Moonlight
Nephrit – the half-blood – has made a career out of surviving impossible odds.
He plays by his own rules, takes jobs no one else would touch, and keeps both elves and humans at a safe distance. Usually.
But when a simple escort job heading south turns into a hunt by mages and meddling gods, Nephrit is forced into a game where the rules change at every step.

I had the pleasure of ARC reviewing E. Beckett's Moonlight.
This book is a treat for anyone who has a deep nostalgia for old-school fantasy. I'm talking earlier editions of D&D and the Forgotten Realms books, particularly the first books of the Drizzt Do'Urden series. You're introduced to a lush fantasy world where each character feels staggeringly real. Modern fantasy readers might be thrown off by the omniscient narrator, but as someone who almost exclusively reads third or first-person limited, it didn't take long to get used to Beckett's style.
And speaking of style, Beckett has a methodical way of easing you into the world, without overexplaining. This was particularly nice for a reader like me, who loves having mysteries and theories to chase as I keep diving into the book. It's even more interesting here, where the main character has so much mystique around him. There are times when you truly feel like you're in Nephrit's head, only to realize you might not understand him at all. That's what makes him feel so real and special among all the other characters.
I also have to give credit to how a large cast of characters was handled. It's not uncommon for fantasy authors to get bogged down with multiple POVs, but Beckett gave each voice a fair chance to be heard. Yes, even the "meanies," and I found myself hopelessly falling in love with characters I initially brushed off as simple antagonists.
If you're searching for that magically nostalgic fantasy experience with deep characters, lore that keeps on giving, and mysteries that leave you hungry for more, Moonlight is for you. It's a book that reignited my love for traditional fantasy and has inspired me to write in that genre, too.
