Monster Garage: How to Customize Damn Near Anything

Rate this book
Monster Garage turns ordinary vehicles into mind-bending machines like the "Doom Buggy," a Mazda RX-7 converted into a sand dragster, the Ford Explorer converted into a garbage truck, and an ambulance converted into a wheelie machine. Jesse James and his crew will tap the experts used on the number one Discovery Channel show, Monster Garage, to create a comprehensive guide to customizing your car, motorcycle, mini-van, pick-up truck, toaster, . . . you get the idea. Each section will take you through the process of creating a Monster custom, from planning the project, through building custom bodywork, to adding bolt-on bits and custom paint. The techniques are explained through illustrated diagrams, formulas when necessary, and step-by-step original and Monster Garage archival photographs.

This was a hard book to rate and review.

Those interested in customizing their own hot rod can find the information they need right here. This is a large, colorful book with tons of pictures and illustrations. Instructions and language are direct and straightforward, (if you understand car lingo.) This reads almost more like a magazine than a book. Based on the television show.

Me, personally, I don’t know a crankshaft from a camshaft, and found the book puzzling. The audience for this book is one who has advanced beyond Cars and Car Parts for Dummies (I freely confess I have not). The pictures are detailed and clear, and the guidelines – what kind of metals are best, how to prepare for building a car, what to consider budget-wise – were easy enough even for me to understand. But this went over my head when they actually talked of the building process. That is not the fault of the book, but of this reader.
