The Hunt was supposed to be harmless. A Crowsfell University tradition. This year, someone changed the rules.
It felt like a joke until the cryptic texts turned into threats, and masked figures started lurking in the shadows.
Now, my friends and I are trapped in a game we never agreed to play. Secrets are surfacing, tensions are rising, and the line between trust and betrayal is blurring faster than I can keep up.
Then there’s Ryder Voss. My best friend. My anchor. The one person who’s always been there. The golden boy hiding far too much darkness.
He isn’t just protective anymore, he’s relentless. The more things spiral, the more possessive he gets.
I crave his obsession as much as I fear it. Because if the boy who’s always saved me decides to ruin me? I’ll let him.
None of us are ready for what’s coming. And without him, I don’t stand a chance.
About the book TAG is the first part of a dark, slasher-inspired romance duet, set within the elite world of Crowsfell University. A slow-burn with morally grey characters, forbidden tension, and a web of secrets and lies.
Why are we all collectively not obsessing over this book and talking about it more?
When the hunted become hunters. Who wins?
This is such a spooky, college setting, group of besties, found family, secrets galore type of book where are two main characters Sanjana and Ryder we’re born to be each other‘s forever, but it got complicated where they ended up dating other people. And throughout this very slow burn, they finally given into each other while also dealing with a tradition of the town they live in… The Hunt.
Let me just say the author Natalie Bennett does a fantastic job of mind fuckery. You wanna trust this set of characters, but you just don’t know who is behind all of the creepy bizarre shit happening.
This tradition is supposed to be harmless fun but there’s clearly a group of people that are taking it way too far. They are leaving bodies and missing college students…. Is it the boyfriend? The weird girl who’s trying to fit in? Is it someone on the inside? I seriously don’t know who the hell to trust. And this was one hell of a book. I could not stop reading.
The whole other aspect of the book is the romance. Ryder is so devoted, so in love, and so freaking obsessed with Sanjana. Like he gives off red flags in every chapter, but I absolutely love him and adore him for her.
But like, is he one of the masked Huntsman? I’m really hoping the next book comes out soon because I am dying to know what the hell is going on! I have so many highlights from this book and I still cannot figure out this mystery.
You’re gonna get spice, besties, found family, boys who protect their women, fall and creepy college setting, angst, and so much more.

Tag(Game of Crows #1) by Natalie Bennett. It has been quite some time since I read this author. She can write sick and demented slasher stories like no other. Her books always make me question my sanity, considering how much I love her storytelling. Due to the fact that it would take her so long to write the next book in a series she would start, I had taken a break. I am so glad I came back. This book started out straight from the beginning, and she didn't let up. Sanjana and her crew, who have basically grown up together, are now at Crowsfell University. They are a tight-knit group. However, Sanjana and Ryder have a special relationship. They are best friends that border on much more even though each have significant others. Each year, the school has a ritual that has taken on a deadly and gruesome twist this year. The girls have been targeted as one group, and the guys are another group. However, the guys are already into some deadly games, and when Sanjana is targeted, Ryder takes his obsession with her to a whole knew level. This book may have a lot of pages, but you don't even realize it. The story is so good, and I was so engrossed in what was happening that when I realized I was at the end,I was pissed. Yes. The story ends on a cliffhanger and boy, oh boy! I don't know what to think. All I know is I can't wait till the next book comes out. 5 demented stars for me.
THIS!! THIS!! This is why I am obsessed by this author. What a story and I need book two now!!!
I didn’t read this as soon as I got it and I’m glad I waited as life threw me a curveball and I needed this book to get lost in the words.. and that’s exactly what happened. This author caught me hook, line and sinker with her words.
The storyline is brilliant and I loved the characters… well most of them lol I seriously can’t wait to read more of this story… hopefully soon :)
I wanted to love this book so bad. The concept? Sick. Kids getting either marked to be hunted or being the Huntsmen? Dark. Twisted. Totally my thing. This year it gets personal — people dying, blood spilling, secrets unraveling left and right — all the good stuff.
But my god did this story draaaaag. And the main friend group? Annoying.
