This attractive volume celebrates 1500 years' of the Celts through colour photographs of artefacts, artworks, jewellery, everyday items and manuscripts, accompanied by an informative discussion of almost every aspect of Celtic culture in Europe.
Terrific introduction to the subject. This is the basic Celts 101 done well, accessibly written with a wealth of vivid color art and photos. Covers a wide variety of topics with brief educational chapters. History made exciting as it should be. Recommended.
1st time reading about The Celts (thanks to my fiancé who has Celtic blood in him) and I enjoyed it! The bravery that the men and women had/have tremendously great! My fiancé was right about how terrifying the Celts were in battle. The jewellery, clothing, poetry, love/romance, burials, etc. are divinely nostalgic and different. Completely different from what I'd read and about to check out more books on these lovely people, culture, & history!
author's comments and opinions seem more speculation than even handed analysis, and intent on criticizing peers than advancing knowledge. not sure why there'sthe academic grievance tone.
It is possible to cram the entire history of one group of people into a short book with illustrations, it can't be easy, but this book proves that it can be done. I found this to be a great starting reference for learning about the Celts. It introduced me to points of history unknown to me, which I can further investigate in greater detail elsewhere. The illustrations were beautiful and well chosen. I think it would make a great starting reference for anyone interested in the history and culture of the Celts.
It is a cute book with lovely pictures. It has flowery chapter titles, but it does deliver a good introduction to people who want to read about the Celts but don't really want to go too in depth on the subject.
