Only Rogue Actions: A Galactic Bonds book

Rate this book
“This is space opera at its finest.”—Ilona Andrew, #1 New York Times bestselling author on Only Bad Options

New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Estep continues her Galactic Bonds series with a new, action-packed adventure that blends science fiction, fantasy, and historical romance. This rollicking space opera features a mix of magic and technology, along with a soulmates story and “Pew! Pew! Pew!” battle scenes. Perfect for fans of Star Wars, Dune, Bridgerton, and Pride and Prejudice.

A WOMAN WHO DREAMS OF THE FUTURE . . .
Once upon a time, I was Vesper Quill, a lowly lab rat using my seer magic and engineering skills to repair broken appliances at a Regal-owned corporation. These days, I’m one of the most infamous and wanted fugitives in the Archipelago Galaxy, along with Kyrion Caldaren, my partner.

Kyrion and I are hiding out on a distant planet when we are offered a chance to train at a prestigious facility in hopes of better understanding our truebond, the psionic connection that lets us share thoughts, feelings, skills, and more.

Mastering our magic is the only way we can hope to defeat our many enemies and make my dreams of a safe future a reality, so Kyrion and I accept the invitation. But evil forces are at work, and our training exercise is not what it seems, plunging us both into another deadly situation with only bad options.

A MAN WHO CAN’T ESCAPE HIS PAST . . .
I’ve always been Kyrion Caldaren, a Regal lord with telekinesis, telepathy, telempathy, and other powerful psionic abilities. I might have gone rogue from the Arrows, the Imperium’s elite warriors, but my fighting skills are as sharp and deadly as ever.

Vesper Quill and I need help with our truebond, so we agree to participate in a rigorous training exercise designed to test the depths of our connection. But a new enemy has other plans, and we’re soon separated and confronted with one dangerous obstacle after another.

But my love for Vesper is stronger than any forces set against us, and I’ll do whatever it takes to make my way back to her—and kill anyone who gets in my way.

This fifth installment of the Galactic Bonds series sees Kyrion and Vesper trying a new test of their true bond. They are guests of Asterin's parents in the Erzton Kingdom. This couple have paid for a private true bond test in Roderick Battis' exclusive state-of-the-art battle simulator and maze. When the last battle group clears out, it is their turn. They divest themselves of weapons and head into the maze on opposite sides. They must avoid the traps and find each other in the centre of the maze.

But Roderick isn't interested in just watching. He wants to participate. Suddenly, it's a science fiction version of The Most Dangerous Game. Kyrion must fight for his life barehanded against an armoured opponent with a deadly war hammer, while Vesper deals with a lethal Black Scarab robot. This is Vesper's chance to prove that seers and engineers can be badasses too. Knowing how to build things means you also can figure out how to destroy them. Vesper gets to indulge her inner vandal, all the while wondering where Roderick acquired the Techwave robot.

This book felt rather like a holding pattern. I'm unsure that it advanced the storyline at all, despite the fun of seeing Vesper blow shit up and Kyrion turn the tables on a bully who can't win a fair fight. The pair are no farther along in their opposition to the Techwave or Callus Holloway, ruler of the Imperium. They still can't return home and Vesper's half-brother Zane is still obliged to at least pretend to pursue them on behalf of Holloway. Don't get me wrong, it was a fun story, but it didn't have the momentum that this series has had up to this point. I am glad that my library bought it, however, and I'll look forward to the next installment (where just maybe Asterin and Zane will finally click as a couple).

Stalled narrative

I’ve really enjoyed this series so far — the world-building, the true bond concept, and that fascinating mix of magic and science have kept me hooked. Vesper and Kyrion have been compelling characters, and their relationship has shown real growth over the earlier books.

Unfortunately, this instalment was a disappointment. The story feels like it’s stalled. We’re back to the same villains — her mother Nerezza, the Techwave, and Callus Holloway — and by the end, we’re standing in almost exactly the same place as the last book. Even the epilogue felt nearly word-for-word identical.

The action and banter that once drove the story now feel empty — more for the sake of filling space than pushing the plot or characters forward. I wanted evolution, but this one just spun its wheels

Welp! After the slip in the previous book in this series, Ms. Estep is back in her groove, and absolutely playing to her gifts with high action!

