AdvocateBread of LifeCaptain… and more! Each short reflection connects to a Bible verse and includes age-appropriate questions and a prayer.
Perfect for read-aloud, this book works well for devotional times as a family or as parent-and-child, homeschooling, and Sunday school.
Alistair Begg has been in pastoral ministry since 1975. Following graduation from The London School of Theology, he served eight years in Scotland at both Charlotte Chapel in Edinburgh and Hamilton Baptist Church.
In 1983, he became the senior pastor at Parkside Church near Cleveland, Ohio. He has written several books and is heard daily and weekly on the radio program, Truth For Life. The teaching on Truth For Life stems from the week by week Bible teaching at Parkside Church.
This book is the follow-up to respected pastor and author Alistair Begg’s children’s book C is for Christian: An A-Z Treasury of Who We Are in Christ. He writes that in this book he is going to tell the reader about the most remarkable person - Jesus - who ever lived, and he is going to use 26 words to do it. While 26 words are nowhere near enough to describe Him – there could never be enough words to sum up His greatness – hopefully the 26 words Begg has chosen will help the reader see how amazing He is and how exciting it is to know Him. Each of the words start with a different letter of the alphabet, beginning with “Advocate”. Begg offers a one-page reflection that explains in more detail how Jesus fulfills each word. He also offers a Bible verse, a colorful illustration by Emma Skerrat (who also illustrated the first book) to aid learning and memory, thoughtful discussion questions, and a prayer—making this book both engaging and spiritually formative for children and families. Children can read the book themselves or they can use it with others in their family, enjoying reading and answering the questions and praying together. Also, if you teach an elementary-age Sunday School class, J is for Jesus is perfect for helping young children come to know Jesus in a personal way by exploring one word that describes Him each week. The author’s desire is that as the reader works through this book they will become more and more amazed by Jesus, and that they will want to live with Him as their Lord, Savior and Friend. The book is recommended for ages 5-7.
J is for Jesus is a must-have companion to C is for Christian!
Using the alphabet, Alistair Begg has thoughtfully chosen 26 words to describe Jesus. Kids often hear that Jesus died for them because he loved them, but do they know terms like- Redeemer? Overcomer? Advocate? This biblically sound treasury is for all ages and will help kids understand the character of Jesus on a deeper level, bringing your child’s heart closer to Jesus.
This book would make a perfect daily reading! There is a Bible verse associated with every letter as well as a short reading (less than a page), some questions to think about, and a prayer.
Each letters word is creatively and beautifully incorporated into the illustration. I especially enjoyed the J being shaped as a little boy jumping for Joy, the F looking like a Faithful dog, and the M as trees as Jesus weeps underneath for Man of Sorrows. Emma Skerratt’s colorful and eye-catching illustrations really make this treasury something special and unique.
While kids of all ages will be captivated by the illustrations, they will also enjoy the simplicity of the readings. I love all the questions throughout that keep kids engaged and get them talking about Jesus in ways they may not have considered before.
I highly recommend adding this stunning treasury to your home libraries. Ultimately, it causes you and your children to sit and ponder about Jesus, and why the only thing that truly matters in this life is following Him. What more can you ask for?
*I was sent a copy of this book by The Good Book Company in exchange for my honest review.
J is for Jesus is a thoughtfully structured and beautifully illustrated introduction to who Jesus is, designed especially for young readers. Ages: 5–8
Organized from A to Z, each letter highlights an aspect of Christ’s identity—Advocate, Bread of Life, Captain, and beyond—giving children a foundational theology in an accessible and memorable format. The structure is clear and consistent, which makes it ideal for devotional reading over time rather than all at once.
What stands out most is how each entry connects directly to Scripture. The reflections are brief, age-appropriate, and anchored in biblical truth. Each section includes a Bible verse, thoughtful questions to prompt discussion, and a short prayer, making this an excellent tool for family devotions, homeschooling, or Sunday school settings.
Emma Skerratt’s illustrations are warm, inviting, and visually engaging without being distracting. The artwork complements the theological content well, helping children connect emotionally as well as intellectually.
This book does not oversimplify who Jesus is, yet it presents deep truths in a way children can understand. It balances doctrinal clarity with pastoral warmth—something not always easy to achieve in children’s theology resources.
Parents looking for a Christ-centered, Scripture-grounded resource to help children grow in their understanding of Jesus will find this a valuable addition to their home library.
I received a complimentary copy and was under no obligation to leave a positive review.

A right understanding of the character of Jesus is foundational to our faith and so we love this resource that helps support parents in helping their kids build that important theological foundation. The A-Z format with brief readings lends itself perfectly to our morning family devotions or to evening read-alouds. The illustrations are exquisitely detailed & captivating, drawing kids to consider the specific character aspect of Jesus as they explore each of the 26 full-color drawings. This is a solid resource for helping families as a whole grow in their knowledge, understanding, and love for Jesus!
Thank you to the publisher for a complimentary book in exchange for an honest review. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
This is the sequel "C is for Christian" from the same author and illustrator. I used that book as a devotional to my daughter and definitely I'll use this one too. The last book is more focus on being a Christian, now this superb book is all about Jesus Christ. I like how the first pages immediately points Jesus as Savior these initial pages gives us the gospel. Start with that means a lot for parents who wants their kids not just to know Jesus but be their Savior and Lord as well. The rest of the books are full of His role and description of who is which really push us to go further to know Him biblically. Emma Skerratt illustrates this book giving us some awesome amazing letterforms with a vintage touch in every pages. I highly recommend this book!
My middle two kids (ages 6 & 4) and I have been reading through this book together and have been so blessed.
This family devotional uses the 26 letters of the English alphabet to describe Jesus in 26 ways. Although the author is quick to point out that 26 letters are nowhere near enough to describe Him, it’s a great beginning. And an easy way to memorize 26 truths about Jesus. Each letter/page is followed by a brief prayer, which my daughter claims as her part of the read aloud.
The illustrations really are so memorable too, as they have the featured letter as part of the illustration.
Highly recommend this one. Thank you @thegoodbookcompanyusa for sending it to me to review!
This is a beautifully designed and theologically robust devotional for children ages 5 and up. Each letter of the alphabet is associated with a truth about Jesus (an effective memorization tool), and each letter has a short devotional. Also included at the end of the devotionals are a few easy-to-understand reflection questions and a short prayer. If parents are looking to include their children in family worship time or are looking to have a short devotional time with their children at the beginning or end of the day, this would be a good resource to look into.
Here's a delightful book for devotions and family worship with your kids. It's all about who and what Jesus is. These 26 devotions (following the alphabet) are short enough for the wigglers and wrigglers. Each one is based on a Bible verse. And the pictures are easy on the eyes and attractive. If you find purported pictures of Jesus a problem you need to know that there are a few in this glossy volume. Written by Alistair Begg, it is solid and just right. I highly recommend it.
