When your own body betrays you, who is there left to trust?
My life wasn’t perfect, but it was pretty damn close. A loving fiancé, a great job, the best group of friends a girl could ask for.
Until one routine doctor’s visit shattered it all.
Now, that near-perfect life is unraveling right before my eyes. And Gunnar, the man who loves me beyond all reason, is doing everything he can to keep me together.
But the harder he tries to fix me, to protect me, the more out of control I feel. The more desperate I become to reclaim even one tiny sliver of the independence my diagnosis has stolen from me.
And when our conflicting needs threaten to tear us apart at the seams, I’m forced to decide if what scares me the most is losing the man I love…
Shannon Elliot resides in Houston, TX with her fur baby and writes romance that represents her readers whenever she's not at the dog park dog or curled up with a good book. Evidenced by her background in theatre, she is drawn to story-telling and the creative process. Shannon believes that diverse and inclusive stories shouldn't be the exception, they should be the rule. Happily ever after is for everyone and she aims to write romances that reflect her readers.
Great premise and I love the push and pull between the two MCs in terms of how they navigate change and health issues while also continually showing thier love and lust for each other!
I think t he swirl of emotions, doubts, and conversations are all very real and it definitely added to the story.
Selene has spent her whole life being the caretaker – the steady one, the strong one, the glue that held everyone together.
But after Selene gets her diagnosis, everything seems to shift. Suddenly, she's the one who's unravelling...and she doesn't know how to ask for help without feeling like a burden.
Gunnar is trying his best. He loves Selene in the only way he knows how – with all the protectiveness in him, with structure and all his suffocating kindness. But Selene doesn't need someone to manage her. She needs someone to see her.
The more Gunnar tries to fix everything, the more Selene feels herself slipping away – slipping away from her body, from her plans, from them.
And that's when Selene realizes that maybe the scariest part isn't the illness itself.
Maybe it's realizing that love alone might not be enough to hold them together.
Cherished is a raw, intimate story about identity, chronic illness, and the terrifying vulnerability of loving – and staying – in the middle of the storm.
YOU'RE MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS!!! Please read and pay close attention to the trigger warnings at the beginning of this book. There is some content and scenes in this book that are not suitable for all readers and could be triggering for others. Always remember that your mental health comes first at all times.
Cherished is the 3rd book in The Playground Club by Shannon Elliot. This story is a bit different in that it follows an already established couple, Selene and Gunner.
Selene is the steady one, the one who has always had the strength of a giant, the glue that's held everyone together, she's always been the caretaker, it's been the role she's spent her entire life fulfilling. It's what she's always known. Even in her IT job, her co-workers have always known that they could go to her for anything they needed.
But, while wedding dress shopping Selene collapses and is rushed to the hospital. That's when she gets the diagnosis. Diabetes. In that one moment everything seems to shift and in that one moment she feels like it she's the one who's unravelling. And what's worse, she doesn't know how to ask for help without feeling like a burden, she's never had to ask for help in her life and she doesn't know how.
Gunner, Selene's fiancé is doing his best to be there for the woman who is his world. He loves and adores Selene and he'll do anything for her and love her the only way he knows how – he'll love Selene with all the protectiveness that he has in him not realizing that Selene is feeling suffocated in his kindness. The other thing that Selene doesn't need anyone mico-managing her. What Selene truly needs is to see her for her.
Gunner feels lost in Selene's diagnosis and he does what he can to try and fix everything for her. But, the more that Gunner tries to fix everything the more that Selene feels like she's slipping away and losing herself, slipping away from her very body, from all her plans, from all her friends even from Gunner.
But, Selene realizes that maybe it's not the illness itself that's the scariest part. Maybe it is actually realizing that love alone might not be enough to hold her and Gunner together after all the changes they have had to face.
