Can their foundation for forever be built on a second chance?
I'm Dominic Calder, and I'm fighting to win back the love of my life.
Luna is my best friend's sister, my first and only love, and the one I hurt the most. Now, years later, I'm back in Savannah, a renowned architect with one to win my woman back!
I get the chance when I'm contracted to build one of the biggest hospitals in the city. The catch, or is it a perk? Luna and I are partners on this project.
She's brilliant and captivating. Her expertise in hospital regulations is unmatched. As we clash over designs and decisions, the walls between us start to crumble.
But the pain I caused her young heart still lingers in her eyes.
Luna isn't ready to forgive or forget. She’s guarding herself fiercely, and I have my work cut out for me.
I'm not giving up this time. I’m going to prove to her that we’re not just best in class professionally, but also in life and forever.
Best In Class is a heartbreaking, angsty romance that features the following
🌸 Second Chance 🌸 Brother's Best Friend 🌸 First Love 🌸 Enemies to lovers 🌸 Workplace (Architects) 🌸 Other Woman Drama 🌸 Billionaire (Heroine) 🌸 Betrayal & Grovel 🌸 No Cheating 🌸 Complete Standalone
Why do I bother attempting to read Maya’s books anymore? They’re all the same. Poorly written nonsense. To be honest, what do you expect from someone who publishes a new book seemingly every month?. An fmc who is a complete and utter doormat and an mmc with zero personality. Let’s toss in the best “friend” who insists you “forget” that he cheated because it happened a long time ago. Excuse me? If I ever had a “friend” who bitched at me to forgive an ex’s cheating and take him back, we wouldn’t be friends any longer. Note to self - stop giving terrible authors a chance only to be disappointed every. time. Last book I’ll ever read from this woman.
The most anticipated story in the Savannahs best series Dominic and Luna story. Due to be released on the 21st September and one you are going to want to add to the TBR list right now. This a rare betrayal book where you are going to feel for both the betrayer and the betrayed. Ten years ago, Dom broke Luna’s heart. Two years ago, he came back to win her heart back when he realised he could no longer live without her. To say he is not having much luck is an understatement. You will discover the reason Dom did what he did and now that I think about it what he didn’t do as well. My heart actually bleed for Dom when he felt forced to make the choice he did, I also got why he did it. As with all of Maya’s books this is so much more than a second chance romance. If you read it and that is all you take from it you will not be disappointed. If you read a little deeper the book is also about social classes, race, addiction, self-esteem and self-worth and so much more. If you are anything like me, you already love Dom, and this book is only going to confirm you were right along. Make no mistake Dom did betray Luna and the shocking part he was not alone in betraying her. We have all witnessed Luna’s pain, add into that a further betrayal from Dom in the present and what you have is a perfect storm. Dom’s redemption is one of the best I have read. The way he has Luna’s back and slowly makes his way back to her is magical. His persistence in the face of Luna’s sass had me laughing when I wasn’t crying into my wine glass. If all of that was not enough, we also get a peek into the life and mind of Lev, Luna’s brother and Dom’s best friend. His story was also heartbreaking to read. As with all Maya’s books you get a bonus epilogue make sure you read it.
What I loved: I loved Dom(H) and how much he loved Luna(h). The banter between them was great. The way he told the men that she was the one in charge had me smiling. Love a man who knows a woman’s worth. Also, loved how close they were to Dom’s mom.
What I didn’t like: I wanted more of a closure when it came to Luna’s parents. I needed to see her father suffer and her mother get the help she needed.
***Major Spoilers/ Details/Triggers: H acts like he is cheating on the h because her dad threatened him, Some ow drama to make h jealous. H and h grew up together. They start a relationship but when the h’s father finds out he threatens the H to end it. H makes it look like he cheated on the h when she comes to visit him. h upset says some mean things and leaves. Ten years later, the H and h are working on a project together. H is supposed to supervise the h since she is a woman. h is still mad about the H cheating. H is trying to get back with the h. H uses another woman to make the h jealous. H hasn’t been with anyone since he has been back in town. Finally, after working together and going on a trip together h lets her guard down and they start a relationship again. When h’s dad tells her about how he threatened the H, the h gets upset because the H didn’t tell her. H goes to the h and tells her he was afraid. h takes him back and they take the relationship slow. They finally get a HEA with him proposing.
Final thoughts: I really enjoyed this book. I really hope Lev gets a book.

pretty boring and vanilla - different type of MMC than Alden normally writes
Book ends at 78%. This book is — well, boring and I started skimming scenes. Just really hard to get in to. By 50% most of the issues had been worked out so it was basically reading a rom com for the last 30% of the book.
The way Dom and Luna were portrayed in earlier books in this series made me think the tension would be high and explosive with two strong lead characters butting heads on the project constantly. But we didn’t get any of that, at all. Truly disappointing.
