This annual edition of the Time Out Film Guide, now updated to include over 11,500 films, covers every area of world cinema: classic silents and thirties comedies, documentaries and avant-garde films, French and Japanese cinema, Hollywood mega-productions and B-rated horror films. Time Out's strong international coverage offers award listings for the Berlin, Venice, and Cannes festivals as well as the Oscar winners since 1927. Fully cross-referenced with extensive indexes covering films by country, genre, subject, director, and star, this is the ultimate guide for movie lovers of all inclinations. Combining a wealth of practical information -- director, cast, running time, release date -- with more than two decades of authoritative analyses from Time Out reviewers, this A-to-Z directory promises honest, incisive, and informed criticism.
I really need to get a newer edition of this book -- despite ready Internet access to anything you want to know about virtually any movie, and a plethora of reviews available for free anytime, these "Time Out" guides remain essential for any hardcore film buffs, with a much great focus on "serious" films, even if that be (alas!) at the expense of lengthy coverage of 'Friday the 13th' or 'American Pie' - type stuff ad infinitum. Given that some of my favorite critics, like Jonathan Rosenbaum, have made large contributions to this series and that the books cover a wider spectrum of European and Asian art cinema than any other widely available film guides, I've always got one at my fingertips.
Really SHOULD get one that's less than 10 years old soon, though...
