Madison gives up a vacation to Cancún with her office friends to return home and babysit her mother, who is in another sketchy relationship. The only problem with returning home is running into Derek, her ex-boyfriend who she decided to break up with before he could break up with her—Madison believes in always being one step ahead. Madison’s choice to give up Cancún for family duty sets the stage for a charming second-chance romance filled with humor, heart, and just enough tension. Eden excels at banter and emotional undercurrents, especially as Madison confronts her need to always stay one step ahead—particularly where Derek is concerned. The investigation subplot adds a fun twist, though it resolves a bit neatly. Still, this is a warm, satisfying read, and the bonus epilogue is a delightful finishing touch.

sweet reconnect
