Reptile Dysfunction: Harmony Glen

Rate this book
His head snakes aren't the only thing twitching with interest over her.
Turns out, "reptile dysfunction" isn't permanent when the right woman knows exactly how to handle a Gorgon.

SLOANE

I returned to Harmony Glen to care for my injured mom, not to obsess over a grumpy Gorgon whose snakes have better game than most humans. Now Thad's thrown out his back trying to impress me, and I’m suddenly playing doctor… battling the urge to thoroughly examine every inch of his rock-hard body.

THAD

Sloane Whitaker spells trouble—human, high-profile, and a threat to everything I’ve tried to protect. She looks at me like I'm more than just the guy who kept monsters in the shadows. She believes I could build something new... and my snakes aren't the only part of me ready to rise to the occasion.

Sometimes the best relationships start with a little dysfunction.

Return to Harmony Glen in this spicy standalone from USA TODAY Bestselling Author Alana Khan, featuring Thad—the broody, biker Gorgon brother of Sebastian (from Hiss and Tell). Prepare for snake shenanigans, small-town drama, and heat that’ll fog your windows.

* * * *
Though they once lived in secret, “monsters” have inhabited the earth as long as humans. As technology advanced by leaps and bounds, the ability to remain hidden dwindled. Earth’s nonhuman creatures faced a allow themselves to be discovered, or step forward and introduce themselves. Either option could have ended badly for monsters and humans alike—and in some places, it did.

But not in Harmony Glen.

After The Great Revelation, Harmony Glen welcomed monsters with open arms. This small, lakeside town in Upstate New York is now home to humans and nonhumans! Integration has been so successful in Harmony Glen, the town even changed its motto to “Come for the harmony, stay for the happily ever after.”

Welcome to Harmony Glen. We know you’re going to love it here.

Each book in the Harmony Glen multi-author series is a standalone cozy romance with a happily ever after! The books can be enjoyed in any order.

Sterling 🐍 just slays me - in the best way 😁 ever!!

“My snakes watch her go with varying degrees of interest—some suspicious, others almost appreciative. One particularly rebellious one at the back of my head actually sighs.”

An engaging, emotional read about finding yourself while being vulnerable. There is also a little mystery, quite a few involuntary chuckles, and one sexy and grumpy-acting Gorgon, I mean - who could ask for anything more 😀!! It’s the 5 year anniversary of the Monsters coming out and Sloane, who is a journalist and the mayor’s daughter, wants a behind the scene story from Thad who was an enforcer before the Revelation. But getting Thad to go along may need Sloane to employ a personal touch 😉. I received a free copy of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Revelation . . .

Sloane Whitaker, working for the Harmony Glen Gazette, wanted to get the Gorgon Thad Fangborn's comment about Revelation Day, the upcoming 5-year anniversary celebration since monsters came out of hiding. Her father, the Mayor, had suggested she talk to Thad Fangborn. So while he is giving swimming lessons to the children, she is trying to interview him by the poolside while she wears high heels against safety regulations. When he made it clear he was working, she said she would wait. Sloane had returned to Harmony Glen to care for her injured mom, not to get involved with the grumpy Gorgon. Her presence made him tense which made his snakes restless enough to squeeze tighter, giving him a headache. It didn't help when the older ladies he named "the Trio of Turmoil" tried to play matchmaker. And even when he has to give her the 5 minutes he promised (because she had waited all that time and wouldn't leave), the older ladies tell her that his brother is marrying a human and she wants to include that news too! He was adamant that she leave them out of it! Since Gorgons can radiate an intimation aura to make humans uneasy and willing to "back off", he uses it on Sloane. But to his shock, it elicited the comment that his eyes change color when he's angry! And then she demands he meet her for coffee the next day, not waiting for his refusal! Some of his snakes are suspicious, others appreciative, and one sighs. And all his snakes knew he would meet the woman despite his stubbornness. She already realizes she wants the "real" story from him for her article, not the one her father wants for the celebration. Her father wants "only progress", the good news about the peace the integration brought, surface level only; but Sloane thinks the whole story, the history behind it, is what is most important. Thad had been an "Enforcer" before the Revelation. But what does that mean and why won't her father tell her?