Let’s talk about the romance — Rye and Sanj Throughout the whole book, both of them are dating other people while having feelings for each other. Now everybody and their ancestors knows they belong together, YET somehow only Sanj gets guilt tripped abt it. She's pretty much broken up with her boo, but because of some "ulterior movtive" Ryder still gets to date the other girl. Okay fine, Bond villain, whatever — but WHY does no one say anything about it?? Like okay, don’t, but at least don’t dump all the blame on Sanj??
“oh we’ve always known Ryder’s loved you since you were kids,” or “he’d do anything for you,” or “you just need to stop being afraid of your feelings.” But not ONE of them ever stops to ask, “if he was so in love with her, why was he out here dating other girls?”
He’s been in love with her since childhood, but it's okay for him to hook up with other girls? A fact that we get told about again and again btw. I get it, they weren’t technically together, but the double standard was insane.
And don’t even get me started on the rest of the guys in the group. They’re all stupid rich, “it crowd,” scary, mysterious, whatever — but apparently the only way to investigate anything is by sleeping with random chicks. Okay magic ding dongs do your thang
And finally — the plot. They catch, like, four Huntsmen. But somehow not ONCE does anyone ask, “Hey, who else is involved?” Like— does the magic stop at your ding dong??

Thriller/slasher, best friends to lovers dark romance! I actually quite enjoyed this one. Sass and Rye are two peas in a pod, and have been besties their whole lives, accepted by each others families and always what could be best described as inevitable. For whatever reason, after a prank kiss that turned heated last year, Sass has convinced herself that Rye can do better and assumes she is alone in her pining for her best friend, though the reader knows that Rye has always looked at her as end game. The world is not very well fleshed out, nor are all the side characters - you know that everyone in this little group of friends are wealthy, but it seems there may be mafia ties? (All the guys and even some of the girls are truly unhinged, unaliving people left and right, though Sass is completely in the dark about it all)
And the tradition of tag at Crowsfell University is not very well explained, but for this year, it seems people are not playing by the rules and the tight knit group of friends find themselves being stalked and heckled by hunters looking to expose their secrets? Kill them? It’s very unclear.
While I usually LOVE a friends to lovers, I felt that, considering there is a sequel not yet released (MUCH TO MY DISPLEASURE AT THE END OF THIS BOOK), too early in this book did the MCs announce their feelings to one another, while dating other people, and so were delaying any really physical infancy between each other. I felt that even though the smut was fairly minimal, there wasn’t a whole lot of tension through most of the book because they know they’re going to be together, which put a damper on the book as a whole for me. I will wait for the sequel.

Okay, so TAG is one of those books you pick up thinking, “Let me just see what this is about,” and then suddenly you’re three chapters in, fully unhinged, and emotionally attached. By the time I finished, it had officially become one of my favorite reads. The vibe is pure dark-college chaos. What’s supposed to be a fun, harmless game turns into something way darker, and the tension just keeps building. Every chapter feels like a dare. You tell yourself “one more page,” and then the book laughs in your face and drags you deeper. The romance? Messy. Intense. Obsessive. Not soft, not sweet, not normal. exactly the kind of dramatic energy that keeps you glued to the page. The setting is creepy in the best way. It gives you that feeling like the walls are watching, like every corner has a secret you are not ready for. And honestly, that made the whole experience even better. And the ending. listen. I hit the last page, blinked, and genuinely thought my copy was missing chapters. The way I was SO disappointed, not because the ending was bad, but because I absolutely was not ready for it to be over. I wanted more. Immediately.
I’m always on the lookout for new books by this author. Ms. Bennett is incredible storyteller and writer. And this book keeps proving my point again and again. The story is set in Crowsfell University. Where traditions carry on through the years. Sanjana and Ryder are best friends. But I could feel their emotions and intensity towards each other and knew there is more than friendship there. Theirs is a slow burn. The feelings and emotions simmering at the surface. The tradition of The Hunt at their university is done all in good fun. Until it isn’t. Who’s responsible for the creepy horror happening? It was a guessing game I loved because the author is brilliant at boggling the mind. When Sanjana becomes the next target. Well let’s just say Ryder’s protectiveness and obsession hits an all time high without any limits. Once I started this book of cat and mouse, hunter and prey I couldn’t stop reading. The story is gripping and thrilling. And I couldn’t get enough. The stunning cliffhanger has me chomping at the bit for the next book!