The story itself, while technically a full length novel, reads almost as if it’s a novella, as the set-up deals with one specific experience only. Vesper and Kyrion have settled into their truebond but are given the opportunity to test and strengthen it by participating in an elaborate obstacle course owned by another large House but open to everyone. The idea (aka test) is for each to be placed on opposite ends of the huge Labyrinth, filled with every kind of obstacle and challenge, without weapons. This requires them to use their bonded connection only to find each other - all while fighting the biodome, itself. Both are excited for the challenge but are also wary… As they should be. Given their past and the amount of people who want them taken out, even the reader can see this is NOT going to go as planned.

And, this is where Ms. Estep shines. The challenges and fights are creative and suspenseful, the bad guys are despicable and the pages end up flying by. There isn’t time for any depth or really much of anything other than complete and utter survival. But it is sure fun while it lasts!

Space opera at its finest with betrayal, loyalty tested, and pew-pew-pew! Another winner for me in the Galactic Bond Series. I love Vesper and her incredibly clever mind. In this latest book she once again demonstrates why she is the friend you want at your back. She's the one who will come through for you with little muss or fuss. She does it because it is the right thing. When the game is rigged, the only course of action is to go ROGUE!

Only Rogue Actions picks up the adventures of Kyrion and Vesper two weeks after the conclusion of the previous book. The pair remains in the Erzton with Asterin’s family, under the protection of House Collier. Following the advice of Lady Collier, Kyrion and Vesper plan to strengthen their truebond in a training maze owned by House Battis.

Only Rogue Actions is on the shorter side, taking place in the span of one afternoon as the pair enter the training maze. The facility reminded me of something the X-men would have: very high tech, multiple climates, and a large variety of obstacles, all of which are supposed to be set to easy since this isn’t a combat training exercise. As soon as the pair arrive at the facility and are told they cannot take their weapons into the maze, I knew things would not go as planned.

Despite not going as planned, the pair do in fact, train and strengthen their bond. I love how the story shifts between Kyrion and Vesper’s POVs as they each fight for their life. It’s fast-paced action that kept me on the edge of my seat. I enjoyed watching the pair test the truebond and learn to harness each other’s powers and their own strengths. I like that the plot didn’t go all over the place and stuck to the one storyline.

Even though Only Rogue Actions doesn’t focus on the overall story arcs, I really enjoyed it. The adventure is engrossing and exciting, and knowing the pair is stronger puts them one step closer to defeating the both the Techwave and Lord Callus Holloway.

My Rating: B+

This book does not further the main storyline and is a pleasant “interlude.” Ves and Kyr must, as is tradition, overcome an obstacle course that will lead them to defeat other enemies and strengthen their bond. It is always a pleasure to read their stories.

The first 60% of this book was wasteful, boring, and somehow spanned a 20 minute period of time yet I felt like I was dying a slow death.

But the last 30% was exciting and felt like we were back to the normal badassery of vesper and kyrion, whom I still love.

Still hate asperith and I really need her to be killed off.

Totally thought this was the final book in the series so I was not prepared for the whole book to cover 12 hours and move the plot along 0%.

I've really enjoyed this series so far, but this one didn't quite hit the mark for me.
Nothing happens in the first 25% of the book. There was so much unnecessary recap that it pulled me out of the story, and honestly I almost DNF'd. I'm glad I stuck with it, because it got better, but this story could have been half the length and been stronger for it, in my opinion. Also, all of that recap had so little to do with this specific story.
Even after that 25% mark, when things got going, there was still a very telly explanation for every single thing.
I did like how Vesper showed her character strengths. I wanted to see more of that dangerous Arrow come out in Kyrion.
All of that said, I will still probably continue this series till the end.

*Thoughts*

Only Rogue Actions is the 5th installment in author Jennifer Estep's Galactic Bonds series. This series features and alternates between Vesper Quill, a once-lowly lab rat who is also a seer, and Kyrion Calderon, a dangerous man who was once an assassin and the galaxy's most feared soldier. Two weeks after their last harrowing escape in Only Cold Depths, Kyrion and Vesper are laying low with allies, including Asterin Armas and Siya Collier, thanks to the recommendation by Verona and Aldritch Collier.

Reviewed on Lili Lost in a Book

4.5/5 ⭐

This is one of my favorite series because I love the blend of sci-fi and fantasy... and this is also by one of my favorite authors 😆

This book was on the shorter side—not quite a novella, but shorter than the other books in the series. However, that fact is not the only thing that made this book a quick read. This book takes place mostly all in one day! I love when books do that! It just feels that much more exciting and action-packed. And I love Jennifer Estep’s action sequences as is. Lol. She's mentioned in the past how action scenes are her favorite type of scenes to write, and you can tell because they're always amazing!

