I gave this book 2 stars because there is genuinely interesting material buried inside it. The overview of the nahual in different Mexican traditions, the contrast between its role as a spiritual companion and as a malevolent shapeshifter, and some of the regional legends were worth reading.

Unfortunately, the editing is exceptionally poor. Entire paragraphs are repeated almost verbatim, sometimes only a few pages apart, making it obvious that the manuscript received little or no editorial review. This alone made the reading experience frustrating.

The writing itself also leaves much to be desired. The dialogue often feels unnatural and overly melodramatic, with characters reacting in exaggerated ways that rarely resemble how people actually speak. On top of that, many scenes follow the exact same pattern over and over: one character says something, everyone agrees, another character repeats or expands on it, everyone agrees again, and the cycle continues. It becomes predictable and repetitive very quickly.

It’s a shame, because there is a solid foundation here. With a thorough edit, the removal of duplicated passages, and a more natural writing style, this could have been a much stronger introduction to the folklore surrounding nahuales. As it stands, I found the editing and repetitive prose too distracting to recommend it beyond readers who are specifically interested in the subject.

Decepcionante.
