Angry Jogger

Rate this book
Angry Jogger is the coming-of-age story of Matt Waterworth a 30-year-old Northern Irish man who lost himself to the modern trappings of the bar, the TV and the pizza. Heavily overweight and depressed for most of his adult life, in 2010 he set out on a voyage of self discovery and ended up running 9 marathons, 16 half marathons and a 100k in the process. Angry Jogger charts his progress from a fat recluse to an ultra marathon runner taking him across Europe and to Las Vegas in search of fun, medals and thrills. Angry Jogger is a left field two fingered salute to the profiteering dieting and self help industry.

This book was quite good. It shows author's path from couch to jogger and describes it in a "every-day-person" kind of way, with plenty of funny bits to make this a nice, light and easy read. It is obvious that this is his first book, so the writing style can be a bit funky at times, but that is just another thing that makes this book very approachable.

If you're thinking of picking up running and would like to see how a non-professional does it, while laughing your behind off, this is a book for you.

Honestly, I laughed my ass off at this and it was a real tonic for my pathetic running career. I'm a mediocre runner at best, preferring the open water, and when I wasn't exploding with rage ("HOW can he set times like that whilst being bombed out of his gourd when I can barely drag myself along even though I behave myself?!"); I was nodding and laughing at Angry Jogger's love-hate relationship with running. It'd be very familiar to anyone pushing past 5k, I think. He is absolutely brutal and pitiless about his own character and his past actions, with a great deal of swearing. Normally I would have little patience with someone who never seems to learn, but that honesty is pretty refreshing and frames his running journey in a far more interesting way. He's obviously put the work in despite the mishaps, and I can only respect him for that (since consistency is something I rather fail at).

I would totally buy him a beer. Well, maybe not on race day. More power to your legs, Mr Angry. #sufferbutneversurrender, as my tri team says.

An honest and blunt book about a guy struggling through life who found a way to get on in life with the help of running. i'd recommend it to anyone running/ plodding/ jogging who needs a bit of encouragement to get out of a rut. It's well written if a bit repetitive in places but worth a read in my opinion.

Inspiring & painful

It's a quick read and inspiring what this young man accomplishes. Be ready for brutal and painful truths that happens to him over a period of a decade. He is quite brave to be so honest to share these stories as I was cringing page after page. But eventually he rallies. Eventually.

I think this is one of those books that was cathartic for the author. Seems like he needed to out the pain.

Fun and laugh out loud at times... but sometimes too repetitive.