What we get is a luke warm MMC that started the first chapter off strong and just… fizzled out. The MFC is pretty aggressive sexually and non sexually. Two of the spicy scenes are almost direct copy pastes of each other involving bjs with the MFC taking the lead. The MMC never really takes the lead - he’s a “puppy on a leash” as they describe him. While I don’t enjoy toxicity in the male characters with no actual character growth - I still enjoy a man that takes charge and is growly and possessive and a bit dominating in a respectful way lol Dom was not that.
All in all - the actual conflict was stupid imo and could’ve easily been communicated way earlier —- but everyone moved past it pretty quickly. Both characters tried to make each other jealous - and the MMCs reasoning was utterly stupid. I’m not sure how this book was even 325 pages. Too long for how little actually happened.
The book focuses a lot on misogyny, sexism, racism, DEI, drug addiction, cheating, and topics like, women besting men in the workplace. Almost enough that it over shadows any romance.
While the book’s boring, and lacks any true enemies to lovers events and developments, I can appreciate that It’s not Alden’s usual format, with a toxic, super aggressive MMC that has a tragic and emotionally devasting backstory that makes him the way he is and causes him to horrendously and unforgivably treat the MFC so badly that it’s excused and the MFC suffers horribly and humiliatingly at his hands, is a doormat, and is not respected or listened to at all by anyone in her life and said MFC takes said MMC back because her body just can’t say no to his and love is blindingly stupid.
I love Maya Alden but this book was horribly boring, I could only read up to 33% and after that, could care less what happen in the rest of the book. This book should be a "skip this book"! Shirley
I’ve been waiting for this story since I read the first book in Maya’s Savannah’s Best series. Luna Steele was there from the start, bada&& architect at Savannah Lace, fierce friend, and strong woman all on her own. But, in her past is heartache over her one and only love, Dominic Calder. Believing he cheated on her in their young love when she was 20, Luna isn’t sure how to handle his return to Savannah years later. What the reader finds is a woman who will defend her friends to the death but has a broken heart underneath all her snark. Watching Luna and Dom work their way back to each other through their own pain, distrust, missteps, and challenges keeps the story moving but deep in feelings. They, along with Luna’s brother, Lev, have to navigate her toxic parents while learning who really matters in their lives. They also address issues of racism (Dom is mixed raced.), misogamy by many of Savannah’s male leaders, and social equality. Luna and Dom handle all with grace and hearts of steel. A wonderful addition to the Savannah’s Best series.
Rating: 4.5/5 I’ve read several of Maya Alden’s books and love each one's angsty messiness. They may not be right for everybody, but they are for me. Best in Class, though, is a good starter book for those wanting to start out slow with all things Maya Alden without going full-on angst and drama. That’s not to say Best in Class is without any drama.
Once young and in love, Dominic and Savannah had some unfortunate circumstances that ended their relationship, leaving Savannah believing some things about Dominic for several years. When their paths are crossed again and Dominic wants another chance, Savannah makes him work for it due to what happened in the past.
I did enjoy Best in Class, as mentioned earlier, it may work well as a less angsty and messy option for those wanting to try a Maya Alden book. Her books always end in an HEA, and Best in Class was good.
Second chance romance with an enemies to lovers ! No cheating but made her think there was! I must say I’m not into it! I was really looking forward to it but it wasn’t that great. By pages 36, Nina Davenport one of the characters described the whole book in one sentence!
“Care to explain why the two lead architects on the most high-profile project in Savannah are also starring in what appears to be a slow-burn workplace rom-com?”
And after that nothing else happened! Predictable and boringly slow!!
They are good secondary characters but the story is full of miscommunication, fake bf and fake gf, cat and mouse BS! I didn’t enjoy it at all! The only bit that I enjoyed was when the other characters were involved (their banter and friendships) so that’s not a lot!
If you like to read about architecture and hospitals regulations this book might be for you! It feels like that’s all there is to it!
This book was so much more than a second chance romance to me. It dealt with so many issues of class and race and parental expectations. It really got to me. I’ve wanted Luna’s story for a while, because she is just an awesome bad@$$, who I wanted more of and for her to get her HEA after supporting everyone else. This did not disappoint! Also, Dominic may now be my favorite, definitely in the top 3! His love for Luna was epic and the way he spent his life trying to make himself better for her kind of broke me a little. Theirs really was kind of an epic love and I loved learning where all the vitriol from Luna came from.
