!!THREE STARS!!

Okay so in spanish class, we watched Pans Labyrinth. Now when i tell you guys that this film was sickengly beautiful and heartbreaking. the acting was wonderful, the cinematography was so unique, and the storytelling and writing just brought me to tears. and then after that i got home and watched that cringe disney movie, Upside down magic. It was cute, funny, an enjoyable film. but it had no depth, I didn't care about the characters, and lets just say the acting tipped a bit.

you compare that to Pans Labyrinth, and there is an obvious better choice. That was this book. it was as deep as a disney channel movie, but enjoyable and silly nonetheless.

the characters lacked depth. I didn't connect with Kaia at all, I liked Anders, and Vidar just got on my nerves. and for the *insert eye roll* evil-but-hot-oh-and-also-immoral-but-misunderstood villain, I liked him a little bit. i think his reason for becoming evil was fair enough, but he fell a bit one-dimensional. He was just there to play the 'hot obvious love interest' and he was so one dimensional.

oh, and speaking of love interests, there was like a love square, not even a love TRIANGLE. Honestly, I would've settled foor a love triangle at that point. Can I mention that kaia is SIXTEEN years old, one man is four years older than her and another is a century older. That is disgusting. You can at least make her 23 or something so I don't get grossed out every time Morlet obsesses over her. And the part where they said she was dIfFerEnT and sPeCiAl just made me cringe.

But the plot was okay, for a fantasy novel. it was cute and i did get invested at one point. I liked the little action bits and training, although there wasn't enough tension. The action scenes were low-risk, but still fun.

that's all bitches,
see ya

----------------------------------
Was it as thrilling and fun as I expected?
No
Did I still enjoy it?
Yes. It was as enjoyable as a nice rom-com, but didn't have enough depth.

***3.5/5 Stars***

The idea behind Rise was so much fun!  An evil ruler who tracked down and imprisoned warriors who were in the Order.  And only one remained, Kaia, a sixteen year old girl who took care of her ailing father.  Of course I was glued to the pages in the beginning!  But I started to struggle connecting to some of the characters as the book progressed.   Especially when I learned that there were three love interests.  So while I loved the idea behind Rise, I wasn't that huge of a fan of some of the characters and the love square (ohhh that word totally exists!).

Rise focuses so much attention on the characters, so here they are:
“Why are you running away?” He slid a knife from his boot and cut my bindings.
“Why?” I shrieked, shoving him away from me. “You’ve killed at least six men tonight. Six. You’re crazy.”
His eyes narrowed. “I saved you.”
“By killing people. You’re no better than the king.”
Anders growled and took a step toward me, making my back hit the wall.
Anders - There was only one clear winner, of the love square, in my eyes.  Even though Anders was a little dark and disturbing at times.  He was an assassin, who helped out Kaia, and he seemed to kill without a conscious.  Yet all of the times he killed people throughout the book, and there is a lot so be prepared, he was doing it to protect Kaia.  But that little thought would disappear out of my head from time to time because he was SO talented at being an asshole.  I adore those types of males in a book, because you hope that a nicer/softer side is going to sneak out from time to time.  And I loved seeing that other side of Anders when we got tiny peaks here and there.  He was definitely my favorite character in the whole book!
I had no idea what I’d gotten myself into. - Kaia
Kaia - I adored Kaia in the first part of the book, but I struggled with her in the latter part.  While she was always determined, I started to disagree with some of her thoughts as the story progressed.  You see, Kaia started to become friends with Anders and another guy you'll meet, Victor.  They saved her.  They protected her.  They warned her about the King Morlet, heck she had been warned by her local townspeople about him.  Yet that knowledge would fly out of the window and she would trust the King from time to time.  And those situations made me frustrated with her.
“Do I need to torture a child in front of you in order for you to cooperate?”
It sounded as if he was discussing what to have for dinner, not threatening me. - Kaia & Morlet
Morlet - Morlet was the evil King that ruled over their Kingdom and had been trying to hunt down all of the Krigers.  He screamed tortured bad boy, which I usually love, but he was just a true psychopath bent on power in my eyes. Although I'm sure that many will disagree with me for thinking this *hides face*.  His first strike against him was when he ripped a toddler away from his mother, with the vocal intention of torturing the poor child, just to obtain information from the town's people.  Even if he was bluffing, which we never learned, it still deeply bothered me.  His second and third strikes I can't talk about.  But know that he hurts others while he claimed that it pained him. Oh please.  Unfortunately, Morlet was a front runner, to be a possible love interest in book two, and it made me want to shudder and shake the ever living life out of Kaia.