Returning home with her father, she contemplates a website she wants to establish to be truthful about what's happening in Harmony. But Bradley Harrington III drove up, so she put everything away. He was her father's choice as a "suitable match" for her. Her father had told him she would be home early so he came by unannounced to take her to dinner. He ignored her sarcastic response, still thinking she had to do what her father decreed. She said no to dinner since she had to write her article which he called a "fluff piece". So he made reservations for later without asking her! But she agreed to mollify her father. Meeting Thad for coffee, she deliberately brings up his Enforcer history and he reminded her it wasn't the feel-good story her father wanted. She pulled out her recorder and he agreed to tell her at his house so they won't be overheard, which the older ladies were doing now and even taking notes! He told Sloane to dress appropriately and he would pick her up on his motorcycle. The ladies are thrilled to see his snakes responding with interest toward Sloane. When he shows up on his motorcycle and gives her the rules, she climbs up and puts her arms around him. His snakes actually purr! The ladies told him Sloane had invited him to pilates class and he actually went. Only after it was over did the ladies pop out of hiding and claimed his actions were better than cable! And they reminded him to do extra stretches to relieve his muscles that don't usually get used as he limps to his next class. By the end of the day, his back is actually aching from the pilates class. And when he has his first experience with the Reformer, his back shoots pain all the way up his spine. All of his snakes are drooping and one hangs limp over his forehead. Sloane drove him home, his snakes dramatically reacting to every bump in the road. She sees him as the hero he is, the sacrifice he has made to keep others safe, providing what both the monsters and humans needed to get through the difficult transition unharmed. Is it his turn now? Are the two of them ready for a future together as they take care of each other?

Instalove although neither will admit it at first. Both seem gun shy of commitment. The three old busybodies from Hiss and Tell make a reappearance and are even more invested in Thad’s love life than they had been in Sebastian’s.

I’m sure I’m not the first and certainly won't be the last to ask but how does Thad manage to wear a helmet over his snakes? Don’t they need to breath? Aren’t they squished? If modifications are made, i.e. air holes, room to move, wouldn’t that destroy the integrity of the helmet?

While on the subject of snakes, do they eat separately from Thad or do they receive nutrition from what he consumes? I’m guessing the second since there’s no mention of them partaking of food. How long are they? One wraps itself around Sloane’s throat so it would have to be more than a foot long to reach from Thad’s head. How many are on his head?

Inquiring minds want to know.

This was such a fun book and I enjoyed getting to know Thad better after getting glimpses of him in his brother Sebastian's story in Hiss and Tell: Harmony Glen. Thad and Sloane were a fun couple that work well together. I also loved Thad's snakes and how they behaved, especially Sterling. The Silver Swimmers (Iris, Dorothy, & Mabel) were great in this story as well and they added a lot of light humor. I look forward to reading many more books by Alana Khan in the future.

Harmony Glen sounds like a place I'd love to visit.
Sloan's dad wants her to do a feel-good article for his paper about how the monsters and humans have gotten along since they revealed themselves to the human world. But she's got a feeling that they're something deeper to the story and she's going to find it. Her father doesn't run life, she does, so she starts up a blog to tell it the way it should be told.
Thad was an enforcer before the revelation, now he teaches kids and the Silver Brigade how to swim and exercise. At first, he doesn't want to talk to her but changes his mind when she tells him that she wants the truth about the past for her blog. If she wants the truth, he'll tell her.
When they want to "follow what feels right and not what makes sense", it only makes them hunger for more of each other. Then Sloan finds out the real reason that her father is pushing her towards a total "stuffed shirt" and she's not having it. She wants to be over her own life and feel free to be with whoever she wants. And she wants Thad.
Every part of Thad wants her as well. But as her father said, actions have consequences and some people don't take rejection well or when someone ruins their plans.
Good thing he's an enforcer with a Journalist girlfriend who knows how to find her story.
Sloan is a strong FMC who doesn't back down and is just right for Thad. The Silver Brigade and Sterling had me in stitches.
This review is my own opinion and is not AI generated.

