and events referred to from previous books although these are explained adequately for anyone new to the series.
Briefly, posing as a PI it doesn’t take Ryker long before he is involved in a vicious fight in a bar where his new friend and reporter Megan is seriously hurt. Meanwhile a masked killer is going about setting off bombs in offices. Ryker finds himself pitted against an old adversary ex-special ops agent Caleb Marshall.
With almost non stop and violent action this is another fast paced Ryker thriller. A massive conspiracy aimed at bringing down the USA and only Ryker can stop it. An enjoyable and entertaining espionage thriller. Great read.
James Ryker returns in another action packed thriller. A former intelligence agent, he gets called into dangerous operations that others can't or won't do. In this case he is called over to Atlanta in Georgia where there is political unrest. Under the auspices of being a private investigator hunting for the missing daughter of the Governor of Georgia he is involved in trying to find out who is behind a spate of violent protests across the state. Very quickly he finds himself against an organised gang with a large financial backing who are determined to bring the American Government down irrespective of how many people lose their lives. This, as all the previous Ryker books are, is fast paced and full of action and suspense. It gets a bit predictable at times however it's a book you don't want to put down. Another winner for this wonderful author who never lets you down.
Burning State is a high-stakes thriller that takes James Ryker on a dangerously wild ride. His mission is to locate a governor's missing daughter. The investigation and location of the woman takes a turn when a dead man returns to the land of the living. He's hellbent on vengeance and Ryker is drawn into the pursuit.
This book is full of action, intrigue, and suspense. I love the author's writing style and the conversational qualities of the characters. The characters are introduced and developed smoothly, and the descriptive nature of the storytelling has me right in the middle of the story. I was engaged from the start and the author does a great job keeping the reader entertained and on the edge of their seat.
This is the 14th book of the series, and the only one I've read. I will be going back and starting this series at the beginning.
James Ryker, former intelligence agent, is given a new official assignment – find the Governor of Georgia’s missing daughter. He’s also tasked with an unofficial one - find the lone wolf who set off a bomb in Atlanta, with no information and no official help. He meets with a journalist who agrees to use her contacts to help him meet with local far right-wing groups. But that doesn’t go too well. Fortunately, the journalist’s sister-in-law works for GBI and she, very reluctantly, agrees to help him.
Really enjoyable story, full of action from the start – it does have some gruesome moments though! James Ryker is a quirky character with a nice line in sarcastic comments; he does get caught up in some dangerous situations but always manages to escape somehow.
Thanks to Net Galley and Boldwood Books for an ARC for my honest review.
Rob has certainly pulled back on the usual and previously brilliantly brutal, ghost spy world of James Ryker in this one. He’s been reduced to an unarmed PI for most of the book with a pretty predictable storyline, which only ramps up at the end and then is over in a flash. Not the standard of the previous books and I’ve read and loved all of them, thinking this was more of the assassins and spies, rather than the rednecks and a couple of brawls. Please return James to his previous life and world that we know and love with Winter and the other shadowy organisations. We don’t want ‘James Reacher’ when James Ryker is so much better!
Burning State by Rob Sinclair is the 8th book in the James Ryker series and the first book I have read within this series and I loved it. It was every you need within a book, it was fast paced from the very beginning, with lots of action, well, it was full of action!!!and full of great twists and turns throughout and the best bit, was the main character James Ryker was excellent!!! (where have I been?) Burning State was a great page turner.
I love the way this author Rob writes and every book I have read I am always enjoyed, so I was surprised I missed this series! But, I highly recommend this book and I found it easy and had no problems to get into this series. So a great standalone book as well.
Burning State is a high-stakes, action packed, brilliantly written complex story about James Ryker and his dangerous missions.
James Ryker, former intelligence agent is sent out on a mission to find a governor's missing daughter. While also dealing with a bombing and an ex-special agent who was presumed dead.
First time reading James Ryker and I enjoyed his character and his tendency to attract trouble. The story and some background is given in the book, so it is easy to follow. The pacing is perfect, the action is strong and the story is captivating. Will definitely reas more James Ryker books!
