Didrik would do anything for his best friend, Filip, including taking pictures of Filip's dad, Johan, for a charity calendar. Naked pictures, of beautiful, irresistible, wonderful Johan, who was single-handedly responsible for Didrik's gay awakening. He was also happily married and unavailable ... until he wasn't. After losing his husband five years ago, Johan finally seems ready to move on, and as they start the charity project, everything changes. With every meeting, every conversation, every pose for the camera, the attraction between them swells and grows, until it burns hot and threatens to consume them. Their interactions, their relationship is surprisingly easy, but it's not without its challenges. The age difference for one thing. Telling Filip for another. Is their connection enough to last? Can they overcome the hurdles to get the happily ever after they deserve?
Nell Iris writes gay romance, prefers sweet over angsty, short over long, and quirky characters over alpha males. She published her first book in 2017.
Nell is an author with a day job that steals too much time from her writing, her reading, her gardening, and her crocheting. She’s an introverted tea drinker who loves her family, her books, and her home in the Swedish countryside.
Well, that was steamy! And sweet. It always takes a lot to get me on board with an age-chasm romance but this was really quite lovely. With low-angst and just some really wonderful, likable characters. I'd read more about these two.
Strike a Pose is a steamy, short novella that does what it says on the tin, though the blurb gives the impression of a slow burn evolution to their attraction that isn’t actually present. Told from Didrik’s POV, Nell Iris does a good job establishing Didrik’s connection to Johan and his history with the family. Didrik is a passionate, creative, and honest character with a very strong, confident voice that sets the tone for the story and is fun to follow. It’s very clear from the start that Didrik has it bad for Johan; considering Johan’s the reason Didrik realized he was gay and Johan is a great guy that’s never given Didrik a reason to dislike him, it makes sense that he would still have a crush on him almost two decades later. Thus, it’s also not surprising that as soon as Didrik realizes Johan is flirting with him, it green lights all the way down.
An endearing age gap romance that is way too short, Johan and Didrik are just so sweet, and naked poseing in the garden is sexy as heck. A lovely short story.
Another novella from Iris that rocks my world! It it hot? Yes! Is it sweet and romantic? Yes, but not as much as some of her other works - Best friend's father trope done well.
Strike a Pose has a bit more heat than most of the books I’ve read by Nell Iris and I loved it. It’s also longer than her recent stories. She writes fantastic short stories and this novella is also fantastic.
It’s a bit of a forbidden romance – best friend’s father but it’s not one of those that go on and on about how “we shouldn’t be doing this” – I don’t like those much.
I’d never heard of World Naked Gardening Day so I Googled it and it really is a thing. 😊 Didrik has had a crush on his best friend’s father for a long time but it’s gotten worse since Johan became a widower 5 years ago.
I loved how this story developed and the premise of a calendar for Naked Gardening Day. Nell Iris gave these two characters the HEA that they both deserved.
An advanced copy of this book was provided to me at my request but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author. I also purchased a copy after I read it.
I mean, this all comes down to whether you are cool with someone setting up their best friend and their dad (20 year age difference, 30 and 50.) I thought it was quite sweet, and I feel like Nell Iris is getting better at the short novella game.
