A lot to unpack is Porta MacIntosh's next release, this time we follow Liberty while she navigates life after a breakup that leads her to a new job, a new house and a lot of new experiences.
i decided to request this title because I found the premise interesting, and I'm a sucker for romance books about rivals in a workplace setting. Unfortunately, the execution didn't convince me. The FMC was pretty annoying from the start, but I decided to continue reading anyway in the hopes that he would become more likeable as the story went on. But then as I kept going I only found more things that didn't fully convince me. The plot was kinda all over the place, the chapters jumped from one place or time frame to another without any real connection, making it feel like they were completely separate from each other and like they had no place being one after the other.
The connection between the main characters didn't convince me, there was nothing in here that sold their love story to me. This read more like a book about traveling than a romance, maybe that was the true love interest? I don't know.
I really wanted to like this, because I've been eyeing this author's works for a while but sadly this wasn't for me. I might have to check her other works, tho!!

No spice 🫑 (closed door/fade to black)
1st person pov FMC only (she is talking to the reader sometimes.. idk what that’s called)
I found this to be predictable and unenjoyable. It is barely a romance, and it’s marketed as “forced proximity”… not really. The romantic aspect between the two MCs doesn’t start until 75% and that’s just not what I’m looking for in a book marketed as a romance.
I also mega-loath when avoidable mishaps fuel the plot just to fit the narrative. That’s what this is.
I don’t want to beat a dead horse here… but she came up with a ploy to sneak into his room by buying a cake and sending it to the front desk… it didn’t work. So why not just do that again when he’s leaving for the day.. or bribe a cleaning lady.. or when he LEAVES THE DOOR UNLOCKED go through it!! well, it didn’t fit the narrative.
I also have a prejudice against the term “ick” and it’s used about 19474940 times, so I was in constant state of cringe over that, but that could be a personal problem.
This story is for someone, but that someone is not me. Writing was fine though and the story was sensible with funny moments.

This was such a cute, quick read! As someone who met my person through a dating app, I found the story both relatable and hilarious. The characters had that perfect mix of charm and chemistry that kept me smiling the whole way through. Honestly, it gave me total Hallmark-level cuteness in book form and I loved every bit of it!

I absolutely adore Portia MacIntosh’s writing, and A Lot to Unpack was no exception. It’s a fun, feel-good escape—packed with laughs, chaos, and just the right touch of romance. Exactly the kind of lighthearted read I was looking for.
The narrative followed Liberty who thought she’d scored her dream job at a popular dating app, but things got complicated fast. Not only was the company tied to her ex, who humiliated her with his online behavior, but her very first assignment threw her back into close quarters with him. She was sent to New York on a secret mission while juggling work, old wounds, and the undeniable chemistry that still lingered. The more time she spent with Jordan, the less he looked like the villain she thought he was. Added to that her no-nonsense boss—and the rule that she absolutely cannot fall for him, Liberty suddenly had a lot more to handle than she ever had expected.
This was the second novel I’ve read by MacIntosh—the first being Going Overboard, which I absolutely devoured for its witty, engaging narrative. In the same way, I was completely absorbed in her newest release, A Lot to Unpack. It’s a lighthearted rom-com filled with humor, banter, and entertaining twists. I really enjoyed Liberty as a main character—she’s funny, relatable, and so easy to root for—and the New York backdrop added the perfect escapist vibe. The mix of tropes, from forced proximity to the classic “don’t fall for your boss” rule, kept the story playful and fun. Jordan, too, was charming and confident, with an easy charisma that made him hard to ignore. That said, some parts felt a little predictable, with coincidences that were too convenient, and a few side characters lacked depth beyond their comedic roles. The romance also took its time to spark, which was a bit frustrating at times, but overall this was a charming, feel-good read that delivered exactly the kind of rom-com escape I was hoping for.
Overall, Portia MacIntosh delivered another fun, feel-good rom-com that had me laughing, cringing, and rooting for Liberty from start to finish. If you enjoy lighthearted, escapist rom-coms with plenty of humor, awkward situations, and playful banter, you’ll want to read this one.