Cherished is such a beautiful story and I absolutely loved how characters from Bound and Used are such an integral part of this story and how we get updates into their stories in the process. And it was fun how we got cameos from the Angels/Devils duet characters. But, as beautiful as this story was, it was also devastating at the same time and Selene and Gunner's story broke my heart in so many ways.
Gunner and Selen's story was enjoyable, even though the topics were difficult at times and honestly, I found the topics hard to read. But, I loved to see the character growth and development not only as individual characters but also as a couple.
I loved watching how Gunner and Selene had to learn how to navigate the changes in health issues while they also continually managed to show their love and still manage to show and maintain their lust for each other.
I felt like the sudden development, or at least learning that Selene had developed diabetes, all the emotions, doubts, and all the conversations felt real and genuine, and added such depth to the story and made it feel that much more real.
I really loved the secondary characters like Bex, Alvie, Cy, Ember, Naomie, Elise, Lena, Zuri, and Marshall added so much to the story. They were all well developed, well-rounded, and added so much humour and sincerity to the story. They felt like they really were your best friends or the people you would call when you needed your people around you.
Cherished is the story that I would recommend to anyone and everyone and Shannon Elliot did an amazing job writing this book and I can't wait to read what she writes next.
Cherished by Shannon Elliot is the third book in The Playground Club series. This book is spicy and heart-wrenching. I loved the premise and plot of this book. I have read a couple of Shannon's books and was excited to read and review this one! I haven't read the first two books, but I was able to follow the characters and plot well without them. However, we jump into the characters being friends and together, which I'm sure the early books explain. I wasn't missing anything from not reading the first two.
Selene is a hyper-independent FMC with a heavy fear of commitment and relying on others. So when she is planning her wedding, and things already feel overwhelming, and now she has a new diagnosis, she doesn't know if she can handle someone trying to take care of her so closely. Gunner is a man who knew what he wanted, and that was Selene from the moment he saw her, and he has been obsessed with her since, so when she receives her diagnosis, he goes a little overboard in research, lifestyle, and hovering to make sure she is well taken care of. This, however, is not what Selene needed or wanted.
I loved seeing that there are adult issues that actually strain a relationship, and how they work through this. I love seeing chronic illness represented in books and not all positive and them struggling with just it, but also how it can tear relationships apart and what it takes from both parties, not just the chronically ill one. I think this book was fun to read and made me want to read the first two books in the series to get more of the background of everyone and fall in love with these characters more. I would recommend picking up a book if you love hot spicy scenes, gut-wrenching romance, plus-size babes, and men that will do anything for them!
Thank you to Shannon Elliot for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This is the third book in the series this book had me all over in my emotions I'm an emotional person. We have out main character Selena and Gunnar we see them in a previous book so glad they get their own book. Selena charter I feel and see her in myself with always being the person to take care other people but have trouble when other people take care of you but let me tell you about Gunnar he is the such a sweet heart that when ever Selena push back he didn't go away, there are some things in the book that had me in the feel this dose have a good rep for mental illness. It is very important to take care of your mental health. The tropes in the books rang from found family, Caregiver, plus size fmc and many more. Make sure to read the trigger warnings in the book before reading it is always important. thank you to Shannon for the Arc.
I was given an ARC of this book for an honest review. This book is the 3rd book in the Playground Club and I loved it. Please make sure to read the triggers.
It’s always a breath of fresh air to see adults dealing with adult issues. Selene who is the caretaker gets diagnosed with an illness and must learn how to ask for help.
But she has Gunnar! He is your traditional golden retriever boyfriend who is trying to find a way to be the caretaker she needs.
I mainly took away the star because there were points when Selene just needed to get out of her own way. As someone who does have a similar trait I get where she was coming from but I needed less of it.
Overall it was a great story and the spice is just so delicious. I love the way Shannon writes her spice so when I was asked to ARC this I was on board.
I am really loving The Playground Club series. This one is about Gunnar and Selene, a couple that are already together. Please read the triggers before reading this book.
