Small Town Cowboy: BWWM Romance

Rate this book
Nicki ran west to escape her ex-husband and solve a haunting. She landed in a creepy town where everything changes after sundown.
A black female ex-detective follows a call to an old white lady’s ranch.
Sam has two strapping sons and Kurt is the worst — constantly pissed off with nothing but broad shoulders and a permanent scowl underneath his cowboy hat.
It’s hate-at-first-sight when Nicki moves in.
He’s gruff. Territorial. Hotter than any of the guys back east.
They clash in every sense of the word until one romp in the hay changes everything.
Now, Nicki is way in over her head with a dangerous alpha, a small town conspiracy, and falling in love again after swearing she wouldn’t touch another man.

This is a spicy interracial romance standalone with a happily ever after ending and heat intended for adults only.

so much potential but fell short

Before I got to the third half of the book it was going to get a 3 from me. Sadly I was disappointed once I reached the middle of the plot and the end.

For one… I find it unsettling as a black woman when white men fetishize my skin. I shuddered and cringed when the male lead made compliments about her “brown skin.”

Secondly… GIRL BYE? You are telling me you came from New York, was married and lived there more than a decade and you went all the way south to leave him??? We as a reader dont even get him as a looming threat. Which sounds crazy until you read she gets threatened by the klan. Like… I rather go back to big old Apple and take my bets with my ex than the KLAN??? And the man she fell for isn’t worth it either, there isn’t enough build up or connection outside of sex to make him worth all that racism???

Plus there were a few typos and grammar issues and sadly I do ding books that have issues with that. I know not everyone now uses an editor but at least reread it or pay a few bucks for someone to skim through for it.

Idk this as a romance didn’t hit. But I could see the author do a lot more if she did thriller or mystery or both. Even that needed a bit of work but it’s not a total wash.

A little too many gaps in the story . But if you want something straight forward with a little mystery it’s a decent read.

This was a somewhat unusual book. It incorporated some suspense, mystery, spooky " things that go bump in the night", dysfunctional family units and more.
There was aot going on in the book, but to sum it up, woman leaves her job and becomes an itinerant detective. This lands her in a town which has a strong tie to racism. She battles mysterious going ons, shootings, racial tension and sexual tension while trying to solve a case.
The supporting characters add to the chaos. You know that there is something going on but you have too many potential suspects to point a finger at.
However, there is a resolution and a happily ever after ending so that made it all good in my book.