Vidar - Vidar is Anders friend who also helped protect Kaia.  I had no qualms about him in the beginning, other then the fact that he was a tad creepy - you must sleep in my bed so I can protect you *rolls eyes while laughing*.  I just started to warm up to him, and get past his different ways, and then he spouted out a fact.  After that fact was out, he was soooo annoying and demanding.  He didn't seem to give much thought to Kaia's wants and needs, and he came off a little cold and yes still very creepy.  Vidar was the final love interest, and I can't imagine re-warming back up to him.
He shook his head. “I’ve been around for so long that I forget what it’s like to care for someone.” He turned to face me, a small smile spreading across his face, softening the lines around his eyes and forehead. “You remind me of that.” He reached out and squeezed my hand. - Anders
So I am conflicted. If I hear that she will eventually wind up with Anders, by the end of the series, then I will definitely continue. If she is going to end up with Morlet or Vidar, then I can't finish this series because I know that my heart will be broken.  But on a side note, I will say that I was happy to figure out one of the plot twists.  Hmm just know that it involved a prophecy we learn from Vidar, and I knew it!  But here's hoping you end up liking this series WAY more than I did, because the story itself was really fun!  Good luck!

FLYLēF Book Reviews

Original Post: Rise at FLYLēF (www.flylef.com)

Fast-paced adventure full of action and magic, Rise (Order of the Krigers 1), by Jennifer Anne Davis, is a pleasant coming of age story about 16-year old Kaia, a young female warrior. Her journey from innocence to understanding highlights qualities of courage and selflessness, likely finding favor with many young adult fans.

In the kingdom of Nelebek, an ancient curse has cause the people to live in fear of their evil ruler—Morlet. To lift the curse, Nelebek’s only hope lies with twelve warriors in the Order of the Krigers. When their powers are linked, only then can they defeat Morlet. Eleven Krigers have been hunted and imprison with one, last remaining hope—Kaia—a steadfast, heroine who wields (quite awesomely, I might add) a powerful magical bo staff. The action scenes where Kaia handles the bo was written with great attention to the fighting choreography.

Despite being hunt by Morlet, I never really feared for Kaia's safety. As a reader, I just couldn't emotional connect to the level were I felt what I read. It was really quite strange when the heart and mind are incongruent. I think this is because atmospherically the book was overall lighthearted, with a good integration of humor, positivity, and above all, hope. I didn’t feel despair where I thought I should.

I enjoy Kaia’s character, though at times I find her perspective a little too idealistic. She is very innocent, even gullible, and sees the good in everyone, even Morlet. “It’s your desire to see the good in people that makes you special.” I understand that she was written with this particular disposition perhaps as a way to steer a lot of her decisions; however, her choices were often not very cautious and thus seemed impractical and unrealistic. But at the same time, I like Kaia for her goodwill and kind heart.

The romance was a bit…crowded…with three different pursuers vying for Kaia’s heart. I’m particular fond of Anders—selfless, mysterious, wonderfully insufferable, and assassin extraordinaire. I enjoyed Kaia and Ander’s denied romance. Kaia’s heart is not free to love whomever. She will have to choose between following her desire or fulfilling her duty—choices that will lead to very different outcomes.

Overall, Rise is ideal for a light summer read full of action, with plenty of room to expand on the character and plot development—quite nicely setting up for a sequel.

Review courtesy of Dark Faerie Tales

Quick & Dirty: Fast paced, action-packed high fantasy that I devoured! With its magical setting, adorable romance and amazing characters this is sure to be a huge hit with all young adult fantasy fans!

Opening Sentence: In a hut on the outskirts of a small village, the old woman tied the girl’s wrists and ankles to the table.

The Review:

The kingdom of Nelebek is ruled but a tyrant of a King named Morley and the only hope the people have to overthrow him is the Order of the Krigers. There are twelve members of the order and each one wields a magical weapon. By combining their magic the Krigers may be strong enough to defeat the dark magic the king holds but currently the king has eleven of the Krigers locked in his prison! The hope of the whole kingdom lies on the shoulders of a sixteen-year-old girl named Kaia.

Kaia has lived a quiet life with her father. Together they barely scrap by, but they are happy. Kaia is good at being discreet and staying out of the spotlight. But one night she finds herself at the town square during an execution and when she pears into the eyes of the king a ancient magic awakens inside of her. To save her life she flees with a charming assassin who leads her to a place that has housed Krigers throughout the years. Will Kaia have the strength to fulfill her destiny and save her kingdom or will the king destroy them all?

Kaia is an awesome heroine that you really want to cheer for. She is witty, smart, kind and strong. In a lot of ways this was a coming of age story and I loved watching how much Kaia grows through out her journey! She can be very impulsive at times and she has a pretty terrible stubborn streak but her faults just added to her overall charm. I thought she was very easy to connect with and I am so intrigued to see where her story goes next!

