Dilip Sarkar is an author who knows the Supermarine Spitfire. He's written about many of the best Spitfire Pilots, and covered the Battle of Britain in tonnes of detail. With this book he returns to the Iconic British WWII single seat fighter giving us a short version of the type's history and then a really nicely curated book full of black and white images of Spitfires all around the war. Aircraft and pilots, aircraft and ground crew, and aircraft in all stages of destruction and repair cover the pages of this book. It is a very attractive little book about perhaps the 1940s most visually appealing death machine.
The unique floatplane origins of the type are discussed and shown in some nice photos and then we are off into the development process race, each Nazi technological improvement being met by the "boffins" on the side of the Allies. The Mark 1 begats to Mark V which leads to the mark IX - Sarkar keeping us abreast of both the technology and what it meant the the lads at the controls. In the Western Desert, the Spits need better air filters for the ubiquitous dust, against the Japanese, it is overheating that needs to be managed. Each solution improved the fighter and its kill ratio. The RAF/RAAF/RNZAF/RCAF/RSAAF learns to use its tools more efficiently. It's a powerful story told well and with appropriate detail for a survey.
The adult themes are commercial and political, and there are no graphic passages, so this is a good read for the Junoior Reader over 9/10 years with an aviation interest. For the Gamer/Modeler/Military Enthusiast this is a good but not great package. The gamer will not get that much help with scenarios but might get some help with campaigns and a better understanding of the weapons system. The modeler gets some great build and diorama ideas in these pages- but will want some colour assistance as well. For the Military Enthusiast, getting to know the weapons better - learning what each technology breakthrough meant in real terms is always good. I think those general audience readers who want to understand the icon- and what made it so iconic will find this book illuminating also