This book was such a fun surprise! Our heroine, a NYC journalist, returns home to help her mom recover from a hip replacement, only to find her dad (the mayor) trying to micromanage her life and push her into his political world. His “perfect” candidate for her is Henry the III (ugh—total bore and just like her dad).
Enter Thad, the so-called bad boy gorgon. What was supposed to be just an interview quickly turns into something much more. The chemistry between them is instant, and I loved how his snakes became such a unique and unexpected part of their connection (yes, they’re even partners during the steamy scenes 👀). The fact that his snakes actually liked her made me grin—it was such a sweet detail.
There’s some real emotional pull too. When Sloane walked away to have dinner with Bradley, my heart broke a little. Her return to Thad and the way she brought him home to meet her parents was perfect. Of course, things don’t stay simple—Bradley’s definitely up to something—but I loved the tension it added.
It was also such a treat to see Sebastian and his family again—it tied everything together beautifully. What stood out most was how the story showed that your past doesn’t define your future, and that you can always choose a different path. By the time these two got engaged, I was completely invested and cheering them on.
Romantic, funny, emotional, and a little unexpected—this book had it all.

Sloane left a flourishing journalistic career in NYC to come home & help with her mother's hip replacement surgery recovery. As mayor, however, her dad wants her to do a "feel-good" piece in the local paper about Revelation Day. That day, humans learned of the existence of monsters. She's frustrated. She knows there are "real" stories in Revelation Day and that's the story she wants to tell. She starts an anonymous blog where she tells real stories about how monsters' lives and humans' lives were changed on that day 5yrs ago. And she has just the man....uhhhh..."male" to tell his story: Thad Fangborn. Sloane wants to the the REAL story about how his life changed, not her father's fluffy, feel-good version because there's something else going on involving monster-owned businesses and a large developer pressuring for lowballed purchase offers.

Thad can't believe his eyes when a human woman strides into the pool area in sky-high Louboutin stilettos and asks for an interview for an article she's writing.

No. Way.

His serpent-like "hair" however, has a different opinion about this female and keep revealing his true feelings, his attraction, for her and he reluctantly agrees to an interview. As an Enforcer, he's struggled a bit to adjust life among humans. He can better control his "protective" instincts by teaching swimming lessons to human children. He soon finds his protective skills come in handy when Sloane's (unwanted) suitor won't take "no" for an answer.

After reading Hiss and Tell, I was excited to read the story of his brother, and i was not disappointed!
Thad is a gorgon with the power to intimidate, or in certain situations, instill fear. He was a Sentinel for the monsters before they "came out" to the residents of Harmony Glen. Now he finds himself in a world that no longer requires his unique talents.
Sloane was building her career in the city until she came home to care for her mother and started working at her father's newspaper. He wants her to write a fluff piece on how monsters and humans live together in Harmony Glen, but she wants to write a bigger, more meaningful story.
Thad is tough but vulnerable, and a bit lost. Sloane is confident but feels like she isn't the author of her own life.
Can they find their space in Harmony Glen together?
This was a sweet, spicy, and feel-good read. It hit all the right notes without becoming trite.
I can't wait to dive into the rest of the books in this multi-author series!
I received an advance review copy and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Fun filled action read with wonderful characters and captivating scenario
This is a simply wonderful read I thoroughly enjoyed the main characters and the love story that have experienced within these pages, you will learn appreciate the live snakes that are constantly wiggling on Thad’s head.
Sloane is simply perfect as far as Thad is concerned, he is a former enforcer and he is always considered scary and she initially tries to push him away but he is persistent and as time passes and they begin to spend more time together their relationship obviously grows and we also learn about his brother Sebastian.
The way that Thad and Sloane eventually come together as a couple is simply wonderful and he begins to teach the kids how to swim and things are happy and growing strong between them both and I guarantee others will enjoy this book.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to reading any future publications; keep up all the wonderful writing.

I was so stoked to see we were getting another Gorgon story for the series and this author, again, crafted a fun and engaging read. Thad is Sebastian's brother (from Hiss and Tell) and while he was a Guardian before the 'monsters' came out, he's now feeling like he doesn't quite fit. He's active in the community, though, and initially has no interest in talking to journalist, Sloane, when she approaches him for a story filled with his truths. She's not feeling like she's in charge of her own life, though, with her father also being her boss. Turns out, she was right in thinking that she had to step up for herself and go for who she wanted: Thad. These two had such great chemistry and I loved seeing them find their way together, despite the drama and danger. Such a feel-good, and spicy, read and a wonderful addition to this fun multi-author series :D

Sterling Steals the Show!