But anyway, in this book, Kyrion and Vesper are still trying to get a hold on their bond and learn how it works and how to use it to its full potential. So they go to this training program specifically designed for them to test and really solidify their bond. And the place actually sounded really cool! It was made up of a bunch of different biomes, wherein they would face challenges and would need to find a way to defeat them. Except, once they're locked inside the training arena, things get a little more lethal than expected... So is this just part of the training program, or are they actually in real danger?

I loved this premise so much! And it was just such a fun read! I already mentioned the action, but the setting was great too, as was the mystery behind what was happening. And I, of course, also love the characters. Vesper, particularly, had a really great fight scene! It was so satisfying! But more than that, I love how smart she is and how she uses not only her abilities, but also her wit to get out of really tough situations.

Kyrion also had a really good fight scene. For him, I really enjoyed him tapping into the bond to use Vesper's powers in conjunction with his own to defeat his opponent. I just think it's really cool how they are able to use each other's powers through the bond.

One thing I loved at the start of the series that I'm liking less and less as each book goes by is the romance. I could not put my finger on what it was that I was not liking anymore until I talked it over with a friend: the codependency. But not only that, Kyrian's overprotectiveness of Vesper is suffocating. Don't get me wrong, I love an overprotective male protagonist, but Kyrion is just too much. I really hope that when they finally get a hold of their bond, the codependency will resolve, because it's honestly kind of exhausting.

That being said, though, I really did enjoy this book and I am looking forward to the next one!

2ish stars?

This book was slow and doesn't really progress the story at all. Its more of a .5 kind of book. It takes place over about 12 hours and there is so much unnecessary recap as well. Only Rogue Actions is a training montage in a facility on Ezrton run by the Battis family. The idea is Vesper and Kyrion will be separated and surrounded by psionic dampeners in order to test and strengthen their true bond. So while the idea was cool and the traps and settings are interesting, it wasn't enough for an entire book in the series.

The best thing about this book is we get more of Vesper's seer power. That is always neat. As are the fight scenes.

I'm a bit worried the author is unsure of where to take the series from here but I will read the next one and hope I am incorrect.

Dynamite comes in small packages, and this shorter story packed quite the punch.

The action was thrilling and explosive (pun intended). Vesper and Kyrian used their abilities and their bond effectively and in a spectacular way. I loved how they love each other for who they are, without boundaries. The other characters added plenty of emotion and depth and it made me feel invested in their lives as well.

I wished there was more, the story was over so quickly. The epilogue provided all the answers I was looking for and it racked up the tension for the next part of the saga. I can highly recommend this series if you like steamy space operas with magical elements and plenty of suspense. It is definitely best to read these books in order. Vesper and Kyrion take turns telling the story, both in the first person, and occasionally we experience another character’s viewpoint.

Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Far Too Short…

While I absolutely adore this series, it can be torture to wait for another book in the Galactic Bonds universe. Unfortunately this latest installment was like taking a single bite out of a pint of ice cream and then forcing yourself to put it all away again. Hopefully the author will come out with a new full-sized book soon (hint, hint).

Really? You get invited into a battle arena that looks like a maze and the host turns out to be working for the enemy?
Yawn. We've seen these tropes before.

And of course, that host, one of the finest warriors of Erzton turns out to be only good at through cheating and having more firepower. How could he be a famous warrior if only he knows how to cheat?

And if course, Vesper is smarter than anyone and Kyrion is the badass warrior that will win over anyone, even with his bare hands.
Suuuure...

No, not a good story.

I'm beginning to think that if it wasn't for bad luck these two would have no luck. They always wind up in these crazy situations that they had to get out of. This time around is no different, other than they felt safe at the start and the threat seemed to come out of no where. I liked how both Vesper and Kyrion worked to get out of the snafu they found themselves in. At times each was on their own, others they did what they should have, counted on their bond and used it to their advantage. They are getting better about that. Of course they managed to come out on top. Vesper and Kyrion knew they had to deal with the "bad guy" and did so in a way that dealt with them and didn't leave any others to come after them for revenge.

I do find myself very intrigued the the ones pulling the strings on the "bad guy". One of them really has no soul. I can't wait to see Vesper and Kyrion take this person down and hope it's bloody, painful and brutal.

