Lots going on, nothing really going on

This book was kind of tough because it's been so long since the last one came out. I struggled to remember everything that had happened previously so a "what's gone on before" recap section would've been nice. Stathis and Winters are off to find the alien angels that might be able to help them fight the vanhat and Collective. The mission gets hit with setback after setback. Seriously, nothing goes right for the group. Then on top of all that, Stathis decides to go off on a search and rescue mission which makes absolutely no sense. With Stathis and Winters separated, the book jumps around a bunch but nothing really good happens. Stathis deals with a massive ship filled with vanhat trying to find survivors. Winters has to deal with a traitor and spy on the ship. In the end, the book just kind of trails off. There's no big fight or anything. I'm hoping the next one is a lot better

Losing steam

This series is now running out of steam, feels forced to continue. It must be said that nothing really happens in this story. Don't hold your breath for any big reveals or action.

Each chapter alternates between Winters and Stathis primarily, with Sif featured in a few. Basic premise is Winters is taking a fleet to find help from other entities / aliens, things never work out. Not from the get go, the Vanhat/Collective are always right there chomping at their heels. It really gets much too tiresome, boring in fact - seemingly the author running out of ideas - it's rinse & repeat - run to new system, hide from enemies, try to find the spies, enemies arrive, perhaps a small battle (or not), jump to Shorr space. Again. And again.

Then we have Stathis stuck on a Repub Homestar that is infested with Vanhat & is jumping all over the place , while he behaves worse than an adolescent regarding his lust for Hakala. Come on Frisbee Jr, can that guy grow up yet? The other tiresome aspect is the whole "I'm a US Marine, I do the impossible, RAR RAR GO Team." that started being annoying after the 350th time in this book. Yeah man we get it. Go Marines.

Sif is attacked by some weird spectral vanhat assassin, she detects some other entities and that's about it.

A waste of time installment in this series. It should have been a short story and nothing more. Both Winters and Stathis are written poorly here. Winters common reply is "Fine". She's along for the ride and does nothing but second guess loyalties and ask for opinions.

Easy review: when do we get to see the next installment. :)

More seriously, lots of action, the return of beloved characters, an expansion on the fundaments of the Last Marines Universe.

Really can't wait for the next one.
