In the shifting veil between light and shadow, where nature’s boundaries blur, an apex predator born of another age watches and waits.
The Saberonis doesn’t hide—it vanishes, slipping through the world like a specter of blood, bone, and unrelenting fury. It sees without being seen and hunts without leaving a trace. Now it’s on a killing spree—and Chad Mercer, Chief of Security at Evolve Enterprises, is about to discover what happens when the unseen decides to strike.
Mercer is tasked with terminating the beast before the situation spirals out of control. But someone wants it free—and the Saberonis has a head start. As he searches for answers and tracks the creature, the trail leads into the untamed wilderness of Northern California, where the boundary between predator and prey becomes dangerously vague.
Time is running out as the chase tightens and Mercer draws closer. Will he escape the jaws of fate—or become its next victim?
From the author of HOWLER, TRAGIC, Terror Lake, The Cryptid Club, and Crimson Falls comes Crypsis, a monstrous tale that plunges readers into a whirlwind of suspense, danger, and unexpected twists that won’t let go until the echo of the last shot dies.
Ed cut his teeth reading John Christopher, Tolkien, Poe, Brooks and Zelazny, and graduated to Joe Haldeman, Allen Steele, Arthur C. Clark and Jack Vance. For the last twenty years he’s done a deep dive on apocalyptic fiction, and he really enjoyed learning at the feet of Elmore Leonard, Philip K. Dick, Lawrence Block, Ray Bradbury, Carl Hiaasen, Stephen King, Joe Lansdale, and F. Paul Wilson. His recent publications include Hell Creek, Too Much Grit, The Cryptid Club, Keepers of the Flame, Quick Sands, Sandbagged, Dogs Get Ten Lives, Barracuda Swarm, Dinosaur Red, Drop Off, and Jurassic Ark. His sea thrillers, The Breach and Shadow of the Abyss were Amazon #1 Best Sellers and the audio version of The Breach was a #1 Hot New Release. His other novels include Throwback, Sea Tremors, Primeval Valley, AWAKE, The Black Death of Babylon, and HOAXERS. He lives on Long Island with his wife Dawn, and their daughter Samantha.
The entire complex is four acres, yet in that space we have a multi level lab, sprawling grounds (well kept), and two layers of chain link fencing. But then there wild woods, which makes way for a redwood forest. And, later, mountains.
The cryptid is a joke. Its coloring is red, white, and blue. Described as a massive cat-like hybrid with two-foot long saber teeth. It moves too fast to be killed, yet misses every time it lunges for one of the “companions” Oh yeah, it’s also invisible.
The author is smitten with similes, and uses them over and over again. The pacing is slow. However, the final chapters are enticingly prolonged. I did rather enjoy the author teasing us with an ending, only to be denied.
The author has wit and uses it frequently. But overall the novel is a dud.