Only Rogue Actions by Jennifer Estep is the 5th book in her Galactic Bonds series. Only Rogue Actions is another wonderful action-packed sci-fi fantasy adventure, with a sweet romantic bond. As noted, many times, I am a big fan of Jennifer Estep, having enjoyed all of her fantastic series. Refresher: Vesper Quill, our heroine is together with her true bond, Kyrion Caldaren. Vesper is a seer, as well as being a successful inventor/engineer; always increasing her magical powers. Kyrion is also powerful, especially with his Psionic Arrow abilities. When the last book ended, both Vesper and Kyrion were accepted at House Collier, allowing them to live in their House.

Siya is one of the daughters, who is in charge of security; Asterin, has helped Vesper in past attacks in the Imperium. They both prepare Vesper and Kyrion for the Maze that has been working very well for House Battis; as most houses use this project.

In a short time, a trap is set up for Vesper & Kyrion, with Roderick has privately brought his team into the maze, making sure he will be able to kill Kyrion, and Vesper is in danger (with Jeffrey helping Roderick kidnap her). Also, both Siya and Asterin were handcuffed with Roderick’s staff, and they were also going to be killed; with Vesper going to be sent to one of her enemies.

Vesper manages to escape a Black Scarub and kill it; and is determined to find a way to help Kyrion, who is being attack by Roderick. But since she was close to the sisters, Vesper manages to defeat the 4 members of Roderick’s team, and knock out Jeffrey; and rescue Siya and Asterin. Once the three of them notify House Collier to come for the rescue, Vesper takes control of Jeffrey’s computer to look for Kyrion, before Roderick kills him. With Vesper powers, she manages to help Kyrion, who is very much in danger; and together they use their ability to stop and defeat Roderick.

Only Rogue Actions was in an exciting, no-stop, suspenseful, intriguing, captivating story that kept my attention from start to finish. Vespers magical powers continue to improve; as she was a fantastic heroine, smart and savvy. I loved seeing Vesper and Kyrion together to fight against their enemies. The last half of the book was very intense, with twists along the way. Only Rogue Actions was very well written by Jennifer Estep. Only Rogue Actions was another terrific, intriguing adventure filled with secrets, lies, betrayal, danger, and magic. I suggest you read this wonderful book.

ONLY ROGUE ACTIONS is the fifth instalment in Jennifer Estep’s adult GALACTIC BONDS sci-fi, fantasy space opera-esque series focusing on the former leader of the Imperium Arrows Kyrion Caldaren, and his truebond mate/seer/R & D tech specialist Vesper Quill. ONLY ROGUE ACTIONS should not be read as a stand alone as some of the events of the current timeline are as of a direct result from the previous stories.

Told from three first person perspectives (Kyrion, Vesper, Nerezza) ONLY ROGUE ACTIONS follows Kyrion Caldaren and his bondmate Vesper Quill as they are invited to take part in a holographic training session that becomes all too real, more than just images projected throughout a maze. The obstacle course slash labryinth is the stuff of their nightmares, and our couple, separated, and without weapons, find themselves fighting for their lives, in the wake of vengeance and betrayal. Having been set up, Kyrion must face down the demons from his past, as Vesper struggles to save the man to whom she had bonded.

The world building focuses on a fight for survival. A holographic and virtual world with real world outcomes and injuries, finds our couple battling a familiar foe; one man’s personal hunting playground, and every act of vengeance for sins of the past.

The secondary and supporting characters are numerous, energetic and sometimes questionable.

ONLY ROGUE ACTIONS is an action packed story of betrayal and vengeance, power and control, relationships and love. The fast paced premise is intriguing, dramatic and dark; the romance is fate-the $ex scenes are passionate but mostly implied; the characters are charismatic and determined.

Series: Galactic Bonds #5
Rating: 4 stars - It was really good

Vesper and Kyrion have been in the Erzton empire for two weeks now. They are learning how to control each other's abilities now that their bond has solidified. They have decided to test their abilities in a giant maze used as a training facility. They were supposed to go in alone to determine how quickly they can find each other, but they both quickly realize something else is going on and they are in danger.

Like all the other books in this series, I was instantly sucked into Kyrion and Vesper’s newest adventure. They came to Erzton to get a break from Holloway and make a plan to take him down, but instead keep having to deal with people coming after them. This was a very exciting adventure for the two, especially since it all takes place in one maze biodome. They have to deal with the traps in the maze, that have all been set to kill or extremely injure, and deal with the person and his crew who are behind it all.

I really enjoyed this adventure because it showcased how strong these two’s relationship has become and how they are still learning to utilize each other's abilities. Also I loved that throughout the whole adventure, they both were determined to save each other. I just love how hard these two have fallen for each other and how protective they are as well.