Anders pretty much had me at hello. At first he comes across as a jerk but as you get to know him you learn that he is really an amazing man. I don’t want to give anything away, so I’m not going to talk a lot about him but trust me, you are going to fall hard for him. His relationship with Kaia is so much fun. They fight like crazy but are obviously perfect for each other. In many ways they are very similar but they also push each other to do better. I loved all their moments together and I’m really hoping to get a lot more in the next book!

Rise was a fantastic high fantasy filled with wonderful characters, cute romance and a captivating setting. When I first picked this up, I was thinking I would just read a few chapters to get a feel for it so I could put together some guest post ideas for the blog tour, I ended up not putting it down! I was instantly drawn into the story and found myself not wanting to stop. I did take breaks to do normal life stuff, but as soon as I had an extra minute I picked this back up. Suffice to say, I pretty much devoured this book and enjoyed every minute of it. There were a few times where I felt like certain moments felt a little too convenient and there were a couple of times the story felt slightly awkward. But honestly that’s only negative thing I can say about this. I can’t wait to read book two and if you are a fantasy fan you must pick this one up!

Notable Scene:

His hands slid on either side of my face. I tried pulling away, but he drew me closer. “Stop scrunching your nose as if you’re disgusted.” He moved his lips to my right ear. “And if you’re not going to play the part, then I will for the both of us. There’s no way I’m going to be taken before Morlet to be executed like a dog.” He kissed my neck.

I froze. I’d never been kissed by a man before. There wasn’t time for such trivial activities or things like courting. Work, training, and taking care of my father were all I did. Ander’s lips left a hot trail along my skin. “What are you doing?” I hissed. There was no need for him to go that far. He could pretend to woo me without actually pressing his soft, tender lips to my neck. My eyes fluttered closed as warmth spread through me.

Sad

So sad. really just upset. I don't want to do this!!!!!

I didn't love it *GASP*

I know. Crazy. I LOVE every single one of Jennifer Anne Davis' books but...I didn't feel this one. There were parts I liked but ultimately if I hadn't read the Key I probably wouldn't continue this series.

I just want to cry because I don't want to dislike one of my favorite Author's books. But I do.

Lets start with the things I liked:
1. The whole story line between Kaia and Morlet - LOVE. Once again jennifer has made her love stories stretch across the lines of feasible and reasonable. I loved every minute of their interactions.
2. The whole magical concept was interesting. A balance between good and evil - creatures created by witches to fight each other for balance.
3. The assassin was interesting and made Kaia's ignorance at the beginning tolerable.

Unfortunately - there were also things I did not like:
1. What I am expecting was supposed to be the "Big twist" of the book - I called the second we met Vidar. Not as good as the other twists in her other series.
2. The Romance between Kaia and Anders - I don't feel it. I get the Morlet line but Anders just seems like we are forcing a love triangle into a story that doesn't need one.
3. Vidar's forced marriage - stupid. Even I can see where the prophecy is headed and hes just making everything terrible.
4. Kaia, kaia, kaia - didn't your dad ever tell you not to go into the woods with strangers who refuse to answer your questions? WTH kind of person would willingly lock themselves up in the forest with compulsive liars? It's just stupid. In real life - she would have demanded answers or left. Felt...ridiculous a bit to me.

I think the concept is there, the foundation is there, this book alone though...lacked. So sad because I wanted to love it. I still have hope for the rest of the series but I have to give a not-so-good to this one.

Solid start to a new series! I'm a huge fan of Jennifer Anne Davis' books and this one didn't disappoint. I'm so curious to find out how this storyline is going to play out. I really enjoyed the twists and turns in Rise and I have a few theories about what might happen next!

I’m not quite sure how to review this book. It’s one of those reads with a list of a bunch of problems within the story, but you also found yourself liking it! I actually read Rise in one day, because it was a fast read but also because it kept me interested enough that the kindle stayed in my hands.

Let’s start with the things that I really liked. First, and most importantly, Morlet. What I feel for Morlet isn’t love, though if my hunch’s prove true I can see it easily becoming love. What I felt for Morlet was complicated. He was, I think, the only character in the entire story that felt multifaceted. Yes, he was definitely the bad guy. It’s pretty obvious from the first chapter that he isn’t ‘good’. Yet, reading through Kaia’s eyes shows something that makes you want to fix him. There’s so much going on under the surface, so much pain, that you find yourself wanting to know more and more about him. I think that’s exactly what prevented me from putting the book down, the author forces her readers to look into Morlet’s eyes too. It makes you curious. You want him to heal.

