The whole world loves her. She loves only him. I just needed to get away from my life – the lights, the cameras, the obsessed fans. When I arrived in Crestwood, it seemed like the perfect place to hide. But on my very first day in town, I stumbled right into Nate Sullivan. Suddenly, I didn't mind being seen.
Nate has spent the last two years pretending everything is fine. He works the family ranch, shows up when his siblings need his help, and does it all with a forced smile. But the smile Nate gives me is absolutely dazzling. It only makes him even more irresistible and I can't help but fall for the handsome cowboy who looks at me like I'm an angel.
Crestwood was only supposed to be a short getaway, a temporary break from my life. But now that I know what it feels like to be kissed by Nate Sullivan, I'm not sure I'll ever be able to leave.
On the most part, this is a sweet romance with likable characters and I did like the romance between the MCs but where it got ruined for me is Hero’s feelings & past with OW. It’s so annoying because it brought nothing to the story and had author left it out, it would have been a 4/5 star read. But as usual, why not ruin their own story by inserting unnecessary crap that brings nothing to the story except annoyance. Great job there – NOT!
Heroine is a major movie star & singer who has stalkers after her and an OM who went public with some lies about a non-relationship which causes heroine to take a break by taking a mini vacation in a town that she thinks she can remain low key and unrecognizable. Hero is an ex-military man who has come home to help with his family’s ranch.
The two MCs meet and there are instant sparks and they immediately become fast friends and more as story progresses. This is a slow burn romance which I’m always grateful because I don’t like it when they jump into sex immediately and there’s nothing else. These two get to know and support each other. There’s also a little drama with a stalker who has followed heroine to town but that gets easily resolved towards the end.
One of things I liked about this is that author makes it clear throughout the story that heroine is rich and successful so I am happy for once to have something different than the usual of helpless and poorless heroines and billionaire Heroes! She was financially independent but came across as down to earth which I liked.
I also liked the family aspect here. The Hero’s family absolutely adored and supported heroine. They made her one of their own immediately and it was sweet to see because she didn’t have a good family background.
Initially the tile captured my attention as it seemed that it would have a heavy theme or something, but I would consider this falling on the light side as there is not much angst. The tile if I remember correctly has to do with her movie or song.
Now the part I hated is the OW mentions which even as little info as we got about it and one brief appearance at the end, it brought nothing to the story other than to aggravate me because I just don’t want to read about any prior relationships and the life he had with someone else.
So for the first half of the story, we learn that Hero had been in love in the past with someone named Fiona who had a young kid and he was deeply hurt and devastated when he lost both of them and we don’t find out the reason until the 70-80%. Up until the reason is revealed, he says he is broken and afraid he would ruin someone else’s life. So to me it felt like he was the one who screwed up (perhaps cheated) so when it is revealed what happened, I was stumped why author went there in the first place of him taking the blame initially because it was all the OW’s fault and not his!
Anyway, 5 years prior Hero had been in the military and hurt and while he was recovering in the hospital he met the OW who was a nurse and they started dating. She had a toddler daughter from a former relationship and Hero got so close to the kid that she started calling him Daddy. He literally thought the kid as his daughter and when OW said she was pregnant with his son, he immediately married her so they could become a family and so that he could adopt the daughter. Only it turned out that the son he thought was his turned out to be OM’s. Apparently the OW & her kids bio Daddy wanted to scam Hero out of his money so they came up with that plan for her to marry him by claiming she was pregnant with his kid. She was a liar, psycho and a cheater (he had walked into his home to find his wife was having sex in their bedroom with the OM) and annulled the marriage. That was 2 years prior. Yet when she continued to send him pictures of the kids every year long after they broke up, he didn’t put a stop of it or trash them. He came across as mourning that relationship at times because he missed the kid that he wanted to adopt and the other that turned out to not be his. At close to the end when OW comes back int the picture to slash heroine’s tires, we don’t see much anger or loathing coming from the Hero as one expects which is what bugged me here the most. He wanted “closure” from OW and it was the heroine who had her arrested. So for someone who was scammed & cheated on and tried to hurt his current GF (heroine), you would think he would loathe this OW and want to beat her ass, yet he wanted closure? And on top of that, he was concerned about the children with their mother in jail. For a minute there, I thought author would have heroine raise the OW’s kids. Lol. Fortunately that didn’t happen because the OW’s aunt had custody of the kids.
Author made him so clueless & needy especially with his conflicted feelings towards the OW. Some may disagree with me but I didn’t get the satisfaction of where he realized he felt nothing for OW and that he never loved her, etc. His “closure” at the end was the fact that he wanted to know why OW did what she did. Why she ruined their relationship. That tells a reader that he really loved the OW and she may still have a hold of him because by that point, he & heroine had been in a relationship and in love. Why did he care so much about why the bitch con-artist didn’t share his feelings? Why wasn’t he so upset that she tried to hurt his GF and rip her to shreds? She was using him throughout their relationship and cheating on him with OM. Couldn’t he get a clue that this bitch didn’t deserve an ounce of his time or feelings? It just felt wrong somehow that he wasn’t the one to give her the comeuppance and was still holding on to the hurt she inflicted on him. It was left to heroine to call the police and get her arrested. Why not him? Anyway, all those nice scenes & words towards the end of his feelings for heroine was not enough at that point to make me believe in their HEA.
I wish I had DNF’d it from the start as I’m now annoyed.
Okay BYE.
Safety:
No cheating No OP scenes past or present Hero not a Manho in the present. He said he forced himself to have occasional ONS from time to time to move on from OW but was never into it. He had two sexual partners (GF) in HS and a dozen or so in college. Heroine was a virgin. OW drama in the form I mentioned above when she comes back to cause trouble. OM drama in the form of a stalker who wants heroine but she doesn’t. HEA married with kids a few years later.