This book gave me belly laughs! (I was reading on a plane part of the time, and had to chortle quietly!) Our main character Liberty was kind of a mess really, but a lovable mess who gets herself caught up in some of the funniest moments—sometimes her own fault! This was the perfect first person narrative, as her self-talk was hilarious and poignant at the same time. This book is a great escape, the perfect story to entertain you, to make you laugh, and even swoon a little. I received an early copy of this book from the publisher.

This book was so good I binged it in one setting! It's a fast, easy read and I highly recommend picking it up. I loved the travel and destination descriptions throughout the book.

Since Liberty and Ben also work together, Liberty quits her job in order to never see him again and moves out of their place together.

I really liked the premise and idea of this book, however, for me the execution just feel a bit flat. I liked the way that Liberty spoke to the reader (I love a fourth wall break), but I couldn't tell what any of her personality was like - besides mildly annoying. It did, I think, feel like it needed an extra draft, and at least a further edit. Some plot points felt unnecessary and overly long, with very little character relevance and a lot of rambling.
All in all, a great concept and plot ideas, but not very well executed. Just felt a bit flat.

Another amazing book from Portia Macintosh!! I think I love everything she writes!!
They were sooo cute!!!
We have employee x boss, forced proximity (kinda) and an undercover mission!
Liberty was a badass who didn’t stand for any rubbish. After her ex did her dirty she was not about to let any guy wrong her again and when she met Jordan, you could tell that there was going to be something big happen between them! They are perfect for each other <3
Omg what isn’t there to love about Jordan!!! He was the perfect guy! He wanted her to have the best date and knew she loved sex in the city, so he took her to all the hotspots!! He honestly just wanted to be there for her and be the one she needed! I loved them a lot!
He just trusts in her and doesn’t get mad when something happens he just waits for her to explain! She was so good for Jordan as well they’ve both been through similar situation so can understand what dating is like and it’s so nice they found each other!
I did really enjoy this book it was very short so wasn’t a lot of stakes but it was really cozy and a nice book to lose yourself in for a couple hours <3

Liberty just got a new job at the Matcher dating app that she's not fond of,not after she found her boyfriend using it to send pictures to other women.The plus is thanks to this job she's travelling and dating again,well she's trying to but each date is worse then the other,and Liberty is losing hope that she ever find the right guy.When her boss send her to switch important documents that can put company and workers at risk,Liberty don't think twice to spy on Jordan and find the paperwork.What is supposed to be a job soon changing to something more,as Jordan is nothing like she expected,and they actually getting to know each other.
Will Liberty choose job or love?
It was a fun rom com,enjoyable and funny I didn't want to put it down.The dates Liberty force herself to go were hilarious an awkward.Chemistry between her and Jordan was great,and I really liked him.He was sweet and fun.I'm happy with the ending and hope to read more of author books.

This is the first book by this author that I have physically read, I usually listen to her audiobooks read by the great Karen Cass.
I loved reading this one because it's in a casual first-person POV. The humor is like reading a diary. This light-hearted romcom follows Liberty through a break up that ultimately results in a job change. She works through a moral dilemma, and eventually, all things work together for good. Portia doesn't really do slowburns, but the build-up to the relationship with the MMC is cute. Jordan easily became one of my favorite MMCs by this author because he's uncomplicated, communicates well, and trusts Liberty. There is no spice; all love scenes fade to black/are closed door.