Second, I liked Anders a lot. I liked him nearly as much as I liked Morlet, even if he wasn’t an onion that needs it’s layers peeled away. I had Anders number right away, but that wasn’t necessarily bad. I’m not sure the author did it on purpose, but he was perfectly balanced between Morlet and Vidar (Anders best friend). Morlet and Vidar are both full of secrets, one supposedly good and one supposedly evil. Anders was in the very center, not a lot of well kept secrets, and not quite good or evil. He was witty, and with Kaia he was endearing. He was also deadly and could be cold. He holds my romantic hopes for Kaia’s future. For now.

I also liked the history of the Krigers. The idea that they’re magic surges when they find their weapon.

As far as what I think didn’t work in the story, well I didn’t like Vidar much. I’m not sure that counts since my spidey senses are telling me there’s something off about him so my dislike could be warranted. IF he’s supposed to be a good guy, he totally fails. He was a jerk. I also wasn’t a huge fan of Kaia’s. I think she was on the TSTL side of the line. Mostly though, I thought that the story could have used a LOT of editing. The pacing was way off. The story moved too fast. Too much happened in too short a time. My head was practically spinning as one short scene bled into another. If Davis had just slowed everything down a bit we would have gotten a really wonderful story, and we would have been able to enjoy our time with each of the characters.

While immediately upon finishing I was interested in where the story will go next, my guess is that as more distance is put between myself and Rise the less I’ll start to think about it or care.

This had a generally cool concept, but something about the writing didn't work for me and neither did the pseudo love triangle.

Look at that cover. Commence drooling. Wipe mouth. Continue reading.

Summary:

When the balance of the world shifts, something must always occur to restore it.

In the case of the nation of Nelebek, things took a turn for the worse when Morlet, a man with dark magic coursing through his veins, takes the throne. His power is menacing and his reign is full of desperation. Yet, out of the dark, there must be light. This comes in the form of the Order of the Krigers; twelve warriors who come into their own powers at the age of eighteen and whose shared destiny is to combine with each other and their weapons to kill the king.

For over a century, the Krigers have been hunted by two sides. A mysterious assassin and his friend are alone in their knowledge of what must be done to aid the Krigers, and so they search for any they can get to before Morlet's guards. After so long, the King has become aware that the powers of the Krigers will endure, no matter how many he kills. So he has begun to imprison them, in order to kill all twelve as they are linked, destroying the Order of the Krigers forever.

Morlet has eleven. There is only one left.

Kaia didn't mean to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Yet, it was during a public execution that she comes face to face with the dark and powerful ruler of Nelebek. And when she meets his eyes, an ancient power rises in order to combat his own destructive magic.

Now, she must decide whether or not she will accept her destiny, while learning what all that entails.

Initial Thoughts:

I'm not going to lie here, Kaia and I did not get along. I yelled at her throughout the entire book. Despite her, however, it was not a trying read for me. Mostly because the secondary characters were this book's saving grace.

Characters:

Kaia and I are not compatible creatures. When it comes to a moral compass, you'd never be able to find someone so pure and naive as Kaia. Despite her father's wise teachings and relentless training, Kaia still doesn't have what it takes in her to be a warrior. Not at heart. She also lacks the inherent suspicion of other people that keeps most of us alive on a daily basis. Common sense is also something she is sorely lacking. And as the assassin, Anders, would happily point out: she can't keep her mouth shut. Even/especially when it matters most. Out of the 19 pages of notes I took while reading this book, yelling at Kaia comprises of 95% of them. I wanted to kill her myself, she was so TSTL (too stupid to live). I'm not sugar-coating it; there were several times that she should have died, and didn't only by the grace of amazing secondary characters. Her innocence is the kind reserved for a child growing up in a loving home, and has no business being in a sixteen-year-old who was trained to fight since she could walk. There is no excuse for that level of naiveté.

Anders was a badass. He was funny and boyish at times, while being stubborn and fierce when needed. There were a few mood swings of his that seemed odd, but were pleasurable to experience. What I truly enjoyed about Anders, however, was that he was a contradiction of emotions and actions, but he allowed nothing to stand in the way of his objective. Even Kaia's whiny savior-complex. Though he feels guilty about the lives he takes, Anders knows that there is no choice but to take them, and he doesn't hesitate. He pays the price for what he does, but he doesn't display it for everyone to pity. For that, I adored him. I dubbed him my favorite from page 35, and I don't see that changing throughout this series.