Thank you Netgalley and Boldwood Books for this eARC. All opinions are entirely my own.
James Ryker is brought in to investigate a missing person who might be linked to a domestic US terror cell. Trouble is, Ryker is not been given the full picture and the reality is bigger and more dangerous than he can ever have imagined. I’ve read and enjoyed quite a few of the Ryker series, but this one didn’t really work for me. Told in third person (Ryker) and in first person by the main protagonist, this switching of perspective was a tad confusing until you “tuned in” to the appropriate narrative. There were also far too many times when you (as a reader) thought “hang on, why don’t you”, and Ryker……doesn’t. Far too many bits of logic missing and loose ends. Didn’t grip me like I hoped.
Summary here: It was a fun read, with no boring parts at all. If you like political intrigue, high-stakes action, a bit of violence (but no real gore), then this is for you. If you’re looking for something a bit deeper, it has it's moments (divisions, hatred, being let down by government, corruption), but it doesn’t dwell. This is more an action book than anything else.
All in all, the novel delivered all that it promised: high-stakes action.
Thank you to the publisher and Rachel’s Random Resources for an Advanced Reader Copy in exchange for an honest review.
Burning State by Rob Sincleir is book 14 in The James Ryker Series, published by Boldwood Books. This is the next installment and yes, there are cross-overs to previous books. I recommend to read the series in order. James Ryker, former Intelligence Agent is taskes to find the missing daughter of the Governor, all while meeting a ghost. A ghost who's very much alive and becomes a danger to his mission and himself. A fast paced, action packed, complex, raw and gritty read that gives all the feels. This installment deserves all the stars, I recommend the book and the series.
Thanks to @netgalley @robsinclairauthor & @theboldbookclub for the ARC.
This is book 14 in the #JamesRyker series and is, once again, a non-stop action thriller albeit this time set in Atlanta, Georgia where a massive conspiracy is taking place to bring down the American government. It helped that I had read all the other books so I knew of Ryker's backstory as it doesn't give much away in this one, and there isn't much character development for him either, which actually keeps him real. The writing style is fast-paced throughout and keeps you hooked. I can't wait for book 15!
Ryker is back !! This book as usual for Ryker is full of non stop violence, killings, injustices, bomb attacks, conspiracies and American politics. Mr Sinclair never holds back with Ryker and this is no exception. I just love this series for exactly this reason. It is fast paced and a great page turner which although may not be to everyone's taste, it certainly takes you to another world. Overall 4.5*
Thanks to Netgalley/Boldwood Books for the ARC to review
James Ryker goes to America to find a kidnapped daughter of an American politician. Full of action and intrigue James Riker is an all action hero in the vein of Jack Reacher. A good cast of chracters in this well plotted book. I love this series. Thanks to Boldwood Books and Netgalley for this review ARC.
Excellent addition to the series, and it’s great to have our hero back. In this episode there’s still another conspiracy in play and through many action sequences. I received an advance copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher and voluntarily provided an honest review.
I do like a good action story and this was certainly it. Think Reacher and you’re on the same wavelength. I have read a couple of this series now and they get better and better as they go on. Ryker in this one is asked to track down a missing woman, her family are worried for her and Ryker believes she’s fallen foul of a group she had dealings with years ago, one that is now threatening the USA.
This is non-stop action from the get-go, although the opening prologue was a bit confusing for a while but soon fell into the storyline. There are a couple of people that he links with to help him in his quest, I really liked both of them and what they bought to the book.
The ending was everything you wanted, unless you’re squeamish! Great writing and story telling, action packed with a likeable sarcastic fun hero you can’t help but root for. I’m off to check out the rest of the series that I’ve missed, as this is book 14!
Another terrific ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Sinclair thriller. James Ryker is sent on a mission, ostensibly, to find a missing politician's daughter in Atlanta, shortly after a bomb has destroyed a building there. When his job turns out to be a manhunt for a deadly, home grown terrorist, he runs with the ball and with little to go on from his dark ops, off the books boss,.he fights to stop the madman. Great reading: superb suspense and riveting action. Another hit for the series.