this woman is the freida mcfadden of british rom com books. are all of her FMCs bascially the same? (blonde)? yes! and i dont care!!! i will use my hoopla* holds on this woman every time god i dont know what she's putting in these.
content wise, i was literally learning about contracts in my business law class and i think this book begs the excellent question of if the contract is switched, would he like be able to sue? idk i have a b in law before attendance points are added (but someone has perfect attendance soooo...!!! let me see that A baby!!!)
i just love how ridiculous every situation in here is. you know what? sure lets have attatched rooms and let me forget the contract in your room. and sure. why not. let me take a random gig being a personal assistant where my only role is to fly around the world. now that's the dream. i get $9.75 to say hi to people and be ignored at the front desk!
all of her books nothing kinda happens in the first oh 50 or so percent, but that's part of the charm. i eat it up everytime.
*as of now writing this review, my library has cut ties with hoopla... i did voice my disappointment to the worker at the library very politely, but god ill miss reading 2 of these a month. RIP hoopla, i would pay your fees myself if i could.

I absolutely love Portias' writing style. This was a fun, witty read with a touch of romance. It kept me on my toes. Every time I thought I knew where we were going, Portia had me guessing again. The string of terrible dates was hilarious to read (poor Liberty)
Liberty was chaotic and hilarious with a pure heart. I was so glad she made the right decision in the end.
Jordan was calm, assured, and emotionally mature.

This was my first ever Portia MacIntosh and it certainly wont be my last. Was such a easy quite read, super funny and relatable. Closed door/No spice. Rated 5 stars cant wait to read another book by this author.

Thank you NetGalley and Boldwood books for this arc. I’ve enjoyed reading Portia MacIntosh so I looked forward to this. It was still a fun read, however I could not move past how many times “ick” was mentioned. I got the point after the first few and could have done without most. Overall, cute easy read!

My Review: A Lot to Unpack by Portia MacIntosh is "A BRAND NEW forced proximity, rivals-to-lovers romcom." It is scheduled for release on 10/2/25.
About the Book: "Liberty’s just landed her dream job. The catch? It’s at Matcher, the dating app that ruined her life."
In My Own Words: A young woman who escaped a cringeworthy relationship lands herself in a compromising position with a man who himself has to deal with a cringe factor.
About the Characters:
Liberty - Her strength and conviction wavered at times. She came across as clueless, although she eventually wised up. It was understandable that she didn't trust herself, especially after the ticking time bombs in her life. Whew!
Jordan - I really liked this character. He was a good guy who was misunderstood. He went through the wringer and didn't deserve it. Allowing himself to peel back the layers with Liberty was a big tell.
As Liberty and Jordan interacted more, they were able to "see" each other in a different light. They both ended up having to make choices that impacted themselves as individuals and each other as part of a more than couple.
My Final Say: Where do I begin with this one?! There was so much to consider in this story. The characters, the conflict, the backstory drama, the toxic relations - it was a hot mess of an explosion. It sure made for entertaining reading, though.
I don't think I have read a book quite like this before. I suppose I would say that alone qualifies it as being original. The thing that sent out a glaring red alert had to be the unethical practices. Man oh man! (If I really got into it the way I wanted, I would tell too much. All I will say is that the underhanded practices and manipulative deceptions in play were messed up and made me question character agency. Yikes!)
Other: This is a mixed bag read, in my opinion. As such, I will say that I think some readers may like this story and some may not like certain aspects of the story.
Readers who enjoy forced proximity, workplace relationships, and rivals to lovers tropes might go for this one.