Overall, this was another fantastic adventure for these two. I look forward to the next adventure and how they plan to take down Holloway, and also deal with General Ocnus and Nerezza. Also, I want to see Asterin and her sister finally talk and repair their relationship so I hope that happens at some point.

Only Rogue Actions by Jennifer Estep. (Galactic Bonds, #5)

Reviews are subjective and what one reader may find enjoyable may not be some else's cup of tea.
My thoughts:
I like the the interesting flawed characters, great setting and supporting cast, lots of action and great world building. This series is a mash of space opera/science fiction with urban fantasy and historical romance mixed in. I read a lot of different genres and these books are delightful to read.
This is book 5 in the series and all books could be read as stand-alone books, but in my opinion these books are better when read in order. This book 5 focussed almost exclusively on the bond between Vesper and Kyrion. This book takes place about 2 weeks after the events in book 4 and reads as a background filler for the overall story arc for the series. I enjoyed the time spent with the characters and was engaged with the story. Great read.
I will re-read the books again just before the next book in the series is released.

Vesper Quill and Kyrion Caldaren are still hiding out from Holloway and others, but they've have been invited to train to improve upon and test their truebond. When they find out it's a maze constructed by the Erzton, they realize it's a bad, bad idea.

Nevertheless, they both enter the maze. Is there more going on than just training? Will they be able to use their truebond to reach each other?

There's always more than meets the eye in any Estep novel, and in the Galactic Bonds series, there are always people with rogue plans and rogue actions. Who are the good guys and who are rogue actors?

Lots of battles, lots of intrigue, and lots of sound effects...and few, if any, What-the-tuck trends (maybe a smirk or two, but that's about it). A worthy successor to the previous books, and already waiting for the next adventure for Vesper and Kyrion.

This book did not go where I thought it was going to go. One could say it went…rogue. And no, I will not apologize for that terrible pun.

Instead of a mad-dash sprint across the galaxy, we’re treated to a smaller (in scope) story of a training mission gone horribly wrong. The world-building is rich and detailed with creative obstacles and a focus on relationships and how each character handles conflict resolution in a different way. Vesper, the tinkerer, remains one of my favorite MCs. Her way of analyzing problems and tackling them from an engineering POV is both refreshing and inspiring. She’s a STEM girlie through and through!

Another enjoyable book in this series. This one, unfortunately doesn’t advance the overall series narrative. Rather, it’s more of a side quest (a training incident that goes wrong) where Vesper and Kyrion face danger and continue to strengthen their true bond.

This short book had a lot of Hunger Games vibes, with Vesper and Kyrion going through an arena with different biodomes and obstacles along their way. We see a little bit of Asterin and get some character arc for her, but it, again, doesn’t really move the arc of the series forward.

I actually enjoyed reading this book and it kept to the feel of the series thus far, but had hoped for more progress against the big enemies.

It wasn’t as sameish as some of the other books, and I appreciated the recap at the start, but it’s just such a detailed recap. At twenty percent it was still giving it, and I was very much over it by then. Just tell this story, not every preceding one. If someone uses this as a jumping off point in the series it’s their own problem if they get lost.
There’s plenty of action, is somewhat repetitive after a while, and not really much in the way of character interactions. There’s not really a point to the book, it seems to exist for the sake of existing. It’s fine but serves zero purpose. Unless the next book is the finale, I’m quitting here.

This was really more of an interlude novella. A nice diversion to the overarching plot and machinations of the people hunting Kyr and Vesper.
While it was a fun, quick read - it was more about Vesper and Kyrian showing off their skills and working through their true bond. The plots of the antagonists were connected to the main plots on the latest books- and we see some information being hinted at for future events - but nothing related to the main story is resolved or advanced.
It is very much a filler book, and while fun - not really essential to the series.

As the most notorious people in the galaxy, Vesper and Kyrion need to figure out how to work the great psychic power that comes with being a True Bond pair before the Imperium leader and the Tech Wave get them first. Jennifer Estep has kept up the sizzling excitement of action, suspense, and intrigue flowing around a developing pair of lovers through several books now. I was eager to get this latest and devoured it in one sitting.

I love this series — it’s my favorite space opera. Before reading it, I didn’t even know this genre was my thing, so I’m doubly attached: for introducing me to it and for being such a fun ride.

It’s always a joy to follow these two on their adventures. My only wish? Give me more — and maybe a novella or full novel about Aster, please. Thanks!

One tiny note for Estep, though: maybe use the word rogue just a bit less? I know it’s kind of a thing, but it was a little intense.