Vidar was also fucking amazing. Sorry, there's just no other way to put it. He's charismatic, noble, caring, and has a strong sense of purpose. It is his drive that has kept the Krigers going for so long, and what keeps Anders in check. There's also a few flirty moments with Kaia that you can't help but adore him for, since it is all done for the sake of humor. Vidar is adorable. I can add nothing to that, and you'll have to read to find out exactly what I mean. Between him and Anders, though, it was an entertaining read.

Morlet is also one of the most interesting characters in the book. Now, I can't say too much on him without revealing some of the book's most intriguing moments, but he is a character you want to keep your eye on. Before, I said that Anders was made of contradictions. Morlet suffers with a few more of those than you would think. And not even a king is master of everything. Much less himself.

Plot & Setting:

As far as setting goes, this one is a bit lacking. Through the narrative, we learn some basic layout, but not enough to immerse us. Yet, since this is First Person Perspective, I usually let setting slide for realism's sake. I mean, how many of us go around describing everything we see every day in our heads? For a character to do it instead of focusing on the action, that's unforgivable to me. So no harm, no foul on setting.

Plot though… I'm back and forth on this one. As I said, I need my characters focused on the action, and Kaia does nothing but this. Yet, she's also used to create unnecessary series of events because she's just that plain stupid. There were several instances in this book where she honestly should have died. There were instances that could have been avoided entirely if she had just been a little more suspicious. And if she had trusted her allies more and her enemies less, half of the book would never have happened.

In general, the plot arc that this book was going for was achieved. I loved the revelations and many of the character progressions that I witnessed. Yet, much of it felt contrived through Kaia's ignorance, and I was not okay with that.

Writing Style:

I've read plenty of books by Jennifer Anne Davis and there is at least one quality to them that remains consistent: once I reach a certain point, it is in everyone's best interest not to fucking interrupt me. For several of her books, this has come way sooner, and for others I pass that point much later. This was one of the latter category. My disconnect with Kaia made it hard to deal with her, but there was always a driving need to know what happens next. To find out if my theories are sound. (They were, btw.) To see how everything would unfold. That is the power of Ms. Davis's writing. It pulls you in and keeps you questioning. Even if you abhor the MC, you still have to stick with it to find out if everything is as you thought it would be. Which is why I will undoubtedly be reading the next book.

Overall Opinion:

This is going to be a hit or miss with people, and there will be very little in-between. (Waves hand at all the few other people to join me in the middle.) There were parts I loved about this book, and there were parts I despised. Since this is a FPP, however, I think most opinions will be directly related to how well you can connect with Kaia. For younger teens, this will probably be a phenomenal hit. For older teens, probably less so. And amongst the adult portion of readers, I have to think it'll be a 50/50 shot, because so many want to experience the kind of innocence, naivety, and self-righteousness that Kaia provides; while others who don't mind the darker parts of the human experience will find her lacking in every instinctual, defensive necessity that our existence depends upon.

Oh Jennifer you brilliant writer, you! There hasn't been a book that you've written that I haven't loved and this one is defiantly no exception.

Kaia is a 16 year old who lives in poverty and filth but she has a loving father, so in her eyes it isn't all bad. Her father has raised her to fight and be strong and it's a good thing because she soon finds out why. She is the 12th Kriger.

She meets Anders and he saves her and helps her escape the capital. Anders is an assassin and he is quiet and at first he was a little mean. Kaia has a way about her though, Honestly she just never shuts up and eventually Anders thaws toward her and they start to become friends. He takes her to meet Vidar. Who is the head of the Order of the Krigers. Vidar was a little creepy at first. He was blunt and flirty but he grew on me. He was funny. Although I did not like how his and Kaia "relationship" played out. I absolutely hated the way he went about it. I don't think I'll ever get passed that.

Okay so the whole point of the 12 Krigers is to kill Morlet, the evil king. He has tortured and killed many in his quest to find freedom. This is where most will probably disagree with me. But I am totally on his side. He is an asshat but the Heks had complete control over him.... Although at the end she didn't.. so maybe he is just an asshat.. Dang it. Okay so maybe I like him a little less.

I still think I am team Morlet. I have read a few reviews saying that there's a love square. No there isn't. Vidar is clearly not in the running. They have zero romantic feelings for each other. She won't end up with him. I know that things with them are complicated right now but no. It won't happen. So there is just Anders and Morlet. Anders is the clear choice at the moment. He seems to have legitimate feelings for her and vise versa. I guess only time will tell with that.

I can't wait for the next book!! Now that all the Krigers are free, I need to know what happens!! It's going to be killer to wait. This book was a totally new adventure and I loved every second of it!

OH MY GOSH!!! I can't even begin to explain how much I love this book! This is the first book I have ever read by Jennifer Anne Davis and it will surely not be my last!

