Susanna: Journey To My Dream

Rate this book
This book is a saga of perseverance, following one family’s astonishing rise spanning three generations, four continents and three wars.
From tiny shtetls in a Russian settlement, through the horrific realities of Communism, an exodus from behind the Iron Curtain, struggles to start a new in Israel, where they found themselves fighting in the Yom Kippur War, years in exotic and turbulent Africa, where the heroes of this saga lived through a coup d’état – to finally arriving at Lady Liberty’s shores.
Who could ever dream that Susan Levit, a girl from a small Soviet town, would one day become a recipient of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, an award given to those who became inspired by the American dream and fully realized it.
The story of her life may seem like a fairy-tale, but it is the tale of a spirit that refused to give up and shined brightly despite all obstacles – the true story of a remarkable person.

This book is an amazing journey with the author through her life experiences. She is an excellent story-teller, making readers feel as if they are in the very time and place she brings them to. Whether it be in Soviet Russia reminiscing about childhood days with her family, despite the dangers lurking around them. Or in Siberia for medical school in a brutal environment. In warm sunny Israel after a difficult exit from frigid Russia, only to face the Yom Kippur war. Or during the challenging years in Africa, with two young children, where she accompanies her husband during his architectural engineering assignment there. At last, reaching the shores of the USA as she reaches further toward her goal of becoming a doctor in this country; she starts her own practice with the help of her devoted husband. Learning two new languages to continue medical studies while in Israel and then in America, ending up receiving the Ellis Island Medal of Honor for her achievements and perseverance. There's much more, but I'll save that for the reader to discover, because this is one of those books that keeps the reader engrossed page after page. Highly Recommend.
