Happy Habits: 7 Steps to Build a Happy Life by Dr Alex George. Ages 9–99

This uplifting non-fiction guide helps children navigate the seemingly complex idea of building healthier habits, not by breaking bad ones, but by creating better ones that take over simply because of how good they make us feel.
Dr Alex George approaches the topic in a wonderfully easy-going and conversational style, pitched perfectly for children (and the adults reading alongside them).
This isn’t a heavy, wordy self-help book; it’s more like having a friendly chat with a doctor. Chapters are broken up with cartoons, amusing sketches, jokes, and checklists that make the ideas easy to digest. Children will be learning without even realising it!
The book covers familiar areas such as nutrition and exercise, but also explores topics that will really resonate with children, like the importance of friendships and the joy of creativity. Everything is presented in a way that’s incredibly accessible, encouraging, and positive.
It’s the kind of book a child could confidently read alone, yet adults are bound to pick up a few valuable tips too. A fantastic resource for homes and schools alike, and one I’d recommend for SENCos, educational psychologists, pastoral staff, and headteachers.
Light-hearted, practical, and full of heart: Happy Habits truly lives up to its name.