I am so mad at myself for not paying attention to the fact that the second book hasn't been released yet! This book was a lot in the best way. The detail was great-I could picture everything and everyone clearly in my head. The character connections were wild! There are so many key people to keep track of but it was a fun ride. The slicing and dicing, beat downs and overprotective friend circle is great. Normally an over the top protector irks me but this circle is so tightly knit and the way that they connect with one another makes me root for them.
I'm excited to potentially get a bigger glimpse into Ryder's head in the next book...assuming he is still in one piece. He is definitely unhinged and I love it. The cliffhanger had me MAD. It's driving me nuts not being able to pinpoint the person(s) responsible for the new changes to The Hunt.
This book was about as chaotic as my review and I loved it-very much looking forward to the next!

I loved this book. The beginning had me squealing. The opening was just like watching the movie Scream. It was so good! I was hooked! The Hunt at Crowsfell University is a tradition. When you enroll into the school, you basically agree to participate in their traditions. So you're playing in the Hunt whether you want to or not. What seems like a harmless fun tradition is more psycho slasher. Ryder & Sanj are just meant to be & everyone knows it. I didn't like the game/run-around they gave one another. Well mostly Sanj, Ryder was just trying to make her see what everyone already knew. They have a very close knit group that should be untouchable. They all come from money & are very popular so it's crazy that they are being hunted. I'm really curious to see how it all goes down. And that ending should be illegal. That cliffhanger was uncalled for.
TAG was such a wild ride, and I absolutely loved every second of it! It’s dark, obsessive, and the perfect best friends-to-lovers college romance with a slasher twist. The setting at Crowsfell University gives off all the elite, secretive vibes, and the slow-burn tension between Ryder and Sanjana? Off. The. Charts.
I seriously loved all the characters—every one of them brought something to the table. Normally I can guess what’s going on in these kinds of stories, but this one kept me completely guessing. The twists and turns had me hooked, and the whole vibe is dark and ominous in the best way, and just so good.
That cliffhanger though?? I need book 2 ASAP. If you love dark romance with secrets, serious mind games, morally grey characters, and an addictive plot, this is a must read. Kim L - Wonderful World of Books
I absolutely love Natalie Bennett and will read anything she writes and Tag didn't disappoint only down side and hence why I gave it 4 stars is it could have been chopped in half at least it was just a tad too long for me.
TAG is a dark, addictive blend of college tradition gone wrong, simmering secrets, and obsessive romance. Natalie Bennett weaves a tense story full of cryptic threats, masked stalkers, and blurred moral lines. The relationship between Sanjana and Ryder is as intense as it is unsettling yes they are friends and I'll tell you now there's cheating in this as they are both with others but the slow burn oof the slow burn!!!! This is what kept me going till the end I just loved the push and pull between our MCs.
It’s twisted, dramatic, and impossible to put down — but be warned: the cliffhanger will leave you desperate for the sequel.
Natalie Bennett was a new author to me, and she has definitely left her mark!
I Absolutely adored this book. Two things …. I love a best friends to lovers trope, and LOVE a slow burn! This book definitely delivered that!
Ryder and Sanj! The slow burn between these two really made my temp spike! The gradual build, and constantly thinking ‘will they, won’t they?’ Always being on my mind. She delivered 👏🏻👏🏻 if a slow burn is not for you, then I wouldn’t recommend! The author explains that this first book is about building a picture and experiencing the burn! 🔥 so know this before jumping in!
The story, is like a guessing game. She definitely keeps your guessing, and now I’m frustrated because I really need some answers!
Trust me when I say, when you pick up a Natalie Bennett story you will be immersed in her world! OMG!
"TAG" was A.MAZ.ING!
Ryder! What, what!
The Hunt! A game where the rules have changed!
Sanjana and her friends are in play, but not because they wanted to play a part!
Ryder is her friend! Will he protect her!?
Who are the villains?
This is twisted. I t's dark! It is totally abnormally, delicious!
BUT, let me tell you...Ms. Bennett has left us on a Very, Very high cliff! Hope those fingers are strong because you definitely will have to hang onto this cliff! Hope the wait is not too long!
Okay… so, I know I said this the last Natalie Bennett book I read but, I am not usually into the horror genre but… I’m here for this!!! She has a way of twisting horror, drama, angst, and smutty hotness together and it works!
