5⭐️, no notes. I went into this book a little nervous about how a couple of the story elements would play out (just because of my own personal preference), but those nerves weren’t necessary at all. The amount of respect that the MCs have for each other, and how they know what each person in the pack needs to feel safe and secure is absolutely perfect. There is some tension between the two alphas, but they figure it out and their “fuck it” scene is everything I hoped it would be. I have never read a book quite like this one, and though it has all of the “sweet omegaverse” elements that you expect (designations, knots, heat, bonding, scent matching) it feels like a fresh take. While you can 100% read this as a stand alone and don’t have to read the Knot Giving Up duet first (this is a different pack) I highly recommend it for additional context.
In this book we find our main characters all at a crossroads in life. Declan (MMC, alpha) is a DEA agent, and he arrested Knox (MMC, alpha) because he is a dealer for illegal suppressants and can help Declan take down the drug ring. Declan and Emily (FMC, beta) are together and he is already sure she is his future, though she is terrified to let him get too close because she “knows” that, as an unbonded alpha, he will abandon her the moment he meets his scent matched omega. Ava (FMC, omega) was the antagonist/OW drama in the Knot Giving Up duet, and though she knows it will probably never happen because of her past actions, she has feelings for Emily. Lucas (MMC, beta) was just kicked out of his pack post-olympics, and he has a way to get them all home when flights are grounded. While all of these characters are so different, they fit together so well. They all *know* that this arrangement is most likely temporary, but when Ava perfumes in front of the alphas for the first time everything changes.
I love how much love and respect the other MCs have for Emily throughout the book. Usually, when an omega is involved, late presenting or not, the beta(s) are sort of cast to the side but that is absolutely not the case here. Whereas other books revolve around the omega, this really feels like Emily’s story as much if not more than Ava’s. Ava absolutely gets what she needs and wants, but not to the detriment of Emily and I love that because Ava gets her redemption and we see who she really is. The pack family is built (the bonding is *chef’s kiss* perfect) and is just as important as the individual relationships. I just want to add, seeing a beta being taken care of (emotionally and physically) during their omega’s heat by her alphas was special and something I don’t think I’ve ever read before. I can’t stop thinking about this book and know this will be one I pick up as a comfort reread in the future.
*Thank you so much to the authors (Thea Masen & Jenni Peck) for the opportunity to ARC read this book! All opinions are my own*