My heart also breaks a little for Luna and Lev for what they went through with their family. Their father is just toxic. I love that Luna was strong enough to cut them out and accept that she would never have a relationship with her father and mother. I h@te Nathaniel and what he forced Dominic to do among many other things. Their mother I just felt sorry for. Lev needs to get away from them too. He needs to cut his father off. I so want his happy ending now and I think we may have gotten a little glimpse towards the end at the party maybe with him possibly saving someone from Larry the loser….I hope…maybe..,
I love this book and I will definitely be re-reading it for another hit of Dominic. Awesome book! 💜
The Fire and Ice of a Bittersweet Relationship Maya Alden doesn't disappoint with this refreshing Dominic Calder & Luna Steele journey. Whilst I expected at lot more fire because of who they are, it's not surprising that Luna doesn't react as expected when Dom finally gets a second-chance with his Moonbeam.
Kudos to Maya Alden for her realistic descriptions of the issues facing Dom and Luna within Savannah's social class distinctions; discrimination, old money, and family obligations.
Whilst my heart ached for Dom, it was interesting seeing both of their true characters come into play. Each scenario allowed a different aspect to shine; their honesty, integrity, and loyalty to themselves, some of their families, their friends and each other.
Whilst Luna's relationship with her parents is broken, her relationships with her brother and Dom's mama - their former housekeeper, Miss Abigail - continues to thrive. It's awesome to know Dom loves his mama unconditionally and respects her opinions even when he doesn't agree. As most of us know, sometimes our parents prove to be detrimental to our wellbeing and, Luna and Lev's parents prove to be the same. I'm rapt because, when it matters, Luna and Lev love and support each other and Dom; especially with their toxic father. Dom does the same for them too.
I thoroughly enjoyed the new insights I've gained about architecture and can see why Nina and her Savannah Lace crew are so successful in this traditional male-orientated field. For me, because of his talent, hard work and self belief, Dom ends up owning this aspect of their relationship. Zaha Hadid's architectural designs are stunningly poignant and love Dom and Luna's descriptions: "... Her work is chaos and grace. Liquid geometry. Concrete that looks like silk ... Her Heydar Aliyev Center is an architectural masterpiece. I had a tear in my eye when I saw it ...”
Enjoyed Dom and Luna's journey, Maya, and their bonus epilogue doesn't disappoint because it is sooo them; laidback and cruisey.
Privileged to receive and review this ARC by author, Maya Alden.
I never really got a good read on Luna in the previous books, but the Savannah's Best series has not disappointed me yet. And I loved being in her head. And in Dom's. He is just so totally gone for her. She could practically kick him with steel-toed boots and he'd just say, "My Precious Moonbeam has such strong legs."
I loved Luna and Dom and getting to see their history after it's been hinted at. It was also great to see the old crew as well as new faces. And I was so seriously giddy to see Nina and Diego.
My only tiny issues: While I understand Dom's reason for what happened, what I don't understand is why he thinks waving a woman in Luna's face is going to get her back? Also, I wish all the other women weren't so pushy about Luna forgiving Dom. It just kind of felt like everyone was not understanding that for all that she understood, the guy she loved cheated on her in a seriously callous way. I wish there had been some hesitation, or a transition period from "you're cool, but you hurt our friend" to "come one, he was just a dumb kid".
But it in no way affected my enjoyment of the book. Just a quibble.

Luna and Dom's story is the one I've been looking forward to since the first book in the series. Luna is a strong FMC. Dom is an equally strong MMC. I loved seeing how their story unfolded. How they both grew and became their best versions of themselves when they faced the past and worked through their heartache and mistrust. I can't wait to read Lev's story one day. He is Dom's best friend and Luna's brother. Their parents did a number on them and Luna chose herself a long time ago so she could heal and become someone whom they couldn't manipulate. Lev, finally, chose his mental and emotional health over the emotional manipulations of his morally bankrupt, racist, misogynistic parents. I love this author and I become emotionally invested in her characters. She is definitely on my must read list.
This is a wonderful book with some really great tropes: brother's best friend, first love, OW drama, betrayal & groveling, enemies to lovers and second chance. Luna is the love of Dominic's life, his first love. He hurt her very badly years ago but now he's back and determined to win her back. But she's certainly not making it easy on him. Luna is a strong successful woman and great at her job. Now she is working together with the man who broke her and who still holds a piece of her heart. This is going to be a hard earned grovel, but he knows she's worth it and he's not giving up. I loved this couple and Dominic's transformation. This is such a wonderful story of redemption, forgiveness and second chances.
I have read every Maya Alden book I can get my hands on, but the last few have just felt very repetitive and cookie cutter-ish. I knew within 3 chapters exactly how this entire story was going to go almost to the letter. I’m really hopeful that the next few books coming out offer something fresh or different or a twist, something to break out of the predictable mold these have become. I genuinely have told people for a while that Maya is my favorite author and I meant it, but I’m struggling to finish these books lately because they’re, well, for lack of a better word they’re getting boring. They’re well edited, timelines check out, plots and settings are well done as usual, but it’s just the same old same old again.