Rise grabbed me from the very beginning and held on tightly. The first night I started reading this book I could not put it down. I wound up staying up and reading this until the wee hours of the morning. The sun came up and it took everything in me to put this book down so I could get some sleep. When I woke up all I wanted to do was pick this book back up and keep reading, but alas, Adulting called and I had to get things done first. If I would have been able to I would have devoured this book in one sitting. You have been forewarned.

This story had it all! It is one of those books that will give you all the feels! It has all the elements that make a book enjoyable. Action, and romance in abundance!

Loved the original names for all these characters in the book! I also feel deeply in love with these characters. Kaia is a girl who comes from a humble background. She has always had to work for the little that she has. she lives with her sick father and takes care of hin. She is a littlle bit innocent and a bit awkward and has never been in love. Now she pretty much has three guys vying for her attention. I think it's pretty safe to say that she has feelings for two of them. I think I might have feelings for all three of them. *Wink, wink. Anders is a take control kind of guy. He is a bit mysterious and at times a little bit bossy. Vidar is not afraid to say what he is thinking and does what has to be done. Morlet is a dark, lost soul who is struggling to be kind. Kaia is a femaile surrounded by to much testosterone. Lol. She has a lot resting on her shoulders. She has to deal with all of these guys while learning to wiled her powers and wondering if she can save the world.

Little did Kaia know that one trip to get her Father some medicine would completely change her life. This is where the book really picks up and got very impossible to put down. This story just got better and better the further into it I got. There was never a dull moment. I was completely enveloped in this world. The world building was on point. It was so easy to escape into the pages of this book. The writing was spectacular! It was so easy to follow and I never for a second felt lost or didn't understand what was going on.

There were twists and turns throughout the whole story keeping it gripping and exciting. Every time I thought it couldn't get any better it did. This is for sure going to be one of those series that I am going to want for my bookshelves so I can re-read them later. I am so excited for the next book and CAN'T wait until it comes out. I did not want this book to end. Every second of it was enjoyable.

*I received an ARC of this book in return for an honest review.

I always start trying to write a review and I think, "What can I really say that's different from the last review I posted, and the review before that. It's just another book. Sure, a great book, but still just a book." But this time, it's different. What do you say about a book as good as this? That it's thrilling? That you never want to stop reading it? That the author really made you feel the emotions? Yeah, sure. Let's say all of those. They're definitely all true. But it's more than that too.

It's the beginning to a series unlike anything else I have read before. Yeah, there are some similarities, but I've never read anything quite like it. It's the way you're almost afraid to turn the page, because you like what just happened and you don't want it be shattered. It's the way hours pass without your knowledge because you're so engrossed in the book before you. It's the way you clutch your chest in pain from a character's actions or gasp out loud in shock. It's the way you smile without meaning to at a sweet part, or laugh out loud in public at a funny part (mostly from Vidar). It's the way you hold your breath with Kaia as you hide in the tunnel, or how you wipe away tears from her loss.

Because then, my friends, it's no longer just a book in your hands. It's a portal. It's a world. It's a life. And you're living it. This is not an easy thing to create, but Jennifer Anne Davis has done it masterfully. If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would. Getting ready for the ride of your life... Or someone else's.

Review:

Protagonist: Kaia has always known to keep her head down and out of trouble. However when she finds herself in running an errand to save her sick father she comes face to face with the evil tyrant who runs the kingdom she lives in she can no longer fade into obscurity. Now she's on the run from a terrifying enemy and learns of her destiny to help eleven others band together to fight and ultimately bring down the fearsome Mortlet. I really like Kaia, she's stubborn and fierce with a caring side to her. It's really hard to describe because she's more than just those things, she's a very well written and developed character.

Romance: So the romance in this book isn't a large plot point, and I was completely okay with that as it let this incredible plot shine all the more. So, I'm trying to figure out how to describe the romance without giving some rather large spoilers away, so I'll say this, while there isn't really a love triangle in this book, at least not one that I can take seriously, there is more than one person that comes into Kaia's life that will contribute in one way or another to the romance. The romance between Kaia and her main love interest is great though, it's slow moving, and has a lot of great tension in it. It didn't take too long for me to really start to root for them.

World-Building: Wow, this world is incredible. I said on twitter, not too long after starting this book, that the prologue to this story is incredible, it hooked me so easily and never let go. In this world there is magic, though humans don't have it unless it's given to them. Which is how the Krigers were born. They each have a weapon that links them to their magic which I found to be an incredible idea. I was eager to see how Davis would handle a magic system, since her True Reign and Reign of Secrets series don't have a magic aspect, and I have to say she did a phenomenal job. Then there's the world itself and while we don't learn too much about it, what we do learn is very well presented and there's some hints at things that I think we'll discover more in the future.