Everything seems to be going so well for them until one is diagnosed with a chronic illness. Selene is so used to being the one taking care of everyone but really struggles with asking for or getting help when she needs it
Gunnar is such an amazing guy and wants to love and take care of Selene but they are both struggling.
This book touches on things and you see that they both need to work on themselves too. Will Selene and Gunnar be able to figure out everything they need to and be a strong couple again? Read this book to find out.
Used by Shannon Elliot was one of my top reads of 2024 so I was really looking forward to this next book in the series. I’ll be honest, this one took a little bit for me to get into. Selene and Gunner were not a likable characters for me, however, Shannon Elliot was still able to create a beautiful story for them. This book was a sort of 2nd chance romance as Selene and Gunner are already an established couple and I enjoyed the journey of them finding each other again. My only complaint was I wished they communicated more, but hey, I’ve been married for 6 years and still have communication issues so take what I say with a grain of salt.
This story, I have been waiting for it since we learned about the Playground Club in Devil in the Dark. It’s not like most of the romances you read, this couple is established they’re just having to navigate changed in their relationship. I love how much the characters from Bound and Used are an integral part of the progress and we get updates to their stories too. We also get some cameos from the Angels/Devils duet characters!
I really enjoyed reading about Gunnar and Selene, even the tough stuff that is hard to read but so important to their character growth and development as a couple. When 2 vastly different personalities collide there are bound to be some hiccups along the way, they just need to learn to process and proceed together.
Cherished ARC Review Selene doesn’t deserve Gunnar and I stand by that 😤
Gunnar just want to love and take care of her but Selene can’t get out of her own way 🙄
Overall, I was happy to finally read Gunnar and Selene’s story since we met them at the end of Devil in the Dark! I would have loved to see more of how they moved forwarded and overcame their struggles post-wedding.

I’ve been excited for this story since the Playground Club was first introduced in Devil in the Dark. Unlike most romances, it follows an already established couple as they work through changes in their relationship. I loved the updates on characters from Bound and Used, plus the cameos from the Angels/Devils duet. Gunnar and Selene’s journey wasn’t always easy, but their struggles and growth made their story both heartfelt and rewarding.
I'd like to thank the author for providing me an ARC copy of this book 🩷
I loved how the couple worked through the changes in their relationship (even though they were already established from the start). The journey definitely wasn't easy but I enjoyed reading Selene and Gunnar's character growth. On top of that, the author included characters from Bound and Used as well 🩷. Overall, it was an amazing read (love the spice in it as well).
What an amazing read! Two people who have so much love for each other, both compliment each other so well. They met at The Playground on opening night. Their chemistry is off the charts. Gunnar has become so protective of Selene. After a health scare, Gunnar is even more protective and a little over bearing. It makes Selene question their whole relationship. As they navigate through everything, will their relationship last? Wait til you find out.
Every couple has their ups and downs. Their trip to the alter is rocky at times, but they get there. Selene and Gunner have an amazing support group in their friends from the Playground Club. They both have people to talk to, cry with, and anything else they need.
This was an ok read but the fmc was hard to connect with and it wasnt my favourite book tbh but also saying that this was my first book by this author so I havent read any of the previous books to this series
I won’t lie, I am really loving The Playground Club series. This one is about Gunnar and Selene, a couple that are already together. Please read the triggers before reading this book.I was hooked from start to finish can’t wait to read more!!
I was better than I expected, love the story and characters too, some parts threw me off but that just my emotional crap not the book, can't wait to see what's coming next in this world
First, a big thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC of this book. I always appreciate the chance to discover new stories and voices. 💌 Unfortunately, this one just wasn’t for me. I struggled to connect with the FMC — her personality simply didn’t resonate with me, and because of that, I couldn’t fully immerse myself in the story. Personally, I also felt that the MMC deserved a better, that made it hard for me to root for their relationship. As much as I wanted to love this, I ended up DNF-ing. That said, I know every reader connects differently, so I’m sure this book will still find its audience.