Reptile Dysfunction is an absolute joy! Although part of the Harmony Glen series this can be read as a standalone book. I would however suggest first reading Hiss and Tell where we first get a taste of Thad and his spirited snakes!

Reptile Dysfunction has the perfect small town feel with all the excitement and drama that comes with mixing humans, monsters and magic. Along with the endearing Hero and cheeky Heroine, there are some fantastic secondary characters… Grannies with attitude, devious foes and heartwarming supportive families. There are plenty of laugh out loud moments, the perfect amount of tension and sublime spice that takes this story right over the edge. I highly recommend this enjoyable and light hearted read!

Sloane and Thad
Thad is the biker brother of Sebastian from Hiss and Tell, they are gorgons so their hair is very Alive! I loved Hiss and Tell so I was very excited to read Reptile Dysfunction and I really liked it. Thad is very difrent from Sebastian, he was after all and enforcer before the but reveal and he has to make a lot of sacrifices. Life was difrent now, he is a swiming teache and has a gang of mischivious old ladies that make his life a Litlle more dificult and also more fun. Sloane is a reporter and She returned to her hometown and now her father asked her to make a Nice piece about the bug reveal but only with the good parts. To bad She does whatever She wants and Thad is about to get a lot more fun.

This tale is about Sloane, a journalist. Her dad wants her to write a fluffy article about the Others and the Revelation anniversary. She wants to write the truth. So she corrals Thad, an enforcer gorgon, to interview. He doesn't want to but finds more than once he agrees verbally before his brain kicks in. Definitely interested in each other but fighting it and that is so fun to watch. The Silver Brigade/Snoopy Sisterhood/ Silver Swimmers/ Meddlesome Mavins are so fun.
Alana has given us amazing characters, especially Thad's snakes that have their own personalities, especially Sterling. It was so easy to fall into the scenes, I felt a part of them. Loving this world Alana has created.

I love when the male main character is the vulnerable one and Thad fits the role. He might have great gifts but doesn’t feel like he fits in the world anymore now that monsters have revealed themselves. Sloane, a journalist, sees the real Thad and helps him understand the great male he is! Along the way they face challenges from her father and some community members.

The chemistry between Thad and Sloane is undeniable, leading to some very passionate and sensual scenes.

Although it is part of a series and references other couples, it can easily be read as a stand alone.

There is magic to these Harmony Glen books. I loved the little bit we got to see of Thad in Hiss and Tell. I mean come on...a Harley riding bad boy Gorgon? Count me in! And Sloane! She strong and wonderful and perfect for Thad. She helps him see there is so much more to him than "just" Enforcer. These books are so well written. I adore the characters...The Silver Swimmers are a hoot! The stories are engaging. The world building is seamless. I absolutely loved it!

Our MMC Thad is totally the opposite of his brother Sebastian in "His and Tell." He’s pretty much what I picture a gorgon to be. He’s got the intimidating look down perfectly, but his snakes are actually pretty adorable. I can't help but smile when his snakes do stuff he can’t control, which shows how he really feels. That made him feel real to me. I'm really starting to like this guy, and it's all thanks to the FMC who brought out his true self.

This is a quirky addictive read. Sloane is definitely a ball buster. She knows what she wants and she knows how to get it 🤣.
These Gorgons are unique to say the least but wow this is an amazing whirlwind of a courtship. Sweet and sexy. Thad certainly come into his own, and what a delight he is. Of course we always have our meddlesome Silver Swimmers to brighten our day too, as well as Thad's snakes who are absolutely adorable.

Fantastic

Sloane is the mayor's daughter and a reporter. She is supposed to write a fluff piece for the revelation day but really wants the truth about the enforcers and how they kept the peace. Thaddeus is a gorgon and was one of those enforcers. With lots of banter and humor along with showing the acceptance of the differences and getting along with different species, this was a fantastic story.

Healing Reptile Dysfunction

Not just healing him when the "macho" in him overdoes a maneuver on an exercise machine, but also healing a whole community of monsters and humans. When they met sparks flew but it took them a while to acknowledge the attraction. It was nice visiting other characters from previous books as they helped them get their HEA.