Predictability: So I'm going over in my head all of the twists in this book and there aren't all that many. There are some sudden turns in the story that I didn't quite see coming that were incredible, and even the twists that I did see coming I still really enjoyed. The sort of big twist to this story was actually pretty easy to guess, though not until after learning a key piece of information, but even then with the twist so obvious, the author didn't really try to continue to hint at it beating it over our heads, in fact even the main character starts to catch on to a few things. In the end I was probably more excited with how things fit together than whether or not I was surprised when they were finally revealed.

Ending: This ending did not take the turn I thought it would have. While I knew in my mind where the logical end point for this installment was, there were things in it that just seem to happen almost too soon. There are two more installments in this series and now I'm extremely curious as to what the next installment is going to bring. The final climax of this book had quite a few twists and turns in it, some I saw coming and a few I never quite expected. This all leads up to a rather killer cliffhanger.

Rating:

Wow, going in to this book I expected to like it, but I seriously can't wait to see what's going to happen next. The world is so richly developed and I feel such a connection to so many of the characters. If you're a fan of fantasy, this book is a must read!

1.5 stars
This was all over the place.
So, we have Kaia. Your 16-year-old girl living with her sick father. One day she discovers she's the last Kriger. A magician meant to defeat the evil king Morlet with the help of the other 11 Krigers (who are all sadly held by said king in a dungeon). While discovering this, she meets Anders, an assassin helping the Krigers. Sounds fun, right? Well, a bit tropey, but still fun. Let me tell you, it was not.
I've read several other books by Jennifer Anne Davis. Her style is a bit on the simple side, with tropes, and her books are full of plot holes, but I never cared much, because they are quite readable (even though I always complained in the reviews). This was just one huge eyeroll, though. But I must admit, I finished and it was readable from times, therefore the 1,5-star rating.
What issues I had? Well, many. Let's start with the pacing. The whole book takes place in a matter of probably a couple weeks, when it would've been more beleivable if it took months instead. There are too many plot lines stuffed into the book - Kaia shares dreams with Morlet, Kaia needs to train her combat skills, Kaia has to get to her magical Kriger weapon and retrieve it, Kaia has to free the other Krigers, Kaia absolutely must develop a relationship with Anders, Kaia absolutely must develop a relationship with Morlet (who is a hurt guy consumed by the dark magic on the inside), and let's not forget, Kaia must develop relationship with Vidar, the creep. Yeah, there is another guy (and yes, he's a creep; at least in the beginning)! And there is also a prophecy, apparently.
Overall, the book was quite predictable as well... I'm really not sure I'm going to finish the series...

3.5/5.0

This book has lots of promise and, hopefully, the little glitches that exist will be ironed out as time goes on. The story is engaging and keeps one turning the pages and the twists and turns are interesting. I also really liked the characters… well most of them. Weirdly, it was Vander that I disliked most, and he isn’t even the villain!

There are just a combination of small things that keep it from rating higher in my view. Kaia’s actions, for one, are at times beyond her 16 years and at others seem more like a child with no sense. Also, so many small, unanswered questions that hang in the back of one’s head and annoy. For instance, why did her dad never enlighten Kaia about ANYTHING concerning her past, her mother, etc, even when it was vital to understand? Why does NO ONE just explain things to Kaia - EVER? Knowledge is power, so to speak, and without it she ends up making all the mistakes she shouldn’t have to (and the reader just pulls their hair out because of it). See? Small things but still irritations that keep the story from deepening and stop the reader from understanding enough to really exist within the story… and give the overall the 5 stars it could have had.

Good read. I didn't like it as much as her other novels but it has potential for the series.

Rise was a fantastic book. Early on Kaia learns that the training her father put her through all her life was not just to keep her safe but because she was the twelfth Kriger being sought after by the evil king, Morlet. Should he find her, he would have all twelve of the Krigers and could execute them all, ensuring no one could stop him. When Kaia runs into an assassin while on a mission to get the medicine her father so badly needs, she finds herself being propelled into the world of the Krigers and Morlet’s vengeance. Kaia learns that there is more to Anders, the assassin, than meets the eye as he introduces her to Vidar and the others who have devoted their lives to helping the Krigers defeat Morlet and restore the balance of power. When Kaia finds herself learning more about how Morlet came to be so evil and deadly, she has to make decisions that will effect all of Nelebek, her friends, and her father.