In My Own Words: A young woman who escaped a cringeworthy relationship lands herself in a compromising position with a man who himself has to deal with a cringe factor.
About the Characters:
Liberty - Her strength and conviction wavered at times. She came across as clueless, although she eventually wised up. It was understandable that she didn't trust herself, especially after the ticking time bombs in her life. Whew!
Jordan - I really liked this character. He was a good guy who was misunderstood. He went through the wringer and didn't deserve it. Allowing himself to peel back the layers with Liberty was a big tell.
As Liberty and Jordan interacted more, they were able to "see" each other in a different light. They both ended up having to make choices that impacted themselves as individuals and each other as part of a more than couple.
My Final Say: Where do I begin with this one?! There was so much to consider in this story. The characters, the conflict, the backstory drama, the toxic relations - it was a hot mess of an explosion. It sure made for entertaining reading, though.
I don't think I have read a book quite like this before. I suppose I would say that alone qualifies it as being original. The thing that sent out a glaring red alert had to be the unethical practices. Man oh man! (If I really got into it the way I wanted, I would tell too much. All I will say is that the underhanded practices and manipulative deceptions in play were messed up and made me question character agency. Yikes!)
Other: This is a mixed bag read, in my opinion. As such, I will say that I think some readers may like this story and some may not like certain aspects of the story.
Readers who enjoy forced proximity, workplace relationships, and rivals to lovers tropes might go for this one.

I received an ARC copy from NetGalley and Boldwood Books — and I’ll admit I’m a little late with this review, so apologies for the delay!
This book was such a fun read. At first, it felt a little unrealistic for a romcom, but honestly, that made it all the more exciting and fresh. It definitely gave me Bridget Jones’s Diary vibes, and I loved how the FMC, Liberty, often feels like she’s talking directly to the reader — almost like she’s breaking the fourth wall at times.
The first part of the story focuses on Liberty’s breakup with her ex and leaving behind the job and home they built together. She ends up working for a dating app company called Matcher, where she’s basically on stand-by for when her boss needs her — which leads to her jetting around the world and enduring a series of hilariously awful dates with men who give her major “ick” vibes.
The second half shifts to New York, where she’s sent on a secret mission to spy on one of Matcher’s bosses, Jordan Bill. Her task? Discreetly swap out a contract. Of course, things don’t go quite to plan.
I also can’t forget the mystery man she chats with on the company’s work app… but I’ll leave that one for you to discover because spoilers!
I adored all the Sex and the City references, and Liberty’s resilience really stood out. Even when things didn’t go her way, she kept her chin up and stayed hopeful.

This fun-filled RomCom was precisely what I needed, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. There are a few tropes involved, but that was fine and didn’t spoil my entertainment; in fact, I do enjoy a few of them, including forced proximity.
Liberty is the female protagonist, and she’s easy to like. Horribly mistreated by her boyfriend, she finds herself single, jobless and homeless as a direct result of his activity on the dating app, Matcher. She’s determined to bounce back, but finding a new job proves to be a challenge until she accidentally gets hired by one of the directors of Matcher. That element was a bit of a stretch, but I was happy to ignore the fact as I was having fun with the story. Despite her apprehension, she finds that her new role is a breeze and adjusts to the knowledge that she definitely exaggerated her skills and experience. That, in itself, was a rich source of comedy. Liberty loved her family, even her attention-seeking cousin, but moving back home felt like a definite fail, so she accepted her new position and enjoyed the perks of flying around the world at a moment’s notice. Nice work, if you can get it!
Jordan, the other director, doesn’t match the description that Liberty has been given, and I must say, I thought he was a lovely guy. He’s still a little raw from the breakdown of his marriage and wary of dating again. What he is really concerned about is the way the Matcher app is being used and is mortified to discover that Liberty’s ex had been using it to distribute inappropriate images. I shan’t use the term, but ladies do not appreciate them, especially unsolicited ones.
This book was a lot of fun and an easy read. It provided humour and touching moments in fair measure, keeping me turning the pages, eager to find out what would happen next. A particular highlight for me was the visit to New York, a destination I would love to explore, and at least I had a virtual escape, which was a real treat.
I can happily recommend this book and hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

This was a right place right time sort of book for me, because wow I needed it and it picked me up.
I loved reading this book, Liberty had me in hysterics whilst I was reading (yes in public) and I struggled to put it down. I actually think it might put me in a ‘no book can compare’ post read slump.
What did I like, I liked the 3rd person narration from Liberty. She was relatable. Whilst I wasn’t really fond of the ‘ick radar’ and how often it was repeated, it was so relatable and funny to read along.