It did take me a few chapters to get really into this book but once I got into it, I read it in two days!
The angst between Sanj and Ryder! The drama with all the characters and the underlying stalker elements… phew! Whiplash but of the best kind.
2.75 rounded up – I feel like I’m in the minority here, but I’m just not into the obsessive trope. Not only were the romances obsessive, but the friend group was obsessed with each other too-and it was mentioned a lot. I felt like the book didn’t need to be 691 pages and we haven’t gotten to the hunt even in those pages. I found the grammatical errors were hard to ignore. I liked Sanjana as a character and enjoyed most of her chapters, but overall it just fell a little flat for me. That being said, I am still curious and will read book 2 most likely. I want to see how the hunt plays out.
This was so addictive. I couldn’t put it down and the slow burn of it all just made it that much better. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the main characters along with their friend group as well as getting an idea of what their dynamic is like. I really loved the peaks of mystery this book gave and the direction this series is going in. That ending was diabolical and I need the next book, yesterday.
Once again Natalie Bennett has spun a story that sucks you in and gets you caught up in her web. For those of you that are familiar with Natalie Bennett, I will say this was a bit, dare I say tamer, than her previous stories. Do NOT get me wrong, this story has darkness, we are getting a whole bunch of suspense and mystery, plus a whole heap of chemistry. I just know the rest of this series will be explosive when we get it! I give this 5 stars.
TAG is the first part of a dark, slasher-inspired romance duet, set within the elite world of Crowsfell University. • TROPES V • Dark romance meets psychological horror Jock x Cheerleader Best friends to lovers • Stalker/slasher vibes Forbidden, possessive, and twisted
I finished this book and rated it a 4.8⭐️ I really enjoyed it and loved the build up, I also loved the fact it was a slow burn she didn’t rush the characters. The tension between Ryder and Sanjana was chefs 💋 I’m enjoying a lot the plot to the book which started with someone getting unalived in the first chapter and then they are talking about The Hunt just to find out Sanjana and her friends were “Marked” which includes of getting stalked, anonymous messages and secrets being spilled.
I don’t want to spoil too much just keep in mind it is a duet so the book does end in a cliffhanger.
Omg what a book! Mercy it's been a minute since I read one of this authors book's, and after reading it, it just reminded me of how much I love her storytelling. She'll test your mind that's for sure as she took me on one wild mindf*k of a ride. I definitely didn't want it to stop, so now I have to get my hands on the next book.
What another amazing book by this author. I learned a long time ago to never think you have to all figured out because 9 times out of 10 you'll be wrong. Nobody does a twist like Natalie does and no many authors can do dark like she does. She always keeps you guessing and I cannot wait for book 2.
It ends with a HUGE cliffhanger, and those who are familiar with Natalie Bennett books, know that second book takes forever, we are talking about years. There was a lot of information dump bordering Slow Burn.
like i get it omg they’re besties and always have eachothers backs. you don’t have to keep having them inner monologue that. i love her books normally but the writing wasn’t quite as good.
I would’ve rated this book higher than three stars, but there was just too much fluff—it really needed an editor. So many words and pages were spent describing surroundings or adding information that didn’t move the plot along, which became frustrating. I found myself skimming through most of the last quarter because of that.
That said, the premise is fun. It’s a thriller, it’s a love story, and it’s full of angst—all ingredients for a great plot. Sanji, our main character, is very sweet but also quite naïve, which I actually appreciate in a female lead. She has great chemistry with Ryder, though for someone meant to be a psychopath, he comes across as more sweet than dark. I wish his character had been a bit more menacing—it would’ve made the story more intense and given Sanji more to push against.
I also had to suspend a lot of disbelief around the “body disposal” scenes. The amount of evidence left behind felt unrealistic, especially with modern technology. I get that the characters are supposed to be psychopaths, but it just stretched believability.
The side characters were another weak point—there were too many of them, and their relationships got confusing. I do think the author tried to give each some background, but the group felt overcrowded, and at times I lost track of who was who.
Still, I plan to read Book 2. I’m hoping it’ll be darker, and now that I’m more familiar with this author’s style, I’ll know when to skim and when to dig in. The heat level wasn’t particularly high, but the chemistry between Sanji and Ryder definitely was. This book could’ve easily been three-fourths its length and would’ve landed just as well—maybe even better.