I love that Kaia doesn’t take any nonsense from the men in her life. She is not a damsel in distress and she fights to protect the people she cares about. Anders and Vidar are incredible interesting and complex characters that make you want to learn more about their connection to…well, everything. Morlet, though, is perhaps the most complex of all because there are so many different things going on in his storyline. I admit, I may have looked into his eyes…

I think the entire story was completely fascinating and I highly recommend. I’m dying for the next book in the series. I wonder if I could get Anders to use his sleeping darts to sneak in and grab the next manuscript for me…*evil grin* Definitely read Rise. You will be addicted. Trust me.

I'm going to go all fangirl for a moment... Jennifer Anne Davis has managed to do it again. Her ability to tell a story and get me lost in a fictional world is unreal. I am not typically one for magic and powers and made up creatures, but my one exception is always Jennifer Anne Davis. I get lost in a world that transcends all expectations and incites emotion. I become invested in the characters, the story, the resolution. Not all books bring this out of me, but without fail, JAD has done it again.

My favorite part of this book was the interaction between Kaia and Espen. That is when I found myself connecting the most. It was this moral struggle of good or bad, evil villain or damaged soul aching to be good again. In life, I want to believe that people are generally good and choices can lead a person astray. But, a person can always make the choice to make a change. That is what my heart hopes for Espen. Kaia is threatened by choice as well, but it is Espen's future choices that has me on the edge of my seat.

Now, I can't properly review this without mentioning Anders. Oh. Em. Gee. Anders. So mysterious. So brooding. So intriguing. I am dying to get to know him better.

Needless to say, I need book 2 now!! Like, yesterday. Don't make us wait too long!! :)

Rise "Order of the Krigers" by Jennifer Anne Davis Let me say it right now before I get started I strongly dislike Vidar, through the whole book I've been secretly hoping he gets killed off! I have loved everything I have read by Jennifer! I've never been disappointed. I have fell in love with Anders, Kaia, and Morlet! Yes I'm rooting for the bad guy but to me he isn't as bad as Vidar. Vidar just rubs me the wrong way! I have been screaming in my head Kiss her already Anders! Don't wait to long!!! The way this booked made me so mad I want more right now I can't wait!!!!! I have to know what is going on!!!! I love this books! It broke my heart when Kaia's dad died!!!! Vidar is evil!!! To go around her back and ask her dad for his blessing that is a bunch of crap!!! I hope he gets what is coming to him. As for Anders I immediately liked him and was sucked in to his story there is so much about him that I'm dying to know!!! Jennifer has given us another powerful female hero to look forward to! I can't wait for more from these characters!!! Book two hurry up I can't wait!!!

I have loved every book I have read by Jennifer Anne Davis. This is probably one of my new favorite series. I was immediately sucked in to the story and fell in love with all of the characters (even the villain)! The love triangle is amazing and I could not decide who to root for as I saw their story from all sides. Amazing!! I can NOT wait for the next one. Give me more please. I see myself re-reading this series every time a new volume is released. Thanks so much for all you do Jennifer Anne Davis!! We could not escape into these wonderful tales without your imagination and creativity.

Love it when a book starts off running! Plenty of magic, love, betrayal and friendship all packed into this fast action book. A teenager discovers her true past while on the run from evil magic. She discovers that her previous boring, dreary life was a cover to protect her until she became of age. Now, she is thrust into a life of saving others who must work with her to save her people -- all while trying to avoid being drawn into evil. A must read for all of Ms. Davis' fans. I cannot wait until the next book in this series is out!

Once again, Jennifer Anne Davis has given us an amazing book. This is a wonderful start to a new series. The book follows the story of Kaia, a 16 year old girl who discovers she's a Kriger--a warrior with magical powers--and the fate of the kingdom rests on her shoulders. Filled with wild creatures, an assassin, romance, and tons of adventure, this story is fantastic. I can't wait to read the next book!

The evil Morlet keeps the people of Nelebek in fear. In order to gain total control he must kill the Krigers, all twelve of them, together. But, when number twelve is found it's identity is a huge surprise to everyone and leaves Morlet scratching his head. Will the Krigers rise again with the help of the twelfth or will Morlet use his evil, cunning ways to gain total control?
This book answers a few questions but leaves you hanging on others..
I'm looking forward to the second installment!

Kaia is what I call the definition of a badass-- a genuine role model for girl power.
I really enjoyed this book and the whole plot!
Kaia is the twelfth Kriger who is being hunted down by the evil king called Morlet.

As the story progresses as Kaia meets an assassin along the way and learns much more about Kriger and Morlets quarrel that's taking place around her.

In overall, this story was amazing, thrilling, and bad ass!
I am eager for next book ~:)

I’m sorry but making your protagonist a 16 year old girl and having three men in their HUNDREDS wanting to bang her is just gross.