Unfortunately this book didn’t do it for me, maybe it was because of the high expectations due to the other books, but I really didn’t feel the angst and the gut wrenching I‘ve experienced while reading Stella, Mira or Nova‘s book.
The addressed topics were deep and weighty but somehow the book felt too light „lovey dovey“ and kinda only scrunched the surface.
I would have generally liked more depth, storyline and growth of the characters (Luna and especially her parents). Tbh to me this book felt like a prequel to Lev’s book where hopefully more action will take place.
I usually love Maya’s book, but this one was just too boring, too repetitive and with no plot. It is just story about forgivness where hero is so whiny and heroine is just stubborn. Story does not have any depth, but I wouldn’t miss to read Luna and Dom story, bcs they were mentioned so many times in previous books. Mayas writting is getting better with each book, but stories are declining and nothing can beat my favourite Kiss from the Rose.
Luna and Dom! The next highly anticipated book in this series. Luna and Dom’s history goes back to when they were children. Dom broke Luna’s heart and this is their journey back. I loved how strong Luna was, and how patient Dom was! The supporting characters are great as usual and I really enjoyed this book in the series.
I was anticipating this story for a year now. But it was kind of disappointing for me. Almost DNFed because I thought Luna would be the BADASS BADASS Luna I thought she was the past previous books. She kept on saying, “I won’t be like my mother” then proceeds to jump on Dom.
But I still gave this a chance. The ending is okay though.
Another great book by Maya. I loved Luna and Dom. Luna had been disappointed and betrayed by both her parents. Her biggest betrayal came from Dom. The betrayal was understandable coming from their youth. He had a lot of growing up to do to be worthy of her. She made in grovel and the forgiveness was worthy it.
This was a beautiful story of childhood friendship, teenage love. And of two souls losing their way from mistakes they have made. Dom and Luna story was a beautiful read this two lost their way but their love was one of a kind. It made them more stronger and appreciated the happiness that they had for one another. I’m so loving this Savannah’s Best series.
Next installment in Maya Alden's Savanah series!!! Friends to lovers to enemies to lovers.Dynamic portrayal of love loss due to family interference. Character build up from both FMC and MMC; with MMC truly fighting to earn back the trust and love of his beloved. A beautiful story with HEA.
Again, the author throws in more knowledge or architecture, wine, and repeated feelings than actually giving us more interaction with the two mail characters. Plus, it's hard to have a story when the conflict is already resolved in the being of the book. We already know the outcome but usually a good story is we get to go on the journey. With this book we already know he wants her back and she still loves him..Done.. It's hard to read a story where it's just about...to trust, not to trust through the whole thing. I stopped and read another book before finishing this one. The one of the next books is already lined up in the same fashion. The author can't seem to take the chance on letting us journey through the turmoil. It's already done in the beginning. Hmmm.
Read this book from an ARC. Have been anticipating it since reading (multiple times) the Savannah’s Best series. Did not disappoint. Read without breaks!! Definitely worth your time.
I read this book for closure as I had read all the other books in Savannah series. I could not relate to the characters and did not see the chemistry between Luna and Dom - which was apparent to everyone... Mostly skipped parts as whole anger point felt misplaced.. the reason for break-up was petty and this plot is quite over used throughout books and movies.
Savannah's Best by Maya Alden has made me hope for 10 more books in the series. That said, I could not wait for this particular book to come out, like many other Maya fans.
The heroine, Luna Steele, had amazing character development throughout the series. I loved her grit and loyalty. But as strong as she presented herself, the pain she carried underneath is evident in Best in Class.
Given the hero Dominic's betrayal I wondered how he would even be able to make things right again. And what do you know? He absolutely did. It wasn't easy but his love for her lead the way.
The author does a great job of addressing some tough topics like racism and equal rights for women, both of which had me fuming.
I plan on reading and re-reading this entire series multiple times.
We’ve watched the inimitable Luna stand loyally and immovable at the behest of those she holds dear. She has been raised in the epitome of southern society; and yet, Luna is honest, humble and incredibly self aware. She is a stalwart of integrity and uses her privilege to call to carpet those still relegated to the past and its ideals.
Luna and Lev grew up in a toxic home and it shaped Luna’s ideas of love and fidelity. When Dom returns hell bent on winning Luna back, she must confront the girl she was and have courage to trust in the woman she has become. To have faith that giving this unbreakable woman a second chance, could in fact be strength for a formidable foundation.
This story encapsulated the feeling of muggy summer days, cold sweet tea, and nights filled with tree frogs and falling stars. It reminded me of those humid nights sharing secrets while counting fireflies. There is a sweet kinda love that holds space for the past and scared hope for what could be.
I cannot recommend this book or series enough and hope you will fall in love with Luna and Dom when their story releases on September 21st.