Yes you could see how it was going towards the end, although I thought it would have been a bit more of a fight from Liberty’s side, and I wasn’t left desperate for more. I mean I could read another book based around Liberty but it ended nice and with the possibility of wanting more.
The reason it’s 5 stars, well I enjoyed it. A book that makes me laugh out loud on public transport is a book I’d recommend over and over.

Portia MacIntosh delivers another delightful rom-com in A Lot to Unpack—a fun, feel-good escape full of humor, chaos, and second-chance sparks. I really enjoyed her book, "Going Overboard". SO when I saw this one and quickly registered for an opportunity to read an advanced copy. In " A lot to Unpack" Liberty thinks she’s landed her dream job at a dating app, only to discover her ex is part of the company—and her first big assignment throws them back together in New York. Between old wounds, new rules, and lingering chemistry, she quickly realizes there’s a lot more to unpack than just her suitcase. This story has everything I look for in a rom com: sharp banter, relatable characters, and plenty of awkwardly funny moments. Liberty is a charming, easy-to-root-for heroine, and Jordan’s charisma makes their dynamic irresistible. Some parts are a bit predictable, but the humor and heart more than make up for it. A charming, escapist read that’s perfect for fans of witty, lighthearted romance. If you like Abby Jimenez or Emily Henry, add this to your TBR.

I williterally read anything Portar writes because theyre fun and funny and yes they probably bacally halve the same stary dont know what kinda hold she has over me but if she wintes it sign me up to read at In this one Liberty finds out her boyfriend is cheating, so they breskup and she is left to find a nirs place te te st the same lime She also has to find a new job because they worked together She goes for an interview at Mather alling app, and even though she doesnt love dating apps, she lakes it because the fit sounds snaring ty to aferent can and test out the app and report back But then her boss has her shooping into the other partner in its ages whethe happens to be her ex husbond Jordan. Liberty's infatuated with Jordan and nothing at all the what her boss made hom out to be Should she nsk her job and not do what shes asked and act on her feeings or sheuid she stay preferaner?

I do love Portia MacIntosh's light-hearted rom coms, and was thrilled to read this one, A Lot To Unpack.
Liberty finds her partner, Ben, has been sending inappropriate pics of himself to others, via a dating app, Matcher. After a rather dramatic relationship end, she finds herself with no boyfriend, no job and no home.
An opportunity arises, though it seems too good to be true. Plus, it is working for Matcher, the app that ruined her life!
I thoroughly enjoyed Liberty's antics as she tries to ingratiate herself into the dating world with a LOT of caution, and the situation she finds herself in, during the last third of the story, is just brilliant!
There is lust, kind of proximity, not quite enemy to lovers, but hot boss syndrome going on!
And the ending was just fab! Came through in the end!

This book is witty, clever and has some great strong characters.
It really does make you laugh out loud.
When Liberty lands her perfect sounding job, could it just be too good to be true? With an intricately weaved plot, and characters who you just don’t know whether to trust or not, be ready for a funny tale of travel and maybe a little romance.
Would you seriously take a job you didn’t know what it entails, and fly off round the world? Absolutely not. Do I want to read about Liberty doing it and all the crazy things that happen along the way? Absolutely!!
This really is packed with humour and written in that wonderful way I’ve come to expect from Portia’s books. I just know I’m in for a fun ride, which will make me smile and distract me from real life for a while.

Portia just gets it with her books. Another one ive loved and devoured.
Her characters are always relatable and with this one being centred around dating apps, a lot of people can relate. In true Portia style there were plenty of laugh out loud scenes and the ending was just perfect and I cant wait to read the next one from Portia.

It was fun and quick to read. However, I don't think this book is for me. I enjoyed the main character and the love interest, but I didn't really see their chemistry or their story start. I feel like that part was a bit rushed and not exactly well done.
